we have officially made it it is draft day for the NHL on a Friday edition of lock on hurricanes your locked on hurricanes your daily podcast on the Carolina hurricane part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to a Friday edition of locked on hurricanes your team everyday part of the locked on podcast Network thank you to the everyday for making this your first listen the day five days a week Monday through Friday talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes I am your host Zack Martin I am the Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the hockey Riders I also do some AHL coverage over at the caller times I am the co-host of the Serge cast which is a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast along with all my duties here at locked on Hurricanes got a very good show for you guys today on a Friday as we get to finally do the preview of the 2024 NHL entry draft as round one starts on Friday and then round two starts on Saturday we are finally here get to talk about where the Carolina Hurricanes pick overall in the draft especially on Friday night over at the sphere in Las Vegas also going to go over the latest rumors the dude through around the Carolina Hurricanes as you know they’ve been pretty busy in a lot of the rumor talks over the last few weeks but is ramped up ever so much more over the last couple days especially Thursday going into Friday and we’re also going to talk about the four nations and the all rookie team as two Carolina Hurricanes specifically have been named to one of those two things so to kick off the show today we’re going to talk about the 2024 and in entry draft because we’re like I said we’re finally here day one is Friday and we get to have day two on Saturday and with where you can actually you know when does it actually start round one will begin at 7 o’clock Eastern uh tonight on Friday and then rounds 2 through 7 will start at 11:30 amm and if you’re watching in the United States uh day one will be broadcasted on ESPN and then day two will be put on ESPN Plus in the NHL Network so at least that that way you know where to watch it you know tonight 7 o’clock is start time tomorrow is 11:30 on Saturday and then ESPN for Friday night and then Saturday all day will be ESPN Plus in the NHL Network now with the Hurricanes they have a good amount of draft picks coming into the 2024 NHL n draft and right now they have in the first round they get the 27th overall pick which will be on Friday night and that’ll be kicking off their you know one and only pick as of right now as of this recording right now they only have one pick in the draft at 27 and then starting tomorrow on Saturday round two they’ll have the 60th overall pick followed by the 92nd overall in the round three 124 in round four and then 156 overall in round five gets really interesting because they have three picks in the six round at 168 that they got from Ottawa 184 that they got from Toronto and then four picks later at 188 and then they cap off their draft with the 220th overall pick in in round seven the fact that the Hurricanes out of their nine draft picks this year they have seven that are originally theirs with the two from Ottawa and Toronto and the reason why they got those picks is because in February the the Hurricanes got their six Brown pick in a three- team trade with anim Han Toronto with the fact that the Hurricanes took on some of Ilia lbushkin salary so that’s why they got the sixth rounder from Toronto and then for the Weber trade uh with Ottawa that was the the pick that was the trade in March for the other six rounders so basically just a right steel first six and then taking buin salary in the Toronto and aeim three wage R so that’s how you got your two other six round options now how the draft usually works in general like who can be chosen and stuff like that you know for North American players you know they have have to be over 18 years old by September 15th of the year of their draft and they also going to be under 20 years of age by December 15th of the same year that they can be selected guys who are not from North America um they’re pretty much under the same guideline until the until they’re 21 years old and then uh players born between September 16th 2005 and September 15th 2006 are are in their first year of eligibility so that’s kind of what who gets who’s allowed to get picked and stuff like that now in terms of what the hurricanes are going to be doing it’s very interesting to see what the team does I know you know last year they picked they picked 30th they got Bradley and Theo and now they’re now they’re at 27 and no one’s really sure who the hurricanes are going to take at 27 because there’s a there’s a lot of potential names that could be there it’s H it’s it’s a tough place to be in when you’re picking at 27 because when you think about who’s available and where and stuff like that and the fact that you know for me when I did the mock draft with you know the other other lockdown HL host I picked Sam O’Reilly the rightwing from the London Knights now other guys who could be available around that area you could be talking about rder Richie the Ford from Prince ala Raiders maybe Michael heg the center from the Chicago Steel if someh how it works so you could like an EJ Emer from the US national development team same thing for Cole Hudson it’s just really interest it’s it’s