n [Music] hey Chicago what do you say this is the chgo Cubs podcast and uh I’m once again uh marking myself safe from the Chicago Cubs from uh them possibly hurting me they did not hurt me today credit to them but they almost did you all got to see it on our live stream that we just did shout out to everyone in the chat who was watching uh the live stream today watch along Cody delmendo Cory fredman hello how’s it going man how you feeling after that one relieved yeah exactly relieved is the best way to put it um shout out to uh grillin with Dad if you were watching the the watch along he was here um serving up his spices and uh grilling up some good uh pork for Uso Illinois pork um so uh definitely check him out we definitely bring him up again at some point in the show but I I don’t know where to start like I was hoping we we we felt like this game Cory that oh this is going to just be a a nice easy Feelgood win up six to one Swanson gets the big hit you how D of us get a couple more runs after that you know yeah exactly how dumb of us and then and then the bullpen you know our friends at phnx yeah pH andx that uh phnx Diamondbacks they always tweet you know that that scene from SNL of the guy who says ladies and gentlemen it’s the weekend Daniel Craig you mean yeah yeah yeah I always forget who that guy is but anyway they they take that scene but instead of it’s saying it’s the weekend it says the bullpen yeah then like I feel like I need to just steal that gift from them and start using it because it’s the most it’s the easiest way to explain it and I think the way to start though they won the series they won the series that that’s the the focal point it was not pretty uh this whole series really was not pretty there’s we saw a lot of the same stuff that we’ve seen But at least in this series they were able to get the big hit in the game last night and Come Away with the win Keegan Thompson shutting it down and today the offense built a lead starting pitching was good again we’ll talk about Kyle Hendricks of course but they they they pull out the W and I think Tyler said it earlier in the YouTube chat but we talked about it like in the the watch along and coming into this homand these are teams you’re competing with in that wild card spot so pretty or not you took to a three in your own building which is what you needed to do they haven’t won a series since those two games with the white socks that congratulations for beating the White Socks by a single run it’s been a rough stretch as Luke has been monitoring in terms of Series wins they won a series day off tomorrow the Mets coming in another team that you’re fighting with in that NL Wild Card race win another series we’ll we’ll take it day by day but it was a sweat you guys got to see it live on our watch along at C on the CHD Sports YouTube page they won the series we can breathe for today go into the off day with a W two games in a row it it’s okay for now I like the way that you shifted it this is why you lead the shows on Sundays um the chat there’s a lot of a lot of Kyle Hendricks in here and Kyle Hendricks was awesome today man excellent and I said it during the watch along like when he you know after he came out I think Kevin was sitting on the third seat over um like I was just happy for him individually as like a for him not it had nothing to do with the team uh he’s been off awful this year right uh but those four and a third Innings last Friday um when he came in relief for because Jordan Wicks got hurt um and then today on a a hot day the wind blowing out he goes out there and gives you five noit innings ends up going five and 2/3 five and a third five and two3 something like that and he gave you exactly what you needed today you you absolutely needed a strong start from him today considering where the bullpen at considering the fact that you won last night and you like you just said they didn’t win they hadn’t won a series outside of beating the white socks since like miday right so his appearance was significant and it was huge and um yeah I I give him all the credit like I’m not saying he’s like back or that he deserves to that we should forget about what happened all I’m saying is that I’m just happy for the guy absolutely I mean look and with Wix is back now but obviously he was out with injury Justin steel has Miss time this year with injury Ben Brown on the iil dealing with injury you you need guys to step up and be able to make those starts and this was a really good one from Kyle Hendrick a hot day uh what felt like a hitters environment and he was really good and and that’s piggybacking off of coming in uh on Friday in a bad situation with Wicks leaving early in that game and shutting down uh the Cardinals on that day as well so this is back-to-back really strong outings from Kyle Hendrick and like you said we don’t have to look forward and say oh yeah he’s back in the rotation or he’s back to himself or anything but just day by day man like you need people to get outs and we see it with this bullpen and trying to figure out those roles you just take take the one day and I I said it during our watch along and you guys know as much as I hate to give credit to uh Dr Brendan Miller but he he he ate a lot of uh grief I think from the YouTube chat for not immediately jumping on the he’s washed you got to DFA him all that other you know that train early in the year and it’s not to say that the belief was there that he would pitch like this or that he would be back or anything but I think Brendan’s main point was there is real value to this team in trying to get Kyle even close to right M fast ball velocity looks good curveball has good spin change up looked really good today the stuff looks pretty good the mechanics might be off or were off the inconsistency you know command wasn’t there like we’ve seen with Kyle in the past but but you saw today you need the value that Kyle Hendricks