WOULD THE NY ISLANDERS TRADE MATT BARZAL AT THE NHL DRAFT? #nhl #nhldraft #sphere #lasvegas #isles

New York Islanders general manager Lou larell and their head coach Patrick W are two of the most successful names in NHL history but this summer they’re both going to have to turn in Hall of Fame performances if they’re going to get the Islanders back on a Stanley Cup run so today we’re going to take a look at the Islanders what their roster looks like and what they could possibly do at the number 20 selection at the NHL draft hey everybody Welcome in clear on the bench is your One-Stop shop for daily fresh hockey content if you go ahead and hit your subscribe button right now every single day we’ll bring you in a new hockey video to enjoy it has been 40 plus years since the New York Islanders have won a Stanley Cup when you look at that team’s history basically they were a really good team between 1978 and 1984 uh that’s when they won those four cups in like six years they won four in a row but they were really good for that six-year period otherwise before and after that they have been very mediocre when I look at this roster uh I don’t see anybody who jumps off at me that really excites me and to be honest with you I see a couple of guys that I think the Islanders should move on from so let’s take a look at who’s running the show and that’s Lou larell he is the longest 10year general manager in the NHL the uh New Jersey Devils hired him back in 1987 when he was the head coach and athletic director at Providence College where he hired basketball coach Rick Patino um when you look at behind the bench they’ve got Patrick W they made the switch halfway through the season W took over they went 2012 in five down the stretch squeaked into the playoffs where they lost to Carolina in the first round I think that was a really good sample size for Patrick W uh and lamello together to get an idea of what this team’s makeup is you saw him against a very very good team in Carolina uh they blew some leads so you knew that they were at least capable of getting out two leads again so this team you know Patrick W and larella they’re going to have to go over this roster big time to see who they’re going to keep and who they’re going to move on from well we look at the number 20 Selections in NHL history the number one guy in the list is Michelle goule he had 1,152 NHL points Larry Robinson considered by many to be the greatest NHL defenseman ever had 958 points and another big name defenseman Brent Burns so far in his career has 838 points other guys who went number 20 in the first round Brian Sutter Martin riny Travis zjack Joel Erikson eek and we’re seeing how that’s panning out and then has this for an awesome name Larry good enough and yes his nickname was Izzy and then you had Hall of Famer Marty broor and then the St Louis Blues took Robert Thomas in the first round at number 20 recent number 20s in the NHL uh 2019 V hola went 2020 Shakir madula and I believe Jersey traded him to San Jose in the teimo Meyer deal 2021 Minnesota took their big go tending Prospect and that’s yesper vad 2022 caps took Ivan Miro shinano uh hopefully you know he’s going to be playing this year with oetkin get oetkin a little bit of a jump start on that goal Chase and then last year the Seattle Kraken took Edward Chalet with the number 20 selection well we look at the Islanders and what they’ve been up to in the number uh the first round recently not a whole lot you know why because in 2019 they took Simon Holstrom in the first round and they have not had a first round pick since however they did a pretty good job at mining out two guys that I think are going to be good players for the Islanders for years to come and that’s Danny Nelson and ATU Roti when we look at the Islanders Ro right now there’s some guys on there I think personally are underachieving and are overpaid and we can start off with Matt barzel in that category $9 million all the way through 20293 Bo Horvat $8.5 million my opinion horvat’s a better player than barzell is Anders Lee listen I know you love the guy and he’s done great things for the Islanders but at 7 million a year for two more years that’s going to hamstring them at some point Brock Nelson one more year at $6 million JG Pou two more years at $5 million he does not do $5 million worth of work on the ice that’s for sure Kyle Paul Mary the guy’s a hustler one year at $5 million and then you got a head scratcher with the Pierre angal signing $3 million all the way through 20293 Casey zazus three years at $2.5 million still Julian gotier one year at $787,000 Hudson fashing one more year at $775,000 then when you look you see the oldtimers and the guys that have been there forever Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin are both ufas I personally think both of those guys have so much mileage they may get like a two-year deal uh with an upand cominging team but I don’t think any playoff teams are going after these two guys and I don’t think they’re going to get paid big time that is for sure they’ve had awesome careers and they’ve done exactly what the Islanders wanted them to do uh but again I think it’s time they’re going to move on they’ve also got four rfas including Oliver walstrom and Kyle mlan in that group when we look at what they’ve got going on on defense again guys getting paid big money for a long time Ryan pulock who outside of Long Island knows who Ryan pulock is and he’s making $6 million all the way through 2029 93 Adam pelich 5.7 million all the way through 2028 29 Noah Dobson one year this year at 4 million and then he is an RFA and you better back up the Brinks truck he is going to get paid Alex Romanov another guy just didn’t see uh how that worked out for the Islanders when they made that deal one year at 2.5 million and then