The Canucks Sign Two MUTANTS On Defence!

every general manager has their own unique strategy Brad tree living loves signing former Canucks Jim Benning loved overpaying fourth liners Patrick Alvine takes it to a whole new level much like Professor Xavier from the X-Men Alvine seeks out extraordinary mutants he is on a mission to sign the biggest and most formidable defenseman in the league in today’s video we’re going to break down the two behemoths that alven signed to round out the Cano’s defense but before I get into it please drop a like And subscribe let’s start off by making one thing clear the Canucks were never going to replace Nikita’s zorov his unique combination of size speed and snarl were going to get him paid at the deadline for canu fans it is difficult to stomach that Boston out of all teams is the One locking him in prior to free agency the Canucks were linked to Joel Edmonson a 65 depth Defender and were expected to Circle back on Ian Cole they ended up signing Derek forbert and Vincent dear let’s start with forbert unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positive is with this player so let’s start there multiple injuries and surgeries have led him to miss a combined 75 games over the past two seasons these could be a concern moving forward especially for a player that isn’t really mobile and struggles to move the puck his cory4 percentage the last two seasons has been 44% the worst on the Bruins defense with minimum 500 minutes played matter of fact it’s negative 6.5 percentage points relative to his teammates so what did the canak see in forber other than his size well with Ian Cole leaving the fry they needed to add a penalty killer and forber is Elite in this regard he is in the top 1% of the league when it comes to PK according to J fresh he uses his reach well to prevent cross ice clappers and is efficient at stopping the opposition at the Blue Line at five on five there are some positive signs as well even with his poor possession numbers he was good at preventing opposition chances last season out of eight Bruins defenseman that played a minimum of 250 minutes he ranked first in expected goals against per 60 expected goals for percentage and high danger chances against per 60 that’s all you can really expect from your third pairing go out there be responsible and don’t put us in a situation where Hughes and ronic have to play the hero on to the second half of that pairing Vincent dear now I was a bit conflicted about this signing especially with how the season ended dear was benched in favor of Philip broberg the price stuck out to me as well do you really want to pay a bottom pairing defenseman 2 mil that is the same contract that was handed out to Jordy Ben and fans not wait until his deal ran out I asked a relative of mine from Edmonton if de har had any redeeming qualities his answer was a resounding no but after looking into it the cans may have a player on their hands now to refine his game is going to require a lot of work from toet and his coaching staff he needs to improve his positioning in the defensive Zone his ability to make decisions under pressure and all of that stems from his lack of Mobility as a bigger guy we’ve seen how the Canucks have transformed the game of big men before but this challenge is unique for one dear does not have the years of Prior experience that Myers Susi and zadorov did but looking at the analytics just like forbert there are some promising signs he led the Oilers in high danger chances against and he did this while leading them in defensive Zone starts he also led the Oilers in expected goals against per 60 and actual goals against per 60 as well he was also their best penalty killing defenseman and like forbert he is in the top 1% in the league while short-handed pretty much he’s the right-handed forbert it’s clear what the conu are trying to do with their defense core they want Hughes and ronic to carry the offensive load in the top four whether that is together or apart remains to be seen and they want their third pairing to be physical play low event hockey and jump over the boards as penalty Killers this could backfire on them because neither of these guys are very Adept at moving the puck they’re also going to get a large chunk of their shifts in the defensive zone so it would have been nice to see the kanaks have more balance in their third pairing branstrom and boquist were both free agents and right handed to boot they could have slid in beside forbert and provided more of a dynamic element but the Canucks clearly value size and snarl in their third pairing above skill we’ll see in training camp how the lines play out but don’t be surprised to see the kxs make a move during this season if this pairing really falls on its face they have the option of calling up a puck mover like Cole mcmo or they could acquire someone through trade it looks like they’re going into the season without using ltir which will allow them to ACR cap space as the season progresses let’s continue this conversation down in the comment section what are your thoughts on these two signings who would you have rather signed to fill out the defense other than zor off and do you believe that Adam foot can turn these two mutants into a formidable third pairing thanks for watching and until next time cheers

If there is one thing clear about Rick Tocchet hockey, its that he covets big defensemen! Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford have done an excellent job of cornering the market on these mutants, from Carson Soucy, to Nikita Zadorov, and now Derek Forbort plus Vincent Desharnais! However, size on the back end does not always equal competence. In this video, I break down the positives and negatives of each of the Canucks new defensemen!

  1. I think these 2 d-man can improve under the Tocchet coaching staff with Adam Foote & Sergei Gonchar. Look at what they did with Tyler Myers making a player the fans wanting to ship out ASAP to being a very solid 2nd pairing. They took Hronek who was a decent player and made the him one of the elite d-man alongside a Norris winner in Hughes. No doubt this coaching staff can get the best out of these guys as well.

  2. I hope they work out but if they don’t they are replaceable, remember when we were signing guys like this for our top pairing? Feels like 1st world problems

  3. I think Desharnais can improve to become a slightly worse Zadorov with the help of our coaching team, but Forbort seems too risky to bank on given his injury history. Good thing he is only signed for a year.

