Network your team every day welcome to a Wednesday edition of locked on hurricanes your team every day thank you to the day or for making this your first listen of the day five days a week Monday through Friday talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes I am your host Zack Martin I am the Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the hockey Riders also do some AHL coverage over at the caller times I am the co-host of the C Cast was a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast along with all my duties here at locked on Hurricanes got a very exciting episode for you guys on a Wednesday and it’s going to be mostly talking about Eric tolsky who’s been now officially named the Carolina Hurricanes general manager which we all kind of knew was most likely going to happen of course but you know over the last couple you know over some episodes that I’ve talked about Eric tolsky and how it probably could look out for the GM it was kind of a lot of due diligent stuff but is finally been announced we’re going to talk about that big decision also heing some thoughts from Tom d Tom Dundon what he you know what made him choose Eric tolsky after all hear from Eric tski himself just how get the opportunity to be the new GM of the Carolina Hurricanes along with some priorities and some thoughts in you know on Seth Jarvis the ufas and all of that good stuff but before we jump into the meat and the potatoes of the episode today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase terms apply so like I said it’s we are officially in the Eric tulsky era of being the general manager it was announced on Wednesday that the team will make him it was announced on Tuesday that he was announced officially as the GM of the Carolina Hurricanes and it’s really great to see for the fact that you kind of knew that it was going to happen and it’s good to see you’re happy for him he’s been with the Carolina Hurricanes for over 10 years now he joined the team back in 2014 when Ryan Francis with the GM he was you know added on got some you know more roles as his time went on eventually works his way up to the assistant general manager position he also runs the pro side of the scouting Department as well and also runs the Anna Lake department so a lot of hats for Eric tolsky and it’s just good to see that you know he got the interim tag you’re were kind of wondering how long that was going to be if he was going to stay the interim would he eventually get the general manager fulltime or would they bring in someone else once they announced that the Hurricanes were going to do a search but in the end it was like we all thought it was due diligence and it turned out to be that Eric tski was the guy and when a when Tom dunon was asked about his decision to make tolsky the GM uh Tom Dunn said said when I started the process of talking to other people it only reinforced what I already thought he was going to be the right choice and yeah it makes sense it’s it was kind of a foregone conclusion that it was one of those things where if it was either him or Darren York I think you would have been perfectly fine either way depending on one of those two guys that you would pick as your next general manager but a lot of people and and you know Jeff Merck talked about it and even Elliot Freeman of 32 thoughts those guys both thought that it was going to be Eric tolsky and you know a lot of people in Carolina thought it was probably going to be him too was just a lot of due diligent stuff and stuff like that and and in the end it kind of worked out that it was Eric tulsky all along and you know looking back on just how with the whole process of you know what’s next because the fact that you know it was a how tski was an important voice for the franchise and the fact that you know it’s the fact that he ran the he ran the antic Department he ran the pro gang for the last four years and it’s one of those things where it was a collaborative effort from it wasn’t just a Don wadell thing it was Don wadell with Eric tski Darren York Rod rore Justin Williams the scouts the analytics and it wasn’t just like was a one set thing or the other to made the final decision and Tom dunon even said too that analytics has never made a single choice for us even though that’s the perception it’s just one input into a much larger conversation around fit and character and work ethic and that’s what it comes down to is the fact that yeah Dell was the main GM but there was a lot of input there was a lot of collaborative effort from the pro Scouts the amateur Scouts you know with Darren juror and the amateur side you know Eric tolsky running them you know the pro side you also had Justin Williams and Rod bore and now you’re looking at the fact that yeah Donell is not there anymore but you’re still keeping a lot of the main core around and even what you know talking about just the group dynamic and toski was asked about he even said we talked this being a group dynamic decision-making process and it’s important to convey how important Rod’s voice is in that and how important Darren’s voice is in that we probably going to have to add some additional bandwidth to our management team and those people will be important voices too this is not a way man show I couldn’t do it on my own Rod has a huge piece in everything we do and Darren is essential to making this work and that’s something that you love to see for the fact that you look at how it’s not just it’s not Eric tolsky and that’s it he’s not going to be making all