The Wings are dumping the puck less than last year
November 23, 2024
Not my analysis but worth sharing. Their recovery is also better by the numbers than the eyeball test suggests.

Because they’re busy chasing it around their own zone
Are they retrieving it at the same rate as last year?
The wings are worse than last year is the real stat that matters more.
Because we don’t have the puck
So depressing
Correct me if I’m wrong but this article says that while the Wings are dumping the puck slightly less overall, they’re actually dumping it in more on 5v5 than last season
It is so frustrating how easily they’ll give up on a decent looking rush when it’s not even time for a line change.
Can’t dump the puck when you never have it.
So we’re not dumping it in asuch and when we do we’re winning the battles less then last year.
Could it also be we’re not dumping in as much because we’re just chipping it off the glass and then the pucks in the neutral zone up for grabs?
They still suck?
Sorry, but this doesn’t make me feel any better. We were dumping it in a lot, lot, lot last year. We’re doing it less? Well I guess it’s hard to dump it more than last year- when that was Newsy’s go to strategy all year long.
Thank you for posting this. It’s the fact that most games this year we aren’t WINNING THE FORECHECK BATTLES, it’s not that we’re dumping it in too much. Every team dumps the puck when they don’t have space. That being said our breakouts are ass and we could be dumping less if we could find consistency in our breakouts. Babcock was a horrible person but he used to always harp on that the first pass is the most important aspect of the game. It really is true, and our first pass has been horrible for most of the year and look at the struggles for most of the yesr
> Fixing this also isn’t as simple as saying “forecheck better” as there are a number of elements that contribute to a successful dump-in such as ***speed through the neutral zone***, location of dump-in, speed of dump-in, and timing with the F1 and F2 forecheckers.
I think this was a key paragraph from the article. We only have a handful of players that show any speed through the neutral zone.
You also have to possess the puck to dump it in. This year it appears as though they play less with the puck
Would love to see a more in-depth stat showing percentage of dump-ins immediately followed by line change vs. followed by a forecheck, and what constitutes a “recovered” dump-in. Does that mean a Red Wing is first to the puck, or that the dump-in is followed by sustained zone-time of X seconds or greater? Or something else?
This is my biggest complaint about advanced stats in hockey, at least those that are publicly available. They’re way too vague to be meaningful, and you can twist and turn so many stats to appear favorable (not accusing Prashanth of doing that in this article).
Bottom line is the Wings look way worse this season than last, and dump-ins are not the (only) reason. Every coach and team in the world uses some level of dump-and-chase as the graph shows, good defenses are just too airtight to only try controlled zone entries.

Very slightly less, like 3%
Because they have it less than last year?
