okay but uh we so so Sunny gray did not Pitch well and in a trend where he’s been okay but not good okay not good he’s got a 546 RA in his last six starts what’s what’s his over what’s his over what’s his yeah it’s a bad Trend what’s his what’s his overall he been trending okay let me finish he actually says it it’s a bad Trend that he’s on but what’s his he I mean so far this year overall he’s because like there’s a start like I’ve had enough after five I think he’s pitching through something that he won’t say I think there’s not injured but there’s something he’s dealing with that I I haven’t found out it’s just my sense no one’s confirmed that but I think he’s pitching through something so last night I mean there was a stretch where he struck out four straight and looked good yeah and there are other there’s walk walk you know wild pitch it’s just not F Inn was it’s kind of like what you’re not expecting from Sunny gray so anyway he’s waiting cuz he’s a professional he’s waiting for all the media answer the questions the best he can but you could see that he’s that he’s ticked at himself so I when he so he starts and he drops an s bomb and it was I was blank I pitched like blank blank and then he said and it’s a trend it’s a trend going the wrong way like that’s your quote so I text a producer at bal’s and I said hey sbom warning I actually made sure that the the card that it’s recorded on stay with me until I put the warning out there to the producer and I text it now go feed it and I said bleep the word don’t cut it out because that sound bite that part of the quote tells the exact story of Sunny gry in the game and I I’m not there to watch it I’m still in the clubhouse but I went back when I was home and looked at the the clip and they edited just past same sentiment but in this case the sunny gray sound you wanted that in there because again sometimes two sentences tell a whole story and his reaction I think did yeah it did and uh if you want the opinion now maybe maybe there was a boss who said we’re not running it but we’ve bleeped stuff before yeah so I don’t know tells the story Cole Cole was really Cole had to uh do you think he was uh going light on on Sunny gray at the beginning when he was telling that story that is that why you kind of yeah I and I this happened like five minutes ago at this point but I thought you said he was trending okay and I’m like no he’s been Trend I said he he’s been okay he’s trending bad I mean if you look at the overall numbers and plus like Sunny gray isn’t a guy that you expected to go eight Innings every time no and if actually I was looking at it last uh from last season he actually went longer later in the season which I was surprised where you see a couple of sevens in there but this year he hasn’t been going deep he’s had good stuff but the last few haven’t been good and last night was peculiar and he seemed frustrated by it yeah he did I mean he certainly did he seemed had a loss for it too he’s usually very willing to say what’s going on and what’s going through his mind anyway when it comes to pitching and last night I can’t count the number of times that his answer was just like I don’t know that was the that was the answer to his question four or five times and I was going to ask him have you been through it before but he answered that he has been through it before right and he basically said that he just focused on getting ahead and counts and that that was the interesting part right because he said he feels like if anything was to be diagnosed it’s the notion of maybe playing on the edges a little bit too much early in counts and he’d rather just go toward the middle and I don’t know if that’s a conversation that happens with the catchers to say like this is maybe the game plan that I would prefer because he needs to get ahead to be able to use his whole arsenal to put guys away and when he’s pitching from behind I think it becomes a bit of a mental block and so if he’s trying to be too fine on the edges he gets into those hitters counts and then he’s trying to work from behind and that doesn’t really suit his game very well so I wonder if like it was interesting because at first he said I don’t know I I can’t explain what’s going on and then as he was asked more questions it’s almost like he was thinking through it out loud and said maybe that’s a thing that you know I the last time this sort of happened to me what maybe brings me out of it is I I kind of get back to the basics and I need to be willing to work the middle a little bit more get ahead and then be able to kind of pick and choose where you throw those next pitches to put guys away he said that before that his approach to a lot of his pitches is try to land it in the middle of the strike zone which is interesting which is which but he has said that before meaning he’s not really trying to nibble on the corners and his stuff when he’s right has good movement and he does throw a lot of strikes last night was not one of those and the stuff is is good enough I think that if you’re like if you’re trying to throw to the middle it’s not a mistake pitch right but if you can get to that two- strike count that’s when he’s able to expand the zone and I think he becomes lethal because he’s got five pitches that are are going to be able to be thrown for if not strikes they’re going to look like strikes when when they come out of his hand and here’s another thing he said that I really liked cuz you got to admire him like he stands on business like of any picture they’ll say that’s the guy who goes over every detail and it’s methodical about his preparation and he was asked well I mean there was a stretch where you struck out four straight and he’s like who cares that’s not my job my job is to stay on on the mound I like it keep running like accountable here we go I mean I pitch like it’s a trend trending in the in a wrong direction so got to come in and when people text it Nei it doesn’t honestly matter when either I’ll just I’ll look at it when I look at it but to go back to uh to the Cardinals game so it’s the Rockies yeah and the Rockies have a really really bad Bullpen so the Cardinals did enough to come