23-24 Season Grade: Teuvo Teravainen | Carolina Hurricanes Podcast #carolinahurricanes #causechaos

all right it’s time to pull out the grade book once again this time we get to talk about Tavo Terra Vining and somehow I don’t quite agree with the fans on this grade on a Tuesday edition of lockdown hurricanes your locked on hurricanes your daily podcast on the Carolina hurricane part of the locked on podcast Network your team everyday welcome to a Tuesday edition of locked on hurricanes your team every day part of the locked on podcast Network thank you to the everyday for making this your first Liston of the day five days a week Monday through Friday talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes I’m your host Zack Martin I am the Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the hockey Riders I do some AHL coverage over at the caller times I am also the co-host of the search cast which a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast that’s along with all my duties here at locked on Hurricanes got a turbo Tuesday episode for you guys today as we get to do the grading season that is the 2023 24 season of one Tavo terrain looking at his season overall and kind of at the end of the show give what the fans graded him on social media also give him my grade as well and I’m actually kind of excited to talk about that because I think for the first time you know out of the first four episodes of doing this I kind of have a different letter grade than what the actual fans gave him on social media but before we get into all of that for today’s episode today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet it’s $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started so like I said we’re going to jump into the grading season that is one Tavo Terra vinan and looking back overall in his season he had 25 goals 20 assists for 53 points in 76 games he actually finished with a plus 15 which to keep his string of plus Seasons alive since being with the Carolina Hurricanes and he also got six points in 11 games in the playoffs as well so for his plus 15 that gives him his his seventh straight season of finishing Plus for the Carolina Hurricanes he had he started the streak back in 201718 where he finishes a plus eight and then 1819 he was a 30 then 20 five 2211 last year in this past season 15 so really really awesome to see for t for Tavo Terra into i’ say his first year in Carolina back in 16117 he’s actually since the 2017 18 season has been a plus player for the Carolina Hurricanes I don’t think he’s ever going to touch the plus 30 that he had back in the 189 season where he had 76 points which was a career points-wise for him but it’s still good to see overall the fact that he kept this plus streak alive and for the fact you look at how he was this year compared to last season he actually had a bounceback back in the 2223 season he actually hadit 37 points in 68 games of course he dealt with injuries you know unfortunately had to deal with the death of his grandfather and it was just not the greatest season overall for him on our off the ice and you really can’t blame because going through a lot someone who is quiet like Tavo terraine is you could tell it was kind of Weighing on him and you kind of have to give him a little bit of a grace period on just how you know that season was for him last year but looking at him this year you love to see a bounce back from him you know three more sits compared to last year his career best and assist is 55 back from the 18 19 season that’s also his best Point Season as well so he did have 28 assists did get back up into the 50s he had 53 jumping back from the 37 that he had before and the good thing too is for the fact that you look at T ter Ryan’s goal scoring this was his best season goal scoring wise ever in his career and I’m not talking just the NHL I’m talking ever ever ever ever in his career for the fact that he had 25 goals his next best was 23 back in the 1718 season and the other season he had 22 back in 21 22 and he also had 21 goals in the 1819 season but his 25 goals this past season was the best ever in his career so while the assists were a little bit up his points were back up his plus minus was better he had a career year goals wise and even in the playoffs too he did score two goals did have six points so tonight’s bounce back from just the one point that he had in six games in the playoffs back in 2223 but of course he dealt with injuries then too in the postseason but overall what a year goalwise for table Terror vience we had a lot of Turbo times this past season for the Carolina Hurricanes he actually did score the first goal of the season on opening night as well so you love to see that for him you know kind of open the season up with his first goal of the Year along with just Barry cook Andi him and the two fins were actually kind of leading the way for the hurricanes on their you know when they kind of had a slow start to the season for the first month and a half it was kind of like almost all the goal scoring was either just bar kmy or with Tav Terra Vine and of course you know overall through the season you kind of see like he started doing a lot more passing as the season went on but I think where the hurricanes are at you know it’s good to see that he was kind of the one that was clicking early for them kind of you know quieting the naysayers