co-host of the puck podcast a weekly NHL review show that’s been putting out content for the past 17 years and a passionate la fan for over 30 years the NHL held their first round of the 2024 entry draft in Las Vegas on Friday and the Kings for the first time in a couple years had a first round selection now the Kings started the day with the 21st overall pick but they ended up with the 26th pick thanks to a draft day trade with the Montreal Canadians La gave Montreal that 21st selection in exchange they got the 26th pick in the first round as well as an additional second round pick which they did not have before uh the 57th overall pick and an additional seventh round pick the 198th overall selection so the Kings started the day with four picks they end the day with six and they move back five spots in the first round of the draft now on the uh first day of the draft the Kings uh were able to select 18-year-old right- Winger Liam greenre he’s from the Windor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League he’s 6’2 190 lbs was Captain of his team in Windsor he had 36 goals 54 assists for 90 points in 64 games last season he was tied for 11th in the Ontario hockey league in points and also tied for 11th in goals and assists and he also represented Canada in the World Junior Championships where he had two goals and two assists for four points in seven games on being selected by the Los Angeles kings in the first round Liam greenre said quote uh it’s a pretty cool moment for me especially for me and my family I don’t think it’s really set in yet hearing my name is something I’m going to remember the rest of my life good to get it out of the way and take some deep breaths now I kind of knew that they the Kings liked me and they were interested Green Tree commented on what type of player he is he said quote I think I’m a power forward drive the net and win battles and I think I have a little bit of finesse to my game as well I can stick candle in tight areas and I think have a really good shot that can be deployed end quote uh on what he needs to work on and improve on as he develops his hockey game he said quote for me my skating is a big thing that’s something that I’ve already started to work on and I’m going to continue to work on it for sure end quote so some quotes from the latest Los Angeles Kings draft pick first round pick forward Liam greenre uh Rob Blake said on the king’s strategy to move back in the draft quote coming into the day part The Talk this morning was moving back to a different selection players they had targeted they felt that we could move back and gain some value and still be able to be in the range of the player they wanted as it turns out Liam was available end quote now if you’ve heard any of the interviews with King’s longtime director of amateur scouting Mark yti uh he has never made it a secret that he is always looking to move back in the draft if possible and acquire other picks um now he puts players into group and tears and generally if they’re about the same level then he’s going to definitely look to move back and gain assets so uh for example let’s say that he had a tier of players that were in the 20 to 30 range of course the kings were picking 21st originally so if you felt like that group of players were pretty much about the same skill set that anybody they picked within that range of players was going to be an asset then there’s no reason to stay at 21 if you can slide back a few spots and get an extra pick so apparently that was the case for the LA Kings thanks to the Montreal Canadians they were able to stay within their tier move from 21 to 26 and they still felt that they would get a player that they coveted and uh apparently that was the case now it did get a little bit dicey when we were all watching this at least for me and I think some other kings fans as well there was a particular player that I and a lot of Kings fans were targeting that was defenseman stanan soberg who is from Norway and he’s known as being a big nasty defenseman and the Kings haven’t had one of those kind of guys uh in a while really has frankly a mean streak and is a is also a good player it’s not just about his attitude but he brings that to the game and well he was available at number 21 he would end up not being available at number 26 because the Anaheim Ducks made a trade to move up and take him at number 23 so I and a lot of King spel like oh no we moved back we could have had this guy at 21 and Here Come the Ducks and take him out from under us however La was still able to get a player they coveted in Liam greenre he’s was ranked as high as 15th by Elite prospects on the hockey news is Ryan Kennedy had him at 15th as well I I think in the end the Kings did get a player that they were very high on I think in the end the Kings felt like they were able to to get a really good player in the same area that that they could have gotten another player and in the end they get the extra second round pick and the additional seventh round pick but the second round pick was the big thing so in the end I really think that the move did pay off for the LA Kings now what are draft analysts saying about Liam greenre well I picked out a few and I had to start with our own guy here on the locked on network and that was our draft analyst Heidi kakes who has been guest on this show we hope we’ll have him on in the near future to talk about Liam green tree and the rest of the draft picks of the LA Kings but he said about Liam green tree quote green tree is a great shooter with amazing hands he can dice through defenses uh as well as have amazing reads in his game and his hockey sense just got better and better as the year went along he unlocked the playmaking side of his game that wasn’t there he really showed how complete of a player he is good defensive reads and positioning his skating is