going to be it’s you’re curious to see who’s going to be where because you don’t know how the draft is going to roll out there’re we could be seeing a lot of surprises of where you know mean there’s guys who shouldn’t have fallen that far do fall that far or maybe the team you know wants to pick someone who’s not really around that area but thinks they’re you know maybe who’s going in early round two that could go in round one so it just really depends on how they want to do it and I wouldn’t be surprised if they would with you know Richie or Riley hag you know Emer Hudson maybe T stiger from you know the US under 18 team who’s the left wing center it’s it that’s the one thing about the drafts cuz you kind you kind of know where you’re at in terms of the first for this draft at least you know he’s going to go one two and three is going to be very interesting there pretty much a free-for-all after four it’s not like last year where it’s kind of like K conard’s one you think Fant Tilly’s two and then you know Leo Carlson’s three but you know didn’t really you know two and three kind of swapped but for this draft it’s you’re looking at a spot where you know once again the hurricanes are gonna be you know relying on their really good scouting team and that’s you know we know with eroli as the main person for the you know at the time the pro Scouts and then looking at you know with Darren nework of the amateur Scouts you know what they’re going to do they do they do a good job every year because because you get Bradley Nell you’ve got Jackson Blake you’ve got you know Scott Morrow you got all these guys recently then even in the past you’ve had you know a lot of great pickups you know you get Seth Jarvis in 2020 you get you know know you know mariches and all those guys and you keep looking back and back and back and you know and it’s just one of those things where like you know wherever you’re in the draft the hurricanes are probably gonna most likely get the best options and they usually have the in the recent years and like I said you’re at the back end of the first round again you’re kind of used to that spot now if you’re the Hurricanes for the last six years because You’ made deep playoff runs and that’s why you see that you don’t really see them anywhere in the you know top half of the draft and you know do you go for the L you know are you in the lottery hunt and stuff like that so it’s just if you’re the Hurricanes you know the thing for them is you go for the best go for the best option at 27 if you think that’s Sam O’Reilly that’s great if you think it’s someone else on the off the board that no one’s possibly thought of yet you know it’s a good possibility as well it’s you know and there’s a there’s a lot of things that you’re looking at terms of you know do you go for Center to get some more Center depth in the future do you go for some Wingers do you go for defense I don’t expect a goalie to go in the first round at all especially from Carolina because where they’re at right now in terms of their goal tending I don’t think it’s a big need I would definitely say probably a need is right side defense you’re probably looking at definitely some Wing options now with a lot of ufas coming up for the Hurricanes that they’re going to have to probably look and get some you know acquired depth around the wing positions I would even say looking at Center you definitely want to try to find your 2C of the future somewhere in the draft as well it’s just you know who knows where that’s really going to be so you’re trying to have to go and look at you know possible needs in the future I definitely say it’s right side defense and definitely wings are going to be your main key focuses if you’re the hurricanes and then looking at the center dep yeah you can work on that Center depth too it’s it just depends on what Eric tolsky and the Scouts have looked at and their main goal plan is of what’s next for them and like I said round one’s always the craziest part of the night because you don’t know what’s going to happen because there going be some big trades that are going to happen which you know the hurricanes are have been rumored to be in some in some crazy trades so we’ll definitely have to talk about that you know during segment too and then day two it’s just you know who finding the Diamonds in the Rough finding the steals in rounds two through seven and you know that’s just yeah you’re talking a good number of you’re talking about six rounds you know in one day and you know those ones are usually flying pretty fast but you know on you know Friday night is usually your longest night of the you know of the draft because it’s you know takes a few hours to get 32 picks there’s a lot of teams you know you know it’s a whole show and all that so it’s going to be late before we know where Carolina is but at least we know they’re at 27 as of right now of this recording and right now it’s up in the air you because every draft board I seen it’s someone different so as long as the hurric are getting the best guy available at 27 or the guy who fits the need of the team best which usually is what they do they always go for the best team fit need I can definitely see that happening so it’ll be very interesting to see what the hurricanes are going to do in terms of that but at least we know going in that we have our you know as of now the nine picks of the draft for