can provide even if he’s only able to pitch like this occasionally that has value to this team when you’re dealing with injuries and you’re you know you have guys like Javier Assad who’s only going four or five innings at a Time Justin steel you might need to manage those Innings as the year goes on same with all these guys like if there were better options immediately earlier in the year fine then you know maybe you could have moved on from him but it was worth sticking with and seeing if you could get it right even if it’s just for these couple starts they needed somebody to step up today and Pitch like this and he did and we’ll deal with tomorrow tomorrow but this was a really really good start from Kyle Hendrick to keep this team in the game and we talked about it in the watchalong man like this starting staff I don’t know what more you could want from a starting pitching group these starting pitchers have been excellent for the Chicago Cubs you can look at the whole year they’ve been really good but this last like two three week stretch they have been they have kept this team in the in the game and given them a chance to win every single night and they deserve better than the win loss record that they’ve received as a result but if the offense can find ways to scratch across a little bit more runs Bullpen stop blowing so many leads the these starters have been really really good yeah I mean you said it best I think someone in the chat I missed their name but they mentioned the eight strikeouts and I don’t remember the last time Kyle Hendrick had eight really good today and like I I said in postgame at the very end of postgame if you’ve watched all or listened all the way through the end of postgame last night I said that the Cubs were going to win today uh and that Kyle Henrik was going to shove against the Giants because that’s what he did at Oracle Park last year um at Oracle he was a lot better in terms of length I think he was able to go like seven or eight innings in that game but um he also had like no hitter going in that game as well so I don’t know what he has against the Giants and the Giants roster is pretty much the same as last year I don’t know what what he does what the way that their lineup sees him but yeah just him getting lined up against them them today uh you know worked out and yeah yeah it’s the starring rotation continues to be great and you know this bullen’s got to get it figured out eventually I know like right now this Bullpen we know this isn’t at full health like yeny alonte and Julian Merryweather are they would you know be getting a lot more appearances and you probably wouldn’t have to use lighter as much as they probably have um and then you know even guys like Daniel Palencia who has you know high velocity and whoever else that I’m that’s on the injured list that I’m not that I haven’t mentioned you know Alay if he could just have been even something in Middle relief right but like you said they got to find a way to score they scored six runs today and that should be enough to win the game but we also were super frustrated for most of the game right uh watching the offense like the ending that the bases loaded with no outs and Bellinger hits one right back to the pitcher that turns second base you couldn’t move over just yeah and then you know whatever happened after but still it’s like like moments like that it even though they scored six runs today you wa you watch this game out and you’re like how did they not score 10 you know yeah I’m not going to complain runers and scoring I’m not going to complain about the offense today because you did put up six runs and you got the big hit that led to you winning the game but they still are one of the worst teams in baseball with runners in scoring position I think both can be true like your pitching staff last night you scored five tonight today you scored six your pitching staff needs to make that work like more often than not if your offense is putting up five or six runs you got to find ways to make that work at the same time you can still look at the offense and say if you guys were even just hitting situationally moving a guy from second getting him in by making it out you would have had more cushion for your Bullpen to screw around but on a day like today I don’t know that it’s the the offense’s uh the offense’s problem also credit to Drew Smiley one in a third uh three strike out you know look it’s it’s it is an expensive tandem that they threw out today and you would like to not be focused on hey Kyle had a good start after a miserable couple months and Drew Smiley is effective in one or two innings of relief while he’s making $10 million but is the roster like if they can contribute at all that is what this team needs versus we’ve seen dead weight that this team has had and is still paying that isn’t even on the team anymore they’re so bad so at yeah at this point you’re just taking like can we be a little effective and contribute to the team winning which Kyle Hendricks and Drew Smiley did today so yeah give them the credit uh we’ll talk a little bit more about that and obviously the offense uh but let’s do the beer bat before you do the ad breaks um I’ll just say I mean we kind of said it uh you know about Kyle henricks and I feel like I just have to give him the beer bat today like this is for him because he’d been so bad this year and now his last two appearances he’s been a lot better and like I said I don’t I’m not saying he’s back I’m not saying that you know he’s reverted back to 2016 Kyle Henrick or anything but if he can be anything like what was last year I think it’d be an added bonus Godfather you’re in the chat and I know you’re being cynical as you always are you want Javier Assad to be the closer my friend well if that’s going to even be a a talking point Kyle Hendrick has to be need to be able to start he’s got to be able to start and he’s