the big reason why he landed out side of the top 10 but if he lands on the on a top team that could turn him into the next Tyler tley which is certainly interesting if you’re an LA Kings fan so he thinks this guy could be as good as Tyler Tooley someday perhaps uh tsn’s Craig Button had to say about Liam greenre quote he has a lot of different attributes he’s big he’s powerful he’s skilled he’s assertive he’s competitive he knows he can impact a game in a lot of different ways with his style uh that his game has those types of big skilled powerful Wingers that are going to drive the play and make things happen for your team are always valuable end quote an Tony Ferrari of the hockey news said about green tree quote his skating specifically his acceleration Remains the biggest flaw in his game but he’s so intelligent with how he uses his frame and his Puck skills that it doesn’t really impede him he uses teammates extremely well finding the outlet when space doesn’t close on him and then working to get himself at the position to receive a return pass end quote so those are what uh some people are saying about Liam Green Tree again um I love the pick uh I think in the end the Kings made the right move it got a little bit dicey there uh for a while there but Green Tree was still available to him at number 26 um the kings were looking to uh if if they couldn’t add the defenseman looking to add a Winger uh that can be an impact player and again everything I’ve heard about this guy is that uh other than his skating he’s got everything else and skating is something you certainly can work on and I mean they said Luke robai was a pretty bad skater as well and he parlayed that into being a Hall of Famer and one of the highest scoring Wingers in the history of the NHL so I like the pick I like the move the Kings made to get some extra assets as well I think it was a very good day for the LA Kings Day one of the NHL entry draft hopefully the rest of the weekend uh the remaining rounds on Saturday can be as good as well and if you want to see Liam greenre in action apparently he will be at the Kings development Camp which starts this Monday 9:30 a.m. at the Toyota sports performance center in elsta gundo so uh if you’re able to get out there you could see the King’s new number one pick in a king’s uniform skating around the ice there in elag gundo and that’ll be very exciting to check out and uh again hopefully we’ll have more good news to talk about with the LA Kings remaining draft uh coming up on our Monday show but this is a Friday show and as you know that means is a Kings fan feedback show and we’ll get to that next here on locktown Kings your team every day drive passion and patience what brings home the winning trophy is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything you need to as far as the order in which they were received and they may have been edited a bit for time purposes so I appreciate your uh understanding with that our first email comes from Garry he is in court Delane Idaho and he says I wanted to give my thoughts on who might make the big Club from our prospects I think Brant Clark is a given I also believe that turot Thomas and fogy mo will be on the open open day roster the Dark Horse is Andre Lee the Kings need more size and he played well down the stretch for Ontario thanks for keeping the daily lock on King show I listen to on the podcast sometimes and also watch on YouTube go Kings go and that was Gary in Idaho and uh yeah there’s no there’s no shame in double dipping or you know whatever suits your needs if you’re driving in the car and you need to listen to the podcast it’s there for you and if you have time to sit at your computer at work or or at home you want to watch the YouTube channel it’s there for you for you too we appreciate uh all of our listeners and our viewers uh to both and and or either whatever you whatever you need um yeah I think we we talked about this um with Russell Morgan on Wednesday’s show as well and I’m kind of in line with him and I’m kind of in line with you Gary um I think Clark is a given I think turot and Thomas uh Alex turkot and Nill Thomas I think they’re going to be there as well Samuel Fogo is the one and Russell Morgan agreed not sure about him H hopefully he can have a good showing in the preseason and uh get an opportunity because I think he certainly has some skills that if he can you know get it going at the NHL level could really be an asset for the other kings Andre Lee I I agree with you I think Andre Lee is a dark horse uh you’re right he’s got good size and he played well down the stretch for the Ontario Reign so that’s is a guy to keep an eye on uh as possibly a bottom six uh forward for the LA Kings come next season uh Jeremiah in Hawthorne checks in he says I see that the kings are interested in Jake gensel Jake zooker and Jacob Chan do you think Rob Blake is thinking about any of these names um well i’ I’ve heard Jake kensel as well and you’re talking about one of the top unrestricted free agents available so there’s going to be a lot of demand for him and the Kings if they are interested in him will have some stiff competition I think that the big names in free agency gensel Stephen stampco so I know we’re going to mention later with some emails um Sam Reinhardt uh I think Jonathan marcheso I I don’t know that the kings are going to be in competition for any of those those guys those are the top of the top but I think there’s certainly some I look I’ve said Tyler T Foley and I know there’s some sentimentality there as well but he’s I think a guy who’s maybe on that second tier who could still be a really big asset for the Kings obviously would be I think a big hit with the fan base as well and let’s be honest Rob Blake is looking to do anything he can to try and get on the good side of Kings fans but it makes sense from a hockey