quot today minimize the hot air welcome to the wind wheel podcast here to talk to you about all things Detroit Red Wings hockey the world of the NHL and lots more I’m one of your hosts Ryan Hannah now yeah you’re you’re permitted okay I’m Brad Chrisco and I’m Evan on this episode of the wind wheel podcast we’re gonna be talking to you about Detroit’s recent signing and then we’re going to kind of be blending in the NHL news and the Red Wings news as the floodgates opened as I mentioned a ton happened in the world of the NHL in terms of Trades a one big trade and then another one that just blew it out of the water some news in terms of who Detroit might go after via trade who they might not go after via free agency and more we’re going to get into today’s Prospect profile which I think this is our last like normal style episode before the draft because we have our draft rankings and really our mock draft I should say and then our full Draft preview so those will be coming over the next two episodes but today’s profile is Trevor Connelly which is going to be a contentious one but a very interesting one and then we’ll get into NHL news where unfortunately it took exactly one day for Brad to be proven exactly right which is annoying but we’re going to talk about the Stanley Cup Final as well as the heroni deal and more before all that I want to let you know that the winged wheel podcast is primarily supported by our patreon supporters patreon.com wheel podcast if you want to join the dubdub club and support the show you get access to some really great benefits like the patreon exclusive bonus overtime episodes which record right after these main ones they are a good time we let lose have fun answer hockey questions non- hockey questions mess around I showed these guys some funny memorabilia from my youth which maybe one day we’ll air on on the main show maybe we should do a fundraising goal for that you also get access to our patreon exclusive Discord additionally you’re automatically entered into all of our giveaways for example we have given away two tickets to every Detroit Red Wings home game for the past two seasons the vast majority going directly to our patreon supporters so again patreon.com wied wheel podcast Albert Johansson the most consequential NHL move of the day Bar None Albert Johansson was extended by the Detroit Red Wings a one-year deal a two-way contract $775,000 is the estimated cap HP according to cat friendley who I guess weren’t really busy advising the Washington Capitals today but onee two-way deal and very quickly to to reiterate it is a common misconception that oneway versus two-way has anything to do with waiver eligibility it doesn’t affect it at all a two-way contract just means the player makes a different amount of money per day if they are in the NHL versus if they’re in the AHL so it’s just a a moneys savings thing but a one-year contract for Johanson who because he is no longer waiver exempt next season should factor into the Red Wings lineup provided he takes the spot thoughts on Johanson one year makes sense for him because if he does earn a spot as a full-time NHL this year obviously that would add a few more dollars to his next contract the two-way part of this almost doesn’t matter because if the Red Wings get to a point of he does not earn his spot and they can’t justify keeping him up anymore they’re going to lose him on waivers so his ah salary almost doesn’t matter because the Red Wings will not be paying it and if they do put him on waivers and he does clear and go down to Grand Rapids well then something far worse likely happened where it’s the least of anybody’s worries involved so I like it it makes sense it’s probably what everybody should have expected and hopefully the AHL side of that 2-way never matters yeah it wasn’t I was definitely surprised to see that news come across today of all the signing that need to happen that maybe that’s just the warm-up you know that’s the Amo Bo trying to get everybody going cuz we are kind of bracing for some other things happening in the red wi space it’s just a lot of its noise and murmur is not much that’s reportable yet but wheels are in motion right so I think this deal makes a lot of sense for everyone right like why would Albert Johanson want a long-term contract I’m sure he would imagine he could up his aav if he makes the Red Wings and you know plays some impactful role on the team next season so a one-year you know quote unquote Pro it deal makes a lot of sense for him to talk about the player for a second here because the contractor like you guys said it’s basic there’s only so much to be made out of that but the player himself like Albert Johansson if you go back to our conversation with Carter Maser and if you go back to you know a lot of Griffin’s players will tell you a lot of nights he wasn’t just you know the best defenseman on the ice for them or you know the most improved player this season or whatever it is a lot of players will tell you that he was the best Grand Rapids Griffin last season period so he has all the confidence in the world like you said Evan to to take a one-year deal and earn himself a little bit more money on his next contract but also he could unlock a lot of things for the Detroit Red Wings in terms of how their Decor will change and morph over the next couple of Seasons Brad we were talking hypothetical trade scenarios before we started recording and if you think about you know who might be moved out Justin Hall is obviously the one being shopped because he’s that contract is the the toughest on the cap and he’s probably easier to shop than a guy who has like a fulln move like Petri who only has one year left anyways and and probably has more utility on that third pair right d slot but then you get into guys like okay what about shro do the Red Wings really want to be moving shro considering how sparse they are in terms of effective nhlers because in the right position in the right deployment you’ve seen shro be to some degree a plus player or at the very least the least of their concerns wallman’s another player who’s talked about a lot do you but do you really want to be moving wman like that is your first pair left D when he’s healthy and playing and is he like a top of the league first pair Lefty no that’s not the ideal situation but that’s still all you have Edinson is going to come in and in all likelihood have himself a great season we’ve seen that if Johansson comes in and now has himself a great season in a sense to that you know four five defenseman that can open a lot of doors for Detroit to be a little bit more aggressive in moving players or shipping out contracts or or changing the roster more quickly so maybe an overmat duration of the player in the miners but could prove to be useful for the Red Wings upcoming here yeah he’s going to be fascinating for all the reasons you laid out when you look at the left side of the Red Wings D for who’s under contract for this year Walman Edinson Johansson sherro ma something’s going to have to give now that something could just be someone going to the right side and playing their off off side but also Al Johansson himself is not your prototypical we’ll call it likely NHL defenseman because he’s not that big he’s not that fast has a good shot but not a cannon the skill is good but it’s not great so you have a guy who when you look at his tools across the board is you know average to above average in some instances but definitely nowhere near Elite in any of them and defensemen like that do not succeed in the NHL unless they are one of the smartest players on the ice and from all accounts at least according to the guys in Grand Rapids he is so I’m fascinated to see how that translate to the NHL I think the transition initially is going to be rough just because of the pace of everything and his again lack of truly Dynamic tools but you don’t have to look far to see a player on the team oi ma who’s at least carved out a successful NHL career if in a bottom role but he fits that mold as well and I think johanson’s upside is higher than ma not that a you know we’ve talked about how often prospects reach their ceiling but the possibility is there and I I like that you said like the traits may not be elite but they’re still like average to above average I think some are even more than above average I think he actually moves a little bit better than some people give him credit for but really yeah it’s it’s the way he interprets the game knows when to jump up thinking the game as well as he does that’s what has really allowed him to mature and the fact that