[MoneyPuck] Defensive Pairings with Lowest Expected Goals Against (#15 will shock you)
November 23, 2024
I have no idea what to make of Myers and Soucy at #15. Obviously, twitter metrics are imperfect at best.
What does it say about their run of poor play recently? Bad luck? Mistakes killing them?
Anyways, I figured it would be of interest given Hughes-Hronek master class, and Myers-Soucy high ranking.

Soucy Myers are one of only 4 pairings on this list that have a negative expected goal differential though. And their expected goal differential is by far the worst on the list. Nearly one more XGA than XGF per 60.
It means they are playing low-event hockey, but still losing their matchups. Not too many goals scored for or against when they are on the ice, but more often it is against
The team’s expected goals per 60 at 5v5 is 2.05. So I guess the system probably has some impact? 🤷♂️
Look at their xGoals%. Based on those stats, an expected ~61% of all goals will be scored on the Canucks while that pairing is on the ice albeit with a low number of total goals by both teams.
With that said, their actual GoalsAgainst percentage is ~74% which tells me they’re both playing poorly and getting unlucky.
Tanev still doing Tanev things
Number one is the one that makes me sad 🙁
I happy there isn’t a Detroit logo next to 5 and 6, thanks Shanahan.
Anyone else feel we really missed the boat not going after Walker?