standpoint as well it’s not just about good PR but we’ll see um you know there’s there’s there’s certainly uh optimism that maybe the Kings will try and take a big swing again uh that would be interesting after that big swing and Miss with Pier luk dubba but we shall see Jason zooker that’s a guy the Kings could bring in a veteran guy he’ll give you 15 to 20 goals he can play Wing uh on the third line that’s a possibility and I mean Jacob Chan one of the first shows I ever did was about Jacob Chan and we’ve heard his name so often with the Kings it seems seems like eventually at some point it has to happen but he’s not a UFA by the way he’s not you know like these other guys that we’re talking about he’s still under contract next season for Ottawa and he’s got a limited trade clause no trade clause um so the Kings would have to give up something to get him from Ottawa and then he’s on the final year of a a deal that pays him 4.6 million so then you got to resign him as well is he willing to resign what’s it going to take to resign him so it’s obviously more complicated uh potentially for bringing in a Jacob Cher than it would be for signing an unrestricted free agent our next email comes from Mike Lopez and he is in Bermuda Dunes and he says I want to voice my thoughts on some perspective on what the plan might have been with Pierre Luke duah I believe the plan was to have him play come in and play the second Center position until he could earn the number one Center Spot and allow Kopitar to get a reprieve um that he needs over the next few seasons the problem PL didn’t earn the 2C according to Tom McCullen and wasn’t going to be given it if do know deserve the spot they did move him around a bit I remember two things when they tried him on the same line as copi I remember a comment that they were going to do this uh G going to do the same areas and it wasn’t going to work uh one other thing I remember was plld really pushing himself until a certain game where he was crashed into the net uh when he went hard lost his footing uh had a lower body injury and never seemed to be the same after that I thought he would come back hard after Hiller took the Reigns and maybe it was McCullen but no that wasn’t the issue I will tell you I was roooting for him to find an extra gear even into the playoffs but I would watch and his play was filled with half attempts soft passes and being in the wrong place at the wrong time I wish him well which is a nice way of saying I’m glad he’s not on our team anymore that that is one thing I am still concerned about when it comes to Rob Blake and and Jim Hiller and I got to believe it was part of what was addressed um it seemed like there must have been some kind of Disconnect between Rob Blake and Todd mclen as far as how they were going to use jeruk dub and look the the general manager is in charge here but usually how it works is the GM supplies the ingredients and the coach does the cooking right the he he supplies all the parts and then when it’s said and done though it’s the coach that implements those parts into the game plan but you still have to have some kind of connectivity between the two uh you you know Ro Blake has to go to Tom mlen right and say listen I’m thinking about getting this player how do you think he fits in and how would you use him you have to have that conversation and if Tom mclen says I think this guy stinks and I don’t think he fits in on our team then you have to have either a discussion about replacing your coach or you have to order him to use the player in a certain way or I mean you can’t just bring the guy in and have wishful thinking and say well you know you’re the coach you figure it out you can’t invest 8.5 million a year in a guy that you play on your third line it doesn’t work like that and I understand the argument that he didn’t earn the position over a guy like a Philip do know who you know you’re gonna what you’re G to get from night and9 out but again you can’t make that investment in a player if he’s not going to be used the right way and then he you know he’s not used the right way and then he compounds it by not giving you the effort that he needs so and again I’m not not necessarily saying it’s all on the coaching or it’s all on how he was utilized I don’t think it helped and it just I don’t know if there was a clear plan why wasn’t it followed and if there wasn’t a clear plan why wasn’t there so it’s all it’s all water under the bridge now and I’m glad we don’t have to worry about it but again um you know there obviously there’s going to be other players that are going to be brought in and now that Tom mcan’s gone it’s going to be Jim Hiller I have to assume the conversation with Jim Hiller was like you know we need to be on the same page as far as how I’m going to bring in players and how you’re going to utilize them and and what’s the best way to do that so hopefully that’s been cleared up with you know what the situation is going forward uh the next uh email comes from Dave and he’s in Seattle Washington he says I think the team needs some size all the focus on speed and skill in the last few years has taken the team down a few notches on the compete scale I’m glad they were able to trade plld I feel like a huge relief but the Darcy keer contract isn’t exactly a bargain either I can’t help but wonder if they’ll be better off resigning talbat and waving keer to free up even more cap space I keep hearing Jake gensel rumors at a at at an expected $9 million cap hit could they even pull that off would they take another big swing for the fences after the plld debacle I think it’s more likely free agent editions would be a Tyler to Foley regarding the draft I hope they pick the best player available and not the not draft for need really feel like there’s another unexpected move coming this off season glad they got rid of the home