he was able to shine in the AHL with that already a lot of the guys with the kind of frame and tools that you describe Brad you’re like yeah it it’s hard for them to really make it in the NHL a lot of them fizzle out even before the point that Johansson reached in the AHL so it’s all good indicators so far in my mind for his play well that’s Johansson there’s nothing else that really happened in the unit today so we’ll move on from there let’s we’re GNA we’re going to talk about a few things here let’s talk about San Jose with Barkley goodro first which was an interesting one so the the New York Rangers moved on from Barkley goodro which had mixed opinions and I’m not even kidding when I say mixed opinions because yes he had a bad contract Barkley goodro had a a bad contract but he was also a playoff performer the kind of player that they brought in for the specific reason of the the postseason but still you know people were surprised that New York decided to make that change this means that Drury is all in on changing the the formula in New York he doesn’t want to run it back with the same thing in and of itself good move fine you’re going to cut your losses Barkley goodro has three years left on a six-year contract that was signed at 3 .6 just under 3.65 million per year modified no trade clause so three seasons left at 3, 64166 that is not nothing like we talk about the Justin Hall Contract it’s like the forward equivalent of that Barkley goodro does have utility in the playoffs I think he he brings that kind of leadership and he brings the kind of Effectiveness and the kind of game that helps you win in the playoffs but by and large he can be a BL in the regular season and he’s not a plus player over 82 games it’s a bad contract the San Jose Sharks picked him up on waivers it’s been reported that they may have been on his no modified no trade list which explains why they would have to pick him up on waivers rather than take something from New York to acquire him because it’s a bad contract but they still picked him up on waivers the context here being that you know he started his career in San Jose but if he didn’t want to come there you’re picking him up or if he didn’t have sano’s no trade list why are you taking him for free all right I’ll start with the the points where I can give Mike career the benefit of the doubt at least a little bit San Jose’s bad I know barklay goodro is bad but San Jose is oh my God bad and he is an upgrade on probably every Ford in their bottom six San Jose is like Detroit at their worst Chicago at their worst recently bad yes they are a atrocious so even the shell of Barkley Goodrow is an upgrade on probably half of their forwards and then there’s something to be said about the intangibles a guy who’s been there done that been around the league can help Mentor the young guys San Jose didn’t have a lot of that either okay I understand the appeal of why San Jose would want a guy like that but you took him at full cost and I understand s Jose is probably not going to be in a competitive window in the next 3 years so the cap hit really doesn’t matter to them fine okay but he didn’t want to go that’s why you were on his no trade list reportedly so now you’re bringing him in probably disgruntled and pissed off and even if he was your guy let’s not forget guys like barklay goodro as we’ve learned over the years and I’ll die on this hill or a diamond dozen you can find a hundred of them in free agency every year and you don’t need to pay $3 million in a million years to do it okay like full stop we’ve seen it as Red Wings fan we’ve seen this exact experiment time and time again to varying degrees they’re a diamond dozen even if San Jose zeroed Ino but we want this one and if we’re on his no trade list what are our other options we can only get them on waivers well your other option is you don’t you go find another one of them they don’t have a no guy in that room no it’s wait I’m qualified yeah yeah it was it the running joke for years and years and years some teams just need to pay a guy $1 million behind to stand behind their jam and go don’t do that five times a year and they’d be worth the contract isn’t that what the cap friendly guys are for in Washington yeah well hey that doesn’t K until July 5th apparently something you’re ruining your segue save that sorry yeah thank you contentar Evan yes it’s right so even with giving San Jose every benefit of the doubt here it’s still insanely stupid I just don’t get it so I’m going to put a pin in the San Jose one we’re going to come back to it because I think it’s relevant after we talk about our next point which is the trade that happened between the New Jersey Devils and the Calgary Flames which was in the works for how many months now it just made the most sense in terms of who needed a goalie and who is willing to give up Futures to do it markstrom to the New Jersey Devils at 31 . 3% retain so he went in at a cap hit of 4.125 million to the devils and the flames in return acquired Kevin ball and a 2025 first round pick so not this season’s a 2025 first round pick that’s top 10 projected marrom has two more years left on his contract so he’ll come in at the reduced cap hit from instead of 6 million to 4.125 all in all New Jersey finally gets a goie who they probably should have traded for in January and they might have actually made the playoffs and Washington wouldn’t have even made it and Calgary gets something not a ton not as much as he might think for a goalie who’s been as effective as markstrom has been he’s had his ups and downs but if you look at you know goal saved above expected and and all those metrics over the past however many seasons he’s been one of the better if not one of the top goalies in the NHL initial thoughts on that deal so it’s very easy to forget how good Jake Allen was after the deadline so you take it back cuz the New Jersey Devils the playoffs of their own valtion that’s right my bad yeah I’m just trying to defend my preseason pick but yeah go on and then my next thought was man Jacob markstrom and Jake Allen as a gending tandem for under what $8 million is insanely good like love that for New Jersey and again initial reaction is oh my God Calgary got fleeced but but but the number one thing that I saw getting completely ignored after this trade is Jacob markstrom had a no move plus he controlled where he was going he could tell Calgary whatever for all we know New Jersey was the only one he was willing to wait for or some of the other ones he was willing to wait for were not interested at all you mean the Tampa Bay Lightning didn’t want Jacob markstrom we as R Wings fans went through this in the Alex to Brink a trade we got him for a very good deal because he had Ottawa over a barrel it sounds like that was the same thing here so markstrom going to where he wants Calgary still getting at least a first round pick and a usable Prospect out of it is okay obviously as a Flames fan it’s hard to like this trade you could argue yeah maybe they hold on to him to the deadline till next summer and maybe force his hand to open up his no trade list to I don’t know maybe a couple other teams and then they can start bidding against each other so I understand the criticism but they were in a tough spot so getting a first round pick back is at least understandable so between the marrom trade and between you know what we seen San Jose do lately and San Jose is not the only team but just because they made this pickup I think this affects two different areas for the Red Wings because we’re the center of our hockey universe and obviously we’re going to bring this back into it’s very much like the you know how does this affect the New England Patriots mean that went around football for a while how does this affect the Detroit Red Wings markstrom if that’s a return from Mar the goalie Market is way more suppressed than we thought and that is a very good goalie off the board for the Red Wings if you’re of the mind that they should be trading for one some folks are are happy to go in with whoo in line to see and that’s fair but if you’re in the market to trade for a goalie which Steve Eisman is he’s shopping we know that for a fact that brings the price down and then on the San Jose side if you have GMS making moves like picking up Barkley goodro and his contract on waivers for nothing nothing you there are so many opportunities to offload bad contracts that’s two of the key target areas that the Red Wings want to hit this off season so this is all good news really this is good news for the bad GMS when you’re dealing with the bad GMS