This post is also for the guy who complained about people posting about relevant ex players given current situation. In all seriousness, I liked Lank when he was here. Glad to see he’s doing well. But man we feel like the 1990-2014 KC Royals of the nhl. We get really good players who never take that next step. They leave and turn into world beaters. Happy for Lank tho. He deserves it.

  1. Lank wanted more time in net and we obliged that. He needed to take a step to become a number one goalie and we did not have that for him here.

So glad to see that he has maintained being an amazing player.

  2. Lankinen – 12-3-2 record with VAN

Tomasino – 2 goals in 3 games with PIT

Fabbro – 6 points (3 goals) in 9 games with CBJ

It’s an org problem. It’s been an org problem. The guys that “aren’t good enough” to crack the roster are traded or waived, then magically start producing. Then we sign two 40 goal scorers, and all of a sudden…. they can’t score.

    I mean…..

  3. Lanky did really well here too though. They wanted to keep him. It wasn’t personal, he wanted more start time and Nashville wasn’t going to oblige.

  4. I can understand being salty about Fabbro and Tomasino but I struggle to feel the same about Lanky.

He was excellent here and saw an opportunity elsewhere to start and maybe get a big ol contract one day. Idk why that’s so surprising. He’s the same age as Saros.

  5. I am convinced that if you are going to have a “problem position” in your organization, you probably want it to be goalie.

We almost single-handedly solved two franchises goalie problems this offseason.

  6. Meh. Just lucky. He got pumped last game, luckily Detroit was on their third string goalie. He got wrecked against Nashville, against the Islanders, 7 goals against the Oilers. Canucks won a lot of games despite Lankinen.

Lankinen is just another goalie. He’s no Saros. Heck, Annunen has better potential.

  7. I think we’re getting a bit too caught up in small sample sizes.

Don’t get me wrong though. I think there’s some major issues with this organization and its vision.

  8. It’s an org problem but also an expectation problem. And it has been since about 2019, when Poile kept adding and adding until he eventually had to sell. The problem now is we’re back to adding when we WERE in the process of rebuilding.

If you want to go back you can look at the players who had career years here that we sold: Arvy, Ellis, Weber, Subban, Joey, Craig Smith. Turns out, being surrounded by good players with good depth on a good team makes players look better!

The team is not good now and it wasn’t that good last year (or the year before, or the year before).

Fans (and Barry Trotz) need to come to terms with that and anyone thinking this team was going to do more than get out of the first round was setting themselves up for disappointment.

Trotz should have known that last year was an overachievement and he should’ve stayed the course. He should’ve known that historically, every Jack Adam’s winner gets fired the next year because COTY is a marker of a team with a hot goaltender and an over-achieving roster.

    2022: Brunette, Gallant, Sutter.
2023: Dave Hakstol, Lindy Ruff, Jim Montgomery.

    All fired!

Unfortunately Trotz set expectations way too high and now we’re crashing down because he zigged when he should have zagged. Soon Brunette will be fired, and we’ll have to start this whole process over again.
