But Embiid didn’t put enough effort into rebounding
August 17, 2024
Stop saying Embiid didn’t put enough effort into rebounding. He literally grabbed the second most contested rebound. You know, the type of rebound that requires an actual effort

This is playoff stats. In regular season, he grabbed 4.5 contested rebounds/game. Eighth most among the league
This particular stat is meaningless without additional context and/or on a rate basis. Show the rebound chance % column and it’s a less rosy picture and more accurately describes the rebounding struggles in the playoffs
I’m taking the opposite conclusion from this. He’s a good rebounder when he contests it, but his total rebound number is lower. That suggests he doesn’t go for as many boards. Let’s not act like it wasn’t an issue against the Knicks
Even will never get credit for things that are proven directly by numbers. He only gets credit for being a scorer since you can’t really argue with ppg. He’s an elite defensive player and he’s improved dramatically as a passer but people rarely acknowledge it.
The Knicks was going for every rebound so it’s not surprising he got a lot that was classified as contested. He still missed a lot of box outs and let rebounds slip out his hands
But his decline as a rebounder has been tough over the years. His lost of jumping ability has been a factor in that, hopefully he can be great at it again with less offensive responsibilities
Biggest things we will need from Joel aside from Health: Rebounding, leadership (Body language, since he’s not vocal), decisions out of the double team, trusting teammates.
Idk, if you watch the games you know that the sixers and Joel do not try on rebounds way more than these stats are speaking for. I mean we lost to the knicks purely off of rebounds. You can cherry pick stats all day but at the end of the day most fans agree we need to be better off the glass. ESPECIALLY with boxing out smaller players. Also you see on just this filtered by contested rebounds he is 6th in total rebounds. If you filter by total rebounds are we happy he is a worse rebounder than Jonas Val???
FYI to everyone.
If you’re taking the most shots on the team and are the leading scorer, this will negatively affect your rebound numbers. Likewise if you are actually defending like in pick and roll and contesting drives, this will also affect your rebound numbers.
His rebound numbers would be higher if he wasn’t a primary scorer and if he wasn’t actually defending/contesting.
It’s true that he’s not a veracious rebounder but he still pulls down a good number given his role on both ends.
It’s always the dudes with mad karma thinking they know ball