everything around the bad GMS because again I’ve made my argument over the past few months that the Red Wings ideal goal tending Target right now relative to how good they are contract experience y y y should be John Gibson I understand he’s not the best goalie on the market but given acquisition cost and everything he’d be the target would trading for John Gibson and Jacob Mark be one to one no because that no move Clause looms large it might set an unrealistic expectation of the market now if you can convince Pat verbi that that’s the market fantastic verbi from accounts is a nightmare negotiator and so is Steve Eiserman so you could see that one being a complicated process Gibson also has a modified no trade for what it’s worth yes and although I think he’d wave it for every team to get the hell out of an yeah he’s pretty much indicated he wants to go yeah and barklay goodro it’s probably worth mentioning it seems like San Jose really locked in on him specifically so that doesn’t mean the acquisition cost for a Justin hole is going to go down for Detroit to unload him it’s possible this does help them as it sets Market precedence which is what Steve isman will absolutely use as his negotiating tactic but I have to think most NHL Gams will go yes but these are their own individual circumstances that are not replicated in these situations so we can’t go off of that wow Mitch mner has a no move Clause as well let’s let’s apply that logic to that scenario oh apparently the the latest thinking is that they want to extend Mitch Mar they prefer to extend him run it back baby let’s go everything is being negotiated through the media right now like that’s all this is so we have no choice other than to declare it you know hogwash or or take it at face value but it is fun to take it at face value because Toronto trying to change everything but just ending up constantly running it back is the funniest possible outcome I love it we we talked about Gibson in previous episodes you made a mention there Brad of you know he’s probably not the best option available I used to and a part of me still believes this think that he’s he has a chance to get back to the galie he used to be but I’ve become more and more convinced the more people I talk to who are you know very much more attuned to how Gales progress over their careers and what’s wrong with them when they’re bad kind of thing that you’re taking a a shell or somewhat of a shell of John Gibson so it’s a risk it’s definitely a risk but I do think that they’re that lower acquisition cost could be there because his contract is something you have to consider as well I also have some inkling that Gibson is one of eisman’s targets which isn’t exactly a revelation like you you don’t really have to even hear anything to think that you just have to do some math the two GMS knowing each other could also help because again verbi is familiar with the Red Wings players and it stands for reason that a guy who did a lot of their Pro scouting which was verbi well like some of the players that he brought in for the Red Wings so you never know who we might like and and might still see value in that Detroit wouldn’t have to pay as much to offload or or they could sell for higher than they would otherwise so I I think there’s a deal to be made there with Gibson if you’re the the kind of person who’s in on him I think that’s exciting if you’re iffy on it then I think it could still be an opportunity to you know offload bad contracts if you want to get absolutely wacky throw Trevor zis in there and and you know make it some Mega trade I I think that’s getting too outlandish but there’s opportunity there and I think it’s more than just opportunity to sense I think that’s where ean’s eyes are right now not only there we have also you know seen some Reports online that lonus alark for example is potentially a Target but I think Gibson is a a strong possibility if it does happen yeah so without getting back into my deep dive on John Gibson that I did a month or two ago I couple points to reiterate as to why I think this is the ideal goalie scenario that’s available he won’t cost you an acquisition like a Soros SLL like markstrom obviously did he’s a high floor goalie you know what he is at his worst which is still better than what the wings were getting out of Rhymer huso and lion at their valleys he’s going to be consistent and again the Red Wings have tried a bunch of these like career Jour goalie and they haven’t worked they’re ofer Jonathan Bernier was the best of the bunch lion had his moments this year and at points extended moments but we saw a couple times in the season he turned into a pumpkin at midnight including in the biggest games down the stretch you can get Gibson cheap in acquisition cost he his contract is the perfect bridge to roughly when we think kosa will be ready because he’s been a very high-end very elite goalie in the NHL for parts of his career for a good chunk of his career he’d be a perfect mentor to someone like kosa or Augustine I just think yeah everybody’s whenever I bring this up I get mentioned Soros is better I know but you’re going to have to pay like a top prospect and a first round pick to get him the Red Wings are not in a position they should be doing that they should be figuring out how do we get kosa to be a goalie of the caliber of UC Saros not let’s just go get that guy right now now if koser Augustine doesn’t pan out in three years yeah then you’re going in overpaying to trade for a guy like that I understand that but again you have to factor in Where the Red Wings are in their timeline acquisition cost contract length mentorship High floor it all makes sense for Detroit does it say something about our opinions when we say something a little bit out there and it starts thundering heavily outside it’s like the hockey gods are saying no you idiots or you’re exactly right it’s one of the two but the real to me like talking about you know the Craig Conroy and and Mike rear like it’s out there to offload contracts the the goalie conversation that you can there’s there’s a few schools of thought and who’s to say what’s worth the risk Gibson could be a risk that fails and that actually might be the most likely scenario but I think everyone can agree Detroit does need to offload at least some kind of bad salary cap usage right now Justin Halls the face of that but it’s not the only one and you can get creative with it so those opportunities are out there so I think that’s exciting for Red Wings fans to potentially look forward to there’s you know there’s still things to come cider and Raymond’s contracts there’s we’ll see what happens with Patrick Kane a lot of that has to be decided pretty soon but not by rule but just because you want to figure those things out before you get into the rest of free agency so I think you’re going to start to see some movement if it happens hopefully soonish kill two birds one stone hypothetical For You Justin Hull and a second round pick for John Gibson I would do that every day of the week I don’t think Anaheim does Okay so throw Barren good that’s one of those ones where I really need to be on the inside of that the room with how they actually feel about bearr okay so here’s the thing though what do you think the objective cost to just unload Justin Hall is uh first or second round pick based I was lower than you and you said first round pick recently I think so the second is what you’re paying to get rid of then it’s essentially Barren for which feels about right to me you think so Barren for Gibson why do you think Barr is worth right now in the trade market I think that’s about what Gibson’s going to cost you I would imagine Anaheim just based on verbi will run a tougher bargain I I age I think Hall I think Hall would need more than a second I I agree but I think the framework of something that makes sense for both teams is there y I agree I agree if they’re going to make a deal that’s not too far off in terms of value and like I said you want to get really weird the Red Wings have a direct need for someone like Trevor zis as well let’s get wild let’s do it I know NHL GMS aren’t creative and but opportunities like this come up so rarely please guys please your friends Pat Steve you like each other make it happen Brad how can you say NHL GMS aren’t creative Pierre Luke DUIs the worst contract in the NHL by a mile Darnell nurse would like a word no no no no I I think the Darnell nurse contract is awful and I think it was awful was the day it was signed I think the pure Luke de one is absolutely the worst because apparently he is not a good