Brilliant coaching move

  1. Am I the only person here who doesn’t mind just switching Marner and Willy around. I don’t the big 4 are talented enough that they can all play with each other and sometimes swapping just creates a little spark. It also causes a new look mid game which can throw off teams defensive strategies. I just think Keefe relied on line switching too much as a tactic. It has a time and a place though.

  2. The issue is always when they play together too much they become one dimensional as Marner tries to force passes to Matthews.

Not surprised it worked last night, both guys were just playing. Marner was used to using all his team mates and just kept doing that

  3. I mean it worked, if the line didn’t score and the Leafs lost it would be a different story

  4. I personally never cared much about Matthews/Marner together (except for one period a few years ago where Tavares/Nylander was a disaster). Whether you put them together depends on the situation and match ups.

The situation last night is that Willy was having a terrible game. He was constantly losing the puck, didn’t have his signature skating, and was more focused on complaining to the refs than actually playing. That got masked a bit by the 5v3 goal (which was all Knies).

What was kind of awesome was that Berube put them together even though it appeared like Matthews was still getting up to speed.

  5. It always worked a bit every time Keefe did it too, almost always with exactly the same results too. Mid game reuniting, a goal in about three shifts or less. I think it only failed a small handful of times.