back it was kind of a sloppy game all it was it was kind of like they schocked it up a little but the Cardinals did enough and they’ve won a lot of close games like you think if it’s a close game the Cardinals have the advantage and then it came down to that last stepb gold Schmid gets a hit yep their Bullpen and the knife had had an erra of of eight this guy was this guy’s the the the final pitcher had a decent erra no the last guy Kinley was like an 83 guy before him was Jaylen beaks was a lefty though so they they took him out thank you by the way bud black three- hour game and we’re changing pictures with one out to go saw your I saw your no one wants to hear the media playing the game no no one wants to hear you can’t hang around for 3 minutes of a commercial break no one wants to hear them media complain that it’s too hot too cold I acknowledged that it was just tongue and gave you time to eat more free food okay I didn’t eat anything as we talked about I’m watching my weight he’s losing weight more free drinks water free water see it was free water but they get the match up at the end of the game goldi comes through hadn’t been great this season comes through gets a base hit man on here comes the guy who had six home runs on the road trip 10 home runs since May 10th Gorman and he’s got the right matchup he’s got a righty on the mound and this guy has been locked in yeah he’s had some strikeouts cuz he’s a power guy but he’s been much better with that pitch selection has been the key and he peed down his leg it was an awful of did it was an awful that was for you yeah he kind ofes more frustrating that Gorman at bat or Donovan staring down three strikes the other day stop that’s brutal Donan to me yeah that was at least Gman tried he did but that’s the matchup you want yeah yeah you have like the fish on the line all you got to do is reel them in and they win that game it’s really like the Cardinals kind of they’re they’re kind of I I don’t want to say they’re over the ledge because I think right now I think I think they’re at a point where they’re probably not going to be awful and there’s a chance to be okay they just got to take those steps forward should put that on a t-shirt don’t don’t you think I look I’m not saying a chance to be okay I’m not saying you’re selling TI on the but it’s true and it’s a long way from where they were earlier this season yes but you got to beat the teams you got to beat them that are not good and you got to beat the teams that you have set up to beat them late which you know you’ve done pretty good in close games yeah two out of four against this Rockies team would be an abject failure and they’re they they’ve lost the first one so you got to win the rest of them against the Rockies or you didn’t do your job against this team because at some point you do have to as much as I agree with you they’re not I don’t think going to be terrible this year you have to build on a record to get above 500 at some point and this was the stretch to do it you weathered the storm on the road trip I mean the Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball I know the Astros record but they’ve been playing better and they’ve got a lot of guys over there so to weather the storm on that road trip go four and five I’m not saying you throw a parade for that but it was like okay you did what you had to do there to set up this homeand where you maybe win five out of seven and then you lose the first game with sunny on the mound you you had eight hits six walks and you scored two runs and you can’t it can’t happen I mean the biggest problem this season has been risp right Runners and and they were doing better and now they’ve kind of backslid that’s it’s interesting it’s a big problem but like for a while oie marmal would not characterize it that way he was Bas his point was basically look we are having approach problem overall and so with risp it’s going to be the case as well but I would say as a team they’ve kind of come out of it overall where they’re taking better at bats but still with risp now that’s a more glaring issue because it’s sort of the the Bugaboo if you’re able to get eight hits in a game and your working counts to be able to to walk six times you’re doing something right but to not be able to come through on very many of those they had base runners on the entire night and they scored twice and sometimes if you’re hitting two three homers in a game which they have you don’t look at the risp right because yeah that’s fair and if you’re not hitting homers then suddenly the risp is the glaring well Matt Carpenter kind of hit Homer but then that guy was that guy I got to give him a shout out Michel tolia to say his name to he took it to the G is Sil yeah baby and I didn’t think he had it at first no he had it I thought he had it he caught it it was awesome and then he kind of hid that he had it for like a split second right I thought he I thought he was playing like I don’t have it but he did have it that was a great catch damn good cat you don’t see that kind of catch in that part of of the stadium you know what I mean right field Corner that’s a tough kind of angle to get to a lot of like there there’s nothing better than bringing a homer back it’s fun to watch I don’t care what side of the that’s going to be too for the player one of the most exciting things you can do in game besides let be honest most of those catches or balls it might not have even gotten out this he had this he had to time going on an angle yeah it’s a tough and go back and actually pull it back that was a brilliant catch yeah and it was two two three feet over the wall I mean it was a it was a home run that was legit what’s your take Cole what are you thinking Cole what’s on your mind I think this is a portion of the schedule where you have to collect a lot of wins because we’re starting to do the allstar talk and once we get to the all-star break that’s where we start to talk about it that’s where we start to form whether or not you’re going to be a buyer or a seller or you’re going to do a little bit of both and be Arbitrage at the deadline so the Allstar Weekend is coming sooner than you think and you