the Carolina Hurricanes and just one more time as a quick reminder 27th overall the 60 the 92 the 124 156 168 184 188 and 120 you’re talking one pick in every round outside of the outside of the six where they got three six round picks coming away from a trade with Ottawa and the Toronto mapley so that will wrap up segment one uh we talked about you know just you know where the hurricanes are picking where you can watch and all that stuff over the next couple days now we’re going to talk about the latest rumors that have been kicking around over the last couple days or so so with that being said we’ll get to that here in a second on a Friday giraff edition of locked on [Music] hurricanes passion drive and patience the for warning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything you need to maintain your vehicle and Carolina Hurricanes over the last couple weeks especially over the last few days youve really wanted to think about it of course you know with Martin neers being in Trey talks and you know I’ve talked about a lot in the show I’ve also written about it a lot over at the hockey rers make sure you go check those out if you haven’t read those yet and it’s one of those things of where you know are the Hurricanes going to make a move are are we looking at Martin E just getting traded you know somewhere in the draft are we going to do it like some people thought it’s GNA be for it a lot of people think it’s going to happen on draft day what teams are still available and stuff like that what picks it can go after and I know over the last week you know Frank saravali over the daily Faceoff talked about how the Carolina Hurricanes were supposedly in talks with the New Jersey Devils where the number 10 overall pick can be involved so there that’s one of the latest options you know if you’re a hurricanes fan you really don’t want to see Martin niches in the in the Eastern Conference let alone you don’t want to see him in division because you’re going to face him a lot but let’s just say for the sake of argument that the Hurricanes do get the 10th overall pick and course they’ve also expressly want a player to come back to like an HL already player so I’m curious to see what kind of trade that would look like where you’re you know if you’re New Jersey Devils you’re getting martines but who are you giving up along with your draft pick that the Hurricanes would want along with 10 and then what’s hurricane where do Carolina also have to give up with Martin EES to get said you know an already player in the 10th overall well let’s just say for the sake of they somehow pull the tradeoff and they do get the 10th overall and maybe the 27th is also part of the part of it as well where the devils are moving back a bunch of spots and maybe they get the may get the Hurricanes 27 and maybe the third or the fourth or maybe one of the sixes let’s just see if that how it works out you know you’re looking at maybe Cole Eiserman you know the left Winger from the US national development team if he makes it there Berkeley katton from the Spokan Chiefs you know you look at Anton salv from HK sarov if you want to go that far uh Becka cica from aswa the right winger you know car uh Kem Chuck from the Calgary Hitman uh con helus from du ukit so I mean there’s a lot of there’s a lot of possibilities around 10 if you want to look at somewhere around there um if you want to get crazy there’s also Adam urick from the from pant uh at the right you know uh right you know defense it’s just or maybe Michael uh bredig niggard from the shl so there’s a lot of options at 10 if the Hurricanes do somehow find a way to go get the 10th overall pick get from New Jersey they get a player that’s ready now and maybe they throw in their first and a couple other picks later on that’s kind of one of the rumored trade destinations for Martin nichu recently because it’s somehow it’s been really picking up as of late where the hurricanes are probably getting somewhere in the top 10 for Martin NES so that’s one of the options that’s come out recently from Frank zvy now another one that has been very very interesting and that’s coming out recently and this one was from Elliot Freeman on the latest 32 thoughts podcast he suggesting that Carolina could be interested in the fourth overall pick held by the Columbus Blue Jack and son and Don woodell and a possible Martin n’s trade and Cory lalette from you know the athletic and pointed out like if this works out you’re looking at a like at the you’re looking at the how the of Any Given Sunday played out if you haven’t seen it go watch it and you’ll get the reference so let’s just say there’s some weird some wild way that D wadell leaves and then he trades Carolina the fourth overall pick and then Columbus gets Martin niches and it’s like okay well he’s still he’s still in the division but you’re on the but you’re on the club as blue Jacks but somehow let’s like I said let’s say the 27th is involved Martin niches is involved a few other picks are involved as well well cuz I would assume it would be a really a high asking price to go from you’re going to be at 27 to go to four in the draft I should say by some crazy miracle and some crazy NHL hockey God Voodoo that happens now you’re at the fourth overall pick and let’s say m celb is gone I Ivan deav is gone and Aram Lees now’s gone now you’re looking at possibly Kaden Lindstrom from the me and