Los Angeles Dodgers trade for Cavan Biggio
[Music] good morning Dodger fans I am Jeff Spiegel here from Dodger heads presented by Dodger blue.com with a little bit of surprising news this morning Dodgers making a trade and not necessarily for a guy you haven’t heard of either Jeff passon reporting this morning that the Dodgers have agreed to trade with the Toronto Blue Jays to acquire cavon bigio utility man um who will come over he’s got one year of Team control remaining after this year 29-year-old who plays all over the place second base Third Base first base Outfield in exchange the Dodgers are going to be sending right-handed reliever Braden fiser who has split time between double A and Triple A hasn’t been particularly good bigio had been DFA out of off of the 40-man roster the Blue Jays earlier and so hence the Dodgers jumping in and making a TR now the question here is what exactly are the Dodgers going to do with a move like this and what exactly are they getting in a player like bigio bigo’s sort of his his stats are interesting when you look at because obviously it’s the name recognition we’re talking about Craig bigo’s son so that gets people excited you remember the Blue Jays a few years ago when they were this young exciting team and it was vlad’s son it was bigo’s son uh it was bashet son all coming up together well it’s worth pointing out that bigio from a prospect perspective was never necessarily on the level of those guys he believe he was at one time in 2019 a top 10 Prospect in the blue jay system but that was it but he comes up and he hit really well 2019 100 games he hit 16 home runs he’s got an Ops of about 800 weighted runs created plus of 115 and he’s giving you average defense on the other side 2020 comes back 659 games that season uh again an Ops over 800 100 we to runs created plus of 122 and so all of a sudden at 24 and 25 you’re looking at a guy in bigio again you’re viewing as a Cornerstone for your franchise potentially a recognizable name kind of a a fun guy in a core group of players unfortunately from there it’s been downhill 2021 79 games weighted runs created plus of 84 2022 97 games 97 weighted runs created plus 2023 1111 games pops back up above to 103 again 100 is League average in the stat and then this year hitting just 200 an Ops of 624 and an 88 weighted runs created Plus what’s interesting to me and people aren’t going to like this but when you look at his stat cast when you look underneath the hood and you’re asking yourself who does cavon bigio remind you of it sounds a lot like Gavin lux’s profile for me you’ve got a li hitting sort of he’s more of a utility man than Lux is but he’s a light hitting guy who you’re kind of hoping for League average slightly above again I would argue that lux may even have more offensive upside given that we saw his offensive upside in 2022 rather than way back in 2019 but the offensive profile is this he doesn’t Chase he’s one of the best in baseball when it comes to not chasing I believe in 2019 he was 100th percentile in Chase rate and he walks a ton 98 percentile in walk rate back in 2019 if you look this year and fast forward ahead again the Chase rate remains awesome only chasing 177% of the time he’s walking almost 11% of the time so what the Dodgers are getting are a guy who’s got a little bit of potential a little bit of upside somebody that maybe you think you can tap into and get a little bit more out of than the Blue Jays were getting out of he’s not going to hit for a ton of power although he did hit 16 home runs back in 2019 so maybe there is some power there but typically the profile here is a line drive type hitter who’s not going to chase outside the T Zone who going to work counts and who’s going to take his walks and the hope is that maybe this is just simply an upgrade over Kik Hernandez’s bat an upgrade over Chris Taylor’s that bat there aren’t crazy splits here it’s not like oh he mashes lefties and struggles against righties uh he’s pretty equal there uh from the left side offensively and so he’s 29 years old um so we’ll see we’ll see if the Dodgers can turn a guy like this into something the cost appears to be just about nothing and you know as somebody said on social media when the Dodgers jump and grab a guy like this it should kind of scare you if you’re the Blue Jays and maybe even other teams in the league because the last thing you want is the Dodgers to turn around and make him into something sort of unlock something that you had not been able to and so cavon bigio is a Dodger according to Jeff passon no move no no word on the corresponding 40 Man move so that’ll be interesting I speculated we haven’t gotten much in the way of updates on Ryan brazer Joe Kelly lately so is it possible one of those guys moves to the 60 day iil to open up a spot or do the Dodgers get crazy here and is a guy like Kik Hernandez headed out of town and getting DFA is there a reliever maybe Nick Ramirez who’s not on the major league roster who could get DFA that that remains to be seen as we’re recording this video that has not been um sort of published yet so again cavon bigio traded to the Dodgers Braden Fischer minor league reliever who’s bounced between able a and AAA sent back to Toronto Dodgers will have to open up a spot on the 40 man roster stay tuned to Dodger blue.com for all the updates once a corresponding move is made once the Dodgers speak on this we will have all those updates over on Dodger bl.com so make sure you check that out of course make sure you subscribe ring the notification Bell here on do dodgerblue Note: Dodgers do currently have 1 open spot on their 40-man roster
Jeff…. Dude, you need to say his name right.
