[Strib] Twins won’t shrink payroll further in 2025, regardless of television situation

  1. Oh gee wizz a top 10 richest owner in MLB wont shrink payroll thank fuck. Was worried we might fold during this season

  2. Too late, turds. You don’t deserve this fanbases money or attention at this point. Done being hoodwinked by you cheap, worthless, unethical assholes.

  3. Well IF that pans out to be true, that’s nice. But honestly my biggest takeaway from this is that the Pohalds are absolute PR morons. If this is in fact the plan, Joe could have gotten the laziest PR points ever by explicitly saying this instead of the gymnastics word salad he threw at Gleeman. And honestly there’s a way they could have framed this year’s payroll cuts in a more positive light of moving on from non-contributing vets making money like Gallo, Mahle, Kenta, hell even Polo if you want to throw him into that, and say you’re letting the young guys take over. You still will face backlash from not adding to a strong playoff team, but that’s a hell of a lot less heat and better vibes than saying some shit like “right sizing” from the start, and maybe the entire fanbase isn’t as your throat as extreme as we are now. Don’t get me wrong, we still don’t like you, but maybe we don’t absolutely hate you

    And truthfully this year is similar. It’s not hard to find money coming off the books this year:

    * I still don’t know how Farmer survived roster crunch last offseason, but he’s sure as hell not this year. He’s bought out at $250k and that cuts $6M
    * Santana is the definition of an old vet that FO walks away from, that’s $5M off
    * Kepler’s gone and there’s $10M away
    * We have to pay Margot $2M to fuck off but that still is a net $2M freed up
    * Desclafani was paid $4M this year and is gone
    * Thielbar was paid $3M this year and is gone

    So really even before you have to start trying, we’ve already shaved $30M of of payroll. Yeah, a chunk of that will get eaten up by arb guys, but the only significant ones are Willi in year 4 and Ober/Ryan/Jax/Duran all entering year 1 and going from league min to a couple million. But from a PR standpoint, why is it so hard to say “we recognize this year was a disappointment and slashing payroll had a negative effect on our organization’s success on the field, which is why next year we will not be reducing payroll further”. Like I said, you’re still going to take grief from the fans as you should, but holy hell Pohlads, hire literally any semblance of a PR team and you can at least try to swing the narrative a little bit rather than continually saying the dumbest fucking things possible that are guaranteed to make people mad at you

    All of this by the way is a completely separate conversation from if it’s possible to field a competitive roster with payroll where it is and as currently constructed, and that’s a conversation that can and will be had. But FFS Joe, at least pretend to think about trying to care about how you come off

  4. Back to tanking this franchise is done. Like what even is this article? Nobody fucking cares lol.

  5. They won’t shrink it but anyone that will be a free agent is gone. And the replacements will be lower quality. The cost of contracts will go up meaning we will be getting “Great Value _____” instead.

  6. ‘Won’t shrink payroll further’ is some sort of Orwellian announcement. Like ‘we’re not going to be the owner in Major League, but that’s as far as we’ll go!’

  7. Sounds like a weird twist on what otherwise seems like the plot of the movie Major League playing out in real life

  8. “Won’t shrink payroll” ahh so they won’t be spenders in free agency then. Trying to beat the white Sox record I see.

  9. I think this was the plan all along. Get the money stuff from the TV deal out of the way to give them time to figure it out. They got paid this year so that way next year they dont need to worry about it. Just super bad timing. Fun thought: Should we also be blaming Bally sports for the downfall of the 2024 Twins too? …Cause we probably should. Fuck ’em.
