One Year Later: How NATE DANIELSON Went From A HUGE RED WINGS REACH To PROVING EVERYBODY WRONG
[Music] welcome one welcome all back to the series where we take a look at prospects drafted in the 2023 NHL entry draft and we dive into how they have performed and held up to their draft stock one year removed from that date last time I think it was on Conor Bard that we had talked about yeah we made the Connor Bard one year later and then before that we did the D reinbacher one year later we’re kind of focusing on a mixture between the top players and the guys that were taken by teams that I like and when it comes to this name he’s kind of a combination of both you know combination today we are talking about the ninth overall pick just rounding out the top 10 of the 2023 NHL draft the Detroit Red Wings selected Nate Danielson out of the Brandon weed kings in the WHL now the thing with Danielson is it’s really difficult to try to pinpoint where he was and how he got here because where Danielson was heading into the 2023 NHL draft was nowhere near the ninth overall spot you see Nate Danielson in 2022 2023 was a 78 point in 68 game Brandon weed Kings Center he was the captain of the team 62 187 right-handed guy and a lot of people projected Danielson as being this sort of two-way a capable offensively productive maybe Dependable second or third line Center is caliber guy at the NHL level that was kind of the projection that people had about this player heading into the draft and it’s why if you look at the projections I mean he was ranked to go as low as 26 by Elite prospects 27th by Future considerations Craig Button had him at 19 mckin had him at 13 and Bob Mackenzie had him at 16 but he ultimately went ninth overall which was seen on the date of the draft as a really big heads scratcher not because Danielson was a bad Prospect per se but because when you think about Steve Eisman acquiring Marco Casper in the year prior also with a top pick and you take a look at their first pick in 2023 being used on another one of these Center two-way capable guys it starts to get you wondering okay where is the ceiling going to be here what do the Red Wings think Danielson ceiling is going to be and does that align with the rest of the guys they have in the system that are developing and getting better themselves is there going to be room for a guy like Nate Danielson who was taken ninth overall to be a top six player on this team because if not then why did you take him why did you take a potential third or fourth line guy with the ninth overall pick Steve Eiserman and the thing is that sentiment continued on for a while I would say especially at the start of the 2023 2024 season Nate Danielson had 26 points in 26 games played with the Brandon weat Kings which is okay I mean it’s fine right Point per game guy but he was a top 10 pick and he’s in his draft plus one you’re expecting a lot more than just 26 points in 26 games played not to mention the fact that the Wheat Kings weren’t really all too great they finished I think third in their division that year which doesn’t sound like the worst thing in the world but when you sort it by total points you’ll see that Brandon was one of the more let’s just say bottom tier teams either way though n Danielson in this position as a Red Wings guy ended up getting traded to the Portland Winterhawks and this was a huge shift in momentum for Danielson and his career you see the Winterhawks were one of the best teams in the WHL and rounding out that season in the final 28 games of the Year Nate Danielson scored 41 gosh darn points he dominated in Portland and he added 24 points in 18 games played in the playoffs too he was an absolute beast and we started to see more of the offensive potential bring itself out too to the point that I was making videos saying hey I was wrong about this guy like he’s proving everybody wrong not even just me but you everybody else that was going out there and doubting this player at the ninth overall spot he is taking it to everybody right now and that’s awesome and slowly but surely people started to see more of the offensive Vision bring itself up to the surface not that he wasn’t a talented offensive Point producer in the past I mean he still had over a point per game in his draft eligible season that definitely accounts for something but to see Nate Danielson absolutely explode Point production wise I’m not saying it vindicates the pck m at Ninth overall but it sure as hell makes it a lot better in fact when Danielson was taken ninth overall there were a lot of people saying hey if you swap the two Red Wings first- round picks Nate Danielson at 9 and axel sandine pel who was taken at 17 who will have another video about him and the onee later series as well don’t you worry if you think about it like what if Axel sandin pel was taken n9th overall and Nate Danielson was taken 17th then it makes a lot more sense and it feels a lot better although you can’t really just go out there and do that because circumstantially at the time of the draft you could debate that things could have gone way differently had these players just been swapped around in the draft order either way Nate Danielson showing off that he has this offensive gear that we did not see last season has put him near the top of Detroit Red Wings Prospect pyramids and projections by fans and media alike Nate Danielson proved everybody wrong and he was so good that he got a quick cup of coffee with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL once his Portland Winterhawk season came to a close there he had scored zero points in two playoff games but the fact that he was still able to suit up and actually have that experience at only 18 19 years old that’s a pretty good thing not to mention the point production he had had at the world junior he had three points in five games over there for Team Canada was