2024 Seattle Seahawks Predictions: Linebackers

did the Seattle Seahawks make the right call this off season going relatively cheap and shortterm at the linebacker [Music] [Applause] position what’s up everybody good morning welcome back we are continuing on with the prediction series and like I said we’re moving back across the defense we’ve made our way to off ball linebacker and this completes the look at the front seven of course and this is an area where the Seahawks seem to be embracing a relatively clear and I would say good strategy but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work out great in the immediate future what I mean by that is the Seahawks took a very particular Approach at the off ball linebacker position this off season in that they did not spend big did not make long-term multi-year deals and were content getting some guys that were for one reason or another far from Blue Chip value in this free agency class they got two guys on one-year deals who have played well in the NFL but one guy has a little bit of an injury uh checkered past he misses a decent amount of time and the other guy has only really played effectively in this league for about half a season so both guys have big question marks both guys had to settle for one-year deals with not huge amounts of money attached to them and behind them we currently have a rookie that honestly most Seahawks fans are not super excited about who to my eye doesn’t necessarily look ready to be a great player in the NFL and then some guys who we have very low expectations for so this is a position where the Seahawks are shallow and lacking top end star power this might be one of their weakest positions honestly it’s up there with offensive line so I want to stress this this is not a bad idea at all going cheap not spending big resources and just making do with whatever you can put together on the off ball linebacker spot is probably good thing in the modern NFL the inside linebackers don’t matter as much as they used to most of the time and I think that deciding to cheap out here might work out well however that doesn’t mean these are going to be the guys who end up making it work with the Seahawks they might just end up being experiments that fail and then we move on to other cheaper guys next off season so we’re going to take a look at what I think these guys are going to do this year before we get to that though please like this Jerome Baker pretty clearly I think our top inside linebacker um obviously when you’re looking at Baker and Dodson you’re you’re more differentiating them by the mic and the will but I do consider Baker to be probably our top inside linebacker right now and he’s a good player he’s been a good player in this league for a while now he proved himself in Miami on multiple occasions and he’s a guy who puts up good stats he’s a guy who puts up numbers he’s a guy who makes plays all around the field I think he’s a good player the main issue is he’s coming off a significant injury he suffered in Miami and if we’re being honest here I I I don’t think it’s very realistic we get a full 17 Game season out of him I just I can’t imagine that happening that would be really really fortunate if we were able to do that now for the games he does play because I think he’ll play most of the season I think he will continue to be an eff an effective player so for tackles I went with 97 I think he would easily clear 100 if he played enough games but I’m going to say he plays like 13 or 14 and Falls just a little bit short remember I’m giving a lot of tackles to the guys on the defensive line and the edge rushers so that’s less for a guy like Baker tackles for loss I went with six I don’t get the sense we’re going to be having our linebackers do a ton of Gap shooting and guessing this year I think we want guys who just kind of play more disciplined and try to prevent the big play and aren’t just rushing into the back field trying to make educated guesses on where the ball is going but we haven’t seen Mike McDonald’s defense here yet so we don’t know that saaks I do think there’s going to be a decent amount of blitzing because that’s Mike McDonald’s way so I’m going to say four sacks baker has been a relatively good sack guy previously he’s gotten a lot of sacks in previous years seems totally reasonable to me also went with 10 quarterback pressures I think he’s going to Blitz enough to do that he’s certainly going to be on the field for a lot of a um a lot of third Downs so I think it’s totally reasonable and then we have pass yards allowed which I’m not going to go into Super in-depth detail on exactly how I think these guys will do in coverage because honestly at a certain point you’re just throwing darts at the wall but looking as what what he’s been previously and looking at the makeup of this team I think he’ll give up quite a bit I one with 446 yards and if he did that based on the way I think this team will be broken out in 2024 I’d be totally fine with that QB rating allowed of just under 97 I think he’ll get picked on a little bit it won’t necessarily be because of him doing anything terribly wrong it’ll be more a reflection of the fact that this team is kind of built to be attacked on the um inside