tiger hat hat tigers from you know the WHL Ti ginla from the kiloa Rockets you know son of Jerome M the Calgary Flames Legend Zan Perth from the sagonos spirit Sam Dickinson the teammate of Sam O’Reilly and Sam Dickinson supposed to be a really really good defenseman um he’s a good possibility if you want to go there as well you know Zev bonam from the uh University of de’s a left hand so I’m curious to see if they go left hand and then you’re kind of going back into what we were talking about earlier with with around the 10th overall pick and that rumored trade but I mean either way you’re looking at Kean Lindstrom TI ginla Sam Dickinson Zan perek they’re usually projected between the fourth and seven so I mean any one of those guys you can go after that’d be a huge G as well for the Carolina hurricane so let’s say they do move up to the move up to four and you have one of those four guys that could be available now you’re looking at you’re going from okay you’re at 27 you’re kind of getting someone who’s like Fringe in round one early round two you can get 27 to where okay you’re going into the top 10 where you’re G to get someone who’s projected pretty good in their NHL career hopefully and that’s with New Jersey but now if you’re going to the fourth overall pick now you’re really getting into the very high-end prospects you’re talking about guys who have a really legitimate shot making some good ANL C and conf fitting in with the team and then with that who do the Hurricanes go for like I said you got Lindstrom from medison hat you got igler from Canoa you got zann Pere from sagon Sam Dickinson from London so you’re talking at least a good couple good for really good for it’s a couple good defenseman couple guys that could really fit well and from what I’ve heard about IG ginla at least you know he plays like his dad did and if he plays anything like like three four or even half of what his dad did then yeah you’re going to get a player at Edge Sam Dickinson was a really good defenseman of course a lot of people think okay well is that because it’s him that’s good or is it the London Knights either way those won’t be bad either but Ken Lindstrom is supposed to be a really good highend Ford for medicon hat so it’ll be very interesting to see how that works out if the Hurricanes do get to that I would suspect it’s going to be a Blow Me Away trade if the Hurricanes get to the number four with the Blue Jackets like I said it’s probably be a lot more than just niches and some picks I’m curious to see if there going to be a prospect somewh involved in there too so it’s just are the Hurricanes okay with doing that so I guess we’ll see and then the last kind of the biggest rumor from what I’ve heard and seen is the fact that the hurricanes are getting closer to possibly bringing back Jake gensel in the terms of the fact that it’s a you know are they getting closer to the numbering ones Eric tski said that they’re pretty much close and they’re still working on it and you know all indications you know it’s going everyone’s thinking it’s going to be over eight and a half maybe nine if the hurricanes are willing to go do that then there you go because you’re not bringing back Martin E if you’re going to trade him and you’re keeping Jake gensel you know throw him all that money there you go now you run away with it so it’ll be very interesting to see what’s possible in terms of that if tolsky and them get done great then you just got your top left wing you got your number one left Winger for next season you put him back with AO you throw Seth charvis back on that right side like how we saw them for pretty much all of the you know the last few games of the regular season where was those three together and then you have you know whoever your 2C is along with Andre fov and whoever your other Winger is but if you get Jake gel back you got G if you got gensel AO Jarvis there you go you have a really solid Top Line so that’s kind of the other really huge rumor outside of that is it’ll be very interesting to see what happens with you know if Jay GLE does get signed because they’re seeing a l L of it’s going to happen at the draft on draft day so we’ll see it g be a very busy Friday for the Carolina Hurricanes for sure so that’s it for pretty much the rumors the only other thing we got really got to talk about real quick is the four nations in the allw team have we had two Carolina Hurricanes make those respective uh you know announcements and we’ll get to that here in a second on a Friday edition of locked on hurricans all right guys we got to talk about fiand doel and you know me I love sports and I love them so much I never want them to stop especially hockey but unfortunately we the Stanley Cup is over now we’re looking at the draft and all that stuff but there are some other sports going on and that is it’s you know it may not be as sporting as much as I or you or anyone else wants them to but we do have some sports going on at least with baseball Golf and all that but the good thing is with FanDuel it lets me keep the sports going whenever I want and also whenever you want as well all I have to do is open the and dream up bets anytime I’m in the mood in this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a partner of Major League [Music] Baseball welcome back to a segment three of locked on hurricanes your team every day so it was announced um earlier