Frank Seravalli on Martin Necas in Vancouver, Canes’ D, Canucks keeping Hronek, replacing Joshua,
joined Now by NHL Insider Frank Celli of the daily Faceoff and the Frankly Speaking podcast and Frank uh heard you on Martin Ness earlier in the week that things are heating up there that there’s a lot of interest in the Carolina Hurricanes Winger we heard you uh name check the Canucks as one of the interested parties do you still feel like there’s a chance something gets done with NES here in advance of the Stanley Cup Final well for the Carolina Hurricanes perspective yes but I think it’s a real outside shot that the team that’s going to be left standing with Marty NES at the end of it is going to be the Vancouver Canucks um part of what the hurricanes are looking for I’m told is picks and they want good picks at that and so the Canucks not having their first rounder this year um that’s probably really damaging to their case to say nothing of what happens on the back end you may want to get Martin NES but how do you then sign him to the contract that he’s probably looking for which is somewhere in the neighborhood of seven time seven and a half I mean the Canucks are already trying to fit 10 pounds of in a five pound bag how do you then you know make all of this work it’s it’s going to be really hard to do they’ve got their work cut out for them already I think just trying to keep or hang on to a lot of what they have that’s almost all the five pounds right there yeah I hate those small yeah pix is interesting Frank what does that that signal or say about Carolina after a second round exit um I don’t know that it says anything um they have a bunch of free agents that they’re also trying to sign um this is viewed as a draft where beaut is in the eye of the beholder once you get past number three anywhere from three or four I should say to at least the people I talk to 15 16 17 you could mostly get the same player um and that makes it an intriguing draft from that perspective that there’s lots of teams that are going hey I’m at uh I’m at 20 I’m at 18 I’m at whatever how can I find a way to get to 12 how can I find a way to get to 10 and no team has done better I think finding a quantity of picks than the Carolina Hurricanes at some point uh they’re not going to have room to sign all these guys that’s why it was okay for them to trade in volume for the Jake gensel deal which by the way dropped the pick back to a second instead of a first um for gensel that’s the opportunity that they had now you could also leverage those picks in another significant transaction if you want to if that team doesn’t have the right roster player for you and I mentioned some of the players that they’re also trying to keep they’ve they’ve got a lot of work to do a lot of people have put ronic in a deal for for NHS but that doesn’t make a ton of sense for the it only puts them further in a hole on the blue line unless they had a real Ace up their sleeves come free agency but that’s still weeks away um any Vibes on on ronic and the Canucks no I I think the vibe is exactly how I left it with you guys last week which is the market seems to be down on him based on what they perceive as the ask um the the Canucks don’t seem nearly as I think in my understanding is um they they’re not nearly as down on the player as the market might be um they view the opportunity to either drive his own pair or to play with Quinn Hughes as a significant part of their success this year a big reason why he’s likely to win the Nars Trophy and now moving forward it’s easy to say hey that contract oh man it might not make us feel great in the here and now but how are we possibly going to find a replacement for this guy that does all of these things that we already know work so if the kcks have to overpay for a player um ronx the guy Frank in your eyes of these of their domestic free agents he would be for me I mean how did you get to how does Quinn Hughes win a Nars trophy it’s not that he wasn’t a good player before or that he didn’t have singular impressive moments this season solely on his own but that to me is the big difference maker it’s you know Rick toet and structure that’s great important but the real change from year to year is the addition of ronic into the equation that that’s how I view it the um other two the two Carolina right shot defenseman um Brett pesi and our old friend Jaylen Chatfield are they absolutely out the door is there any chance Carolina is resigning either of those guys uh peshi is absolutely out the door uh they have not made any offers to peshy at least any Bonafide ones to my understanding uh his dad took to Twitter right after the playoffs ended and said thank you Carolina it’s been you know it’s been great it’s been real uh anytime you see the the dad uh in the hours after a playoff loss you know that things are things are changing it’s kind of like Lind Holm and talking in past tense about his time in Vancouver um Chatfield though is a bit different they really like his foot speed um they like like what he brought to their lineup his size his ability to manage the four check they were really impressed with him uh I think they were talking a three-year deal I think it was somewhere in the range of 275 to three um but that was also going back like four months and I don’t know why it didn’t get done then but if I were to handicap it now I would say with Chatfield that they’re probably trying to get their other puzzle pieces together first before knowing exactly what they have left to spend Mr Ness and Mr uh pesy the Hurricane’s dad’s trip must have been fire some dads are really involved two of them got together and said I’ll tell you Don woodell did say say hi to to Mr Nas but he may be able to say hi personally if Jack Blue Jackets are the team that goes out to get him because that wouldn’t shock me at all what’s what’s the value of peshi because we know he’s fabulous at what he does but what he does is not Norris Trophy caliber what he does just is not going to lead the defenseman scoring race um what’s what’s the value of a peshi in this particular Market do you think Flawless skater um incredibly intelligent uh someone that makes