At MLBTR, Matt Swartz has a team-by-team list of projected arbitration numbers for all arb-eligible players. And, to be precise, $6.9M is his projection for Helsley.

  1. Seems about right, but with the Bally’s news pretty much confirming how low payroll is gonna be next year, I’d be surprised if he’s not traded.

  2. Pay the man. 3 WAR from a close is exceptional. Also got his second all star nod.

  3. He deserves to be paid but I don’t think we’re the team to do it right now. A rebuilding team doesn’t need a star closing pitcher.

  4. They should pay that and not get nitpicky on this arb negotiation with him. First, he’s easily worth it. Second, that contract is still low enough that it will be easy to trade him. His trade value has never been higher, and it probably won’t be as high next year (even though he’ll still have a good year), so now is the perfect time to trade him.

  5. Rebuilding team doesn’t need a $7 mil closer in his last year before free agency. Trade him.

  6. It’s not fun to say but we should trade him. It’s either that or hope he pitches worse next year so we can extend him into our next contention window. Relievers are so volatile, I don’t want to bank on one still being elite 2+ years from now when they’re actually useful to us

  7. A closer in an expiring contract like that would bring in a kings random at the deadline. Send it!

  8. At $8.5m per WAR, that’s a surplus (for prospect return purposes) of between $10m (if you think he’s a 2 war closer) and $18.5m (if you think he can put up another 3war season)

  9. 7mil for this guy…. I can’t imagine what a desperate Padre, Dodgers, Yank, Baltimore team will offer us.

Padres gave up 2 top100 for 3 months of Tanner. Easy win come winter meetings

  10. 7 million for over half the teams wins in saves? Give me a break. Some contender is gonna be very happy when we trade him for whatever garbage Mo decides will “help” the team. I think a middling prospect and an aging starter/long relief.
