ESPN’s bold prediction for the upcoming Detroit Red Wings season. Thoughts?

  1. They’re correct in saying our defense needs to improve. However, ESPNs coverage and reporting on hockey is so pathetic that I will never buy what they’re selling regarding on ice matters.

  2. IMO one of two things happen

The Wings stay bad defensively and end up as a bottom-10 team

The Wings improve defensively and as a result get better goaltending and end up a playoff team

  3. Exactly. Defense was a lot bigger problem than goaltending last season. Fans who havent been around hockey long enough do not see the defensive mistakes that lead to a high danger goal opportunity for the opposing team. If Wings can defend better, they will clinch a playoff spot I am sure!

  4. Other than the Madden quote that makes no sense for goaltenders, I think it’s a fairly reasonable take. The Wings over-achieved last season and now have a certain expectation attached to them from within the org. and outside of it. I expect the Wings will be in a very similar position as last season but hopefully we can get over the hump.

  5. Summed up: Their defense must improve if they are to be a legit play off team.

I don’t think that is controversial.

  6. Is this bold in the slightest? Team that’s missed the playoffs and had terrible defense for years is gonna miss again and have terrible defense again. I’d say the opposite opinion is bolder

  7. I don’t understand how this is bold. They’re saying the same thing as everyone else: Detroit is a bubble playoffs team.

  8. I don’t disagree with it as a take necessarily, it’s that our D is heavily dependent on the ascension of Edvinsson/Johansson for improvement over last season, and growth of young players is by no means a sure thing.

It’s a pessimistic take, but I’m not sure it’s incorrect

  9. I agree with the fact that shooting percentage is likely to go down, but Edvinsson should also improve the whole defensive group/taking some load off of Seider. I see the wings right around where they were last year points wise

  10. that john madden quote doesn’t even make sense in football terms… you literally need at least two good NHL goalies to be a playoff team unless you have one of the top 5 in the league.

  11. I don’t see why fans are getting upset over this? I see no reason to expect Detroit to be better this year. They could be, but it would be a pleasant surprise for me and largely hinges on the youth.

  12. Our growth will be internal, we have a full year of Patrick Kane, and we have a better bottom 6 of defensive forwards. Last year was a huge teaching moment and I don’t think this group will be taking any games off.

  13. If Edvinsson can play the way he did at the end of the season then we’ll make the playoffs. He had pretty good chemistry with Petry and that’s the only time Petry has looked decent in a Wings sweater. Chiarot looked ok last year, obviously not worth the contract he got but he was pulling his weight. I think Gustafsson and Maatta will but a solid 3rd pair

  14. I can’t dispute anything here, but whoever wrote this wasn’t trying to find anything positive, like a full year of Kane and Tarasenko and more experienced younger players for example. Talbot is arguably an upgrade too. I especially dislike cross sport references and this one is straight up stupid. ESPN is not hockey literate.

Either way, prediction is folly, especially in hockey – One of the most random sports out there.

  15. We don’t have good goaltending. That’s a fact. Talbot is washed and was never a good starter. Husso should be the starter. He was acquired to fill that stop with a 1B behind him(Talbot). As long as he stays healthy he can stop the puck just well enough.
