WHO is Calling Plays for the Chiefs?!

2024 is all about bringing back the Deep ball we’ve heard Andy Reid talk about it Patrick Mahomes talk about it we are seeing a bit more usage of it at the end of 2023 but we know that when it came down to it too many plays were left on the field so the Chiefs are all about bringing that back but what about everything else we’ve got so much more to talk about from an offensive play call perspective from different things that I think Andy Reid can do should do what we all want to see more of so today on rgr football I Daniel harmes lead and Senior film analyst here I’m going to take a look behind the curtain of what Andy Reid and the chief’s offense run on an every down basis and what they should do a little bit more I’m stepping into Andy Reid’s shoes and we’re going to look into things that I would do if I were Andy Reid going back to the playoffs last year and when they started to simplify the offense a little bit we saw how it became more efficient so how can we further diagnose how that’s going to be able to be implemented throughout the 2024 season with new pieces we expect to see more explosive plays how can they build everything else off of that so please if you guys are new to rgr football please hit that sub button right now and allow me to earn a like from you as we get through and dive into the tape here so how would I change things if I were Andy Reid well I’m going to go ahead and talk a little bit about the Gap power scheme team runs specifically how they used them at the end of the season and how they should continue to use them going forward we see here a little bit of single back power from the Chiefs against the bills in the divisional round and when we look at the Chiefs Run game from a whole Andy Reid is a predominantly Zone based offense and through you know weeks one through 17 they ran Gap and power 27% of the time from from 17 to 22 through the Super Bowl they upped it to 43% when they simplified their off offense they also looked at their entire run scheme as a whole and how they could be more impactful and use the players that they have to their best Advantage like Isaiah Peko much better when he’s able to get downhill quickly and not have to cut back find those cutback Lanes so when he can follow blocks let them unfold he’s a much better running back and we saw that at with countless times throughout the end of the season here you’re going to get some blocking down from jwan Taylor as well as Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey Joe tun’s coming in here to block through that outside sea Gap when Travis Kelce comes in here so Isaiah Peko again just going to follow his blocks down get up field as soon as that is allowed as soon as soon as he’s able to so right here you have a nice C Gap widening Travis Kelce getting enough of that block there just to let Pacho make a guy Miss so when we look at the to the totality of the Chiefs running and rushing attack their best plays honestly for both isia peo and now Clyde Edwards aair are power scheme because it allows them to get into those spaces and for a guy like Clyde Edwards aair who best runs at this point are getting downhill quickly we can’t really see him stretching to the outside because he doesn’t have that speed that’s how we’re going to be able to see him be used and more effectively be used along with Isaiah Pacho so here we flash forward to the Super Bowl another single back power out of shotgun because the chief’s offense does run predominantly out of shotgun but you can see them doing all kinds of different things with Jet Sweep motions I would like to see them use a little bit of pin pull and a little bit of Duo things that sea McVey changed who was predominantly an outside Zone run scheme in La he brings this past season with Kiren Williams in their offensive line basically a ton more Gap and a ton more po where they’re able to just dominate offensive line or defensive line so again you get this time we’ve you know we’ve got Nick Alig gry coming downhill to block up Nick Bosa and that’s what this comes down to just let Isaiah Pacho stop read out one Gap he’s getting to and go limit what he’s going to have to do from a Zone perspective get downhill quickly churn out seven eight nine 10 yards and get your offense moving we can feed that directly into the play action game this again is out of not out of shotgun it’s out of under Center but what I love about the Chiefs when they get under Center is that they become a pretty efficient ient and effective pass uh play action team motioning uh you’ve got the motion here from mvs to the right hand side and he’s going to wheel around here up the right hand sideline and this is going to form a saale concept with Travis Kelce um Isaiah Pacho and mvs so typically sail route is the go route on the outside followed with a little corner route from whichever receivers there whichever one’s running at on that right hand side and then a flat route here so it’s a three-level attack and it dissects the defense into those three spots and you find where you’re going to be able to best Implement and best attack it so cover two places that you’ve got spots on the outside and if not if it’s against cover three or things like that you’ve got the flat available so you can get them going and if they just leave you know if they leave the uh go route up you just go ahead and throw it downfield but with this play