teammate either I I agree with you but I like playing Devil’s Advocate what yeah the seven more years left had $8.5 million had a no move Clause ironically that didn’t kick in until July 1 yeah so you’re now stuck with him traded one for one for Darcy keer and Darcy keer you know did he make sense for the capitals no and does it make sense to pay him what they were paying him which is $5.25 million a year for the next three seasons no but that is light years away from how bad Pier Luke Dub’s contract was and for those who don’t know about Pier Luke DUIs it’s not about Talent it’s not about skill it’s about effort and mental and character and I know those things sound like you know old man GM buzzwords but legitimately go watch his game from you know back when he really came on the scene and and when he was lighting it up for Columbus for example versus what he did for the LA Kings last season that guy just does not show up he is habitually absent constant reports of not being liked in the room multiple teams he’s wanted you know basically forced his way out of and they were stuck with him for seven more years at that contract and they got rid of him one for one for a guy who might actually help him in keer yeah they don’t have a goalie that was their whole problem yeah so keer is probably at worst a wash to cam talbat I know talbet had the really hot start to the season but Darcy keer has recently won a Stanley Cup as a starting goalie the floor is at least salvageable before you mentioned it I didn’t know what Darcy Ker’s contract was I didn’t bother looking it up I assumed it was bad it didn’t matter because La won that trade in a landslide just by offloading Dubois who you know me I’ve been on the anti- Dubois train for years because of all the things you well laid out I thought La was crazy if they didn’t buy him out in that brief window they had before he’d go from onethird buyo to two3 buo and they said they weren’t going to do it now I know why I’m sorry Rob Blake I I misjudged you just cuz you fix your own mistake doesn’t make you a genius right oh no but there is something to be said and it is a problem in the NHL of not enough jams admit their mistakes quick enough and get out from them yep because they ended up traing because usually people aren’t stupid enough to take those mistakes but they I think the ultimate deal ended up being I a follow gabardi who wow is are the Jets happy when he’s healthy yes which has kind of been a thing for a long time with him kapari a second round pick in the end all for Darcy keer but context matters in this case it’s better than 14 years of dead cap with a ton of dead cap yeah all that for Dary keer is better than all that for Pierre Luke Duo and his contract this one’s crazy right like it’s insane when I saw this I thought this was like the unmovable contract got got moved don’t tell me a contract in the NHL is unmovable I’m done saying that every contract is movable at this point this is the if wayang Gretzky can get traded but for bad contracts Darnell Nur best You’ ever said on this show 100% it can’t be understated just how much today alone has proven there are enough bad GMS in the NHL to get out from your problems Washington Calgary and San Jose all prove that today Calgary I’ll give a bit of a pass to for the reasons outlined but still Washington and San Jose have no excuse well the nice thing is everyone hated Washington’s front office and Washington as a team when they bought cap friendly and took that resource away from us now the Caps fans hate their team and the front office because now they’ve got Pierre Luke de well the I saw the joke FL floting around on Twitter today the whole reason Washington bought C friendly is they knew this trade was coming and they didn’t want their fan base looking at his contract on C friendly every day they should have delayed it a little bit longer I was just blown away when I saw this one man I I just can’t believe it from Washington standpoint I don’t understand it at all the only way this turns out and it’s still you still shouldn’t have done the deal just based on value like there’s no way you should have done this deal but the only way this turns out for Washington is if they can somehow get the person Pier Luke DUIs to get his act together show up 82 games a year and maybe you get four more charity games I don’t know if they’re going to do that again show up 82 games a year and put out the effort based on the skill you have because Pier Luke DUIs who shows up you know one in every however many games is an incredibly effective player but it’s just becoming so much more sparse so much more sparse in terms of when you actually get that do you know what’s a phrase in life not just in hockey a phrase that’s used before massive and prolonged heartbreak but I can fix him yeah it didn’t work for any of those people but it just might work for us he was truly Elite in one playoff series for Columbus against Toronto that that’s it and then he earned $70 million after that yeah the thing too is even even if you think you can get full value for pier Luke Dubois like does Washington not understand where they are and that they are careening towards a rebuild as soon as oetkin retires and they’re going to be very mediocre until then if they’re doing this deal they have to make about five other massive deals to completely retool their team to be contenders for the next five years six years seven years because holy crap there might not be a team in the NHL positioned worse than Washington to be a cup contender in the next decade at any point they are kening towards the Gretzky go record with oetkin and beyond that they just they don’t care right now they’ll they’ll figure it out then because that’s all they have left on the table well they use they’ll open up cap friendly and try and figure it out if all they care about is the gold Chase sure then go get two really good forwards and a really good power play quarterback to play with a vkin and screw the rest of the line line up uh but Dub ain’t that guy you know he’s putting up 90 points next year now right oh yeah just cuz we dedicated so much air to him you’re welome capitals fans don’t worry we have six more years after that to be proven right yeah I don’t think the capitals are totally dead in the water right now like they still have John Carlson is he like 42 oetkin proves that even though his birth certificate is absolutely doctor because he’s in his early 50s John Carlson younger than you get roasted by yourself my my brother you know I feel like I’m in my 50s right oh you know I actually was doing some some business stuff and I had to message Evan because I wanted to get his uh birth year right and I was like were you born this year or that year and he mentioned the earlier year of the two and I went oh damn my bad sorry man Kevin har Kevin Hart thing yeah thanks jez he’s not he’s not quite an 80s baby no and like Charlie lingren obviously tore the Hardo of Red Wings fans last year so I don’t I’m not sure if I believe what I’m about to say but I think the capitals management believes this that they’re there’s more juice to still squeeze out of this team which is I mean between oetkin and that then all they want to do really is hang around that wild card space and which is not good for Red Wings fans if that is true they made that trade after they saw what New Jersey did in what reality do they think they’re getting in again well that’s that’s another team that’s made a massive upgrade around where Detroit was this year and you know we obviously are not talking or it’s still premature to talk about what teams like Buffalo and Ottawa will do in this off season but surrounding the Red Wings and where they finish this year teams are adding and you know maybe we don’t believe Pierre Luke deu is a significant piece but maybe Washington does I think this helps Detroit’s playoff chances I’m happy with them to take that Gamble yep I am a okay with them doing that I do think New Jersey like barring a bunch of other teams doing some miraculous work I I think New Jersey’s almost a lock to make the playoffs I think this past year was an aberration as it was and now they have one of the best tandems in the NHL in net they should be really good yeah I could see the case for the Islanders falling out Philly not hanging around the playoff race I could see that you can make that argument for Detroit too but there’s still so much summer for a lot of these teams to change it’s it’s hard to lay it out but man this might be one of the cases of a team getting into the playoffs and taking all the wrong lessons from