Offseason Outlook: Cincinnati Reds
By Anthony Franco | October 8, 2024 at 4:42pm CDT

The Reds hoped to make the jump from underdogs with an exciting young core to legitimate playoff contenders. It didn’t happen this year. With a splash managerial hire and returns to health from most of the rotation, expectations will again be high going into 2025.

The Reds have begun their offseason with a bang. As the season wound down, Cincinnati dismissed sixth-year skipper David Bell. That wasn’t especially surprising with the team en route to a 77-85 finish that represented a five-game drop relative to last season. Bell’s replacement was a stunner. The Reds brought Terry Francona out of what proved to be a one-year retirement. Landing one of the sport’s most respected managers should renew optimism going into 2025.

Blue Jays acquire RHP McElvain from Reds for INF Espinal
March 21st, 2024

DUNEDIN, Fla. — The Blue Jays started to solve their infield puzzle on Wednesday, trading Santiago Espinal to the Reds for right-handed Minor Leaguer Chris McElvain.

Espinal, 29, became the subject of trade rumors early this year, especially as Toronto brought in veterans such as Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Joey Votto, Eduardo Escobar and Daniel Vogelbach to add to an already-crowded group that also includes Davis Schneider, Ernie Clement and Cavan Biggio as utility options in the infield.

TRADE DETAILS
Blue Jays get: RHP Chris McElvain
Reds get: INF Santiago Espinal

The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for competing guys like Votto and Vogelbach, or for another catcher as Danny Jansen recovers from a fractured right middle finger.

Things have changed rather quickly. Top prospect Noelvi Marte was suspended for 80 games after a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Boldenone. That cleared everyday third base reps for Candelario, who had previously been ticketed for action between both corner spots and designated hitter.

  1. I saw on locked on reds Jeff Carr was talking about getting rid of him. I don’t understand how you can watch the games last year and you don’t want a guy like Santiago espinal. The man batted above or near .300 in 21, and the blue jays made a manager change and that could’ve played a part in why he was on the decline out of Toronto. Him on the bench is beautiful.