got to be a guy that you can feel confident you’re going to put in there every fifth day that way they can potentially put Assad back into the bullpen because his Innings or the fact that he just doesn’t go deep in the game can I offer up a secondary beer bat sure dedication suggestion Keegan Thompson and his wife Tate welcoming he’s on the paternity list welc we’ll give it to him again just because of last night yeah and I didn’t do a beer B last night congrats to them uh you know take your time Keegan but you might be the closer now so hurry back but congrats I I I still love the comments that are in the chat they’re like who’s the closer well we still don’t know guess what it’s you it’s yeah it’s you we’re going to we’re going to pick you up off the street have your bags we talk about you know it’s tough for for hitters we talked about like Alexander Canario last year when he was called up and then was just riding the bench it’s tough you get called upon in a in a tough spot you know they’re not winning a lot of games you’re not you’re not in postseason form with your chugs I think it’s okay thank you for giving me some credit um make excuses for you just like I do for this team so look at us we just the corners create nothing but it’s on the margins Cody it’s uh Cubs are also two and 0 since miles Master bony was recalled just wanted to point that out and thank goodness he’s not seeing the field so okay um let’s do the ads all right well can I and I I just just quickly to to address uh Michael’s comment in the YouTube chat I don’t think anybody wants uh Assad mov to the bullpen that was in response to this is just other folks saying that the the one thing I would say though about Assad is that he’s he’s got to go deeper into games I I I love him starting he’s been unbelievable he’s got a sub3 ER but you do so I’m I’m not I’m not moving him anywhere just to be clear that was a response to a different comment uh but at some point like you got to go deeper into games like you can’t always have four or five inning starts you do have a few guys wisneski Smiley Tyson Miler has done multiple Innings you do have guys stretched out for that but there is a balance there where again he’s going to be at like other guys at a workload that he hasn’t really experienced at some point in this season if he’s starting every game so that’s something you’re going to have to monitor and you got to go deeper in the games at some point like or it’s it’s it’s straining for the bullpen you know related to that it’s just like I’ve been I’ve said you know if he could go deeper in the games great but him and Kyle Hendricks they basically go five innings each you know like when the when the pitching staff gets healthier I just think he could be so much more effective out of the bullpen as a multi- ining guy or late ining guy something he’s shown that he can do that so yeah but there’s no like just to as a a stance for all of us in the chdo Cubs podcast aier side’s been great like there’s nobody nobody’s debating that yeah anyway uh this team mentally drains me all right that’s why I go to therapy guys and I go to therapy with better help all that’s getting God Godfather’s the closer guy he wants a closer he they need a closer yeah that that answer does not have to come from within if I’m using Jed’s words cuz moving Assad out of the bull Merryweather I don’t think we have an exact timeline on that uh but he’s working his way back yeah yeah he’s asking if Merryweather is coming back that’s something I guess we can ask Ryan if there’s been an update on that but um he’ll you join us in like the third segment probably so so if I let him in question from question from Tyler thinking about going imanaga and steel back to back um how nice would it be to go back to back with imanaga and steel don’t think don’t you think we need to get that right as in now I don’t uh I don’t mind the idea and you know I think uh if you were heading into a playoff series I think you’d be very in the middle of that right yeah I think it’s all just about messing with their schedules I mean everybody freaked out when they messed with sha yeah the one time at the rain out so true if if they were able to you know find a way to do that I I certainly don’t have any issue with it you would be very you know if you were going into a weekend series knowing that those guys were starting the first two games or you’re heading to a series in Milwaukee and you know those guys are starting the first two out of three games you’d feel very good about it so I I’m all for it but it’s uh yeah it’s it’s something where it’s all about their schedules the pitchers are so finicky in terms of skipping a guy a day or moving a guy a day it’s all about what DFA uh when so many on Cubs Twitter were yelling about him let me say this like I didn’t know if I should have used Ian hap in this segment or Dans Swanson because not only did both go yard today um but hap also had another had a double in the game and Swanson had the big hit that gave that got them Insurance runs that despite how much the bullpen almost blew it the insurance runs are the reason they won the game you know um so I couldn’t decide between the two but Ian haap I think has been playing better in general of late yes and we’ve talked about it a little bit but he uh he is is locked in as can be right now and I’m he’s like he his way his WRC plus is even above like his career level right now so like that’s how hot he is do I expect it to stay like this the rest of the season no but what I am saying is that this this team needs to capitalize with wins while he’s while he’s playing like this because you know Nico’s been struggling two hits today though all right Swanson he’s starting to get it going it looks like right um you know belly seya I don’t know they’re they’re underperforming but they’re not bad right Morel he I don’t know we know we we we’ve talked about it enough