Bernie Miklasz Show: Cardinals wasted Goldy-Arenado years.

The Cardinals acquired first baseman Paul Goldschmidt before the 2019 season. According to reporting from Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are moving on from Goldschmidt. His contract is up, and he can become a free agent, signing with a new team that could give him a chance to win a pennant and World Series.

And with the Cardinals entering a rebuilding phase, it makes sense to go with young players, so we’ll probably see some new faces at first base for the Cardinals next season.

Before the 2021 season the Cardinals made a stunning trade for third baseman Nolan Arenado, and the Goldy-Arenado infield cornerstones seemed set to lead the Cardinals to greatness. They even finished 1st (Golldy) and 3rd (Arenado) in the 2022 National League MVP balloting. But that was the highlight of their four seasons together from 2021 through 2024.

The Cardinals wasted the Goldschmidt-Arenado years. All in all they played in three postseason games together, didn’t hit, and the Cardinals lost all three contests: the wild-card game against the Dodgers in 2021, and then got eliminated in 2022 in a two-game sweep by the Phillies in the wild-card round. Hopes of a World Series title never materialized, and the Goldy-Arenado tandem didn’t come through in limited postseason opportunities.

  1. SEE HOW BERNIE DONT RESPOND, HE KNOWS DAMN WELL THE TRUTH. HE KNOWS DAMN WELL MINORS NOT THAT BAD. HE KNOWS ARE HE DOESNTCARE THEY HAD 6 PLAYERS TOP 100. GET OUT HERE THAT MESS BS. THIS BERNIE KNOWS DAMN WELL THAT TONYS YEARS THEY WON WITH VETS AND TRADES. HE KNOWS DAMN WEL THEY TRIED THIS IN 9S AND DIDNT WORK, WHY FIRED TORRE AND HIRED TONY. U ARE FULL OF CRAPMIKLASZ. A MESS GET OUT HERE AND HE ALSO KNOWS DAMN WELL THEY DONT NEED REDUCE PAYROLL TO DO THIS. BUT YOU WONT HEAR OUT HIS MOUTH, IT DOESNT FIT HIS AGENDA. TELL THE FYING TRUTH BERNIE.

  2. Along with the others, can't be too impressed with Bill III. He will be working on adding to the great fan experience of attending Cardinal games. Maybe he will add carnival rides, circus animals and giving 3 bobble heads out per person. At one time fans wanted to see good, winning baseball. They certainly have lost touch.

  3. I agree the farm needs an update and renovation.
I agree DeNitwit has us scratching our heads!
    I agree Mozz-arella is a big problem!
I disagree that Oli Marmot is a good manager!
They’re all problematic heads of a hydra in my opinion!
And the last two years a new head sprouted! The Moldy Avocado head reared up!
Imagine how different our conversations would be if Moldy Avocado hit 70 hr’s and drove in around 200 between them … each of the last two years! This team was built around them! And probably… if they succeed… this team succeeds. They probably make the playoffs! If they flounder.. probably so will the season!
    They floundered! Bad!
    They laid eggs on offense!
They did their teammates no favors! They protected nobody! They set nobody up for success!
They did Oli Mammal zero favors! They made his job a heck of allot harder! And in my opinion Oil couldn’t handle it! He let the Moldy Avodado hydra head clog up run production most of the season by keeping them in the meat of the order!
And they did Moz no favors!

If them two hit… I think this is a different team with a different attitude and a different swagger! I think the morale would be higher! I think there’s a good chance we go to the playoffs. I don’t think we go far with our pitching but strange things can happen! Bit of luck! Bit of magic! I like the bullpen! I generally like how Oli handles the bullpen! It would have been nice to at least have a chance to strike gold and squeak in another WS title! Have our team in the playoff fun! Even for a bit!
    What a letdown!

    The blame pie is big!
I hope the hydra is hungry!
Moldy Avocado head earned a big slice!

  4. Devils advocate here. What if Aranado and Goldy hit at or near their career averages and Contreras stays healthy? Mo is a genius if he gets a stud starter at the trade dealine?

  5. It’s insane…their hubris, stubbornness, and incompetence on full display…boys…if we save this thing we’re talking 2029…not 2026. I can get 25 million together…we just need another 6.975 billion to buy this old ferry out…come on birds fans…this is your retirement…hahah

I’m kidding I’m actually an advisor. This is in no way actual advice.

  6. I just listened to MO’s post interview, I think this isn’t all on Mo. When he said we have invested in technology in the past and staff will not use it! That’s a big issue with employees, there is more to this story, that Mo is being very professional about

  7. I will never forget or forgive DeWitt and Mo for total mismanagement of the Arenado and Goldschmidt years. They were my two favorite non-Cardinal players, when we traded for both it was a dream come true. I guess Mo and DeWitt decided we’d fill the seats and the team would be good enough, but they never tried to build a World Series winner. It’s shameful.