decisions he’s not going to be the guy who’s going to do everything and it’s his way highway it’s it’s a group effort and that Dynamic of how they work as a crew and that’s what’s made this team so successful over the last six seasons it’s not just one or two guys just talking and that’s it no you’re looking you’re talking to your head coach you’re talking to Justin Williams as a former player who kind of thinks the same way Rod does but also gives a different perspective the fact he’s been in the front office for a little bit too but you’re talking to your you know past you know I guess you’re now former head pro Scout head of the L legs Department you’re also talking to your head you know your guy who runs the amateur Scouts so it’s a huge collaborative effort and like you said now I’m curious to see who they’re going to bring into the front office as well because you know there’s G be some other pieces or some other hats the guys are going to have to wear because it’s Eric toski is just going to be the general manager the hurricanes are going to be looking for the next president of hockey Ops so and it’s just one of those things where it’s just being the general manager there’s no president so I’m really curious to see what Tom dunon does in that department but you know I guess we’ll hear to see but the fact that you see from what tolsky has gone from fact you’re looking at someone who got degrees in research and chemistry and all this stuff and then he turns into you know writing you know various blogs and websites for NHL teams and doing all those Analytics stuff and then eventually gets hired on by the by the hurricanes with Ron Francis back in 2014 for fulltime and then you like you said you just see him continuously just keep growing and growing and growing and now you are at a point where it’s now he’s the general manager he’s the guy and now it’s just okay what’s next you already tooken care of Jaylen shaffield you know we talked about earlier this week where he got him signed for a 3X3 you know you already got Ry Suzuki signed up for a oneye 2 a contract and now you have all these other question marks when it comes to you know your unrestricted free agents your restrictor free agents you know go tending guys you want to keep around you possible extensions for other guys so like talk about getting your throwing your feet into the fire fear toski is the fact that yeah you were an assist in general manager but now you’re the guy great like they said you still have the group dynamic effect but now it’s like okay you are you know the for the front facing general manager of the Hurricanes now and you have a lot of questions that are going to be throwing your way because it’s okay Dell’s not there now you have a bunch of question marks of like who’s G to stay with the team you know you know all the ufas rfas you know guys who are you know who are still with the team like are you looking at buyouts are you looking to keep them around is there possible trades so it’s it’s going to be a lot it’s a lot of moving around for the Hurricanes which a lot of people didn’t think was going to you know you just think probably been on Ice moves but now you’re looking at the front office and there’s a lot of moves going on in the front office too so there’s a lot of things that are making it very interesting for the Hurricanes as a whole but also for Eric tski because now he’s got to go and figure out how to construct this team as the new general manager the new face of the franchise in terms of the front office and he’s got a huge task ahead of him with all the guys that are going to be available guys who have their rights and stuff like that so don’t envy uh Eric tolsky in the slice but very very excited for him to see you know that he got the interim tag removed he is the guy now in Carolina and I’m very excited and curious to see what the Eric tolsky era for the Hurricanes looks like now talking about all this the question marks on what’s going to happen uh he did sit down with um Luke the of the news is zerver and there was a lot of thoughts uh that Eric tski shared and what what he’s thinking and what’s going to hopefully happen for the Hurricanes so there’s a lot of priorities that’s going to happen this offseason for him and when it comes to dealing with the roster of itself which we will get into here on a Wednesday edition of lockdown [Music] Hurricanes game time is the authorized ticket Marketplace of Major League Baseball which makes gting tickets faster and easier prices on the game time app actually go down the closer gets the first pitch with killer last minute deals all in prices view stream receip and the tolsky did sit down with Luke Tock of the noobs news and observer and you know Luke did ask him a few qu you know a few questions on specific different things we’re talking like the group overall free agents the goal tending you know trying to find ways to get better and there are specific players they all also talked about as well the one of the main things you know kind of the first things that kind of jumped out was talking about the group as a overall team aspect and Eric toski said I feel great about this group this team has been consistently excellent I would say for four years over four years there’s only one team that has more regular season points than we do and only a few that have more postseason wins obviously nobody goes into this business dreaming of suay having a bunch of regular season wins in a series or two each year so nobody’s going to be satisfied until