specifically you’re going to see Travis Kelce attack down in the middle of the field he’s going to get up to that linebacker hesitate for a second and then bend back out this is like the Travis Kelce special in my mind where he’s always bending his routes towards the middle of the field and then breaking out on that corner route you’ve got a little bit of play action here from Isaiah Peko who is going to make it to the flat Rashid rice is going to come underneath and just sit down in the middle of the field and then on the opposite side you’ve got Noah gray going to do what he does best again chip helping and then just releasing and curling as a backside receiver just in case so this is a fantastic throw it’s a great timing throw and obviously Travis Kel does a fantastic job of catching it but right here he makes it look a little bit like he’s blocking and then you got eyes from the defense right on one and two here so that’s going to naturally create space over here with this Defender having to keep going up field because MBs is going to draw that so you’ve got two high safeties you’re able to then you know attack in the intermediate parts of the field because they can’t get there quickly enough so you have all of that there once again it’s a very nice throw from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce on a spot in between those Defenders so we saw space underneath really start to slim down for the Chiefs because of the inability to attack downfield so if we’re talking about Andy Reed wants to bring the B the Deep ball back I want to use more play action from under Center I think that they can really attack defenses especially with the way they utilize 12 and 13 Personnel packages against anybody you can really do a lot of of fun things like this where the Chiefs bring out Full House package it’s the it’s a different Personnel you’ve got two wide receivers two tight ends on the field and a running back so it’s a different way to utilize that 12 Personnel make it look a little bit different and we also got to see Travis Kelce attacking downfield out of that HB roll so when you bring out this Full House formation you get more I guess it’s almost like you bring out a base package of their defense and then you can still attack so imagine you know Noah gray is Jared Wy Jared Wy is is a faster a bigger athlete and that brings more more substantiation to your your passing attack downfield so with Travis Kelce running this almost like a corner route once again you’re going to have him just kind of release up and then run out to the the corner you’ve also got another flat route here combined with a deep kind of in breing and then Corner route so it’s like a sale variation like we just saw attacking those three levels on the right hand side but you can do so much out of this and I just love what they’re able to do you get a little bit of Chip help here released to the flat and then really Rashid rice does a a very nice job here of releasing inside attacking outside vertical and then getting to that corner where he’s he’s open so at the end of the day this just becomes another one of those intermediate deep plays that the chiefs were able to create because they were unable to really attack downfield so you have to get a little creative with the ways that you can do that so if you run play action you know out of shotgun out of pistol out of Full House whatever it is I do think that they can really attack defenses in a better way a more efficient way with the power the power Run game tied to more of those passing Concepts if you run some counter you know out of under Center and get some of those going you can really make it more effective we know you don’t have to run the ball effectively to make play action effective but it makes it that much more effective when you’re a successful run run game and at least least you’re efficient because then you have to respect it a lot more as a defense when it comes down to it so looking at the Chiefs offense of a few years ago right when they had Travis Kelce Tyreek Hill and they ran those three by1 formations Travis Kelce was that man outside that one on that one side usually they have three on the left or and one on the right he’s usually that that isolated receiver on the opposite side of those three receivers this last year Travis Kelce was not utilizing that as much the number one receiver that they lined up as the isolated player was Justin Watson that doesn’t help your offense a ton you have to be able to attack and that’s why they they isolated him out there and used Travis Kelce in the in the bunch formation or however many receivers they had to try to help the left or the three receivers get get a little bit more open so he would bring some attention to them and let them get open so the return of putting Travis Kelce as the one player with the combination of the deep ball I think can really bring back more of that explosivity from the chief’s offense that we saw right here yes this is probably a ball that should not excuse me should not have been thrown by Patrick Mahomes but we’re going to see exactly why it ends up working out for the future process because they’re out here again in 12 personnel with Noah gray on the field and Travis Kelce and Kelsey is going to do what he’s been doing he’s going to release again inside deal with some press some physicality get to his Corner route You’ve Got U micole Hardman who’s