it like an Aller from Washington speaking of Detroit it was reported by Frank serali that he believes Shane Gosa Spar is going to go to market unsurprisingly on July 1st for free agency thinks that 6 million or more might be the number we’ve seen some indication that Detroit would of course be interested in bringing him back who wouldn’t want bring back Sheen gosis bear and what he was able to do offensively for the Red Wings but 6 million or more would I don’t want to speak certainly to what Detroit’s cap structure is going to be like you mentioned Brad a lot is going to change soon but six million or more is that’s a congrats Shane you earned your money this season and unfortunately it can’t be in Detroit again I will be very happy for Shane gos to spare when he gets that elsewhere we’ll see he he still could come back maybe he really liked the the fit in Detroit you never know what kind of happens but H that’s going to cost a good amount for someone okay we’re going to take a quick break and come back and do our Prospect profile as promised first we want to let you know that this episode of the wind wheel podcast is proudly brought to you by laat Blue Light one you see on your screen to find Le Bat in stores near you today you must be 21 or older and as always enjoy responsibly welcome back feels like a a weird episode with the rolling thunder outside and you know starting off talking about NHL news just like the the hodge podge of different things that happened today and and kind of messy not a lot of good flow in terms of linking into the Red Wings and not so why don’t we talk about an entirely straightforward unpro really kind of succinct easy to digest Prospect Trevor Connelly the joke here being that he is by far the most contentious divisive and unpredictable Prospect in this draft because in terms of skill and talent and potential high-end attributes you’re not going to find many players above him outside of the top top guys and in ter ter of concern with the character the person the player and and whether he’ll actually turn out in the NHL based on those things he raises them most questions out of anyone else in the draft so please understand that our analysis coming up is and we’ll say this again as we talk it’s all predicated upon the fact that whoever the amateur scouting team is has to evaluate Trevor Connelly the person his past whether you know the transgressions that he’s had in his past he’s moved on from as he’s grown older whether you know the on and off issues he’s moved on from and he’s matured from that is impossible for us to discern here and anyone who writes anything or says anything on air who who isn’t actually involved in the conversations with his you know old coaches current coaches old teammates current teammates that kind of thing there’s just no way to say that for sure so it’s really just on The Scouting team so we’ll talk about those things a little bit but this is a you know if Trevor connly is a person who is not on your do not draft list here’s who the player is conversation with that said who is Trevor Connelly the person and the player so to sum it up as best I can without giving much opinion on a person I don’t know on Talent he’s the third or fourth best forward in this draft and when you combine that with his rankings which are typically late teams to end of the first round that should give you a pretty good indication of how big some of these red flags are because as an offense producer generator he might have the best hands in the draft I think wheeler said the best hands outside of demad he’s a real good skater he can fly he’s got a bomb of a shot he’s still very slight so he’s got a lot of room to grow add muscle add weight and you got to think how that would improve his game look what happened with Lucas Raymond this year he’s creative he’s a good playmaker he reads the ice not only effectively but he does it quickly with Pace like he doesn’t need a lot of time to make up his mind what to do with the puck and more often than not he does something very good with it shot selection isn’t 100% but it’s again when you have that good of a shot the more you let it rip probably the better I mean if you take the transgressions away and this guy is there at 15 it is a no doubt full stop you absolutely make this pick but we know Steve Eisman is a big character guy I think Detroit’s one of the less likely teams to take him even though at 15 he would be the No Doubt Surefire absolute pick for the Reds I don’t know that I think again it gets into that space of like you just have to kind of know what the player has done or the person has done to kind of mature and grow up now the thing is like I fully agree on who he is as a player in the amount of high-end skill that you can get you wouldn’t be able to get a Trevor Connell type on Ice Talent alone at 15 period that just doesn’t happen in the modern NHL it would have to be some kind of weird aberration for you to know the abilities he has and for him to fall that far which is I mean what you have now potentially but are you certain that he’s grown out of them you saw the u8 FIV minute major that ultimately cost him the tournament that’s going to and that’s been talked about quite a bit that’s going to raise a lot of eyebrows to say has he really grown up enough or is this going to be like a not that it’s it’s Apples to Apples but you look at Merkley for example and how his path has gone because he’s an extremely talented player who’s just not found a spot either because of ostensibly character issues or whatever else so I don’t want to say that there’s like a a type for it I don’t know it’s going to be a tough decision you’re going to figure out quick what team believes that they can you know work with the the person I actually know someone who uh played hockey with Ryan Merkley when they were rookie in the ol hopefully that doesn’t give away too much but I think anyone could have seen it a mile away that he would fall down the boards because everything everyone rumored to be true about him was exceptionally true and I’ve never said person has never said anything of kind nature about Ryan Merkley but bringing it back to Trevor Connelly like I agree with what both you guys said like a true potentially Elite Talent there and he’s got a ton of muscle to add to his frame be highly effective at the NHL level it just comes with there’s there’s one or two guys every single draft it seems like where there’s have a colored past a divisive past with some questionable conduct and it comes down to how much do you believe that they’ve grown from that that have they matured from that is this who they still are you know it’s going to take a lot of digging from the Red Wings organization talking to coaches talking to players talking to other draft eligible players in the USHL asking questions but if they truly believe that Trevor Connelly has matured from this is is a different person is on the right path this is a no-brainer pick at 15 the interesting part of this too is folks will be saying well if it’s determined that Trevor Connelly can actually you know grow up and and move on from what has happened in his past and you think that he can really be more of his on Ice talents and his off I issues why would a team not before Detroit snag him and I think Detroit’s that little window there maybe not the first possible team but I would say 15 is around the range where you start to look at guys with some risk because all the guys ahead of him in terms of consensus rankings are probably worth taking ahead of him when you balance risk and performance so unless you can guarantee for a fact that Trevor connly will be 100% unpro problematic and is there’s no risk at all the what is it maybe 13ish range is about where you start to see teams probably take that risk cuz even if you think Trevor connley is likely to turn out and and be a worthwhile addition to your team there’s still players in that range whether it be seneki or if Kon Falls or TJ gin or whoever that you’re going to be more want to pick because it’s more of a sure thing and there’s still high-end players My Hope Is that he gets picked in the 10 to 14 range because then we don’t have to deal with that and it kicks someone else very good down the board I I think if the red wings were to pick Trevor Connelly I have full faith that they did their due diligence digging in to his personality and his character and I would have no problems with them taking him at 15 because I believe that they would do that yeah and for those who are wondering what kind of has gone into it it’s not that we’re trying to