overall and it’s it’s good to see for a bounceback season that he had like I said his points went back you his points overall went back up he got a few more assists that he compared to last year but for the fact in terms of goals he actually jumped 13 more goals to make it a career year you know a career season best for goal scoring you’ll take that any day of the week for Tav ter Vine and and just if you’re a car hurricanes and for the fact too you know he did have six points in the playoffs so the last time he had a really good number of points was back in the 2122 season already he had 11 and then the season before he had six so it’s good to see you know his point he was getting points in the playoffs he had 25 goals and that’s something you’ll graciously take if you’re a fan of the team and for the Hurricanes overall as well so that’s really awesome to see from him in terms of looking at the team overall and kind of where he stacked up for the hurricanes in terms of goal scoring he was third on the team the only two guys he was behind was Seth Jarvis had 33 and Sebastian was 36 so he was third on the team in goals know next person was Martin eaches at 24 then I just fetch aov at 19 and the terms of assists he was eighth on the team and assist so you’ll take that you’ll take he he was eighth and assist and he was also tied for third on the team in points with Martin n’s only behind Seth Jarvis is 67 and Sebastian I’s 89 and in terms of the plus minus he was actually tied for six on the team with plus 15 along with Bray and Jaylen shaffield and you know in terms of shots he was in the top 10 had 142 shots but shooting percentage wise he was actually second on the team with 17.6 so honestly not a bad season for t Tan V like I said shooting percentage second best on the team top 10 in shots you know he had four game-winning goals you know which put him fourth the team only behind fet kov AO and Jarvis you know he did have one short handed goal so you like to see that he also had nine Power Play Goals which puts him third on the team only by an a who is 11 and Seth jvis is 13 so I mean he only hadit 10 pins this year too that puts him way at the bottom of the list compared to almost everyone else on the team but points wise you’re tied for third you know you’re third in goal scoring you’re eighth in assists you’re top 10 in shots so the for the fact you’re looking at the actual goal numbers I mean you’ll take that you’ll take that for a bounce back season from T Terra vinan and I don’t know how much more happy you can be with that honestly I mean you you’re coming back from 37 points the year before you get 53 you’re kind of setting yourself up to have a good year you know overall and you kind of did you you get 25 goals you know you you’re already getting you already get 13 more than you had before but for the fact that your entire playing career not just in the NHL but you’re talking going back to playing in Finland you know you know the under 16 teams the national teams even playing with the Blackhawks and the fact he’s been with the Hurricanes for so long too to be able to see where he’s at is really great to see in the fact that you know in a contract year it’s huge bounceback for him and I think you look at that and say okay you know you you have to be happy with that yeah you know still like I said top three you know tied for thir and points the goals were there you know he kind of led the way for the team for the first month in the half of the Season wi for you know AO and Jaris someone else to get going but who knows what the season would look like if it wasn’t for ter Terra Vine and just buried C and yumy so I think overall you can’t ask for more Tera Vin yeah towards the end of the season he was playing a lot of more passing than he was scoring but you know he’s he’s always been a facilitator he’s not been the guy who score a butload of goals and then you can see that clearly that 25 was his best ever so you know he’s more of an assist guy you can clearly sit on the Statue and just how he plays and he’s more of a facilitator and you you take you take a Caesar’s 25 goals and over 50 points okay you you’ll gladly take that so and like I said the fact you did in a contract season where we coming against Sher free agian that is very very huge and that’s something that could really play into the off season so you know what we’re g to talk about you know T terra’s you know the contract he just got finished up what he be looking at for under restricted free agency as well part of the Season grade so we’ll get to all that here in a second on a Tuesday edition of lockdown hurricanes summertime means baseball the NBA finals and more you can it all on FanDuel right now new customers get $200 in bonus BS with any winning $5 bet that’s 200 bucks you can use to BU anything from finals MVP to who to who’s going to hit the one out of the park and also two golf is going on as well I know Bryson D Shambo just won the US Open at Pioneers number two so there’s probably a lot of good golf stuff on there as well and we are so kind of in the midst of the Stanley Cup Final so make sure to check out all those as well along with baseball in the NBA finals and how you can check all that well you just got to visit v.com and use and you go SL and you go and use code lockon or fanduel.com lockon and add a big win to your summer bucketless FanDuel America’s number