going to run this vertical give a little bit of fake to the outside and then come across the formation on that deep post route a deep kind of like a double move so corner post where he’s attacking deep down the right hand side of the middle of the field out route here from mvs and then just a little bit of help from Noah Gray he’s blocking down here with the play action for Isaiah Pacho who’s going to run out here get up field and Patrick’s going to take a little bit of a bootleg out to the left so we’re seeing all these different moving parts and when you’re putting a defense that’s currently shifting right they’re going to shift number 31 down um back up here he’s he comes down initially but watch what the defense has to do here so you get outside he’s moving to that outside having to take responsibility for the deep leftand side of the field and number 31 realizes well okay there’s probably going to be some movement from mle Hardman as we see he’s going to get down here in the middle of the field that puts them into conflict you’re creating conflict with deep speed also you’re creating space so the Chiefs did play action they move Patrick Mahomes out of the pocket out to his left where he’s into space where he’s got time and they want to launch this ball down the field but what ends up happening is Travis kelse is going to leave the V or enter that vacated area from number 31 because he has to worry about that deep part of the field if you consistently have to do that if you consistently can create those deep plays by bringing the Deep ball back and attacking with Xavier wory and Hollywood Brown consistently and effectively that’s the most important part is the effectiveness of the deep ball game you can create this which the Chiefs desperately desperately needed because Travis Kel is wide open make his life a little bit easier and a lot of things will come to fruition for your offense and be much more effective in the long run so Patrick throws this ball because he’s trying to make something happen in a game where they’re down and they’re struggling to score they’re struggling to move the ball pays off and they’re able to then unfortunately make a play in the Red Zone where that gets fumbled but the space creation is what you’re going for here so plays like this that end up happening because of that 3×1 odity that used to be last year I believe Travis Kelsey only had a couple of regular season where he was the isolated receiver on that right on that side this is what we usually saw with Travis Kelce here on the three receiver side this time you’ve got Rashid rice and they’re running your crossers on third down so you’ve got Rashid rice who’s going to be the receiver underneath trying to get open and they use Travis Kelce here more of that rub route so your receiver or your DB is on you I’m going to take over and I’m going to rub off of that and you’ve got Rashid rice coming across the field trying to get underneath Travis Kelce here so he releases inside over that linebacker that’s dropping in and this is how they tried to use Travis Kelce to get other players open because of the attention you know we know that Travis Kelce draws a ton of gravity so that’s really what the the 3×1 formations have been last year going forward with more speed more deep shots and really more hopefully more effective wide receiver play you can start isolating him as that third receiver or exuse me as that number one receiver on that side and be able to trust the other guys to get open one other thing that I would really do if I was Andy Reid is play more empty offense sets I don’t necessarily care about Personnel but attack defenses spread them out wide they didn’t use them a ton they were near 20th the bottom half of the league in empty usage but in 3 by two formations with three receivers to the left and two to the right they were ninth in EPA per play so they had a positive expected points added per play again it was top 10 in the NFL this is something that they do need to add more in their skill set and in their tool bag because I do believe giving Patrick Mahomes easy answers to any test is always the thing you want to do so they are going to just going to run the front side here the three receiver side you’re going to run two Slants and an in two Slants right there with Travis Kelce on the opposite side running his out route with a go route from mvs so again it gives you easy answers to the test because you’ve got off coverage here nobody wants to get beat down the field they want to get they want to have to give you the opportunity to throw the ball underneath and so right there boom you’ve got guys backing up already because you have speed to the outside and Isaiah Peko in the right spot being able to catch the football there he’s shown to be a very reliable receiver so let him do some things in the passing game let Claud ERS air who you had expecting to play wide receiver in the Super Bowl two years ago be out there as receivers give your quarterback easy escapable options to where def def is again if they’re going to put those two safeties up there attack them underneath force them to come down a little bit with that power game we talked about with a little bit of play action and then spreading them out and form forcing defenses to give you again more of those answers here we got some more three by one with Travis Kelce off the field and Noah gray taking his spot on that right