NHL Trade Rumours – Could Crosby Leave Pens? Red Wings, Devils, Necas Update, Free Agent Signings
in today’s video we have all the latest rumors around the NHL today we have the latest on the situation involving Marty nature and Carolina Hurricanes we’ll discuss where things stand on that front plus we have the latest rumors around the Detroit Red Wings could Taylor Hall possibly end up back in New Jersey and Sydney Crosby’s got some big decisions to make he’s yet to sign an extension with Pittsburgh is he going to what’s he going to do could he ever leave the Penguins we’re going to discuss the latest information around him as well plus we have some more signings for NHL free of frenzy uh including Jack rosik and Carolina all that plus Hockey Canada has named their head coach for the upcoming World Juniors all that coming up next welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned we have a variety of news and rumors to take a look at here today of course today is July the 4th so I just want to wish all of our American viewers a happy 4th of July I know we celebrated Canada day here in Canada a few days ago always a fun time of year uh it’s always a busy time of year of course as well uh around both of our nation’s uh big days here but we have some more signings to talk about today uh for agent frenzy continues of course we’re in the fourth day of it uh starting to slow down a little bit a lot of players have sign uh next little while we’re going to probably see a lot of extensions for players that are uh eligible and RFA businesses probably about to pick up here soon as well uh so far we’ve seen mostly UFA business which always takes priority first out but we do have a few signings here today which include some rfas as well uh some of which were not going to be qualified but uh some of which ended up getting deals anyways the Sharks uh picked up a couple of players via trade and they’ve got them both signed now they signed Carl grundstrom who came over from the Los Angeles Kings he gets a two-year deal of 1.8 million per season and they sign TI Dria who came over from Dallas he gets a two-year deal as well at 1.3 million so both those players will get twoyear deals to stay with the sharks and have a more of a role than they had with their previous clubs uh the winter jets made a couple of signings as well uh they’re both players who may have NHL roles but may have to spend some time in the American Hockey League as well might be call up options but they’ve signed Mason Shaw uh formerly of Minnesota oneyear two-way deal and Hayden flurry who was most recently with the Tampa Bay Lightning also gets a one-year two-way deal uh so a couple of uh depth signings there in Winnipeg and then the Carolina Hurricanes today have signed Jack rosik he gets a one-year deal at 2.8 million of course rosik was most recently with his hometown Columbus Blue Jackets for the past couple years get traded to the Rangers at the deadline finished the season out with them became a free agent and now he signs with the Carolina Hurricanes he’s bounced around a little bit of course started his career with the winen peg Jets uh was where he was drafted to and I said after that ended up in in Columbus he went to the jackets with Patrick l and the lon trade of course that’s where he’s from as well so it was kind of one of those things where he was hoping a HomeTown uh return would kind of really accelerate his career and he had his moments where things took off but I guess never really found that higher level of consistency that he was hoping for when the trade first happened and ultimately led to uh him having to to move on uh so we’ll see how things work out for him with the Hurricanes he’ll definitely play a decent role for them in their top nine they’re definitely a different looking team after all the moves that they’ve had to deal with here in free agency as well uh one other contract as well which actually involves a player not returning to the NHL uh is former Blackhawk and more before that Senator and maple Lea Russian player Nikita zv heads back and signs in the KHL so that’s not a big surprise uh of course he ended up getting that 7-year deal from the Toronto Maple leavs after one year in the NHL and things really kind of just slowly went downhill for him from there that contract finally is expired now and um after being on his third team um he heads back to Russia uh Hockey Canada did announce today as well their uh coaching staff including head coach for the upcoming World Junior Championships and it’s Dave Cameron who I think is an excellent choice of course this year’s World Junior Championships will be held in Canada’s capital of Ottawa and that’s where Dave Cameron currently works the head coach of the Ottawa 67s uh former head coach of the Ottawa Senators uh also coached uh overseas for a little while after being let go from the Senators gig he went to I think it was the Flames he was a assistant coach there for a year or two went to Europe for a couple years and then came back and had a chance to get the job with the Ottawa 67 so the Pei native who’s had