This is a RARE penalty in the NHL

It’s been a tough start to the NHL season for the Nashville Predators, no doubt about it! Tonight as they rolled into Seattle, things didn’t get any better.. Just 43 seconds into play, Nashville was called for a penalty at the first whistle and while there was some confusion initially as to what for, they were called for a very rare bench penalty after a mixup with their starting lineup. The starting lineup they submitted prior to puck drop, was not the lineup that actually started the game after Forsberg’s number 9 and Stamkos’ number 91 were mixed up. This last happened in 2022 between the Blues and Oilers but what I found entertaining in this instance, was that Jessica Campbell was the one to realize the mistake and alerted the officiating crew. This is because of how poorly some reacted to her being hired as the first assistant coach in the NHL, so it seemed a bit poetic. I cover the explanation of the rule, the full game highlights and and more in todays NHL hockey video!

  1. even though the kraken have only been in the league for a short while i've already seen this happen, thanks to the AHL championships where the hershey bears committed the same penalty against the kraken's ahl affiliate the firebirds in game 3.

  2. My favorite thing was that the Kraken's first goal was scored by Sprong (#91) off the pass from Stephenson (#9). The same two numbers that caused the penalty at the start of the game. You can't make this stuff up. Let's go Kraken!

  3. The whole "this wouldn't be scrutinized if it was a man" argument is silly. If it was the first man in a typically female role and the media was making a big deal out of the guy being the first man in that position, then he'd obviously be scrutinized as much as this lady was. It doesn't help that this hiring was for a Seattle team either, since that city is up there with San Francisco and LA as the type of place that's most likely to hire somebody for DEI kudos instead of finding the best person for the job. If she's actually the best person for the job, I don't think people will have a problem with her being there, but the media (including Youtubers) and team didn't do her any favors by focusing so hard on her being 'the first woman behind the bench'. If they would have just treated her like any other assistant coach hiring (in other words, it flew under the radar) and let her prove that she can do the job well, she wouldn't have had nearly as much scrutiny. It still feels weird having women in the locker rooms for male teams (privacy has been an issue ever since they started allowing media into the locker rooms), but other than that, there's no issue if she's actually the best choice.

  4. This actually isn’t the first time that this specific penalty has been called for the Seattle krakens coaching staff. I lived in Coachella when they coached there and they had this penalty called on another team before

  5. So teams probably gotten away with that penalty more often since the refs don’t even call it unless the other team brings it up.

Why even have it as a rule if the refs aren’t gonna call it regardless