hand side they still are able to get Justin Watson wide open over the middle of the field here he drops the football yes it’s a little bit located behind him but again we’re we’re seeing some of this pirate concept on the left hand side we’ve talked about this in the past where you have the deep in route with an underneath in route so you have those two those two routes attacking different levels of the field also known as you know high low concept with mvs they just I mean not really sure what he’s doing he gets kind of taken out of this play anyway but you can also get creative with it so he’s Isaiah pcho is going to motion down and then he’s just going to run run out to the flat here you’ve got a little whip route from Noah gray but you want to create that conflict with motion right they can do that they can run the ball they can do jet sweeps out of it all that all that interesting stuff but you create conflict on this side right and it makes it so your players can’t get into that depth so you got guys moving around here trying to figure out where they’re all going and then Justin Watson again comes around you got number 31 dropping out into this open space exactly what you want you get the player that you’re trying to get open in that area with that thir level or that deeper level concept fortunately he drops the ball so obviously not everything is always going to be one for one you can do it but I think with using more empty sets a for for this Chief’s offense with the players that they have you can continue to add quality reps and quality easy options to your offense that continue to keep them you know on the front page or as they say beh in front of the chains not behind the sticks so the very last thing that would do more of if I was Andy Reid is go for it on fourth down again they were bottom uh bottom half of the league in going for it on fourth down now there’s going to be some discrepancy with teams that are bad and trying to just go forward on fourth down at the end of football games but in general Andy Reid should probably go for it more often on fourth down we saw them do that in the postseason when they really needed to I think at the end of the day adding plays like this to your playbook just for a sake of argument you know with Travis Kelce once again as that number one player player on the isolated side versus the three receiver set we see how effective it can be and this is getting back to those Basics right they got to have it on Fourth and two and you’re just going to kind of run these players out here on another little pirate concept with the uh he’s not really cair isn’t really running a a screen or an actual route PR say he is more of just trying to get you know trying to get somebody up here and then you run you rotate it back off these are the kinds of things that you can do on those fourth Downs movement pieces moving let Patrick Mahomes have more control of the offense I think that at the end of the day he would be converting a lot more of these fourth Downs you’re going to survive a lot more especially with more um impactful pieces and then I also just wanted an excuse to throw off this uh to throw this throw and catch out there because it’s an incredible throw and even better catch from Travis Kelce extension right there so when we see everything in totality I think last year year highlighted a lot of struggles that the Chiefs have on offense when you don’t have Elite Playmakers everywhere but even when you’re going to have better ones in 2024 again on paper they’re going to have better players using more actual Gap power schemes in your run game if you again look at what the Rams did last year defenses are playing a lot more two high safeties that takes one Defender out of the box you have to maximize that and with Zone specifically those inside Zone plays that the Chiefs run they’re not not as effective in as in the run in the Run game as they are when they go to the Gap and they go to the power so use more more of that 5 53% and 47% Zone to Gap I think would be very good for this offense even the even even though the offensive line has more athletic players you’ve got some real power on the inside whoever’s going to be there so use it to your advantage and got good polers as well and then you can marry that with the play action game because they’ve been a very effective uh passing attack out of under Center they weren’t as much out of 13 Personnel last year it got a little predictive EXC me a little predictable you can do that a little bit more with Jared Wy and having that that that marriage of a a real Run game that threatens it getting back to Travis Kelce being an isolated receiver in three by one sets adding more empties and being more effective out of empty and then just going for the throat more on fourth down when you’re even close to the 50 yard line you have a very good defense you know your offensive score points let Patrick Mahomes have more control of the offense in those situations that’s what I would do if I Daniel harmes were Andy Reid so again I hope you guys enjoyed this breakdown of what I would do in these situations do a little bit more of with the power Run game passing attack these weapons should provide more with the go balls and the Deep the Deep areas of the field that you can access all of these things with relative ease I hope you guys have a great rest of your day and make sure if you’re new to the channel
