Nick Nurse says 76ers are ‘much better’ than they were a year ago | NBA Summer League

Nick nurse head coach of Philadelphia kind enough to stop by Nick’s great to see you how you enjoying your time in SLC hey it’s great we got good weather good games the games were exciting last night I thought uh good to get out here and see the young young guys get to work you know I don’t know if you carry a scratch Pad but I’m sure mentally you’re taking a lot of notes with a lot of these young players Bona looks really impressive Council played high level last night what do you who’s impressed you at this point what do you like yeah I thought I thought our our main guys really did a good job obviously Council was really good he’s really come along in in a year uh Mona was really active and athletic uh McCain was good Jeff dton was good I I was pretty happy I thought they played they all showed what they could do last night coach it was very exciting watching you guys try to get it done in the playoffs you obviously you fell short but uh you made some moves uh and and B and I were talking about the fact that I think you’re you’ve gotten closer talk to us about uh the acquisition now George first of all it was a heck of a playoff series wasn’t it man those games were those games were awesome but uh congratulations to the Knicks they they had a great year and also had a good summer but yeah we we think we’re doing some good things obviously add PG there we kind of got our our middle filled up there we got Tyrese and Joelle at the one in the five and and PG fits right in there we’ve also resigned Kelly UB another Wing that that played well for us uh Caleb Martin uh as well Drummond the backup Jo so yeah we’ve done a good job I think I think right now we feel like we’re we’re much better than we were a year ago you know coach um it’s amazing to watch East versus West uh you know a little bit of different style of play uh West may like to run it more East oldfashioned bang it inside play some high level defense but man I tell you each and every year you’re still looking at defense Boston use that to win another title and the importance of the three-point shot right 100% And I agree with you I think uh man there’s a lot of good teams right now I think I think there’s so many and I think that everybody’s talking about all the East wasn’t very good but but then you watch everybody play you know Indiana’s good New York’s good Milwaukee us you know had battled some injuries um Miami battled some injuries you know there’s a lot of good teams in this league right now but but you’re right you better guard if you want to win at a high level and you better have Shooters out there coach obviously had some great success uh in Toronto and as you have watched this league um and you’ve been known as a very creative coach in what you need what where have you seen this league trending as far as defense it’s hard to guard a guy in isolation 101 good scor so what have you seeing this league trending uh on both sides of the ball well I think we already talked about it I really think that that spacing and having having five guys out there that can shoot on the perimeter to give get make it almost impossible to to send two to guys I mean I think there’s there’s been a lot of double teaming a lot more Zone all those kind of things but when you have so many shooters out there it’s hard to play anything right so um it comes down to kind of toughness you know desire making extra efforts challenging shots and then Limited in the glass I think one of the biggest things that’s changes is the offensive rebounding man people are sending everybody to the offensive glass right now you know what coach I think a little luck comes into play too injuries just play such a huge part and how you finish or who you have to rest and make sure they’re prepared for postseason play talk to me about Tyreek sign the extension and just his impact with Philadelphia yeah he’s really really good he’s he’s uh he’s so fast as everybody knows and he shoots that deep easy3 uh tremendous worker um really had a breakout season last year but I don’t think he’s anywhere near his ceiling he’s just still figuring out um he’s young he’s still figuring out all the nuances of the game I think there’s some other levels he can score at he kind of scores at the rim and and three right now I think there’s some other moves that he’s got in his in his bag that he go to when he when he needs to um but tremendous person like such a good player but a better person coach you know this is obviously a developmental League guys coming in at 19 20 years old when you when you go to the summer league here and in Vegas what are you really looking for that might be able to be an important part of what you’re building right now yeah I think I think guys that are going to bring energy can they consistently go to work every day I mean you you know how it is right this is a this is a real long day job like you got to take care of your body you got to get in the weight room you got to stretch you got to get ice tub hot tub everything it’s it’s all day thing and can guys do that and then and then be ready get themselves ready to go you know they’re going to play three nights in a row here um they’ve got to take care of themselves do they understand the game you know are they going to contribute and fill the role that they can they can fill yeah back in the day it was ice pack and hot pack that’s all pack yeah hey coach nurse timeouts on the floor we’ll let you lose thanks for your time no thanks guys [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

  1. They doing the raptors approach. Couple of amazing players on the top. Solid defensive players. Solid bench. And some vets. They got a chance

  2. Wasn't impressed with the PG move, a little more impressed when they re-signed Oubre, then I was actually impressed when they managed to get Caleb Martin from the Heat.

  3. Amazing how far Max has come and i think he still hasnt hit his peak. This team, if they can stay healthy, could finally make a deep run in the playoffs.

  4. Wow the 76ers team with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey got better after getting rid of Tobias Harris and adding Paul George. Who would’ve knew?

  5. If the floor was tobias harris, then i can pretty much agree. Paul george just needs to be PG and its already the best team in the last 5 years.

  6. Harris TANKED in the Playoffs literally. That is no other way to put it. Seemed like he didn't care if the 76ers won or lost. So that's addition by subtraction. No other top TEAM in the EAST had a better draft then Philly. No other team made better offseason moves. Plus these moves make far better sense then the previous ones which I never loved to begin with. I rate Philly now as the top TEAM in the EAST.

  7. Sixers have 4 players on their roster, everyone else would be a benchwarmer on a contending team. You can't win without roleplayers.

  8. Nick Nurse is a good coach who needs a team of stars to coach. Happy for him as a Raps fan.

Raptors needed to blow it up in 2019-20. Sell high and slowly integrate the prospects to replace Gasol and Ibaka. then replace the Guards and Wings. We never really did that. We trying to be pretenders when we should have been rebuilders. That is what the original Masai Raptors did.

  9. People are skeptical and i get it but i think people are underestimating how much better even a choking paul george is than tobias harris. Tobias was legitimately awful in that knicks series, he was awful in the celtics series the year before that, he was awful in the raptors series were kawhi hit that jumper. He was paid to be a 3rd option and consistently was getting 40 minutes in the playoffs and playing like one of the worst players on the floor, and offensively even when playing well tobias' game doesnt quite mesh well with embiid (or most stars for that matter), because he's not good enough to have the ball in his hands consistently but he also doesnt like shooting threes. Just not a very good player to have on a winning team
