[Pat McAfee] “The belief is that Jake Guentzel had an ask for Carolina which I believe is 8×8.. I think the Hurricanes have indicated that they will do that contract and now we’re waiting to see if it gets hammered out” ~ Elliotte Friedman

The fuck does Pat know about ice quidditch
Damn. Here I thought that was in the ballpark of our lowball. If we were unwilling to offer in the range of 8×8, then I think that means we are very unlikely to chase after any of the prominent UFAs either.
I already had a feeling we wouldn’t be tied to signing anyone in free agency, but this just confirms my suspicion that last year was the real last chance we had at making a legitimate run happen. I think now we’re going into the “see how things play out” phase where we don’t even spend to the cap and just wait to see where we’re at at the deadline. If we’re looking hot, add a rental piece. If we suck, try to sell pieces. The former is the most likely. It’s sad but we all knew we’d get here eventually.
I wouldn’t give Jake an 8×8, but I can understand why a younger team looking to chase a cup would.
We’re just not at the stage where we can afford to spend that kind of money and that kind of term to guys that are about to be on the wrong side of 30.
By the time his age and cap hit matters for a team like Carolina, their window will be starting to close.
Best of luck to him in Carolina. That’s a contract that we have no reason to offer right now.
Reminder that word was Guentzel didn’t want to negotiate his contract midseason. All he said after being traded was that he wanted to stay here.
Dubas had to do what he had to, especially with Guentzel not wanting to negotiate a contract.
Yeah this isn’t changing my opinion on the whole thing. $8M is not an insignificant cap hit and 8 years for a guy who’s 30 a month into this season is too long for a team that needs to rebuild in the near future if not immediately.
Glad we got what we could out of a trade, and glad Jake is getting the bag somewhere.