got a lot of opponents that are beatable here in this stretch with Colorado Pittsburgh Cubs who are kind of trying to figure out who they are they they blew a game against the Reds last night in the Marlins you definitely should be beating up on them so I agree with Brendan like I I never require anybody to sweep anybody especially not in a Four game series but I I I did not expect Bush Jaden to be where five game losing streaks go to die like that that was a game you should have won for sure and I am concerned about Sunny gray because it has been a trend he had a 89 RA in his first six starts and a 5.46 ra in his last six starts so for just as much time as he was one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball he now has an equal amount of time where he has been miles michelet dang it I was thinking that that was going to be the way you characterized it and then I thought that’d be kind of mean but maybe do it you’re right that is mean to Miles Michaels he’s been a little bit better than that it’s like I telepath I was like I’m I might jump in and say seven of his last eight has been quality start or what I would consider better because two of those starts were five and 2/3 with two runs five innings one run which is not technically quality starts center middle of the plate once a game prob you give up last last five starts what do you think uh opponents are hitting hitting against miles Michels last five starts 200 I mean I don’t know he’s first pitch strikes in that 77% League average The League average is like I think below 60 that’s what he does when he’s at his best so he’s getting ahead and counts you’re right though he’s always they’ve got a lot of talent they got a lot of talent and you don’t think so of the Cardinal agree with Brenan on this one the cardal today if you look at the NL Central standings and go by run differential there are four teams that are all just right next to so basically everybody but the Brewers are all right next to each other the reds are positive now the Reds have a really good run differential and the Cardinals have a terrible run differential minus 46 yeah a lot of people put stock in run differential we it’s not even Flag Day yet that’s why but here but here’s the thing they they got to win that last game of the road trip in Houston okay so they’re four and five and people are like that’s not terrible it’s four and five hey they lost that game they’re not four and five no so my point is every win and loss now seems to be sort of a a narrative changer for the Cardinals and what I want to see and you pointed this out you’re playing the Rockies you should beat the Rockies got to win three you got to get to 500 and then you got to make a move if there’s a move in there because you’re in the NL Central being in the NL Central means never having to say you’re sorry because you can lose a lot of games and still be in the hunt it’s an opportunity that I don’t want them to waste do we undersell the Brewers though when we have that conversation because I don’t believe that the Brewers are going to maintain it listen I didn’t believe in him last year but then they sort of did it and I don’t believe in him this year but they are 10 games up on 500 like they’re now granted they’re coming on a little bit of a skid right now they don’t they’re also just less talented they are they are but they keep doing it okay I know that they may have done it last year get away with it I know but they also don’t have Corbin Burns they don’t have Devin Williams they don’t have from last year three allari right now their pitching staff isn’t good and it’s not on his pitches after Tommy John and I don’t know that he ever really found it back he lost like two miles an hour fast but we usually Tommy John happens and we just kind of mentally catalog like yeah he’ll come back and the guy will be fine and I think that is an example in the modern day where he maybe how big is how big is win how much do you think he weighs Mason win yeah what do you think cat according to his baseball he said in January that he was trying to play at a little higher weight so that when he loses natural weight throughout the season he gets down to 180 185 instead of down to 165 170 he’s 180 so he’s 180 I think he’s at least 180 listed at 18 I think he’s I believe that he’s 185 of his life he did put on some a little muscle during the off season so he has a little more pop but he also said my job is to get on face but you see this I think this guy he will admit it if you push him he thinks he’s going to be like the 1520 homework I think he certainly could be too but what impresses me about him is the bat control to be able to guide those swings down the right field line Fair how many times has he done that where he just kind of sticks the Bat Out hits a a liner soft liner into the right field corner or down the right field first base line I mean it’s been really impressive his swing just seems so natural and fluid like he’s so comfortable he’s a good athlete man have to rearrange his body to hit a low like he crushes low balls but he can catch up with the high ones stop coughing I can’t we got to get that you leave the room to do it I was kidding come on pitch I thought was all on Sunny that was just it was awful the second one is kind of like e kind of want to block that but there are two stolen bases in the inning as well Avon Herrera has the lowest caught stealing percentage in baseball of any catcher that has at least 20 opportunities this year and he’s three he’s 3 for 39 with an 077 if you were an 077 batter people are going oh boy that’s tough so he’s thrown three guys out 36 have stolen off of him and it’s it’s I mean it’s been kind of a thing but I think teams are starting to get wise to where they say if we’re on first base and we’ve got anybody with a modom of speed we’re going to test him when the sched next those guys run I did not uh I did not get this in the game last night but it was in pregame cuz I think it’s an important update so yeah I think the Cardinals catching situ I like Herrera I think he’s a good bat he’s young I think he’ll get better but they could use something well Wilson conteras who has a