  4. I’m a little concerned with the bottom pair but improving the forward core had to come from somewhere. It would have been nice to get someone like carrier but I can see what they’re going for here

  5. Luke was right Canucks suck. And like the sabres they will never win a cup..alvin is a dolt, The owners are a joke don't spend money on marquis players..lindh9lm/zadorov/ their best players in playoffs and wont sign them is proof of there incompetence. Wouldnt give Z an extra 300k to stay? Owners dont have winning mentality and never spend. Dont say the cap, they can make room. The best forward theyve had in 30 years is marcus naslund..messier didnt count..its a loser franchise for a loser city. Luke was right. Managing money doesnt win cups spending does

  6. As a Bruins fan I'll tell you that Forbort is amazing at killing penalties. Everything else not so much. But as a bottom third sixth defenseman he's not too bad.

  7. This team is being built for Rick Tocchet. So I trust the process. As well they have Adam Foote and Sergei Gonchar, two Stanley Cup champions coaching the defensive end. I believe they can mold anyone into the player they need.

  8. I AM A BRUINS FAN AND FORBORT IS NOT A MUTANT. IN FACT HE IS THE OPPOSITE. HE IS A LIABILTY ON THE ICE, HE IS NOT PHYSICAL , CANNOT PLAY AGAINST OTHER TEAMS TOP 6 AND ADDS ZERO OFFENSE. WHEN HE BECAME HEALTHY HE WAS BENCHED IN THE PLAYOFFS BECAUSE HIS DECISION MAKING WAS AWFUL. HE IS AT BEST A NUMBER 6 DEFENSEMAN ON A TEAM THAT BARELY MAKES THE PLAYOFFS AND A HEALTHY SCRATCH FOR A TEAM WITH HIGH ASPIRATIONS. GLAD HE IS NO LONGER A BRUIN

  9. Absolutely gutted to see deharnais go, but seeing the 2 mill price tag is why for sure. And redeeming qualities? That height, reach, commitment to the team and the system and he's more of a two way than defensive def. He does make mistakes and stumbles, but I think that is the inexperience, just give him minutes and a great linemate. This 2 mill is like a projection of his potential value, so 1 year makes sense so he can be given these minutes. Sad to see him go, especially to a rival but all the more reason to watch the Canucks. Proud of edm and vinni!

  10. Honestly i saw this commet somewhere else buts its spot on. Alvin hand picked players who look like toccet style players and will improve greatly under him. Canucks forward core got alot deeper and the dcore at worst stays the same and at best, will be hell to play against

  11. Pretty weak defence now. Debrusk is streaky probably better in the playoffs. The real issue here is Pettersson if he plays like he did in the last half of the year we’re in trouble.

  12. 1:43 Thumbs-down for calling a slap shot a "clapper". Come on MAN this is Canada! We don't need some US basketball commentator spin changing the hockey language (that's where clapper came from).
we say Z (rhymes with ed)
we spell it colour (not color)
we say slap shot….never clapper (OMG that's lame)

  13. As an Oiler fan l am sad to see Vinny go but l get it, you are 29 years old and you gotta take care of yourself financially. I know Vinny wanted to work something out but it's a business right? Canuk fans you are getting a really good defenseman with a huge reach. Great team guy who plays smart. You guys lost Zaborov who l thought was over rated and the replacements are better team guys. Vinny l think will become a fan favorite there . Gl and thx for your play in Edmonton.

  14. Oilers PP destroyed everybody including the Canucks. seems like a bit of an over reaction to focus so much on PK when their own PP is even worse.

  15. Zadorov really? So are we going to see another 8 years of losing yet again. The trade is BS and sucks. Why not get rid of Myers he sucks. Why do we get rid of all the good talent? What's next trade Demko for Quick maybe.

  16. Brendan Dillon would have been a better option. I talked to him at 8 rinks once and he wanted to play here. He’s tough, reliable, and smart. Forbert is a mistake: I remember when he chased Hoglander around gooning him!

  17. The one thing you don't address is heart. These guys will do whatever to protect teammates and Tockett will get the best out of them.

  18. Canucks needs still
1.Still need a Puck moving D Man in our Third pairing unless they split Hronek and Hughes up
2.A Top 6 Forward as well
    Boqvist is an option
Schultz is another option but years ago he had a chance to sign with Vancouver but declined only to sign with Guess who…Our Enemies Edmonton Oilers
    I trust Rutherford though

  19. Just look at how Tocchet, Foote and Gonchar transformed Tyler Myers game. He wasn't worth a bag of Pucks his first 5 season in Van. Last season he was stellar and heavily trusted by coaching staff.

  20. Tocchet and the top management want a team that's no fun to play against, so I think with Tocchet, Foote and Gonchar teaching their system, they can hopefully improve both players short comings. If not, they'll be on the Kuzmenko train that leaves town. And, with the addition of Sherwood and DeBrusk, the toughness factor is even higher. Both players can also find the net. This current lineup shouldn't be too much fun to face. I liked the comment, the visiting teams will be stocking up on pain killers. Ha ha. Couldn't agree more!

  21. The Canucks went forward with Zadorov, then once again literally counted their pennies and let him go. Their defence is big but slow, and McDavid and Stamkos will skate circles around them. Hughes is not a defenseman but does everything else. Not going to win cup in 2025.