a pretty pretty solid coaching career former teacher uh is done done pretty well for himself I think this is a great choice especially considering where the uh tournament’s going to be hosted uh his team in Ottawa with the 67s have done uh pretty well here the past couple years and he’s he’s coached this program before as well so certainly deserving of the uh opportunity so good on them to uh make a good choice uh so we’ll see how things go at the r Juniors this year a variety of rumors take a look at here today um said I do want to talk about Sydney Crosby not that we not not coming on here suggesting Crosby’s going to leave Pittsburgh but his name has been out there as far as some speculation of what his future holds from a variety of news outlets so I just want to kind of weigh in say what what’s being said about them out there and um kind of see where things may go as far as the other some other players first I want to talk about Marty NIS in Carolina of course we know that he’s one of the big names that was expected to be trade it and a lot of people thought myself included that the most likely time the prime time for that to go down would be in and around the 2024 NHL draft that you know maybe uh a first round pick might have to be something that’s involved but we knew that the Carolina’s asking price was a similar uh young player that has you know kind of star potential they see nature as an upand cominging star player and they would like uh you know something as close to that as as we can get I guess on a return well that’s has not materialized it’s like well maybe they do have to go a different direction maybe they go with a first round pick and something else maybe it’s another Prospect maybe it’s a first and a second um some other for of future-based compan ation and then maybe they can take that and flip it to another team you know it just kind of depends right on what teams want uh for their potential players that they’re willing to move so hard to say right but at the draft there was some close calls uh the Carolina Hurricanes did hold trade talks with teams like the Buffalo sabes and the Carolina Hurricanes also talked to the Columbus Blue Jackets and of course former hurricanes GM Don woodell who was very interested in we’re nature to Columbus with him um there was some belief that the fourth overall pick was even in play uh the problem was for both of those teams is that NES would not sign the contract uh of course even though he is restricted he does hold uh you know a fair bit of the leverage here because he has to sign a contract and want to play for whatever team acquires him or he can just decide that no I’m not I’m not signing there so it’s made it a bit tough on Carolina um so a lot there’s I mean we’ve heard other teams that were interested at one point we heard New Jersey but I don’t see that happening now um we’ve heard Montreal now Montreal is a team that could maybe still pull that off um it’s really kind of difficult to say where things stand with them I think we were expecting Montreal also to go after a big time young player um you know we’ve seen him get Kirby Doc and Alex new hook the past couple years we’ve heard GM Ken Hughes make comments saying that they were very interested in doing it again and making another type of trade of that nature but I also wonder if if them getting Ivan demidov kind of maybe changed their minds maybe not entirely Chang their minds but it just took away the urgency I guess you could say and just kind of created a situation where they don’t really feel like they need to rush and get that because obviously the the whole point of this draft for Montreal was to use that pick if at all possible being in the top five to get a a top level forward um they’re loaded on defense with prospects so it’s not a secret that uh that wasn’t really something that they wanted to do if they if they really thought there was a defenseman there that was you know really way way better than what they had maybe they do that anyways and move some other D’s out uh for maybe some forward prospects with other teams or something but at the end of the day we knew they were going forward um that was no secret so getting demov though um maybe like I said it just kind of creates a different thing but they could but demov is not going to play immediately right so so doesn’t mean that they can’t make room in this lineup in the next year or two for demov and Nature’s both uh I mean obviously you’ve got Coffield you got Suzuki you’ve got slavoski just signed a big extension so you know those three uh are not going anywhere but you know not everybody’s going to play in your top six you need to pretty you need three lines really that can score one line that can really check well um ideally and you need skilled of some degree in all lines so really I mean then you besides those three besides the Suzuki Coffield Sosi you’ve got Kirby doc you’ve got Alex new hook you got demov now coming who’s one of your better prospects alen Beck’s a good Prospect but to me he’s probably a third liner you get Joshua W hard to say exactly where he