utilized a decent amount not the most I mean he was an underage player compared to some of the older guys so you could definitely understand that but then Nate Danielson took it a step even further because we recently had ourselves the Detroit Red Wings development Camp wrap up within the past few days or so and during all of the videos all the scrimmages and the practices that we had seen on the ice oh my goodness Nate Danielson is an absolute monster in these clips of scrimmages and other footage of him going out there on breakaways and isolating himself from other players Nate Danielson my gosh this guy absolutely torqued his Prospect teammates in Detroit with Nifty dangles and Nifty goals coming in on face forcing the puck to open areas coming in on breakaways and sniping it Nate Danielson is looking like a completely changed player today than he was when he was a 2023 draft eligible and not producing this amount of points and not having this much Swagger in his game all of a sudden we’re looking at a guy who if you wanted to talk about best case scenario sure he still has that two-way Center projectability he’s still has the Gap control he still has the defensive mindedness to allow him to be effective on penalty killing r Etc but if Nate Danielson becomes the team’s second line Center one day I don’t think that’s that out of this world to think about if you think about it like Lin maybe you do have that Nate Danielson afterwards and then Marco Casper as your third line guy that’s a really solid Center core by the time 2026 rolls around who knows what’s happening with JT Comer who knows what happens with Andrew cop a lot of these guys are not going to be here for the long term but if you wanted to project middle six two-way a defensively minded centers who can produce a heck of a lot of offense if you give them the opportunity to do so Nate Danielson and Marco Casper could very well be those guys to round out the middle six of this Red Wings team and the crazy part is I don’t know if a lot of wings fans would have projected that a year ago so in this one year later let’s just say sentiment I think it’s fair to say that for Nate Danielson he went from a huge surprise a reach of a pick at Ninth overall to somebody who’s proving everybody wrong from the folks who are watching him in the WHL to the Red Wings fans that were upset with the pick to now folks in Grand Rapids who were debating whether or not he’d actually be able to play he was okay I know he had zero points but still he was fine and now everybody watching development Camp Nate Danielson everybody he’s a good player my goodness let me know your thoughts in the comments section below about this one year later video in Nate Danielson if you’re a Red Wings fan what are your thoughts on the way he has progressed from a year before until now let me know your thoughts in the comment section below I hope you enjoyed this vsh as99 and bye [Music] [Music]

Nobody that knows hockey thought he was a reach. He's the exact Stevie Y style of player.
Don't ask Stevie why he's Stevie Fk'n Y baby
He didn't just prove everyone wrong. He proved Yzerman right.
When I saw him at training camp last year, I can already see that he’s better than Kasper
I would not count him out for this season. I could see him outperforming in the preseason to the point where Yzerman slots him in opening night. Most likely 3rd line Center in his first season though.
He will be a solid 2nd or 3rd line center! A 40 to 50 point guy!
He's making the team as a middle 6 center and probably ends the season 2C. Put Copp on his left winger, to help mentor and ease him into the NHL..
Nate the great!
He played 2 ahl games for his pro experience. He will play a full year in the grand rapids
Do you think he listened when Datsyuk was sharing some tips? Watching the 3 on 3 he skates smooth and smart and seems effortless.
It's pretty obvious when Dan Cleary was asked about Nate Danielson's progress and he simply said: There's not much I that can really say, he's just a really good mature hockey player. It kind of sounds like Danielson is already a more talented player than Cleary could have ever hoped to be Lol. Dan Cleary obviously wasn't an upper echelon talent by any means, but he was a solid bottom and middle 6 forward for several years in the NHL.
It's funny to me that even one person doubted Stevie selecting Danielson at 9OA. Remember where Seider was projected to go, versus where he was selected, and where he is now.
The moral of the story? Trust the Yzerplan.
When you go out on a limb, so to speak, what you really want to see is progress. Nate is delivering in every instance. Hopefully this will continue.
Because Yzermen and team know what they r doing
Nate is a bulldog and looked dominant already in preseason last year.
He will be centering Kane and Tera this season!!!
I like your content and narrating but I think you should put more effort into your videos and add graphics and video of the players or teams your making a video on. Just listening and trying to imagine what your talking about while watching a video game is just dumb. Sorry to be harsh but that's what I would like to see because like I said you are a very good narrator have a lot of hockey knowledge and put out great content but its just such a turn off at this point after watching you for over a year. It would also make your channel blow up if you did this. Just honest criticism. Please please do this it would be awesome. Please don't take my comment the wrong way because I truly like your hockey videos.
iirc Connor Bedard said he was the toughest guy to play against too
everyone plays good in the WHL but let's see what he can do in GR. he has to prove to Yzerman he can play really good in GR first.
what if he joins the wings and wins the calder
He's still a reach at 9th overall. 2nd line center maybe. Most likely just a good 3rd line center