but like you know we need results right and Michael Bush like he’s been awesome Michael Bush rules he [ __ ] rules dude but Ian hap he has been consist consistently one of their best hitters probably since mid delate May I would say dating back to when the Cubs were in Atlanta that is when he started to get it going yeah that Cardinal series too the two bombs and he’s had no cheap home runs either man right that three home close to almost two homers today um the first at bat which was the double that me that that was off the wall in dead center field if if he pulled that to left or right field it’s probably out of there right but yeah he’s hitting the ball hard he’s giving you good bats I know he struck out in what the seventh or eighth inning whatever it was with with guys on base but like when you’re when you’re giving good at bats every single time I can’t expect you to do it every single at bat you know what I mean even the star players don’t do that you know or the Superstar players so yeah I’m just I think ha for me hap is a guy that I think should be hitting lead off right now with his ability to walk and get on base um but I understand with his rum producing right now why he’s hitting fifth so I don’t it’s not the biggest gripe that I have but I’m just I’m I am happy that he’s that he’s getting back to Career levels right now this is what you need from Ian haap Ian haap had a 120 WRC plus right now 118 last year 120 in 2022 his career is right around 115 uh this is where you need him to be and it it took him uh it’s been a very hot stretch to get those numbers back to where you needed him to be and he’s got to stay there like this is the production that the team needs from him Dansby 88 WRC plus still a little bit under League average but again you know he’s a defense first guy and you just need him to be right around League average a little bit above so he’s still got a ways to go but backtack days with a homer both opposite field homers the clutch hit late in the game to drive in those Insurance runs that’s what you need so we we’ve talked about it a lot where you you may not ever get this offense to turn into something where they’re a juggernaut or just you know blowing teams out as we we like to use the famous quote from Jed Hoyer but during the the stretch a lot of us said they’re better than this and what we meant by that was even if these guys just play to where they have been for their careers which in a lot of cases is not just a one or twoyear sample this is years of guys performing at a pretty similar level on offense this team would be better and they would stop losing so many one-run games even if they were just scoring one or two more runs in some of those games you steal some of those games and the record would look a lot better and wouldn’t be talking about how frequently they’re blowing saves cuz maybe they’re not playing a one-run game every night and so we need to see more from Dansby we need him to continue this we need him have to stay at this level uh but it’s it’s very nice to see that these guys have kind of Maybe started to Ian hap definitely has but maybe Dansby kind of coming alive a little bit I mean Ian Hap’s been as hot as can be he’s got a like a400 Ops in his last seven games last uh 15 games last couple weeks his Ops is almost at a th000 it’s like 996 so he’s been red hot like this is what you need from me and ha he’s uh last several games here like really kind of put the offense on his back a little bit and hopefully we continue to see Dansby kind of keep going in this direction this is a nice little weather’s heating up I know it’s like an old ad it’s a cliche but let’s just uh do that and and yeah 85 decel monks in the YouTube chat says the players just hit like the the back of their baseball card I don’t know if they win the division they’ve done quite a hole for themselves with the Brewers but they’re a better team than we saw during this last like Dreadful stretch of baseball they’re at like eight and a half back in the division right now I don’t know if Milwaukee play well I assume Milwaukee plays today they probably play tonight because they’re in Anaheim if you know realistically if you if they can cut that in half by the All-Star break somehow some way then I think that they have a chance but if they’re like big yeah it’s a big hole and they dug it themselves and that’s why we’ve yelled and screamed and and did a lot of lot did did a lot more yelling after that you know because his team is better than being eight and a half back and last in in the NL Central so well and and just because we were talking about it like we we talked about it during the watch along but like Michael Bush I mean he’s been one of the most valuable first baseman in baseball we were looking at that tweet from Matt clap what was he sixth yeah sixth in baseball if you’re looking at wins above replacement for a first baseman 134 WRC plus uh an Ops over 820 if I’m doing that math right which I’m probably not Brendan usually yells at me for that I’m pretty sure I have that right 824 Ops like he looks really good and you know it was one of those things we knew when the Cubs made the trade they were going to give him an opportunity a guy that didn’t get a chance when he was on the Dodgers and it was a risk it was a calculated risk let’s see what this guy can do he’s been a very nice offensive producer for this team um he’s looked like everything that that that people said like everyone projected to be like Max Mony and that like he’s he’s played first base he’s DH he’s even played some second the thing I like he hit the ball hard and he hits the ball out of the park he leads all rookies and homers and he walks I mean the and he’s a left-handed bat what is what is what else does Max mty do that like he hasn’t done outside I I know mty can play some they both strike out a lot and they both out a lot you that’s the only thing with bush