slots um so you know you got to make some bets right on who is going to be what you get new hook who you acquired last year so I mean they might be getting to a point where they have uh you know just they’re starting to get a lot of players in the organization and you know are they willing to make bets here or do they think NES is an upgrade because that’s they’re they’re one of the only teams that’s was mentioned and rumored to be in the mix with with Carolina and NES that hasn’t really pulled the trigger yet so I don’t know I mean I guess another option I don’t know if it would be something that they would want to do but I mean we’ve heard a lot about Trevor zis um is a zigris for nature Street something that would Intrigue both sides you know I don’t we haven’t heard that from any connected sources but they’re they’re both players in similar situations that believed to be looking for a potential Fresh Start I mean NES would be um you know cuz we know with Anaheim like they want a different kind of player than what zis is by the looks if they do move them that’s the reason um I don’t know Natures is not exactly somebody who’s a big physical player but he’s definitely has more size and strength than um zigris does and could you know probably adap playing that way a little bit more so I don’t know maybe not but there’s still a few teams out there but the reason we haven’t seen a trade yet mainly is because of the teams that he wouldn’t sign with so we’ll see where that goes but I I wouldn’t rule out the Ducks wouldn’t rule out Montreal um so we’ll see where all that goes but that’s the latest on him uh the Detroit Red Wings and Steve Eiserman appear like they’ve got a lot of business done but they’re not done completely we could still see another trade I mean to me E’s been a couple of confusing trades with Jake wman or Robbie fabry um I mean I understand they were cost cutting moves but it just seems kind of weird I mean you move Jake wman as a cost cutting move but yet you keep Ben sherro you keep Justin Hall Jeff Petri allly matter you know shot’s probably the best option of all those so I mean especially like Hall and Petri the main two like you would think if you’re going to be doing a cap dump that they would be the names coming out not Walman um and then fabri goes and then they sign tereno is like okay I get that but like I don’t know you know fabry’s Fair bit younger than tereno can be similar productivity the past couple years I mean his injuries has been his story but he’s been better lately for staying healthy so it’s just some odd moves um so it’s just hard to say where things go with heiserman but he did indicate in his cuz he just spoke to the media just in the past day or so and it sounds like he wouldn’t rule out another trade um but he also alluded that they have to take care of their RFA business which is coming next they have 20 million bucks basically in campus space but they got to sign mider they get to sign Lucas Raymond they have to sign Jonathan bergeran they get to sign Joe valino and it’s believed that they’ really want to see Beren compete and grab a roster spot next year if berren doesn’t make the roster and he gets uh they want to send him to the miners again uh then I think that’s going to lead to a trade I think there was speculation last year about Bergin maybe being the move that just kind of frustrated about being looked over for a roster spot if it happens again he’s probably going to want out of there but they got to sign those four players and that’s going to probably eat up all or close to that 20 million so any any more moves would require money and money out uh but said they’ve made lots of moves in the forward group you know they brought back Patrick Keane which was surprising short-term deal but he comes back tereno comes in on our 2-year deal so you got some aging veterans there but that are still productive still good players uh obviously you got de Bret you got Larin um you know Lucas Raymond will come back with an RFA contract that’s hopefully going to be you know long-term Big Ticket um you know what’s the future hold for like Comer he was better than but then Andrew cop’s been a disappointment um you know what else are they going to do in that four group they there’s a lot of spots kind of spoken for there but the back end h i to me that back end does not look great the Las gos is bear um cider is is a good young player he’s going to get a good big contract but then like after side like that look you’ve got sherro Hall Petri ma like that’s a very uninspiring blue line like bench Rod I think still has some game left but you know if he slot it lower in the lineup then it’s better um but to me like I don’t know Hall sat out a lot last year Petri hasn’t really been great Ma hasn’t been I mean he’s okay but he he really wasn’t the same player he’s been uh he had a bad shoulder injury back back in Pittsburgh and to me ever since he hasn’t been quite as good but um I don’t know like to me and they have lots of goal tending they they sign talber they signed Campbell uh you know they obviously still have Billy