the right read and right play 98% of the time is rarely ever in trouble um but I think they were looking much closer to five to six million bucks and I just don’t think with the limit offensive skill set that he’s going to be able to command that much on the market depending on how much term he’s looking for and someone will pay him it’s just not going to be Carolina and it’s not going to be after that’s you know another part of their business that I think they do so well they’ve paid for the best years of Brett peshy and now they’re like hey it was awesome but we’re moving on what’s the crazy number for peshy six million like that’s get it done I think that’s too much yeah yeah really H um how easy or difficult is it going to be for the kucks to replace Dakota Joshua that profile of player on the free agent Market it’s not easy but it’s doable I think it that’s going back to the you asked the question is that the one guy the Canuck should overpay for eronic it is to me because I think that’s the hardest position to replace right shot defenseman that has guaranteed chemistry with your top Defender that’s important what Dakota Joshua does and the 18 goals that he chipped in that’s important and the different roles that he plays the size the physicality all those things that come with it it’s it’s nice to have but I think it’s you can mine that somewhere else you can find the next one and it it’s easier said than done of course but that player exists like think about his profile he was traded for nothing he was a late round pick he’s a guy that played college hockey there there’s not he’s a late bloomer so to speak in terms of making it to the NHL and being a full-time player there has to be another one of those out there somewhere there just does and assuming ronic is the Canucks priority and I think it’s fair to say he is um there’s a bit of a timeline matter there right yeah rfas and qualifying offers and arbitration that’s a process that takes you later and deeper into the summer so have you heard anything is is is it stand to reason Frank that the Canucks would try to get ronic done first and then sort of understand what kind of budget and cap space they’re working with on sedor off Joshua and the other free agents well I think that’s what makes most sense to me it started with Pon and they were able to push and squeeze and get that contract done at the time that they needed it to by EX leverage now the next one is is eronic and making that defense core at least stabilizing it in terms of a cap perspective and then to your point knowing what you have left to spend um I think you want to do everything you can to avoid getting to the draft and being in a position where you feel uneasy about it and they know I think what the number is to get it done um I’ve said it before I I think it starts with an eight I think it’s eight flat probably but whether or not they’re willing to pay it how close they’re willing to get to it um I that’s that’s what we’re all waiting to find out if you’re a Betty man it gets signed before the draft do you think or that’s just a want for that’s a want it I mean it’s probably in some ways also a need because it’s going to be the easiest time to trade him if you have to so my guess is between now and the next 20 days 21 days three weeks there’s the full CT press is on to get this done what would make them what what do you think would make them feel like they have to trade him like that that the number is non-negotiable it starts with an eight and only eight and the conle have just that’s where their line is do you think there’s some thought and we’ve talked about this before that oh hey he needs to be under the Quinn Hughes number yeah and I’ve never had anyone verbalize that to me it makes sense when you think about it that the Canucks wouldn’t want to go above that but I’ve also explained why that’s not realistic comparing an RFA deal to a UFA deal so it doesn’t really matter and then the next part is are you really are you drawing a hard Line in the Sand are you cutting off your nose to spite your face if it’s and who knows where the Canucks have been at in this process are they at seven are they at 75 are they at eight whatever the number is um do you like is that are you drawing hard lines based on principle and philosophy or are you just a dealmaker that’s that’s the question I would ask I I believe it was 6 and a half earlier this season which was sarily rejected you mentioned Patterson I don’t think that was accurate by the way but sure um you mentioned Pon does Carolina take another run at Pon this summer I mean who was driving that was that Dundon was that the since departed Don woodell is that tulsky and the other members of the front office who wouldn’t be dry I mean wouldn’t you want to get your hands on that player like if he had if you have any sniff that he’s available which by the way like I don’t how authentic was that and how much was that just a plant to get Pon to the table to to get a deal done yeah we could talk about and we’re not going to relitigate the tendonitis but to me that’s the biggest change in the season is they exerted some serious pressure on this kid to sign a contract that is that his undoing was that is undoing no we’ve talked about it here before too um you know he spent the whole year saying wait till after the season then somehow got to the bargaining table and it felt like the team his agents the fans you everybody sort of just bullied him when you when you’re told sign a contract in the next 5 days or we’re trading you somewhere like if that’s what he was told which that’s what the story and narrative has been then why wouldn’t that rattle you yeah let me ask you about two other Wingers that we haven’t discussed a ton with you yet this off season um Brock B’s got the one year left on his deal um coming off a career year if you were going to trade him this would be the time to do it but they also love him and he was scoring clutch goals for them um what do you think their mindset is on Brock besser 27 years of age is he just are they going to try and sign him to the conect contract for life here or do they have to make harder decisions on that it’s