intentionally be vague but there’s just such a long list I will link an article from Scott wheeler he did but it’s everything from you know off I issues uh being accused of directing a racial slur at an opponent during a game which that suspended was eventually over term you know fighting teammates or targeting them in practice accusations of bullying Behavior problematic social media posts of of pretty offensive nature again it’s not something we’re going to try to dive into so I’ll link to that article in case it can help illuminate anything at all but re I think they’re probably isn’t comparable to Connelly in terms of how highend the player is and how far down the board he may fall based on you know on versus off ice aspects to who he is yeah cuz I don’t even like the Merkley comparison cuz Merkley was an undersized defenseman so there’s risk with that inherently yeah it wasn’t Apple apples probably not the best comparison but again without the transgressions the conversation were we probably don’t even do a profile on Connelly because we’d be pretty certain he’s going in the top 10 if not the top five yep so you have to keep that in your the back of your mind this entire time yeah but Trevor connell’s is going to be an interesting one you’re going to understand pretty quickly the moment he’s picked what team what teams thought what of him and it could be Detroit and you know uncomfortable though it may be there’s going to be teams who at their pick say that this is worth more than getting a talent like that is worth more than the hassle right like they’re going to be like okay at 25 the chasm between him and the next guy is so immense that they take him and that might be Detroit cuz what does Detroit need high-end offensive talent and if so they believe they can fix him Not only would they likely do that if he’s there they should do that if they name me who Detroit’s best leftwing Prospect is Jonathan berren who I I think we just mocked in like seven different trades earlier this episode like it it’s almost to the point where you could joke if you had to build the type of prospect in a lab that the Red Wings are lacking the most it would come out looking a lot like Trevor Connelly on the ice and that’s why I have no problems if they draft him because I with Steve Eiserman being such a character guy I would imagine 200% that they have done all the digging and all the investigation they need to do now just a circle back to a previous Prospect profile though if he is there and the Red Wings are conflicted and you’re talking about this Chasm between him and the next guy available there is going to be a prospect likely there available who had similar production in the same League this year Michael ha so it’s going to be one of those things where you’re really going to have to justify it if you do it between Connelly and haage would you say they are a rat and a haage it’s not bad it’s not bad I’m so proud of you right now thank you I was going to say that one felt like oh my God I just caught the end of your eye roll it’s too hot in here to be saying stuff like that and it’s not good stuff we’re gonna talk more about prospects obviously in our next two episodes as we Le up to the NHL draft also for those who are just tuning in for the first year the first round of the NHL draft live stream is one of our most prominent traditions on the Wind wheel podcast because for almost the entirety of this podcast in your 10year existence the draft has been the biggest day of the year for the Red Wings so hopefully one day these these draft streams are not our most important thing but as of right now they are so that’ll happen on the day of round one of the NHL draft on YouTube so stay tuned for that imagine covering Red Wings playoff games and not having to care about the draft imagine still being now we’re almost there almost let’s jump into NHL news speaking of the Stanley Cup Playoffs Brad it was like 52 minutes into last episode when we were in the middle of our you know hypothetical where would the K SMI go right now and you said something that we both agreed on all three of us agreed on which is the next few games no however many they are will dictate who wins a k Smite and you were like and if Conor McDavid goes and scores you know four points in in game five and brings it back to Edmonton then it’s his remember when I said he was the third place on betting sites be the km winner whoever where I want to sprinkle on that oh my God I can look let’s continue the conversation I will figure that out we could have retired at least the one I looked at today he is the current favorite yes because he went did exactly as Brad hypothesized uh the first site that I had looked on previously now has him at number one he is now a minus 185 I’ll continue my adventure because it doesn’t matter how the series plays out from here it’s Conor mcdavid’s award the only thing that can bring it back is if Sergey bosy posts a 50 save shut out in game six to seal it and I still don’t think that that would guarantee it but it would bring him back into play it would because that would have to be an absolute all-time greatest Stanley Cup final performance I could see that tilting it but Conor McDavid if Edmonton wins next game it’s probably going to be because Conor McDavid has two or three points which means there’s a chance in game seven Conor McDavid breaks Wayne Gretzky’s alltime playoff points record there’s actually a chance of that happening he’s five points away and Conor McDavid has eight points in his last two games he already holds the alltime assist record oh and by the way the two guys who are in front of him for points in a single playoff right now are Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux and they did that in the 80s and early 90s when I don’t think goalies knew how to hold a stick properly maybe we’ll look back at this time frame in 20 30 years and be like wow goalies really didn’t know how to hold a stick properly in the 20 24 season maybe but what Conor mcdavid’s doing right now is insane people have become so desensitized to Conor McDavid three-point games to the point where I said they held him to one point in this game which means they shut him down which isn’t wasn’t an insane thing for me to say but we didn’t we didn’t even blink at a Conor McDavid four-point game he’s had eight points in the last two games and everybody’s like yeah that that feels normal for him in the Stanley Cup Final against a team we witnessed in person and when wow this might be the greatest offensive team we’ve seen since the mid 90s Devils well they’ve looked very much like the 2024 Detroit Red Wings lately so they could definitely stand to tighten up there’s definitely some Mojo off in general with the Florida Panthers I think the moment got to them like they not complet like they’re still a great team I still think they’re obviously favored to win the cup but let’s just look at the sequence that ended that game kachuck unsurprisingly goes down and gives everything to sweep the that the best game I think he’s had in the Stanley Cup finals maybe even the playoffs which is saying something because a guy he’s a dog and that would have been an all that on its own was an alltime great goal line clear that is going to be on highlight reels forever if Florida comes down and ties the game it’s the greatest offensive play in hockey history ah Jeff Petri might have something to say about that this year and immediately emman Larsson who I assume thought it went in gives up on the play Conor MC David grabs the puck fires it in you know unbedded which with 17 seconds left would Florida have tied it and all likelyhood no but with the Stanley Cup in the building it’s not about what likely would happen it means you give everything and every part of your body and every ounce of energy and every breath of air you have every single shift until you hear the horn blow and then for a few seconds after that to make damn sure you be like Dan Cleary not believing that the the Stanley Cup Playoffs were over in ‘ 08 in celebrating cuz he just wasn’t sure that there wasn’t another Puck to defend and emman Larson just gave up on that play and that’s one thing there was other plays where players gave up for Florida but they have they they look like they’ve almost been shocked a little bit by Edmonton there’s a crack in the armor for sure right now yeah Conor mcdavid’s goal line goal last night that went between bov’s legs very uncharacteristic something is off hopefully they can they’ve got what 3 days to figure it out that’s a ton of time Unfortunately they got to spend two of