I mean he’s got like a 33% K rate it’s pretty high uh evil wax in the chat I think you mentioned on the walk watch along uh most homers of any rookie Michael Bush does so you know you’d like to see that K rate come down but when the overall offensive line Looks like that uh his babip is quite high it’s at 370 so you’d expect that you got to cut down the K rate at some point there’s a reason you don’t want to have a 30 plus K rate uh but overall numbers are really good and you know this is a guy who’s getting his first sustained run at the big league level really getting a chance to make those adjustments and so uh hopefully he continues to get better because the early return is really nice and he can cut down on that K rate a little bit maybe be a little more selective at the pitches he’s swinging at like really round out into a a very complete offensive player that war was what like 1.7 and I think like the projections coming into the year were like you know maybe like a two two and a half War player tops yeah 1.6 already yeah so yeah I mean he’s completely outperformed what anyone expected and I know he struggled at points too but you know like he’s a rookie he’s going to go through those those struggles um as the league adjusts with him so he just really doesn’t make many mistakes he doesn’t make any Mist he very fundamentally sound baseball player like defensively offensively the some of the at bats have been a little questionable but like his defense at the beginning of the year like in April I feel like you know you could tell he was going regular position right yeah it’s one of those experiments like we when we talk about experiments he’s been an experiment that’s worked out like you can afford to get away with doing one or two experiments at you know throughout a season but the Cubs are doing like three of three or four of them anyway um he’s an above average League defender too like I he doesn’t make a lot of mistakes out there I think that that people want to look at the flashy stats and the power and stuff and maybe that comes later on but for a developmental year yeah you can’t ask for anything more right um before we do the ads I did want to mention Swanson getting that hit in what the eighth inning was it the eighth inning when they did that or was it seventh inning I think it was the seventh inning when they like after H after hap struck out all right Swanson getting that hit it’s one of those things that I feel like this team has just missed over over this this tough stretch clutch hits not only just the clutch hits but like we all sat here and when hap struck out we all sat here and felt like they’re not going to score and the reason being is because for the large portion of the last month and a half they you are correct they have not scored so when with Swanson getting that hit with two outs in a big moment of the game to get insurance runs it’s it’s one of those things that like like they just not only do they need to do more of that but it’s also like it’s like thank you like I don’t I feel like I don’t I can’t put into words what I’m what I want to say here but it’s just like one of those things they need more of that they need to pick their teammates up yeah I think that’s what I tweeted from our from my account or maybe CH Cubs like I can’t yell at hap about striking out in that moment because he hit a home run and had a double in the game and has been one of the best hitters on the team since miday and because he didn’t get a hit in that moment I should shouldn’t be mad at him Swanson has underperformed he has not been very good for the large part point of the season but the last two days he’s been pretty good home run yesterday home run today and gets the big hit when you absolutely needed it to get some insurance runs like they need more of that they need more guys picking guys up when guys don’t get the job done like that it’s easier it’s easier to say than it to actually be done but in in the simplest way possible they they need some of that because guys can’t be perfect every time at the play if they’re hitting well you know well and it’s it’s one of those things we we’ve talked about it so much you know it feels like it’s beating a dead horse a little bit but it’s it’s the state of the team you’re always playing close games even this game when Dansby got the hit we didn’t think it was going to be a close game we didn’t think it was going to be another one-run game as we talked about but when you lead the league in one-run games those moments th those are those marginal things adding on runs getting those big two out hits and today they didn’t do enough of you know you left eight guys on base you were three for 15 with runners in scoring position but there are so many games where it would just be just one one big hit we saw it in Tampa when Cody Bellinger hit that uh go-ahead home run to win that one game that’s the type of stuff you’d love to play games where your pitching staff shuts the other team out you put up eight runs and it’s an easy win that’s not what this team is doing every day brother like they’re not doing that and so it comes down to you need those big hits you need those clutch Two Out game tying game-winning homers you can’t rely on it all the time you don’t want to rely on it all the time but it just felt like this team was on the opposite end of all of those hits or all of those you know kind of pitchers stranding base runners and stuff you just need to steal some of those moments and that was one today for Dansby like you said picking up Ian hat not bringing in those Runners not capitalizing and increasing the lead so many times we’ve looked back at these games that they’ve lost by a run or two runs and said well they had that fourth inning that fifth inning they should have got that guy in they should have scored more when they had The Bases Loaded in no outs and like almost did that again today but that’s