plate logo wish they would have gone back to the purple and gold but this is the next best option he said I’d still prefer to see the crown logo finally congrats to the Panthers on their first ever Stanley Cup I was definitely rooting for the Oilers to lose more than I was the Panthers to win but congrats either way go Kings go and that was from Dave in Seattle yeah I I I think we’re kind of on the same page there Dave again you mentioned Tyler defley I think that would be uh one of the better additions the Kings could likely make that I think is realistic um you know I’ve been on the record since the trade de headline of last season to bring in Tyler to Foley unfortunately that didn’t happen um I would be surprised if the Kings put Darcy keer on waivers and uh and resigned cam Talbot um you know his contract you’re right isn’t great um but the kings are paying what around $6 million for their two goenda amount um I do think the kings are looking to add another veteran goalie to be some insurance and be the backup to Eric Portillo and Ontario don’t think that’ll be camt but I think he’s going to be in demand maybe it’s Fenix Copley if everything goes well with his knee issue um and I do think Rob Blake you know again in the final year of his contract is looking to get back in the good graces of ownership and fans and uh if he’s able to make a big splash again and take another swing I think he’ll take another swing I don’t think he’s gonna be I don’t think he’s gonna be gunshy31 going into the final year of his contract if he wants to stay as the general manager of the LA Kings we’ve got more emails coming up here on locked on LA Kings your team every day I love sports I love them so much I wish they would long so head over to fanduel.com lockon and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel the official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball our next email comes from Rich and San Pedro who’s literally one of my neighbors he’s a couple blocks away uh he says a few topics and questions one does a team decide to give players the okay to play in the worlds after the season the World Championships I was thinking that if plld would been injured in the tournament there’s no way that trade happens good thing he stayed healthy that’s a great point and I talked about that at the time my greatest fear when these guys go over and play in that tournament is some sort of injury thank God in hindsight Pier Luke du stayed healthy that’s a great Point um to answer your question though I I think I don’t think they have to ask permission I think I don’t think that if they go and play I don’t think that the teams can find them for doing that but I think it’s kind of a professional courtesy to tell your team hey I want to go play in this in this event um do I have your blessing and the Kings will probably say Yes um that’s my understanding anyway uh he says as far as the final I’m with you I was happy the Panthers won my reasons got to hate the withers are now a legit division rival after eliminating us three straight years I hate their fans they think they’re so entitled and they’re very cocky always blaming the refs for their shortcomings and most importantly it keeps Cory Perry’s curse alive I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that hates him he says I love the new jerseys is there any way you can let us fans know 100% if we commit to paying almost $500 for an authentic jersey or even a replica that we are not going to get the stupid Insurance logo on the chest no way I’m buying a new jersey with that logo I know teamla stores were selling the home plate jersey with it um last year uh well Rich my understanding is that if you’re G to get an authentic jersey then the Mercury Insurance patch is a part of that I guess you could remove it maybe somehow but um yeah I’m with yeah I don’t I don’t like the ads on the jerseys if you’re going to do it that’s fine but the fans shouldn’t have to have them as well but I it must come with with the sponsorship agreement that they signed with Mercury Insurance that part of the deal was the patch had to be on the authentic jerseys that the fans would buy I think you might be able to get a replica without I think but I’m not even positive about that but I’m almost positive that the authentic jerseys will come with the advertisement on them uh our next email comes from Jim and Lakewood he says I want to tip my hat to the hockey fans in LA and of the LA Kings in particular being from Massachusetts I came here with a snobs view of this place but after 27 years here I feel like this place has every much of a right to be called itself a hockey uh country uh hockey fans here are unique not as passionate as other states in some areas but as loyal as the people in those States for sure we love our game our team and we know how much our team means to us we also know we have the greatest game in the world and feel like a little like it’s a secret that we have this game glad not everyone is in on the secret I would like to give a shout out to my wife fared she is not like me she is from here and didn’t grow up loving hockey but once she got into it when we got season tickets she was hooked she’s also up on all the other aspects of the game I admire her love of the of the sport and her team as a matter of fact I would put her up against any East Coast fan she has more passion more attitude more pride and more belief in her players than those guys I’ve seen it she’s a great hockey fan she is LA Kings and only LA Kings to show you how cool she is when we first started going to Kings games one night there was a penalty kill and the kings were do were on and the Kings scored on it and she said it was a power kill I thought it was brilliant how cool is that she came up with a new name for a short-handed goal on the penalty kill I like the the power kill the