one sports book welcome back to a segment two of locked on hurricanes your team every day so we kind of went over in the first segment talk about t ter season overall you know just how he had you know a career and goals his points jump back up had pretty good assist season as well in the fact he kept his plus minor streak alive and staying in a Plus on the team and we kind of started you know teasing a little bit talking about the contract that just ended for the fact it was a contract year you know a contract season for t t way can be looking at this upcoming uh summer as he’s going to be an unrestricting free agent so looking at his contract he just got done with for the Carolina Hurricanes that he signed back in January 2019 that got him through the 2023 24 season was a five-year $27 million deal he signed with former general manager and president of hockey Ops Don wadell that saw him get $5.4 million aav and looking at AFP analytics they actually do have him projected at 29 years old who does he does play both Wings he has a left-hand shot he is a UFA they are projecting to get that he’s going to get a 4-year 5.23 four million contract which is projected to take a cap hit percentage of 5.95 and his projected total value of that deal will be 20939 million so you look at the fact that the contract he just got done with was at 5.4 and his projected deal that they’re looking at he could possibly get is a 5 234 now it’s a little bit of a drop not a huge one in terms of what AFP is projecting if I’m the Hurricanes I think that you look at how you know he did ever he did have a bounceback season he did get over 50 points he did get them you know a career high in goals at 25 did get points in the playoffs you know you could you could see him ask for 5.4 5.5 once again 5.2 is not out of the a possibility I would like for T ter to come back and I think if you give him a 4X five I think that could possibly work do you want to give him he’s only 29 years old do you know what you get out of him he’s a top six left Winger he plays on the power play mainly power play two he could sneak in the power play one sometimes yes he has jumped up and down the lp recently but he did like I said he did have a bounceback season he did have 25 goals I really solid season overall for for Turbo and I think a 4×5 could work if if he if he’s okay with takeing a little bit of a pay cut you’d make $400,000 less you give him five over four years you’re looking at him going going to being 33 years old I wouldn’t really be upset with that I could definitely see a deal where you could see him get a really good it’s still a good amount of money you know it’s you know a little bit of a pay cut from what he had but you get more flexibility he’s 29 years old he he knows the system he’s like I said he’s been with the team for so long like he came you know with the team you know originally back in the you know he signed a deal back in June 2017 with when Ron Francis was the general manager of the Hurricanes where was two years of $ 5.72 million which was only a capit of 2.86 and then you go into the you know his bigger contract of 5.4 so he’s been with the team as an unrestricted free agent pretty much since 201617 and he’s been here ever since then because you’re talking back in eight seasons he’s been with the Kans for eight years it’s basically almost it’s basically his entire career for the most part because he had three years in Chicago and he comes to Carolina and you know it’s where yeah wasn’t well that’s that’s was a he wasn’t part of he was in that trade with Brian bigle back in June sign a contract not to 2016 second second round pick which was um you know turned into AR uh arter kov and the 2017 third round pick which turned into Keith petrielli so nothing really of significance for the Blackhawks there and the Hurricanes did get Brian ble and T table terrain so you know he does come over in a trade and not to you know right around that same so it’s one of those things where you know you try I can see to where it makes sense to keep him you know you know you get out of the guy he’s basically spent almost his entire he’s over half his career in Carolina you know what point you know he can produce you know you need a guy who’s a good facilitator I think he can do that he can play on either wing and I don’t see why it wouldn’t make sense to keep him around you’re talking like I said AFP is saying four years you could give him a 4×5 you could give him a threo 52 or four 54 if you want to keep them in that same number it’s shorten the term a little bit then yeah you could do that too but I think a 4×5 could potentially work you know it’s a little bit of you know it’s a little bit of a decrease but you get more flexibility but you kind of almost keep him toward He’s 33 and maybe it’s his last contract who really knows but it keeps him in Carolina you know he’s still surrounded by all the other fins you know with chb cook Andy Sebastian AO you know maybe they get some other fins and trades this offseason and who really knows and of course you got the honary fin in Seth Jarvis as well so I mean for me it just kind of makes sense to keep him around you know what you’re G to get out of him you know he did have a career you know he did have a bounceback season great set of you know got a lot of goals I just I just don’t see a I don’t see a scenario where you don’t bring him