A utility man that's an improvement over Chris Taylor and Kiké? I'm in
Don’t let the last name fool you… he is not what yall think
Too many of these under 200 hitters.
Cavon? You serious
So a more versatile Lux without the front office hype. Surely an improvement over Taylor.
Well, the Dodgers need more offense and persons on base. Yesterday I was glad to see Mookie Betts get a bases loaded double and bring in 3 runs. I know they hit homeruns, but I’m worried they have become codependent on the home run ball. They are horrible in RISP other than the home run and I’d like to see more line drive hits like Mookies yesterday. They were up 3 to 1 and hit just broke open the game, and really broke Texas. They weren’t in it after that run scoring line drive double. I hope they hit and can score runs when Glasgow pitches. They barely give him any run support and he’s leading the league in strike outs at 117. Come on Dodgers help a pitcher out.
Hell yea, Cavon Biggio baby ✌🏼
Dodgers dont need biggio, they need pitching not hitting.
He has higher OBP than bottom 4 players, we need bottom lineup to get on base for the top guys
That guy is rlly nothing special
Covon?? Who’s covon ?
The big news is the lack of "What's up, everyone!" from Jeff, lol.
Inspite of this move, which is very promising in my opinion since I’ve watching the Blue Jays too when I get a chance and Biggio is an okay player..I’m still hoping they’d call up Andre Lipcius too and give him a shot!!💯💙
Low risk super high reward the dodgers will churn out another max muncy
DODGERS NEED TO GET RID OF LUX , for anything picks water boy or something…. LuX needs to goo
i thought they dfa'd vargas to make room… maybe not
Vargas sent down
If he works the counts, between the walks he gets and making the pitchers work more, is already an improvement
Jeff, where have you been the past 5 years? Do you only watch games with NL players? How do you not know how to pronounce Cavan Biggio’s name????
Friedman wants to corner the market on players who can't hit their weight. Yuck.
was not a trade. the dodgers didnt get rid of anything to acquire him. he was dfa'd. dodgers claimed him. no money spent no player traded.
Dodgers like the Swiss Army knives
He doesn’t chase, but he doesn’t swing at 3rd strikes either.
If the other players in the lineup will just hit, I don’t think other teams will worry about Biggio.
His a good player only problem is this .. he strikes out looking a lot .. he needs to swing on the 3rd strikes not just look at the ball
Nothing here, move on. Shoulda went hard after Bichette!!!
His he related to Craig ???
Jays fan here. Biggio is a patient dude at the plate and he is basically average-average at everything else. There's more there than we got. Fisher looks decent. Enjoy boys
cuh-VON? He's been in the Majors for five years. a) You should have heard his name before, or b) Do 20 seconds of research if you're not sure.
Salute, Mr. Jerry West
This pickup may be like a Justin Turner. Hopefully, he'll do well in this lineup.. & turn it around. This trade deadline & July will be interesting.
He’s got a lot more defensive versatility than Lux.
Its Cavan….not Cavaan. Dingdong
Hope this means they'll drop CT3
Cavan needed to get away from the bad hitting coach that has been ruining the Blue Jays for the past couple of seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if Cavan suddenly does really well with a different hitting coach. His new coach should pull up video of Cavan from June of 2021. He was on fire that month, until he got injured again.
Dude absolutely crushes walks, destroys walks. You'll never see a bigger walk. One time in the minors Cavan was upset about a strike call, they looked at the statcast and saw it was a strike, but the next day it was discovered the statcast was misaligned. The dude walks. Cavan is right, the umpire and the machines are wrong.
Can you explain now, post-video, as to why Vargas was the move made? I saw Roberts said something like “he needs more consistent playing time.” Yes…same with Outman…but why can’t they give him those ABs? I just don’t get it. You trade for a .200 hitter and send down a .200 hitter but someone you keep claiming as a big upside. The implication with Vargas and Outman is that they’ll be back at the Show soon…but why? You don’t plan on playing them everyday. Why not just trade them?
You go Cavin. Toronto never gave you a chance.
No Respect for Rojas,……..Biggio sucks/ Dr. Sucks