amazing that he’s only 27 it feels like he’s been here forever y um I I don’t have line of sight on what the Canucks are thinking but what I would do is wait I’d want to see another season like the one that he just had and he was such a big part of the playoff run and it’s not a knock on him I just want to see more consistency I want to see he’s like you know you could make the argument he’s the NHL’s comeback Player of the Year and you’d have a great case um he’s a clearly talented kid that’s had a lot of different stuff to work through in his his life on the ice off the ice trying to put it all together and he did that but I’d want to see it again that’s just that’s just my start negotiations December 1st after a good start sort of thing yeah let him come out and and be comfortable because the last thing he there’s a whole bunch of misery that surrounded this team you guys know it for years he was part of that he was like right in the in the throws of all of it that’s why it was so surprising to get to breakup Day last year and hear him say yeah by the way I never wanted to go anywhere and this is the place I always wanted to be what about Conor Garland at five million a great season for him heart and soul kind of guy but 28 years of age he’s got term he’d be a pretty attractive trade uh asset and you free up five million in space and I know some fans are gonna be like are you freaking kidding me he this guy was heart and soul yeah but can you win without Connor Garland probably you can and he is inconsistent ultimately the bottom line is not that Gody a number in terms of actual points produced so um is Conor Garland a movable asset I mean they’re all movable I would just say let’s just roll with what we’ve got yeah’ got you under contract both of these guys they’re big parts of what we do and like I just don’t know trade value wise that you can ever really get back I know what the point production says I know what the contract says I don’t know that you can get truly commensurate value for Garland on the way back because hey we want to knock his his size we want to knock whatever part of his game that’s you know i’ I’d wait and see and and just you know use every drop of the contract possible hey um these questions about basser and Garland um are good ones with regards to the bigger picture here Frank like do do you believe kuu managements is of the mindset we did so well let’s run it back as best as we can with the players we have and Fiddle around the edges and see if that’s good enough next year or do you think they want to make deeper changes reworkings yes I would lean way more toward reworking and reshuffling and trying something new um not to say that it didn’t work but you also had a bunch of players that really were kind of playing all at the Peak at the same time right in terms of their ability and that adds up for a fun year but it may not necessarily add up to long-term success and I think even when you look at the playoffs this isn’t a knock on the Canucks at all but I think they outkicked their coverage in terms of what they actually are they had a better run they went deeper than really probably even their play game to game anticipated or expected that they should and I don’t think management is disillusioned by that I don’t think they’re sitting there going hey look we took the Oilers who they could end up winning the Stanley Cup here we took them to game seven and we were one shot away in the third period could have been us that’s a fallacy that I just I don’t think Patrick Alvine drinks that Kool-Aid but we’ll see yeah they got away with one but they’re probably not going to get away with one and the availability too Frank all season long like very few injuries to deal with of of deep consequence so they got away they also were aggressive getting to that point right like they made the moves they saw the window they took their shot and it didn’t work out they they still a fun nice important run for a lot of reasons but I I don’t think that they’re sitting here going hey our team starting on you know paper right now as a Stanley Cup Contender next season we’ve got work to do uh lastly speaking of Stanley Cup um how do you see the series man it’s I think it’s truly razor thin um I’ve waffled myself back and forth I think whatever case you want to make it’s 5248 and I could see either way um I think my my my head would tell me that the Panthers are the better team that they’re the deeper team that they certainly have the advantage in net but then I just watched steuart Skinner outd duel Jake ginger for a series and I saw this Oiler team display a character that I didn’t know that they had and oh by the way my heart says it’s really difficult to bet against 97 and 29 yeah because that’s just what happens in the NHL whether it’s cydney Crosby or Bobby or or Mario Lemieux or Wayne Gretzky or pick you know Alex oetkin whatever generational Talent you want to choose whether it happens in year three or it happens in year 13 at some point those guys get their fingerprints on the Stanley Cup and not saying that means the Oilers are going to win it’s just that I think if you were to say oh Florida’s just the better team let’s anoint them as the Cup winner I’d have a real hard time going along with that well uh enjoy the uh Cup Final the cities get to work on that Tan in Florida and um work on that tan I’m gonna have to burn my suits rip uh rip your travel between cities yeah rip my ass on these these airplane seats and the seat hey everybody if you’re enjoying what you’re seeing here then follow along with Saron price on YouTube I promise more content coming they call it the kids call it subscribe Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravallli stops by to reveal he doesn’t think the Canucks will likely win the Martin Necas sweepstakes (but adds that Brett Pesce will get to July 1), plus his latest temperature check on the Flip Hronek negotiations, and the future of Boeser and Garland on the Canucks’ wings.

Hockey has turned into pro wrestling in a lot of ways and Frank is a great heel. Highly entertaining. Doesn't tell you what you want to hear, but what he actually thinks. I appreciate that.