back because you f in your top six it just makes sense honestly to keep him around you know the guys love him he’s a fan favorite doesn’t show a lot of emotion but that’s kind of one of the you know the quirks of Teo terraine then just keeping him around would be beneficial so I think a 4×5 could easily work to keep him around so I guess we’ll see it’s like I said it’s not a big drop off from what his previous contract was and he’s been here for so long honestly you let him write it out just finish his finish his career with the hurricanes and you’re talking 12 seasons in Carolina he’s already got eight under under his belt give him another four make it to 12 years and be and that’s it so I guess we’ll see how it works out but that’s kind of what the Contra that’s what his contract was I do possibly see them bringing him back and I think a five I think $5 million per season for four years could be a really solid deal for both sides so I don’t know let me know what you think in the comments do you think a 4×5 works for t terent or where you give them a little bit less and maybe bump it back up to 5.4 so I’m kind of curious to see what everyone thinks in the comment section if you’re on YouTube and all that stuff so we went over the season overall we looked at his past contract that just expired and what a potential new contract could look like big thanks to AFP analytics for all their projections and stats there really really amazing make sure to go check them out uh if you can so with that being said we are going to go to the grading part of the podcast where we see what the fans gave him and what grade I gave him because like I said for the first time I think it’s a completely different letter grade than what the fans give usually it’s either Like A Plus or a minus differential I think it’s a whole grade letter difference so we’ll get to that here in a second on a Tuesday edition of lock on hurricanes welcome back to a segment three of lock on hurricanes your team every day so like I said at the end of segment two we are now going into to the grading part of the podcast and what you know went to act like usual like how we done for the previous three with Sebastian AO Seth dvis and Martin eers if you haven’t checked those out please make sure to go do so I’ve really been enjoying um doing these season grades overall like try we’re hoping to get the whole team done before the start of next season so on X Out of 61 votes a little bit smaller than our usual votes usually we’ve usually had about 100 votes this time we were at actually a little bit under so 10% gave terrain an a 28% gave him a c 1% gave him a d or F this is like the second time I’ve seen a d or F score for these guys I really want to see why people are giving some of these guys D or F grades I really want to know about that because it’s very interesting how guys were who finished higher on the stat sheet kind of someone gives them that type of grade but overall 61% did give Tavo terrain a b on the season and I can potentially see why people might want to give him a Beat Just because of the fact that it’s just he had a hot start to the reg to the start of the Season then kind of you know started doing a lot more passing not much shooting as we saw at the start of the years he kind of reverted back to where he was more of a facilitator and honestly he’s a facilitator I mean that’s what you kind of get from him and I know a lot of people love to see more goals scoring out of T teravan but he’s not really much of a score the fact he did score 25 so I really don’t know what more you can really ask for out of him where he’s gotten you know a career high in goals yeah maybe the assists weren’t higher like they usually are but I mean it was a bounceback he did have three more than the previous season and he did get 53 points so it’s kind of surprising how people gave him like some people gave him a c was 28% the 10% gave him an a I can see where a lot of people give him an a it kind of makes sense why he would get that just because you look at his points totals think and the fact he had a bounce back here I can definitely see where the a is but I can I can understand why people say B you know it’s just you know a hot start to the season kind of dropped off later on you know towards the back and did a lot more passing than shooting had an okay playoffs you know wasn’t you know wasn’t like you know World beating but he still put a points he got six in 11 games so you’ll take that so 61% gave him a B I can see where the B comes from see I guess because of the fact that it’s like you would expect more of a guy like T Terra vinan but after the season he had the year before in 2223 dealt with a lot had under 40 points you kind of give him like okay you know you had a r here personally you know come back next year do well he did he did have a bounceback and I think he played really really well so the 20% C I can maybe see it B makes sense for a lot of people just of how his season was like I said really hot at the start kind of faded in the back end but the 10% who said a I agree with that 10% I think Tampa Terin had a pretty good season overall I think a lot I think it’s better than a b now I’m not saying it’s a fullblown a it’s not a full a grade for me I am actually G to give my first minus grade but it is going to be an A minus for Tavo terraine now like I said I agree with the fact that