those days on a plane trying to get back to back to Edmonton from Florida because it’s so far I don’t know if you guys knew that oh my God there’s more complaints about time zone switches today I was like shut up shut up we all get how time zones work this isn’t new what are you going to do get rid of the Western Conference shut up just remind them just remind them that the Toronto Maple and Detroit Red Wings used to play in the Western Conference what what was it the 2002 Red Wings cup they didn’t get to play a road game in their own time zone till the Cup finals I don’t want anyways but Florida now is at risk Edmonton’s going to be hard to win in not to say they can’t they’ve done it already but Edmonton has all the momentum right now again the odds are stacked against the Oilers they’ve already made a run of this they’ve already probably won Conor McDavid has probably won himself the KH Smite it’s not impossible for them to to do this though if you look at their stats from earlier in the season any time the Oilers lost three straight their records after that under noblock were like unbelievable like 8-0 7-0 12-0 or something I think it was something like 5-0 8 and0 and 16-0 or something like that it was insane also I saw this posted Stuart Skinner stats in games four to7 in these playoffs 9-0 939 safe percentage 1.5 five six goals against average that’s Sergey bosski look I I again it’s incredibly unlikely the reverse sweep it’s it’s there’s only such a a reasonable chance that you can give it even with all the momentum Edmonton has but they have all the momentum the next game is in Edmonton and that’s going to be one of the loudest buildings in hockey history it’s going to be insane if Edmonton scores the first goal oh my God like with the lack of resolve Florida’s shown at points in the last couple games I could not imagine the moment you find it being after Edmonton blows the roof off that place not impossible again they’re a good team well coached but oh my God Florida has to start this next game on fire they have no choice but to start on fire like it sounds insane to say I almost feel like Florida has to score in the first five minutes of that game yeah Florida has to yeah Florida bare minimum has to the first goal and even if they don’t score in the first five minutes the shots better be like 8 to one for Florida then until you know a short-handed goal goes in for Conor Brown and then Tes sucks the life out of him but honestly I think Edmonton is equally as likely and susceptible to have the the life sucked out of the place yeah there there is as with how these last two games have gone you know the last game being maybe the best game in the playoffs high energy high intensity they got to be riding Cloud 9 and the 8-1 win below it they’re down 32 but they could be overconfident going into this game I could see it they they listen to the crowd in warmup they listen to everything and they go oh yeah we got this forgetting their playing the Florida Panthers both outcomes are equally likely I think I don’t give anybody you know a significant Advantage I do think the home iice is going to give Edmonton a slight Advantage here but again there’s so many factors in the game of hockey that could just tank a team do you know the only team that’s ever revers sweep in NHL history in the Stanley Cup finals the Toronto M please the Detroit Red Wings yeah 82 years ago was practically yesterday if you’re Brad well when I opened up the the Wikipedia page it was in black and white so I knew it was significant I’ve never seen a more black and white picture in my life and of course this oldtime hockey guy has blood all over his face Friday the the long time between games is the I for all the complaints about time zones I do think the complaints about how the schedule’s spread out the NHL needs to keep this da Cup final at worst the start of June like this is ridiculous I was at a work event today and someone who doesn’t even watch hockey was commented asked if I’d been watching I obviously said yes and their first opinion on it was I can’t believe how late in the season the NHL or late in the year the NHL goes I’m like it’s terrible you want to talk about the seller cap too the the entire NHL are the exact people who are going up to the Cottages that everyone’s complaining about not being able to go to find a way cut the preseason down they’ll never reduce games so you give up on that pipe dream as much as I would want it to Happ start it a month earlier start cut the preseason down oh the players will be rusty great it’ll make for more chaotic hockey in a a wild start to the season who cares how many months into the season are we still saying some teams are trying to find their form like started in September finish it in May at worst go do the do the the draft should be now free agency June 20th by July 1st everyone’s getting ready for either 4th of July or Canada day weekends done go away couldn’t agree more all right one more piece of NHL news Phil pronic got his payday an eight-year deal at $7.25 million first year no Clause the next three years after that a no move clause and then the last four years of the deal a modified no trade clause but 7.25 million per season for Philip ponic who gets his payday this is what the Red Wings anticipated yes I will say first I’m happy for Phil yeah go go get your money I love it super stoked for him from a red wi’s perspective this is all I’ll say you will to pay $7.25 million to your second pair r d and did you watch Axel sandine pela this year I’ll leave it at that yeah I think Vancouver fans are probably generally happy about this trade because now they’ve got Quin hu’s partner locked up for his Prime oh for Vancouver it’s great yeah I I think it is an good move all around for everyone now that the dust is really settled on this trade the rare everybody got exactly what they wanted Axel sandine pela it’s it’s just funny how directly translatable he is to the role that Philip ponic played on the Red Wings like you you’re basically moving Philip ponic backwards in time not completely but basically I I think heroic will be a better Defender at five on five but I think Sandy pel’s got higher power play and offensive upside he’s really going to have to push to get that handlebar mustache established though yeah I got to start now okay let’s jump into overtime in this episode of the wind wheel podcast overtime is brought to you by our patreon supporters patreon.com wheel podcast again if you want to support the show the bonus episodes the Discord the giveaways all of that and lots more he allow us to continue to produce this show and make it bigger and better especially during the offseason you allow us to produce other great content like expected by whom hosted by pan a and Shan Shapiro and you also allow us to support the Jamie Daniels Foundation through initiatives like winged wheel podcast nights at the LCA in partnership with the Detroit Red Wings or at Van andle arena in partnership with the Grand Rapids Griffin so again patreon.com wied wheel podcast questions from our patrons Joseph Barry says hey jents love the Pod quick question what’s the difference between a no move clause and a no trade clause because don’t they do the same thing thanks guys Barkley goodro taught you the difference today a no trade clause means exactly what it sounds you cannot be traded you can be sent to the miners and you can be waved and claimed by another team a no move Clause prevents you from being claimed by another team on waivers because that’s not allowed with a no move clause and there are situations where a player has a no move Clause but then also has some kind of limited no trade clause so for example Jeff Petri has a no move clause which is why he can’t be waved but he does have a 15 team node trade list which means there’s half the league more that he could be traded to even with the no move Clause so it does get a little bit funny that way but think about it as no move as it pertains to waivers no trade as it pertains to trads unless it’s a no move and there’s no other stipulations and it’s neither if that makes sense question from throw the road puss says hey boys love the podcast heard you guys talking about the walleye a few episodes ago living in the Toledo area I frequent walleye games and you guys absolutely need to check out a game electric atmosphere for a small town we will absolutely do so my question is could you guys expand a little on just how big the talent Gap is that the Red Wings are facing like where would our top players be in the lineup on a few of the top teams in the league or