I’ve seen many people comparing Soto to Manny so I wanted to take the time to compare both players using the old and the new stats.
I wanted to include modern stats such as AVG+, OBP+, SLG+ etc because these stats give us a better idea of how good Manny and Soto are.
Stats that the **plus sign (+)** are used to compare players from different eras because.
For example as you guys can see Manny have a much higher AVG than Soto but when you use **AVG+** you realize Soto actually has a pretty similar AVG to Manny but since players are in a different era these days the league’s average AVG is much lower.
Another good example is OPS. It’s true Manny’s OPS was higher but when you take a look at their **OPS+** you realize Soto was pretty much as good as Manny.
What we can learn from analyzing these stats is that Manny was without a doubt a better slugger than Soto but Soto was a much patient hitter at the plate.
For example Manny in his prime had **138 SLG+** while Soto so far has put up **128 SLG+** meaning Manny was a much better slugger than Soto.
But when you analyze their **BB%+** (walk rate) you realize Soto is walking at a much much much higher pace than Manny. For example Manny in his prime had a BB%+ of 165 while Soto’s **BB%+ is 216**!!!
In summary getting Soto would have the same impact Manny had in this organization when he was signed.
Great. If I had a time machine, I’d take Manny any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Now adjust for all the doubles Soto picks up at Fenway
Also the fact he put up more WAR with a COVID year included? Insane.
You almost forget how insanely good Manny was because of the steroids stuff. Easily one of the greatest hitters of all time.
It’s a different game kind of 20 years later.
Also a different era where hitting stats were much better, this isn’t including mannys early years whereas it is including sotos (which we’re still phenomenal btw), and includes manny stats hitting in Fenway (a ridiculously hitter friendly park).
Biggest difference, one played for the Red Sox for many years. The other likely to play for the Sox for 0 years