the thing like you just keep adding on maybe you avoid it for one day and today they did yeah all right we got to do some ads Ryan’s gonna join us at some point in the next a good day one for three yeah yeah did they not give him a hit for the bun fielders Choice probably fielder’s Choice okay I think well he actually did hit one to left field today and then he bunted which made the defense do some stuff and they the Giants had an air I guess two for five good to see yeah even though he’s playing with a buter hand and then PCA also stole that base after he bunted too so easily could have had three hits smoked that ball into a double play yeah he’s getting the ball off the ground that’s the that’s the best line drives are where niik horer lives that’s what we that like I don’t know man all I know is that I feel better about ke and Topson out there than I do Colton Brewer at the same time though they should it it was six to one it should have never been six to five man and when if you’re Mark lider Jr and we have given him so much credit and honestly we are the reason that you can argue that we are the reason that Mark lier Jr is even what he is we were the first people who ever said that this guy could be something in the bullpen Cory you like to bring that up correct all right I don’t know if it’s using him too much I don’t know if it’s like is it simply just because when the splitter ain’t going he’s useless that’s what it is like when he doesn’t have that pitch you have to face three it’s a three batter minimum he’s got to face three batters anyway but like dude like when you’re up six to one man if you don’t have the splitter guard you telling me none of the other pitches are good enough either to throw strikes his splitter complement his other pitch repertoire so well when he doesn’t have it that’s it’s bad news I know and I’m just I’m it’s my big frustration with with today in general is just the fact that you led six to1 it should have been an easy win it you you did if he if he’s able to pitch then you don’t even have to pitch Tyson Miller who at some point will be at this rate he will be over used as well yeah you know like it’s a reg it’s a domino effect in the bullpen with the Chicago Cubs man they they desperately need some of these guys to come off the injured list but in the meantime some of these guys just got to perform and I understand that we can blame Jed for not you know whether it was signing a closer which again I don’t care I’m I’m glad they didn’t give Josh hater $95 million based off how they act anyway but you know whe because you didn’t trade for him you could have traded for Tanner Scott you know you still could perhaps but is who knows how much of the the package is going to be more compared to at the be at the you know before the season right so you have that problem but then like even in the middle Innings today today it’s the middle Innings and I I feel like the middle inning relief for this team has actually been pretty solid but like with where the bullpen is right now you just you need guys to just do their job man yeah I we talked about it on the watchong I did I like the aggressiveness from Council in kind of looking at things you have an off day tomorrow you need to win a series at home and just lock down a series W I didn’t mind going to lighter in a 61 game the issue though is he’s just he’s used a ton and you saw it last year down the stretch and you’ve seen it at times this year like it’s kind of easy to tell when the effectiveness is off when the splitter is not there he not able to command it it’s not generating those swings that you want so then the other stuff that you know the fast ball doesn’t play as well it all doesn’t work and that’s what happens when you overuse a guy and I like going to Tyson Miller too they’ve been your best guys and they got to get the job done now Tyson Miller was put in a bad spot but he also gave up one of the hardest hit balls I can remember or Solair so it is what it is guys have to perform at the same time though like Mark ligher Jr for as good as he has been should not be your best reliever yeah that’s also part of it like Tyson Miller’s been great since coming over these should not be Craig council’s best options now Merryweather should be one of them he’s out obviously aliz complete ineffectiveness and injury not things you were hoping for but when we’re sitting here talking about oh your uh your your best reliever couldn’t get it done it’s like well you probably don’t want Mark Michael Mark lier Jr has been great but he shouldn’t be your best reliever like he’s not that good yeah and the other and as we said the other problem is he’s definitely not as good when you have to run him into the ground like it’s only June and we’re talking about the same thing we talked about down the stretch last year like you need help for these guys but you’re right like guys also have to get the job done so this was a day where we’ve argued so much like how could Craig Council put nerys in the other night how could he use this guy how could he use this guy he didn’t use nerys last night gave Keegan Thompson a shot it worked today up 6 to1 not even taking that moment to say you know what let’s go with some of these other guys let’s just see if guys can come in and get out I’m going to go to our best relievers and that still ends up with them in a one-run game it it it’s not to say that every move council’s made has been perfect but I think today was as good an example as you’re going to get of he tried his best guys and we still end up in a one-run game where he’s having to pull multiple guys and see if somebody can possibly just get three outs to win the game it’s a yeah yeah and it’s going to keep being like this like until guys get healthy or guys really step up and like get comfortable in these roles it’s going to be like this you’re just going to be piecing games together praying that