we reach the goal but I think my predecessors deserve a ton of credit talking about Ron Francis assembl the group that was ready to break out and then Don wadell took the team to the next level and with Rod berore has been a huge piece of that and will continue to be as we do what we can to take it to the final step and that’s what’s so great about Eric toski is the fact that he knows that like it’s his team now but you still feel the aspects of guys like OT terrain and you know Jacob slaven Brett pesy all those guys that came in during the Ron Francis era then you go into the Don wadel era where you’re looking at Sebastian Alo Andre fov Seth Jarvis stuff like that so now you’re getting like two different GMS as kind of Blended together roster and now for him is now he’s taking those guys in finding his next you know his group to add on top of that so you get a more Blended aspect of what a r Francis Don wadell Eric tolsky type team is going to look like but the thing is though a good one centerpiece has been there for a lot of it for the most part is Rod bremore and now you’re looking at for the fact that he’s been a vital esset to the team he was an assistant coach then became the then became the head coach in 201819 now for the last six seasons You’ seen six straight first round wins multiple division titles multiple Eastern Conference Final appearances so and a lot of regular season wins so you see of how with Rod bore being there how much he’s the nucleus of that and just being able to take a bunch of different rosters that were constructed by different general managers and now the fact you got Eric tski coming in knowing that it’s a really good group the last four years they’ve been really really good like I said three Street division titles in the last four years and you look at what you know previous JMS have done and what Rod bore has done as well so it’s good to see that yeah it’s his team but he’s not going to forget of how they got there and it’s really great to see now talking about free agents uh Eric toski said we are still talking to them there’s a lot of possibilities about how we shape this team going forward and we’re doing everything we can to keep as many of the players as possible the these guys have been with us for a long time they’ve been a big part of what we’ve done and if there’s a way to get a deal done we want to do that the reality of the cap is sometimes we won’t be able to but yes we are continuing to try and that’s kind of the huge thing that I think is probably going to be the biggest hurdle for Eric tolsky is the fact that you have a lot of guys who had really good Seasons this past year looking at Steph n you overall a career year for him T ter V had a career high in goals you know he just made 5.4 million do you bring him back and what that deal would possibly look like for him being 29 Jordan martinook has been been like the heart and soul of the team he’s been like the essentially the the locker room guy the glue of the team and just what he does for them as well and then you know you look at Brett pesy got drafted by the Hurricanes you know you hope to see him be a hurricane for life because you want to see him complete the story of seeing the team go from the Dark Ages see that transition with BR Bren Moore now you’ve been in the playoffs knocking on the door multiple times and you kind of want to see it for him you know R Shay after getting traded to the Hurricanes from the New York Rangers you want to see him stick around because he he’s a really good offensive defenseman you love to see him stick around and do what he can do you know it’s also looking at the restricted fre agents you know what’s going to happen with Martin NE is I know we’ve talked about him so much on the show I know you guys are probably sick of of hearing about it but that’s kind of one of the big stories that we’re going to hear a lot of in the off season but you know Jack jury You Know Jack jury’s done really well for you know himself but the hurricanes has been with the organization for a while you know won the cter cup with Chicago Wolves along with Jaylen shaffield Steph n and pi kov and then the one of the bigger questions is Seth Jarvis what does that look like for him too because he just had a career we had over 30 goals over 60 points led the team in Power Play Goals with 13 led the team in the playoffs with five goals finished second and game-winning goals tied for short-handed goals like the just just keep naming everything that Seth Jarvis done oh and long for the fact that he did play over 60 games entered this year with a torn labor and a torn Rainer cff and then he broke his finger in the playoffs and he still continue playing it didn’t seem like he lost a beat and that’s kind of one of the big things too is like yeah you have all these ufas you have a couple R phase but I think you know what Elliot Freeman said on 32 thoughts is you want to take care of Rod brenon Moore done you’re hoping to get Jacob Slava done it’s sounds like something might be done but we’re waiting for July 1 to see if there’s an actual announcement because he has one year left on his contract the second thing was Seth Jarvis and what does that mean and you know Eric tulsky was asked that you know talk about the contract negotiations with Seth Jarvis because the fact that he’s a restricted free agent Eric said I’ve talked to his agent we both like to get an eight-year deal done we have not talked about what that would look like we have July 1 unrestricted free agents we need to