you kind of saw a fast start to the beginning of the year you know still the still second on the team in the shooting percentage was you know top 10 in shots you kind of wish you saw more shooting out of him you kind of hope that you saw more of that as it went on through the season but overall I mean like I said he’s not much of the shoot first type he’s more of the passing type so I can see where that is but the fact that you look at how he had a bounce back here going from 37 to 53 that’s a good that’s a good bit of a jump and you see a goal jump jump to of 12 to 25 and for in a contract season where you get 25 goals was is the most ever in your entire playing career we’re talking hurricanes Blackhawks you know going back to Finland and stuff like that I I kind of give him a boost just because of that just because the fact you look at a career high in goals most ever did did in a contract season and the fact that he kind of led the he kind of you know was leading the way early on I kind of get Terra Vine in that little extra boost of okay yeah you kind of wanted to you wanted to see him kind of project it and play like that way through the whole season rather than just you see part of it and then you kind of see it fade as the year goes on you kind of wish it kind of I’m not seeing it the pace that he was that where he was scoring like almost a goal every night but if you kind of see where he was you know two points a night maybe a goal and assist maybe two assists you know or you’re at seeing some you know there are some games where it’s like there’s a stretch of he’s not putting up a lot of points he’s kind of just having you know a ho hum game or it’s you know it’s like one game he gets like four points or he gets three then he gets like zero for the next two or three and then he gets like two or three games where he’s getting like two or more I’m not saying you have to put up a point every night but I think you want to see a little bit more consistency out of t you kind of want to see where like if you’re going to be you’re going to have a good start to the season you kind of want to see him maybe carry that throughout the whole season overall maybe have like maybe 60 65 points rather than 53 maybe you want to see 25 goals and maybe that’s as Max as 25 but you want to see like maybe 30 assists then okay then I could see where okay now we’re talking of where it’s 30 assists 35 assists then we’re like okay now we’re having a Terrain in where it’s like okay this guy’s not scoring a lot but he’s facilitating a lot he’s getting the primaries he’s getting the secondary assists but you’re talking 60 65 point Seasons then you’re like okay then then we’re then we’re cooking with gas but I think overall though it was a bounceback year going from 37 to 53 you know kind of struggled for the season previous this year you kind ofum to go up and down the lineup a little bit he was hurt a little bit too but overall I gota give him an A minus like I said you got a bounce back you know Season overall you put up points in the playoffs you kind of was carrying the team for the first month and a half you know when they slow start but you got a career high in goals I think that gives me the I think that gives me the confidence of being okay I can see why people say a b but the 10% who said an a I agree with you that it’s an a season from him but I think it’s more of the a minus to where it’s he did all these things that were great to get him into the a range but I think some of the drawback of where he you know where you could H to see him do it for the whole season I think that’s why it’s more of an A minus grade but I don’t think it got to the point where it was a b season from him if that makes sense but you let me know in the comments section you know if you’re on YouTube do you agree do you think the a minus is a proper score for him or do you kind of agree with the 61% that gave him a b or you know maybe you don’t agree with the a minus or B maybe you have a completely different grade let me know in the comments what you think of the season that was for T Terra vinan along with you know like I said back in segment to what type of contract do you want to give him do you want to give him that 4X five so it’ll be very very interesting but for me I think T terv stays I think he gets a decent contract to keep him here for another three or four years and Grading wise overall I give him an A minus I I see why Feld gave him the B so you know what the fans gave him a be totally fine I can see where you’re coming from with that but I agree with the 10% that’s said a my grade overall will be an Aus for Tavo Tera of Vine but that will wrap up today’s 1. I give Turbo a solid B. I feel RBA's lines were poorly put together in the playoffs. I did not like the Turbo Staal Jarvis line. ThCanes got away from their bread and butter with the Staal line being your checking line and it cost them. They did not have that heavy checking line Vs the Rangers. Martinook should have been with Staal. Necas had zero help on the second line with zero offense Drury, and Martinook. That series could have been different with better line combos. I also feel they got away from passing the puck to Turbo on the PP in the playoffs. He was on the second unit in facor of Guentzal. I did not agree with that as it wasn't working and at some point a coach needs to make a change but he did not.