huso they’ve got Alex lion like I think husso is probably a prime target to get moved and I would hope that maybe they can pull off a trade moving a goalie for a defenseman bringing another I don’t if they can get a top four defenseman out of vly hoo’s contract but something like that I mean whoo is I don’t I’m not sure what to make of him either I mean when he was traded out of St Louis like he only he really had he’s a late blooming goldendog rested again so hard to say but Detroit doesn’t appear to be completely done I would suspect if they’re going to make a trade it’s going to be moving a goalie trying to shore up that back end a little bit cuz like that’s I don’t know when I look at it it’s kind of uninspiring to say the least uh I did see some speculation about the devils maybe trying to create a reunion for Taylor Hall um the rumor that I saw had Hall being traded maybe or at least being considered for Eric Howa I I don’t think that’s going to happen now Eric Howa has made it known that he’s quite content to be in New Jersey and he does have a fulln trade clause so I don’t see him waving to go to Chicago um if Taylor Hall goes to New Jersey because if you look at their roster I mean I’m not really sure that they really need them but if if they really want to bulk up if Chicago would eat a little bit of money um he could probably grab a top nine spot there they the Devils still need to sign Dawson Mercer that’s a big part of their RFA business uh you know from what I can see I don’t see a scenario where New Jersey Trades Mercer unless are the contract negotiations get really really bad or something I don’t know that it would really be uh leading to that um but for Hall to go to Chicago I mean uh from Chicago to New Jersey like that it could happen but I mean I don’t have a lot of faith that that’s something that’s likely to happen um Taylor Hall obviously had a very disappointing year last year suffering another injury I mean that’s the kind of the story of his career in his life too like he has suffered a lot of injuries and Taylor Hall I’m not saying he was a you know he had his moments like he did to win an MVP award but for a guy who went first overall he didn’t appear to be the franchise changing player that a lot of teams thought he would be um in a large part of his um his career that why he maybe hasn’t been better was injuries he been a really good player um if you take a look at you know T was was Taylor versus Tyler Hall versus San and for the number one pick that year and they both had really good careers but they’ve also both suffered some pretty serious injuries so I don’t know I’m not really sure that uh Chicago is going to move Taylor Hall uh if they do maybe it’s at the deadline um so we’re talking well to next season and you know reunion in New Jersey wouldn’t rule it out but I think it’s early in premi tour to say that’s going to happen before the season starts um now syy Crosby uh Crosby of course as we know is finally now eligible for a contract extension in the first time in a long long time I believe it was what was a 12 or 13e contract that he signed with Pittsburgh um and before that he had what was it a 5-year deal I think coming out of his entry level contract so like he’s been in the league a long time time um obviously he’s been making the 8.7 million he’s been in my opinion greatly underpaid for a long time made an extra a lot of extra money through endorsements and commercials and other things that he’s done um off the ice but Crosby has been earned tons of money yes but underpaid at the same time absolutely um you know there’s been a couple of things one Nick kios talked about it on his show and he said the fact that Crosby didn’t sign an extension as soon as he was eligible one kind of raise a lot of eyebrows around the league and kind of got people talking about is this going to happen is he going to maybe not sign and you know just kind of got people thinking hm may maybe there’s a chance and then I was listening to the Chris Johnson show uh his latest podcast where they talked about it as well with him and juliia McKenzie and you know he’s basically alluded to the fact that you know he didn’t really have any intel to say that Sid is thinking about leaving and I’m not here to say that he is either I’m not going to put words and ideas in Crosby’s head here I’m not saying that he is but you have to think the fact that a contract extension is not done yet it just leaves a seed of doubt and wonders what if and from CJ’s perspective it made sense like he’s like listen like you know Crosby gave everything he had to the Penguins last year he played an extremely high level and they still couldn’t get in they’ve missed the playoffs for two straight years you know does Crosby want to give uh the last two three years or whatever whatever he’s got left in the tank here we don’t know but does he want to spend his last few years riding things out sure he get to play with his longtime friends and teammates malcol and lat Tang because they signed longer term extensions too but they’re kind of you know toiling with mediocrity