guys can get out I I I don’t know any other way to uh to look at it right I I I know Ryan just called in so we’re going to go to him here after we do these ads but of close couple shakier outings but then Tyson Miller basically since he got to the Cubs has been he’s been great um so it at that point it was like yeah I think it was like you you built up a little bit of a lead but like you know lock it down get just just get a win get a comfortable win you got a day off tomorrow and then um you know that that gives guys an extra day of rest as far as Colton Brewer in the ninth you know like they’re basically like not that again not that Hector nearest is out of the closer spot or the you know getting the bulk of the safe situations um I he obviously did pitch a couple days ago um I think one thing Craig council did say about Colton Brewer is like that we does have I think that was his first save of his career um but that you do he does have a lot of experiences separate experiences maybe not a ton in that specific leverage spot but like I he he does have experiences pitching at this level and that um you know Council trusted him to go out there and get the job done and yeah I mean you know you guys were talking about it a lot sitting in in the back room but it’s like it’s an it’s an an imperfect Bullpen like we know that we’ve known that since the season started um and that’s why we’ve kind of harped on the the offense and and putting trying to put more runs on the board because when you don’t you don’t do that and you have an imperfect Bullpen like you can’t always rely on that Bullpen to go and get the job done so like fortunately the offense went up and put six runs probably should have put up more uh but managed to put up six runs and and even though it became a sweat at the end there was enough room to sit there and pull out the win you know to keep the lead and then pull out the win in the end like that’s um you know so yeah I mean the bullpen isn’t perfect it’s it’s they don’t have basic they really don’t have super reliable options at any any role right now they’re still obviously they’re still trying to figure that out because they are kind of moving guys around shifting guys using guys in different situations and I think that’s not something that’ll be figured out today tomorrow anytime in the near future it’s just when when you have an imperfect Bullpen you’re you’re G to have to keep kind of grinding things out and getting guys just basically getting guys like on the mound when they’re when they’re basically getting guys on the mound when they’re kind of hot and pitching well kind of bul of bit I was just kind of curious to like why Brewer was the guy considering yesterday you told us they went to Thompson because righties had like an Ops I can’t remember the the number but like a really low Ops um righties did against Thompson so like I just you know I I didn’t know if maybe there was some sort of explanation behind it but we all know what you just said like it’s it it we’ll we’ll probably be saying it again on Sunday well I I mean I I know council did say part of it was need based based on the last couple of days and usage and stuff um and that just the fact that they’re going to need everyone down there right like you can’t hide from guys you can’t not use guys like you’re gonna need he’s going to need everyone to be able to pitch in in different spots the way that the bullpen is constructed right now and I think that’s just part of it well so Ryan I want to ask you about uh Kyle Hendricks I don’t know if yall talk to Kyle or just Craig but uh was looking at your Tweet obviously we know this was a great start from Kyle Hendricks but uh in terms of strikeouts whiff rate I mean these are things numbers we hadn’t seen from Kyle in years in some cases just curious what the conversation was there I’m I’m sure everybody in the Clubhouse is very happy for Kyle given how the season started uh but just you know curious what you heard from those guys on a big start from the professor today yeah so when you bring up like the the numbers that I tweeted out what was it it was the most strikeouts in like three years um and a single game in like three years most whiffs in basically two years highest whiff rate in two years like all that stuff um one thing that Kyle actually pointed to that like he gave a lot of credit to Miguel Amaya and the way he called games back there and and and and part of it like one thing he said was that Amaya was kind of making things like like doing things a little out of the ordinary as far as game calling like calling more curveballs or mixing things up like stuff that was a little bit unpredictable to Kyle and Kyle credited that as like if it’s unpredictable to me that should mean it’s unpredictable to the hitters and I think one thing that Kyle talked about was being too predictable early in the season when the struggles were there um so that’s you know that that’s something that he credited as far as why the outing was good today he gave a lot of credit to Miguel Maya calling games back there and I know you know the the running game has been an issue with him there’s been different stuff defensively that we’ve seen areas of clearly need Improvement um but the game calling is something that we constantly hear him get praised for from these from starting pitchers and then relievers obviously coming in that’s something we keep hearing about so I think uh that was a big thing to but just overall you know Kyle going through you know was it a month ago almost uh getting sent to the bullpen um you know pitching behind young guys in Ben Brown and Jordan Wicks who obviously uh you know went on the iil recently and Kyle has to step in and and one thing that he said is like he doesn’t feel like he’s earned it back right I don’t think anyone would say he did like he doesn’t he’s had a a few good outings recently especially this month