Cardinals’ John Mozeliak Hints Notable Players Won’t Be Dealt Despite Payroll Dilemma

  1. I’ll be interested in how they handle this without the Bally money then AND the desire to reinvest into the system. Gunna be some David Blane level magic shit.

  2. How much payroll falls off if we just simply don’t renew anyone? There’s Gibson, Lynn, Goldy to name 3. Probably a RP in there too

  3. Gray and Helsley should go for sure. Can get good pieces for both of them.

Contreras— deal him if you can get a decent piece back and most of the contract gone. We’ve got a ton of cheap and young catchers rising through the system, I’d probably rather run with Herrera/Pages/Crooks and see what they’ve got than stick with Willy.

Arenado— hold him. I think he’s got a bounce back season with the bat in him and he’s still good with the glove (even though he’s no longer great). Personally, I love having future HOF guys on the team, and I’d love to watch Arenado hit some milestones in St. Louis. Arenado just can’t be our main piece anymore. He’s a complimentary piece now, but that’s ok and has a role here.

Mikolas and Matz— eat 60% of the contracts and deal them for nothing or a complete lottery ticket. I bet one of them gets traded, but probably not both.

All in all I’m thinking Gray/Helsley/Matz get traded, coin toss on Willy, and Mik/Arenado stay in 2025.

  4. This article doesn’t add anything new. It just quotes the things we already heard him say after the press conference.

  5. There is the real possibility that we may be better next year.

It would help if they can get rid of Mikolas. I am indifferent on Matz. Just don’t count on him. Helsley is the most likely to go and that would definitely make it harder for us to be better next year, but in general we have a lot of young players who already played a lot for us this year. IF they improve this team could be better.

Edit: I have been just as disappointed as everyone else. I am not an apologist. We just have a young core. Not much is rolling off. Goldy and Lynn both had bad years. Gibson was serviceable. I doubt they bring him back but I wouldn’t be against it. Middleton will not be a great loss. If the young players improve we could be better. Not WS or anything but not bad either.

  6. What payroll dilemma? There is no salary cap. What has happened to this franchise?