sort through and figure out what we have left but look Jarvis is going to be with us for a long time and figuring out what the term is and what the dollars are to make it h to make that happen is still in front of us so basically for the most part I would say 95 to about 97% of the fact that yeah Seth Jarvis is gonna stay in Carolina you can almost say it’s like 99.9% it’s just what’s the dollar amount what’s the you know what’s that going to be they’re saying term they would love to get it eight year deal done which was a lot more because a lot of people are thinking seven but if you’re talking eight years you’re taking him to age 30 what does that aav look like is the bigger question too are you talking six and a half are you talking closer to seven seven and a half maybe honestly throw the brink truck at him because you know how good this guy’s GNA be you know his third season has a career year not a lot of these guys growing trees very much and you want to keep a superstar like that locked in I know some people are going to say that Seth deris isn’t a superstar yet he’s a he’s a star player he’s almost on the precipice of being a superstar all writing for the fact of just how good he already is what it’s just good to see that that Eric tolsky is saying guys don’t worry about it it’s gonna get dumb we just gotta figure out what the term and what the dollar amount is but he’s he’s basically saying Seth D is gonna be with the Hurricanes for a long time I wouldn’t be surprised if you see Seth Jaris being a Caroline hurricane for life so that’s really great to see so there is a lot more that toski and and do got got into on the noobs and deserver piece so we will continue talking about some other stuff that was brought up in that news news article and go over stuff like that and we’re going to do that here in a second on a Wednesday edition of lockdown [Music] hurricanes welcome back to a segment three of locked on hurricane your team every day so like I said the end of segment two we’re going to go more into the Eric toski piece that Eric that Luke dck went over in the news an observer and after talking about Seth Jarvis another question was talking about the goenda perov and Frederick Anderson because that’s kind of one of the big things is the fact that you saw how kov played a good majority of the season during the regular season when you know Frederick Anderson was out and now you go to you know Anderson comes back after Miss in over 40 games it kind of swapped back and forth regular season and then it was mainly Anderson in the playoffs and this is one of the big things like what’s going on with the goal tending situation Eric said I feel very good about them again we’re never complacent so if there is something available we’ll be looking at it I think that’s just a universal truth of this organization but I’m completely comfortable with these two I know the hurricanes have been rumored to look at lonus olark I don’t know what other goal tenders might be available to they could possibly look at it could be a thing where you know Frederick Aron’s in the last year of his deal Pier kachak was going into the second year of his four-year deal it could we could be looking at a thing where it could be coov and Anderson for one more season and then we’ll see after that I know Spencer Martin just signed a one-year deal as well so he’s goingon to stay in Carolina so you already got your three goalies that are probably going to be in Carolina moving forward it’s just going to be you know who’s the one a who’s the one B between p and Anderson for me I would I would be okay with with p with with p k off being the 1A and Anderson’s the 1B because you know Freddy is kind of injury-prone of course you know last year you can’t really do anything with blood cliding issues but I thought p played really well for the you know what they needed him for and I think if you’re looking at a guy who could be your 1A I think coach checkov could be your guy so you know like said they might kick the tires and what other goalies might be available for a trade free agency who really knows but if they run it back with coov and Anderson I’d be totally okay with it you know they’re good goenda kind of get that one a I think he’s ready to be the guy for the hurricanes and the go tending position now one of the next questions was talking about competing you know what will it take from them to compete for the Stanley Cup Eric went on to say we just want to get better honestly I think one of the things you ask yourself is what this team needs to to do to get over the hump and I look back at history and Chicago was very different from Los Angeles La was very different from Pittsburgh Pittsburgh was very different from Washington Washington was very different from St Louis so I don’t think there is one thing you need to do there’s not a magic solution that will get us over the hum we just need to keep finding ways to get better and he’s right you look at how the Chicago Blackhawks were you know they won three cups in six years and there’s a lot of they had their guys where it was like they had like their you know Jonathan Tay and Patrick Kane Duncan Keith Brent sebr Nicholas jerson was there too you think about because he won all three cups with them Brandon sod was there but then you go and get you go and look at Trey deadline Acquisitions you get armanov you go get John Madden you go get certain guys that help fill in some certain holes and stuff like that so it was a lot of they go all in tear down the next season