um but he he doesn’t feel like he’s earned it back and that’s something he’s still like moving forward he still he knows he still needs to do um he doesn’t love that he got the start because Ben Brown and Jordan Wicks went down he’s looking forward to having those guys back and then you know obviously pitching whatever role they need uh but he’s looking forward to like also just continuing to go out there helping the team win continuing to earn this spot back if that’s what it is um and yeah you said it like it was just a big massive performance for him today got you got a standing ovation from the crowd I think earlier in the year I’m curious Ryan I I know you you talked about any and and maybe there’s there’s not a a further answer but uh other than you know maybe Miguel Amaya’s game calling and stuff like that but I’m curious I I I remember when Kyle was struggling earlier you know after some of those starts he was saying I I felt like I only made a b a couple bad pitches like I feel like my stuff is pretty good I I feel pretty good um did did he point to anything that we saw more success today generating more whiffs really only as he got further along in that game did we even start to see some harder contact from the Giants it was a pretty vintage start from Kyle Hendricks anything from him like he he kind of felt like he was close to that even when the results weren’t good I’m curious if anything today kind of clicked in for him or if if the only thing is maybe just uh we’re going to have to give more credit to Miguel Amaya’s game calling well I think that’s what it was is is that because I mean I asked him like what you got the the strikeouts the whiffs like what was working today and he again he like right away gave the credit to to mgala Maya as far as like I think that when he talks about it being more unpredictable I think I I think part of it when the struggles were coming even when he felt like he was only making a few bad pitches when you’re too predictable and and and and hitters know where the where the pitches are going to be or or can expect the pitches even if you are making a good pitch they may just have a little bit of a leg up on being able to to connect with one today when when he talks about Amaya just mixing things up in a little bit of more of an unpredictable way I do I think that’s just the thing I think I think that’s it is just he he mixed it up in a way that the hitters couldn’t just didn’t know what to expect uh in any situation or or right there you know whenever he’s throwing them a pitch I think that’s that’s a big part of it real quick Ryan to that note cuz Kyle when he struggled last year gave that credit to Jan gome a lot too and those two had a really close relationship so kind of two questions here one did he talk about goms at all did anybody talk about goms at all today in that decision and yeah I mean do we have to look at Miguel Amaya as this is a part of his development because I’ve been pretty critical of it and I know a lot of other people have in a lot of ways his defensive metrics have not been great but is this a developmental thing that he is succeeding it so two separate questions there by developmental thing what do you mean like his game calling yeah is this is this something we can look at as a net positive so far because everything else has been a net negative yeah yeah the game calling and that’s something that you don’t like measure right you can’t really like measure that on the stats but that’s something that like I said it’s like you constantly hear the starting pictures of whoever’s talking about the Maya like the game calling game planning like that he’s very on top of things like that um and so like no if nothing else fails or if everything else fails like that’s something that they hang their hat on as far as like they they like working with migala Maya to when when it comes to game planning and calling a game because they do think he he is having success in that spot there’s other stuff like I said very clear um you know areas of improvement but uh that’s that’s yeah that’s definitely something that as far as development goes and learning catching at the big league level and learning catching uh big league pitchers like that’s a positive for for him on the catching front is being able to do that um and to your other question um for Yan like they a lot of guys obviously acknowledge that he’s a big a big time teammate a big time leader in that Clubhouse and there is definitely a little bit of a void without his voice in there uh but at the end the day like what they said was that they just needed to make an attempt to get more production out of the catching spot and I think that’s on both sides of the ball you know the whole whole package and that’s what Tomas Neato hopefully could be for him um you know provide a little bit more offense hopefully and and be able to lock things down defensively uh I think there’s obviously still going to be like that transition where they uh are working him Neato into the working him into you know working with pitchers and and understanding how these pitchers tick and how they like games called and all that stuff um there still going to be that little bit of a transition there but I think they are this move is basically down to the bone this move was to just try to find more production in the catcher spot which has been a hole for this team basically the entire year and you know Jan goes was the guy that uh he just wasn’t getting it done at the spot and they they felt like they needed to make the move um all right well you missed out on all the pork with the grill and with Dad Ryan are you upet about it yeah no Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson hit back-to-back homers to get the offense going and Kyle Hendricks pitched five no-hit innings in what was his best outing of the year and the Cubs bullpen managed to not completely fall apart.