on Friday morning uh that the four nations rosters have been kind of announced we’re talking at least with Team Sweden and team Finland congratulations all the guys on Sweden the one that we’re mainly going to focus about right now is the team finland’s foreign Nations because of Caroline hurricane made that list and it comes to shock to nobody that it’s Sebastian AO obviously it makes sense you know led the team in points this past year he’s you know the qu essential you know like Superstar of the Carolina Hurricanes so only makes sense that Sebastian AO would be one of the six guys going to the for nation you know for next season you know during the you know not so much All-Star break anymore because there is no All-Star game next season so it’s the four nations Faceoff and you know it’s Finland Sweden USA and Canada and like I said Sebastiano was named for team Finland also named it’s just the first six guys they will’ll get to the rest of the rosters later on but they want to get the first six names out so with AO you got go tender UC Saros ESS of the natural Predators you got Essa Lindell and my Miro hinan of the Dallas Stars you got Alexander barov the now stany Cup winning first finish born Captain to win a stany cup Alexander barov and then you got moo Ranson of the Colorado Avalanche those are your first six Nam that were named for team Finland in the four nations Faceoff so congratulations to them for getting in big congratulations Sebastian AO obviously well deserved he it was a no doubter that he was should have been there regardless and all that stuff so congrats to him for making it and the other announcement was the 2023 24 NH a rookie team was included and there was three unanimous selections uh one of them was Conor Bard Brock Faber in Luke Hughes Bard from the Chicago Blackhawks Brock Faber of the Minnesota Wild and then Luke Hughes and the New Jersey Devils now the other guys that were uh put on the all rookie team was Logan kie of the Arizona former Arizona Coyotes now Utah Hockey Club and Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild and the goenda to see that this guy was placed on the NHL rookie team and deservingly so and is p kov of the Carolina Hurricanes without a doubt a slam dunk answer if you’re looking at the fact of who should be on the you know at least the all rookie team and for the fact that it’s Pier K of Being for the go endings go Hunters it makes sense and it’s deservingly so you know 23 wins 13 losses four overtime losses for p 233 goals against average a 911 save percentage he had four shutouts this past season for the Carolina Hurricanes so big congratulations to him on making the AHL all rookie team at the award ceremony like said well deserved congratulations him awesome job for be able to do that and once again awesome job for Sebastian AO to be named to the team Finland four nations challenge for next season so that’s includes all of that with just how you know that all Shake That Shook out with the four nations in the the NHL all rookie team so overall you know quick recap of the draft you know where everyone’s going to be the Hurricanes going to be drafting for the first seven the seven rounds with six three uh with three six rounders and then with the fact that on you know TV tonight it’s G to be 7M Eastern on ESPN and then tomorrow on Saturday it’s G to be ESPN plus and that starts at 11:30 with rounds 2 through 7 like I said with all the rumors going on I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Martin E’s move today it’s just who who the hurricanes are going to give up or what if it’s going to be draft picks and yeah and where is he going to be going so be very interesting and then hopefully the Jay gensel situation hopefully Carolina figures it out and they bring him back for next you know for the next seven eight seasons and then you know you kind of got your top line set up for the next while now with Sebastian an’s long contract and then you know figuring what Seth Jarvis is going to be so be very it’ be a very interesting Friday for the Carolina Hurricanes very busy for sure with all the rumors the fact that it’s day one of the draft and of course we’re not too far away from the start of free agency which is on next Monday so A lot’s GNA be going on over the next few days for the Carolina Hurricanes but let me know what you think do you think the hurricane should move up to the you know the fourth overall or the 10th overall and do you see you know who who would you want them to draft if they got one of those selections or do you see them kind staying put at 27 and it’s just maybe going somewhere else that’s maybe picks later on in the draft or in another year so let me know what you think of possibly 10 to New Jersey or four with the uh Columbus Blue Jacks and then you know let me know what you think about hopefully you know the Hurricanes getting jig gentel back because that would be huge news if they do so but that will wrap up a Friday edition of lock on hurricanes you know very jam-packed with you know talking about the NHL draft what we’re previewing the fact of where the hurricanes are be picking at the latest rumors that the hurricanes have been in you know involving some draft picks especially in this one in the first round and then of course talked about AO and Co coov with the four nations and the all rookie team if you want to keep up with everything that’s