I'm picking up a certain douche factor in this interview.
This guy is a pigeon!
So much talking without really revealing any real information! What a guy! Thanks Frank! You greasy bastard!
Can you believe that Frank is 13 years younger than the other two guys?
Good interview, but when frank talked about Quinn hughes not getting the Norris without hronek, I personally don't think that's true, he was this good before hronek. Every player you put with hughes is instantly better, hronek had a good year because of hughes. I would love to keep him but wouldn't you trade him if you could get a top 6 winger, which we need more than any other position.
Hronek may have helped Quinn to receive a Norris but he never helped him get further in the playoffs.
Let Joshua walk. As the playoffs went on the worse he played.
We're going to need a bigger bag.
Have a question guys ,I was looking at cap friendly ad just had a thought, would the Canucks through about rfas next yr where j Hugh’s is a RFA.is there a chance they could go for it.
Insufferable
Frank is such a loser and Canucks hater, stop bringing him on
Has Frank ever got anything right? It's really obvious that someone pissed him off in Vancouver because you can feel the disdain whenever he talks about them.
He keeps saying how all these guys are gone because of the cap, yet after a Mikheyev buyout they have 28 million in cap. So the simple fact is they can't sign all 9 guys but they can absolutely re-sign any combo of them based on who they see ad a priority.
Lindholm 6.5-7
Hronek – 7-8
Myers. – 2
Still leaves them with 10-12 million to add a top six winger and a bottom pairing dman .
That's just one option, you can trade Hronek sign Tanev and save another 5 million for Zadorov which leaves 10-12 million to really add to the top six. You could then use Hronek assets for a Necas or Ehlers and sign Toffoli.
There's also Raty, Lekkerimakki, Podkolzin, that likely join the team and in Podz case an expanded role.
Necas 7 million
Lindholm 7 million
Zadorov 5 million
Toffoli 4 million
Tanev 3 million
Myers 2 million.
28 million total
Boeser – JT – Podz
Toffoli – EP – Necas
Hogz – Lindy – Garland
Raty – Suter Karlson
Hughes – Tanev
Soucy – Myers
Zadorov Juulson
Demko -Silovs.
Tanev, Myers and Zadorov would trade term for less AAV to keep cap hit down and would likely agree to it based on their known desire to stay or return in Tanevs case. Same with Toffoli.
Vancouver has always been a players preferred destination and the success of this season is huge for that.
Suter can also be moved and replaced internally Aman, Lekkerimakki, etc to save 1.5 million.
Bottom line this lineup while younger is far better on paper and took five minutes to create. The dollar amounts are all within what those guys likely get unless they choose short deals on shitty teams but since all those guys are older and all want to win, fit and term is likely more important. Tanev could get 4 somewhere else but hes a guy along with Myers who I think would take a bit of a discount especially if an extra year is added.
Toffoli loved it here so did his wife and was a great fit. He's also moved 5 times in 3 years, so again term and fit matters.
Lastly and this would be risky and not ideal but Garland could be traded to free up 5 million and you bank on Lekkerimakki having a smooth transition without going to Abby much like EP and others do all the time.
After last week I’m not sure if Franks a fan of these two
I miss Chatfield as a Canuck. It was strange on a team with a terrible blueline that such a responsible defenceman couldn't find a home, but at the time they wanted every defenceman to be a dynamic join the rush kind of guy, despite most of the ones they had at the time not being great skaters.
This fu*cking guy again 🤦♂️
You know, I expect these low level, Below the Mendoza Line type of guests from Donnie & Dhali on their hayride of a show.. Not you guys! I'm not even gonna lie. I think I'd prefer another interview with that random season ticket holder dude that sat behind the glass rather than have to listen to this Seravelli guy. & I'm aware I don't have to watch.. but I like you guys..
Just aspire to do better, thats all.
Douche
He should be introduced as NHL Insider and Vancouver hater
Why keep having this guy on the show? Especially given his obvious disdain for Vancouver and the entire Canucks org. He rarely actually speaks fact it’s just his opinion on things he doesn’t actually know about!
Not always the biggest fan of Severvalli, he can seem to carry a mission letter and or a planted message , but no doubt about it, he is knowledgeable and thinks logically, he is a very good talking head for the podcast.
Hronek may have had a lacklustre second half and playoffs. So did most of the Canucks' roster. He was the only significant difference from last year, prior to the deadline acquisitions. Unfortunately, his minimum arbitration is $7.5 million per season.
The Canucks could easily trade Hronek for the 1st round pick the Canes would want and do a 3 team deal if they wanted.
Personally with Demko in net I absolutely sign Hronek and Tanev for the right side and Zadorov and Hughes making the Canucks extremely strong defensively.
When Willander, D EP, Kudryavtsev… are ready you can ease them in with with vets helping them along.