probably not being a playoff team you know and the other thing is like look at the off season look at what the Washington Capitals have done uh cuz see J mentions how like you get to think Crosby’s looking at Washington going why are we not making moves like this the capitals are in the same boat they have a legacy you know player in Alex vatkin who’s in the next year or two likely you know in the remaining years of his contract most likely going to become the League’s alltime greatest goal scorer breaking Gretzky’s record and they want to remain as competitive possible and keep their window of um winning open as long as possible being a playoff team you know and trying just to see there’s any way they have another another run in them and GM BR mccl has made a ton of moves this off season like they they’re way over the cap and then they’re going going to be deep into ltir but he you know look what he’s done here like he picked up Pier Luke du you know then he brought in Matt Roy as a free agent to sh up the defense Trad it for Jacob Chan so like the blue line looks completely different now a couple of uh real good defenseman come in right so you’ve got you’ve got that brought in Andrew mapon in the four group um you know he’s a former 30 goal scorer needing a fresh start um obviously last year they brought in um some other players too um you know Dylan stro was a good fit there we don’t know what TJ oshi’s is doing yet uh they got some young players that are looking pretty good that you know should continue to grow like Conor McMichael Hendrick lapier but like they continue to retool at a rate where you think that you know they made the playoffs this year and you know looking at their gold differential and they get SW in the first round they really like one of the worst playoff teams we’ve had in recent memory but and that’s you know not and honestly I think that’s fair but like looking at what they’ve done this off season I expect the capitals to be a fair bit better next year you know looking at all the teams around them you know is Pittsburgh going to be able to jump ahead of teams like New Jersey’s gotten way better Washington’s gotten better Carolina you might be able to argue might take a step back it’s hard to say right now because like they’ve got a lot of a lot of change going on there um but they’re extremely well coached they work really hard uh you know the Rangers should still be pretty good uh they’ll be right up there again so like you know H how is Pittsburgh getting into the playoffs you know the Islanders were better than them last year too and at this rate I I can’t really say that the Islanders got a lot better they haven’t done that much but Pittsburgh hasn’t really either so like are they going to be able to Leap Frog them I I don’t know I mean Columbus is probably going to be most likely the bottom of the division but like you know that’s just looking at things like is Pittsburgh really have a path to get back to being a playoff team it’s not going to be easy whereas over in the Atlantic you’ve got strong teams you’ve got Toronto you got defending Cup champion Florida you got Boston who got better you know I know teams like Buffalo and auttaa Detroit are all still working on coming up and you know at least you can see them making moves to they get better they get more experience and everything like that so like it’s not going to be easy to do like I don’t see a path where Pittsburgh can just jump back up there so you know they brought up the idea of would he want to join his buddy Nate McKinnon for a year or two in Colorado and from their cap perspective that’s not going to be easy but like what if you know Crosby decides I’m going to hold off sign in extension I want to go into the season first before I decide and what if things are again not looking good and he has an opportunity maybe Colorado cuz we don’t we have two big question marks in Colorado landeskog and nushin well what if lcog tries his comeback and it doesn’t work out let’s just say that they I mean I hope for his sake it does but let’s just say that the comeback ends for example and they have his contract on ltir and nushin could go either way let’s say they’re hoping to rehabilitate the player and get him through the program and have him come back and play play but even if Landis Kong can’t play they create more room cap wise through his contract well that would be more than enough to be able to figure out a away to get Crosby to go to Colorado at the trade deadline for example like that would be massive can you imagine and then maybe he extends a year you know what does Crosby want to do is he more concerned about money does he want to win like I don’t know I mean Crosby’s going to be rubbed up for getting into these a couple coming up International tournaments cuz he’s been missing that the last number of years so uh and he still has a lot in the tank clearly this guy is hyper competitive has playing at a super high level what’s he going to do I mean they mentioned Montreal being his childhood team uh his dad of course was drafted there never made it as a