he’s an RFA um you got guys you know on the back end here too and his name is Samuel buuck one more year and then you’ve got four ufas including Sebastian AO and Robert bertuso Scott Mayfield is on the IR and he signed at $3.5 million all the way through 2029 that is a long time uh when we look at the goal tending situation this was a head scratcher for me when the playoffs rolled around IIA soken 8.25 million all the way through 2029 then you have Sean barov 2.75 million for three more years and both of these guys are a little bit older speaking of old the Islanders have nine players on this roster that are over 30 years old uh I thought sokin was going to be their guy going into the playoffs and then they didn’t play him except one game and then he got lit up I believe it was for six goals so um I don’t know if that’s a Patrick W decision I’m sure it was he’s a goal tending you know Hall of Famer he knows the guy when he sees him practicing every day you know if he’s doing what he wants him to do or not uh I am not sure of this one but don’t be surprised maybe the Islanders make a blockbuster deal and they decide that they want to move on from soken and you know there would be a ton ton of teams that would be interested moving forward when we look at what they could do at the draft in the number spot personally I think they should just trade down and acquire some future picks the Islanders don’t have much draft Capital at all moving forward I believe for the next three years they only have like one pick in each round so they don’t have multiple picks or anything going on like that another thing they could do is they could keep the pick and they could take a defenseman because that’s what I would do if I were the Islanders and there’s some bigname guys we saw in the playoffs you got to have big bulky uh agile defensemen who are willing to be physical and can move the puck a guy who fits that bill is at a Finland 6’5 Jesse pulin in another guy and you may hear his name go a lot sooner is Matt Sheran and then there’s another big kid 6 foot three Dominic binka and I’ve been hearing his name rising up the charts as well something else like we just talked about the Islanders could be interested is making a blockbuster trade maybe they want to move on from marzelle maybe there’s a way that they H package Barelle and the number 20 pick and you can get up into the top six you know you could always start off with calling Bill Armstrong at Utah they’re picking Sixth and he’s always up for a good trade uh it could be something that they’re doing just trying to get the roster younger I don’t know that Marner would fit that bill but if it was me and there was a way that they could uh maybe you know just saying hypothetically trade Barelle straight up for Marner If I Were The Islander I would do that in a heartbeat um and again they’ve just got to get this team younger all these guys are over 30 you got a lot of guys locked up for a long time there may not be a whole lot of uh maneuvering on this uh off season at all the Islanders may just look at this team and say hey we’re just going to like you know fine-tune it a little bit but otherwise stand Pat Uh and again the Islanders just in the middle of the pack at number 20 it’s not a desirable pick unless you’re not in the first round um so that’s going to do it for this episode I just wanted to take a look at the Islanders their roster what they uh could possibly do with the number 20 pick if maybe they’re going to make a blockbuster deal leading up to the draft or at the draft let me know what you think down in the comments section let me know if you’re an Highlander fan who do you think they should pick who do you think they should trade who should they keep uh should they try to move up in the draft should they try to move down if you could please hit your like button don’t forget to subscribe and as we always do here at clearing the benches let them know you’re out there

The New York Islanders (colloquially known as the Isles) are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. The Islanders compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, and play their home games at UBS Arena. The Islanders are one of three NHL franchises in the New York metropolitan area, along with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers, and their fanbase resides primarily on Long Island.

The team was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL’s maneuvers to keep a team from rival league World Hockey Association (WHA) out of the newly built Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in suburban Uniondale, New York. After two years of building up the team’s roster, they found almost instant success by securing 14 straight playoff berths starting with their third season. The Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, the seventh of eight dynasties recognized by the NHL in its history. Their 19 consecutive playoff series wins between 1980 and 1984 is a feat that remains unparalleled in the history of professional sports. They are the last team in any major professional North American sport to win four consecutive championships, and to date the last NHL team to achieve a three-peat.
Would they consider trading All Star forward Matt Barzal at the 2024 NHL Draft at The Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada?

  1. 1. Barzal isnt going anywhere, signed long term, I see no shot the Isles Move him. Sorokin I expect a bounceback from. He only played one Playoff game bc he struggled throughout the second half, and Varlamov stepped up. Isles should trade Pageau, trade a 2nd for Ehlers, and pretty much go into next year with that. Keeping the first and one of the seconds is crutial, this team is starting a transition period but they will still be good while during it.