  8. Well, that's ONE way to look at it. Here's another. The Cards brought in these great players expecting (ok, hoping) they would CONTINUE to produce at or at least very close to their previous recent history. And that would be a LOT. THEN, the brought ANOTHER good guy on in Contreras, with that same expectation. Thought experiment: what would THIS year have looked like if ALL THREE of those guys had performed at the level Cards management thought – reasonably, I think it's fair to say??? I think they would have won AT LEAST 10 more games, perhaps even 15-20 more games. Sadly, all 3 have been huge disappointments. Having said that, the Cards management HAS failed MISERABLY with young players. Misjudging talent, failing to develop talent, both in the position players and especially on the mound. It's a LOOOOONG list of failures. Some of whom have gone ELSEwhere and done well. It's mind boggling to learn yesterday that the Cards have only 5 minor league talent coaches compared to 17 with the Brewers and 15 with the Cubs.

  9. This team has slowly regressed after Pujols left and hung on with Molina but once he was gone so was the old winning guard. Goldie and Arenada while great players with great careers are not legends. Postseason crowns the legendary players.

  10. I don’t expect you to respond to this. However, after watching the press conference, it appears that BWII is having symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. As someone who has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for almost 12 years, I can speak to the stress that comes with trying to hide the symptoms of the disease. If he is suffering from Parkinson’s, I have sympathy. I am not a doctor just a concerned fan. I hope I am wrong.

  11. Yeah it’s sad really that management never really put a good enough team around Arenado and Goldy. Mainly the pitching just wasn’t good enough. At least the last couple of years. But it does say something that in the opportunity’s they did have in post season they both choked. And I don’t think Goldy did much for Arizona in the post season either. Maybe there just not clutch players. Really enjoyed watching them both though

  12. Lifelong fan here Mr. Bernie. I grew up fascinated with your columns in the Post, and wanted to be a writer largely because of you. It also helped a young lad latch onto reading and helped me a lot in school, believe it or not. Anyways, I always wanted to meet you in person and buy you a drink someday, but a YouTube comment will have to suffice, ha-ha. Thanks for all the great content over the years, pal. (Post/ 101 ESPN/ 590 The Fan, etc)

  13. Watched the presser this afternoon. BDJ was an absolute embarrassment. The bar has been lowered and lowered badly in his world. When he looks at 83 wins as a “win” in his book, that tells me all I need to know about his current philosophy. He’s allowed Mozeliak to wave his little “I won the 2011 World Series” flag for the past 13 years with absolutely zero accountability. It’s bizarre. Mozeliak took what was once a Lamborghini and converted it into a 1980 Chevette meanwhile DeWitt wants to erect multiple statues of him because of past accomplishments instead of looking at the current situation.

  14. Goldy/Arenado era wasn't ever going to succeed because the Cardinals were weak up the middle. You can't win being weak up the middle. 2022 Marmol pulled Quintana way too soon in game 1 against the Phillies which messed up the rotation of the bullpen in bringing them in early. Hels got 3 outs in a row, it just came as the last 2 outs in the 8th and the first out in the 9th. Then, it fell apart.

  15. You hit the nail on the head Bernie and it’s been the theme since Mozeliak took over in ‘08. Arrogance. It starts with him and has permeated through the entire franchise. I don’t remember BDJ being this arrogant until Mozeliak took the helm. Now he’s become delusional and believes like Mozeliak he has this cupboard full of prospects ready to attack the National League based on his comments this afternoon.

  16. Arenado should knock Mo on his ass. He looked right in his eyes and lied to him. He came here for one reason and that was to have a chance to play in the World Series. Mo did nothing to help that dream come true. What a waste of Arenado and Goldy. And the smug jerk couldn’t care less that he just used both of those guys to put butts in the seats. Really shouldn’t surprise anyone though. He couldn’t care less about the fans. He just took advantage of die hard fans. That will no longer work. Fans will not spend more money if DeWitt doesn’t.

  17. Not only that was wasted, Bernie. The way the team is showing the door to Goldy will keep future star-quality players from ever signing with the St Louis Cardinals. There is no respect coming out of this front office or owner for such a dedicated player and good guy in the community, so other players won't come to StL.
I know I won't be watching this team in 2025, or for however long Bloom is the POBO. I saw what he did to the Boston Red Sox. His cheapness and cutting of payroll at the expense of talent on the roster might impress the DeWitts, but it sure doesn't impress me! The guy traded Mookie Betts away, for crying out loud!! Bloom won't be any better on the StL job than Mozeliak. Fans should continue to stay away from the ball park.

  18. Yes Bernie I see some “waste” of Goldy/Nado by the Cards but more so while they are very good players they aren’t winners. They put up their stats like stars but don’t really elevate those around them like Yadi/Pujols/Edmonds/Waino/Ozzie/Willie/Chris Carp did for so many years. These guys were more like McGwire stars putting up the individual stats at times but never in the team critical moments. It’s more than the post season disappearances by them both. It was 2024 it was 2023 “needing more veterans”, it was the month long ice cold slumps of Goldy and the crap attitude by Nado when his game was struggling. Goldy/Nado wasted the opportunity and quite frankly ended up being less as opposed to more in STL.

  19. I honestly felt bad for them. I saw the writing on the wall when they let go of Matheny. Haven't watched, listened to, or gone to a game in five years. Owners are more interested in being real estate developers instead of an MLB team.

  20. Nah I remember when these guys couldn't hit the broad side of barn against the Phillies. Paul batted .000 Nolan .125 . Dodgers Nolan .000 Paul .333 with 1 hit a single.