player but you know I don’t know and because in in 25 Montreal looks like they could be positioned to have a good amount of cap space to to really make a run at some free agents if he makes it there and doesn’t sign I I guess maybe but what what’s important to Crosby like you know like I just see him being so competitive unless Bunch was knocking on a cup window and like they were going to be expected to contend for it I just don’t I don’t know that that’s something that would be to me I think that’s most important to him at least I would think and I know he’d probably love to see it happen in Pittsburgh but it just doesn’t look like you know it’s it’s likely going to happen I mean I’m not sure what more dubis is going to do to really change things there but like you know at the same time I know that he really encouraged between the team and his buddies there with little T Malin to get new contracts done and they they did and now it’s his turn you imagine I just don’t see him being the kind of person that would turn his back and be like yeah you guys resigned but now I’m not going to so it’s so conflicting to say how this is going to go but just hearing some you know Insider reporters here like Johnston and kyos talking about the fact there’s some doubt that may may maybe he could go it just quite the topic and thought to think about so let me know do you think there’s a chance Crosby doesn’t sign an extension is there a possibility he moves on even if he doesn’t move on this summer during the season next year by the deadline could he join his buddy Nate McKinnon or you know somewhere else you know what would the options be there would be a lot of teams loveed to to acquire Crosby if they could it just you know grety was treated anybody can be treated it can happen but it’s crazy to think about so let me know you think the future of Crosby is he going to ride out his remaining years in mediocrity in Pittsburgh is Kyle dubis going to figure out a magical way to turn things around or would Crosby actually decide that he’s had enough and move on it’s hard to say let me know what your thoughts are down in the comments we’ll Very curious to hear your speculation on who the Wings would go after in a trade?
Kyle Dubas will screw up the Penguins.
How bout some Sabres Rumors top 6 chatter?
Fabbri and Walman were moved bc they get injured too much, i think. 🤷♂🤷♂
11:30 I think that's because nobody wants them. Plus, I bet Fabbri gets flipped at the deadline (unless he's hurt), and the Wings don't owe anything. I'm with you on Walman, but I still think 'future considerations' might be interesting there.
Chris Johnston a Toronto media guy 😂 Toronto media and fans are the most delusional people in hockey
Crosby for Marner
Lets b real crosby is staying on Pittsburgh!
How about Kakko and a 2nd round pick for Necas?
Sid isn't leaving
Let’s go Caps 🦅
Sid has always said will be pen for life
Crosby to Edmonton at the deadline.
Hall isn’t the dynamo he once was, and as you said, he’s injury prone. NJ won’t do that deal unless it’s for a bag of pucks (imo).
This tells me that Crosby has not bought into Dubas' plan. It seems as if he wants to see how the team will do this year before he make his decision.
It would seem if Crosby were to leave Pittsburgh it could be with one of the Canadian teams to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada.
Calum Ritchie & 2 1sts for Crosby
I totally get getting rid of Robbie Fabri. The Jake Wallman trade makes no sense to me.
It’s nice that Cameron is the head Canada coach but it does make me shake my head that the World Jrs. are once again held in Canada. Since the year 2000-2027 that’ll be 13 times the tournament has been held in Canada. I would think the IIHF might want to look at spreading that out a bit more between Europe and Canada. After all it is a world tournament. And I’d like to see the World hockey championships in North America for a change. That would be a challenge what with the Stanley Cup playoffs going on at the same time.
As far as the juniors go though let’s at least make it fair to some of the other participants.
I don’t think Crosby would leave, I think he would retire first, he’s a career player for one team.
Crosby is the greatest player of his generation, the guy is already a legend. Personally, I think it would be a crime to hockey if he sits out the rest of his career in Pittsburgh. The fans need to see Crosby in the play-offs, he's too good not to. Crosby and MacKinnon on the same team would be awesome to watch 😎
Crosby Letang for Marner Rielly
Randgers lost Roslovic! Not sign Tarasenko! No sign nothing from jul 1st.What about Trouba trade?$8m.pai get for nothing!
If Yzerman can get anything good for Ville LOOSO, Holl, and Petry Dish he'd be a magician!
Just because Crosby appeared in a Tim Horton's commercial with McKinnon doesn't make them friends. Crosby has more in common and history with Brad Marchand than with McKinnon. Pittsburgh ain't taking back broken down players in Landskog and a drug addicted Russian. If I'm Boston, I'd package Swayman, Lorhei, Lysall, a first and a second for Crosby
