[Passan] Right-hander Frankie Montas and the New York Mets are in agreement on a two-year, $34 million contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. Montas, 31, threw 150.2 innings with a 4.84 ERA with Cincinnati and Milwaukee last year. He’s the first piece in the Mets’ new rotation.

  1. I was going to say that’s a lot, but, $17M for an average starter really isn’t surprising

  2. The pitching results were far from ideal, but he also did a lot to help our young pitchers so I don’t hate his tenure here at all.

  3. Dodgers not giving walker Buehler the qualifying offer gets stupider by the day lmao you telling me you wouldn’t give him 21.05 million for a year

  4. This is the same “alright that’s cool I guess” feeling I had when we signed Manaea last year. Hopefully it works out the same way.

  5. I can’t say I like this deal, but I didn’t like the Severino deal last season so what do I know

  6. Wow that is a lot of money. I really like the guy and he still has some left in the tank, but $10-12 mil/year would’ve been my guess

  7. I thought we had a chance to get him since he’s familiar with the organization but 17m/year? I guess he still has a lot of potential but he hasn’t looked good in a while

  8. That’s a lot of money for mediocre starting pitcher. Insane that a random starter makes more than the highest paid NHL player rn

  9. I would laugh and say lol Mets but after Manea owned us in the playoffs after being his daddy for years idk anymore

  10. I hate this signing, like a lot. It feels like a massive overpay for guy with a nearly 5 era last year.

  11. This is exactly how I felt after Stearns signed Manaea and Severino last year, so I’m just going to trust that he knows more than we do and let the man cook.

  12. *He’s the first piece in the Mets’ new rotation.*

That’s one way to phrase it

  13. CBass, Manaea, Blackburn, and now Montas. Put your money on Luzardo for the 2026 Mets rotation

  14. I recall him not handling the pressure very well during his time in New York. Maybe the Mets fans will be nicer to him.