still make the playoffs when I very far but then go and get more guys break it down a little bit go get their next guys the Kings you look at the fact that you was you know Patrick Brown an Kopitar Drew dowy stuff like that so they had their guys too but they were and they were getting it done you know as an eight seed now now as one of the bigger season they start like eight season stuff like that but they still got it done too which just depends on you also had Jonathan Quick in that with the black hawk share Cory Crawford you also had you know a bunch of different guys so it’s one of those things where you look at how things were built differently Pittsburgh Cindy Crosby ofg Malin Chris lat Tang at one point sh Mark G flurry it’s not it’s not one solution it’s what works for you and how you keep building on it so it’ be very interesting to see how that gets done it’s not a you could almost say it’s a happy cat league but also at the same time it’s one of those things where it’s you have to keep building on what works for you and help build your system I think the hurricanes are going to do that they’re a team who who relishes in their system and they find guys who can go get it done so it’ll be very very interesting in terms of that now when it comes to the player tracking era how it come it’s kind of like you know how you make most of how player tracking is done in the NHL and Eric went on to say right now is the time to be stepping up to get us the ability to make the best use of that data as fast as possible and is a long-term research project to do that I don’t anticipate Staffing up massively in the near future because it’s hard in the early stages of a long-term project to justify a huge investment but I think over time people are going to find that they get more and more return out of their richer and richer data sets that we have it’ll be easier to justify building out of staff to make use of that data and that’s talking about how the way the the Hurricanes get done as they do you know with Eric tulsky and the analytic staff is it’s been it’s been a slow process for them and you can see how Tom Dundon has invested in that and you see where you know and Don W even said too before he left is the fact that the hurricanes look at Players differently per their analytics per their data and what they believe is what the price is for them and some players might not like that but it’s what’s worked for the hurricanes and it’s something that they’re going to keep building on so yeah like Eric said it’s a it’s a process is going to keep growing over time it might be annoying at first for players might be annoying for agents as well because they’re trying to be like okay well how can you say like these guys are on these teams are making this much money how come I’m not doing it but it’s the hurricanes are like well here’s the analytic data this is what we’re going with too and you know you know also do you fit with the team and stuff like that so it’s a lot of it’s a lot of behind the scenes part so we’re not going to know exactly what it is but it’s something that it’s you know it’s slowly developed over time but it’s kind of worked for the hurricanes and it’s something they’re just going to have to keep you know building off of and I have full faith that tolsky and York and all those guys what the scouts are going to do because you know there’s 15 supposedly from what Eric tulsky says there’s 15 people on The Scouting staff and there could be more it just depends on what that is but then you look at what Justin Williams has done as a special visor Rod bore as the head coach Tom dunan as the owner he is very Hands-On but it’s not just one guy making the decisions it’s a group effort and that’s what’s been working for the hurricane so I’m very excited to see what comes up next and honestly just like I said throughout this episode very excited for Eric tolsky you know good he’s got the permanent GM position I’m excited to see what’s next for him and the Hurricanes but that will wrap up Wednesday’s episode of lockdown hurricanes I hope everyone enjoyed this episode talking about Eric tolsky and just hearing quotes from him while talking to Luke dck and just kind of 1. Great episode man 👍.
For me Tulsky said exactly what I needed to hear – he wants to keep as many of these guys as possible. I wanted the cup so badly this season because I wanted to see this core in particular raise the trophy as Canes – absolutely love these guys.

It's not gonna be an easy off-season, with at least a couple guys probably moving on, but I'm hoping to see mostly familiar faces at the home opener next season. That's why I'm so relieved that Tulsky sees Seth as the future and he'll have plenty more chances to be a part of a Hurricanes championship team.

  2. Trade the rights to Drury for a 2nd round pick. Save that money. He is a good defensive forward but has zero offensive punch. Give Suzuki a shot in the NHL. He has a better offensiv upside. Did great in preseason last year. Looked 5 times better than Drury. Suzuki is cheaper as well and leaves more money for others. You need a right hand center. Necas is that right hand center. Necas was drafted as a center. Played center on the PP a cuple of years ago when Aho wa out. That PP was very succesful. Shared with KK when Necas KK and Svech were the Canes top productive line two years ago. Why RBA did not go back to that line is a mistory. Why RBA is so against Necas at center is also a mistory. He has improved greatly on the defensive side of the puck.