how much better the best players in the league are than our best thanks again for making the morning commute bearable keep up the good work cheers hard well hard to compare them to the Oilers so it’s a Fool’s eror no one can because they’re just a unicorn so if we look at Florida for example Lin and Raymond are probably on their second line right now I think Lin’s their 2C Raymond would be playing on their third pair right wing and that’s not a knock on Raymond it’s just Florida’s got holy [ __ ] good Wingers but I I think Raymond might be higher than that I they tend to spread out their lineup a little more than other teams so that’s why I’m I’m getting at that but either way he could be playing anywhere from 1 to three right wi mhm and on Talon he’s probably their second line right winger I would guess so Lin and and Raymond are two-thirds of their second line de Brink’s on their third line cider probably is their first pairing right d it’s also not a perfect formula because you’re adding more great players to an already great team like for cap reasons we’re probably the EXC here should be pulling someone off The Rock and putting these guys in their place but and there’s not one simple formula but you’re starting to see like the top ends of the line not always but generally the top ends of the lineup are a lot closer now than they used to be like there’s a version of the Red Wings who win playoff rounds or maybe where if you if you don’t look at what the rest of the team is for example take their top line or top four or five forwards or cider wman can be the top pair D it’s not insane to think that it doesn’t come in all shapes and forms but you don’t have to have McDavid or and dry cdle or even McKinnon and Marr for example but generally like you’re it’s not just that the talent at the top is better it’s that they have other Talent where on the Red Wings they’d be top talent but they’re on their second or third line like as the roster stands right now if the Red Wings and this is only guys who have signs so it’s not fair comparison but if it was like the Red Wing second line was fabri Comer and I don’t know pick someone rasm that’s Florida’s fourth line MH and I’m not sure fabri and rason get in the lineup like where would Gustaf forsling be on the Red Wings right beside moider there you go this one from Jeremy dll says hey boys I just listened to expected by whom in the excellent interview with the assistant general manager he made a good point about the lead players on the team setting the salary cap like how pavelski took to do well in Dallas and the players in Boston Etc I know Lin is worth his contract but did he screw us over by not taking a million or so less and setting a precedent or do you think he did take less in his contract is fair I think he did take a little less not a lot but I would say he’s better than Matt barzel Y and Barelle signed his contract first and Lin got less than that so I I would say he didn’t take a significant discount but I bet you on the open market he gets north of nine Evans traumatized mirror says while we’re on the topic what’s your preferred stick brand whatever Brad gets significantly discounted what do you what do you play right now Brad right now for the past uh year I’ve been using Vapor Hyperlite 2 for the two years before that I was using the vapor Hyperlite so I definitely have a type and it’s the bower Vapor I’m a low kick guy and I I like the feel of the stiff blade so I’m a bower guy right now I could be easily swayed like I really like the new Sherwood wrecker the legend Pro that this a great time for us to get a new sponsor yep I’m just going to bleep out all these company names yeah but no there’s there’s there’s lots of options that I would use I just personally prefer Vapors and time for one more here for the sake of not melting Bill NE th guy says Hey dub dub boys looking forward to the free agency frenzy and some good or poor GM decisions who do you think the most sought after free is this season and who is poised to make the most moves you’re looking at guys like gensel you know we’ll see what happens with Stam Co Reinhardt slaven looks to be on the track to be resigned by Carolina Montour Maro I would have said Reinhardt that would have been my my pick who’s gonna make moves van the surprisingly maybe not surprisingly Vancouver is all over everything they are the biggest name around ginel right now I you always have to look at Vegas as constantly trying to make massive moves I wonder about Seattle Seattle and Utah were my two answers Utah for obvious reasons but Seattle’s probably not going to be satisfied with another like in the funk season right I forget who said it today but I was listening to it apparently they might be the the team to watch on line which would make sense for that yeah okay we are going to wrap up this episode of the wind wheel podcast thank you all so very much for tuning in to not 1. Hope Johansson doesn't get buried as the 7th D, even if he makes some mistakes here and there. I'd rather have a learning prospect making mistakes than a 36 year old vet making mistakes (no names)

  2. Okay I think you guys are way over estimating how much we need to pay someone to get rid of holls contract. At 3 million for 2 more years, that is 2.3 million LESS than Marc Staal in 2021, who did admittedly play in ~20 more games than holl and was better at the time, but not 2.3 million better. All the red wings got was a 2nd round pick and gave nothing in return.
So I think saying Holls contract price to get rid of him for nothing in return is a 2nd round pick or more when a long precedent of deals like this have happened under a more confined cap situation is way over estimating how much other GMs for bottom feeders would be asking for.

  3. Does Yzerman care that much about character? Like Sprong was accused of beating a guy up in a nightclub last summer when he was 26, and I didn't hear a beep about that from Yzerman, much less them trying to nullify his contract due to a breach of a moral clause or something like that, which you would expect from someone that wants their players to be 'upstanding citizens of high moral character'. I don't see him minding one bit that Connelly was a bully/brat towards his teammates sometime when he was 13 or younger, as even the parents that alleges that said it seemed to stem from his competitiveness.

  4. TLTR – As a Swede, I am not at all worried about Albert.

His Dad is Roger "Ragge" Johansson. Roger is perhaps best known for his fiery will and self-sacrificing playing style. Roger is not one of the most famous Swedish defenders we have had, however very useful in his team, a work horse. The saying is – The apple normally doesn't fall far from the tree.

Albert's new contract with RW is good as it gives both parties a chance to evaluate where they stand next year. Albert was taken in the second round in his draft year, which means his ceiling is probably not that high. As a fan, we need to understand that the demands cannot be set too high there, give him time to adapt and mature. Advantage is that he is still young and developable as time is something RW has a lot of. Let's not forget that even Peter the Great was a "late bloomer" after all.

However, the floor of Albert is very solid when it comes to his overall skills. What stands out to me is his IQ, very good skater and two-way defender. He obviously has more tools than these, however, this is what I think he was drafted for because his fundamentals are solid overall.

Comparing him with Maatta is not entirely wrong as there are similarities. If Albert reaches that minimum level, I'm happy as a "draft pick". However, I think there is more to squeeze out of Albert. Not saying he'll be a RW top 4 defender here, but more so than Maatta. I like Maatta, so nothing negative about Hans career so father.

Everything will probably be about what Albert is willing to sacrifice in order to reach the next step. Which translates to his focus being mostly purely mental work and this is where his father's dnd comes into play. The Johansson family is a hockey family, Albert's brothers also play at a lower level than Albert. Of the apples the tree produced, Albert is the best chance to reach the NHL.

  5. The NMC for Markstrom probably didn't affect his value much. He's 34 going on 35 with two years left on his deal. He's been inconsistent the last couple of years for Calgary who has been a better defensive team.

Thinking he'd get much more than a 1st + young defensive defenseman is silly imo. He might not even be playing for the Devils by the time the pick is made by Calgary.