linebacker spot when it comes to coverage stuff because of how good our corner backs look like they’re going to be all right next guy is Tyrell Dodson this is a guy who I am excited about I acknowledge the fact that he only really had one good half season in Buffalo but it was a remarkably good half season he was one of the best players in the league when he got forced into duty now it is suspicious that he had never done anything before then but he didn’t have an opportunity he was stuck behind good players in Buffalo so I look at a guy like a Dodson and I say he might be signing a big contract next year if he can play the way he played last year here he might be getting a monster deal next off season he’s he’s just got to prove it so I’m going to go with 88 tackles here I think it’ll be less than Baker I also kind of don’t think he’ll play all 17 games I wouldn’t assume that of most players anyway but a guy like Dodson who has never played a full season I don’t necessarily think it’s wise to just expect him to will that out of thin air um nine tackles for loss based on what he did in Buffalo I think he’s a little bit more of a gap shooting type player I think he’s somebody who will be rushing the Back Field a little bit more because that’s his skill set and while I do get the sense that it’ll be a preference in McDonald’s defense to not necessarily do that kind of stuff you’re going to do it a little bit you’re going to do it some so nine tackles for loss and I went with three sacks there’s going to be a good amount of blitzing in this defense and um eight pressures so I think we’re going to see more blitzing from the interior than we usually have come that well I should say have come used to seeing in Pete Carroll defenses uh pass yards allowed I went with 370 again I think it’ll be a pretty decent amount because when you’re an opposing quarterback playing this team you’re probably going to have to throw the ball a decent amount because we’re going to be at least good enough to be ahead a decent amount of the time and you’re not necessarily going to want to attack the cornerbacks which is the strength of the team you’re going to want to go after the line backers and dodson’s just one of them uh quarterback rating allowed I went with 104.2 I I just see a lot of games where teams are trying to mount a comeback at the End by attacking our linebackers because that’s the weakness of our coverage so they’re going to give up stuff I wouldn’t be surprised if both guys picked up an interception or something along the way and maybe that’ll help the numbers a little bit but generally speaking I think it’ll be more a product of circumstance rather than than them being terrible players um not expecting a ton from anybody behind them right now I guess the first man up would be Tyrese Knight if he looks good enough in training camp and preseason uh 34 tackles he’ll get out there occasionally but it’s not going to be a big part of the defense I think that we’ll be in a situation where we really won’t want him to be out there and when we put him out there we’re going to be kind of like hold on to your butts uh I went with three tackles for loss shooting gaps is kind of a big part of his skill set based on what he did in college I just don’t know how much will be able to lean on him to do that and while we’re here I think that because he lacks NFL experience he’s going to guess wrong in decent amount so sometimes he’ll shoot the Gap and just be in the complete wrong place so not expecting a ton there don’t have him getting any sacks I do have him getting a couple of pressures and I have him giving up about 89 uh pass yards which that’s whatever 113.5 QB rating he’s not going to get targeted enough to where that’s going to mean anything like really bad that’s just going to be like oh that’s just what you give up when you play a little bit and then you got John rigan who I do think will be asked to redo his contract at some point this off season to get it to uh minimum levels instead of the tender and I do think that he’ll play a little bit as like the fourth linebacker so 15 tackles none for loss don’t really have any sacks here don’t have any pressures here there’s I don’t have much to say here right this is just like you’re cleaning up whatever is left when these guys play their snaps whatever’s left over so 34 pass yard allowed 117.1 QB rating um it’ll be not very good but it’ll also be a very small overall amount of damage and yeah those are my totals so if we can get this out of our inside linebacker group I will be really happy now again when you’re talking about players like this the stats only go so far in order to really understand what these guys are doing we’re going to have to look at how this team does in their run defense because that’s what we’re trying to fix and that’s the area of this team that could be really ugly this year because we didn’t go out and splurge on a linebacker we were actually very very how should I put this very frugal at the linebacker spot so if our run defense is good this year and these guys work well with the fronts that we put up then even if they don’t put up these stats it’ll be good enough all right that’s what I got for the linebackers let me know what you think