power kill works I hope we see a lot of power kills uh next season um it’s funny you say you say that I know when I first really got passionate about hockey I tried to convert everybody I knew and a lot of times I got frustrated because they just wouldn’t wouldn’t get on board with with with me with hockey and uh it started to make me a little bit bitter and then I guess I got a little older a little more mature and I said you know what I will do everything I can to promote this Sport and if any of my friends are interested I’d love to help them with it um but I’m done beating my head against the wall trying to tell everybody how great this sport is if you don’t want to watch it and if you’re not interested in giving it a try then that’s on you but if you are interested and you want to know more about it uh I I would love to help you that I when during game seven of the stle cup final one of my co-workers who’s not a hockey fan was texting me and asking me questions and I was thrilled to be able to text him back and and hopefully you know maybe that’s a little step in getting someone to try something new I a lot of people in in this country in certain parts of the country they don’t want to try new things they feel maybe intimidated they don’t know the rules they don’t want to look stupid because they don’t know they don’t want to ask questions so um that’s unfortunate but you know it’s awesome uh jim I’ve met your wife uh she’s a lot of fun and she is definitely very passionate and hopefully we can have that uh locked on Kings watch party at your place next season and then some of our fans can maybe meet her but I there is there’s no bigger thrill than than turning people onto hockey and my wife is an example of that as well she was not a hockey fan when I met her and now she’s a huge LA Kings fan which is awesome our final email comes from Edwin and Brea and he says with free agency the Kings have about 22 million in cap space after the pl trip trade I’m hoping the king sign beld to a bridge deal of 5 million if that happens then we have about 17 million left and I say since management was bold last season do it again for the right kind of player go after Steven stanos at the right number of about seven or seven and a half million per season one reason the Kings got bounced out of the playoffs was because that they had a hard time scoring consistent goals kopitar’s passed his Prime fiala and kampe are hot and cold so why not give Stam Co a try he’s a right-handed shot which the Kings need or don’t have any of now he can help the power play he’s also proven winner with two cups if not stamp Coast maybe Jake Gil or or Jonathan Maro would be awesome choices um and also a reunion of Tyler Tooley would be logical if none of the players I mentioned works out and I’m also hoping the kings bring back Alec Martinez to help out our defense with Spence and Clark on the blue line now goal tending is good for now let’s see what happens after the draft in free agency go Kings go always and that is the closer Edwin in Brea who is usually our final email that we read because he’s usually the one who sends the email last uh in the email inbox um well I will say this about stevenh stamco he’s coming off a contract that was paying him 8.5 million a year and I’m pretty sure he’s looking for a raay so uh if he’s gonna take a HomeTown discount it would be for Tampa Bay which apparently he’s not doing all reports are he’s going to test free agency um that would be an amazing thing to have the top two picks in the draft back in the day Drew dowy and Steven stampco on the same team I don’t see it happening I’d love to see it I don’t see it like I said I think a lot of the top tier UFA is gensel Stam Co marcheso Reinhardt I don’t think the Kings have much of a chance with those guys but I do think like I said those those second tier kind of ufas I think a Chandler Stevenson uh Max doy Tyler bruzi Jake de Brusque Tyler to Foley I think those are the guys the Kings probably will be looking to come in to add to the uh the offense and uh in the forward lineup all right thank you to everyone who took the time to email I appreciate it as always this show isn’t possible without your participation so thank you for that um for you every dayers and if by the way if you want to get an email in for a future show lockon Eddy gmail.com is the 1. I really like the idea of Stamkos. Guy scored 40 goals last season.

He has also made nearly $100 million dollars in career earnings. Do you really think he is motivated by more money for another year or 2?

  2. Solberg was drafted out of the Norwegian league, as weak of a league as it gets. I'm glad the Kings didn't pick him up. He may never acclimate to a higher league. It's a huge step. Greentree is awesome. Captain and power forward. Exactly what the Kings need. I don't know how, but maybe the Kings can swing a deal and get Ryder Ritchie in the 2nd. Having prospects like Greentree, Ziemmer, and possibly Ritchie will make the team competitive and the type of players you need to win instead of these guys in Paddington Bear pajamas.

  3. Hopefully this 1st round pick developes into something productive. Last 20 years kings have only had success with Kopitar, Toffoli, Kempe and recently Byfield as far as frwds go. Seems like kings have to always trade for scoring instead of drafting them. If Turcotte and Thomas don't pan out this season, it will be 2 more players we can add to the long list of subpar frwds kings scouts have been drafting.

  4. At 18 we won’t see him for what. 5 years? Wish they hadn’t gone back to my least favorite logo for uniforms nest season. Going to be hard to watch.

  5. I could see why the Kings decided to trade back because they knew Sacha Boisvert was going to be gone before pick no. 21

I like this pick. Greentree's speed and playing style reminds me a lot of Jeff Carter.
