[Passan] “Yankees lost out on Juan Soto and might be better off… This is not a good baseball deal… It is an exceptional overpay. But it also shows you, that when a guy is 26 years old, it’s a bonanza. Age matters more than just about anything.”

  1. Saw the flair and yep. I mean it’s an overpay in a vacuum. But who cares if they’re willing to pay? I mean Cohen can afford the luxury tax far more than any other owner.

  2. Jeff isn’t exactly wrong, but it’s about how they spend that money and I wouldn’t have the most confidence in who is in charge of spending it.

  3. By the end of the month Yankee fans will be claiming they never wanted him to begin with

  4. In 10 years when he’s a DH 50 million will be the new “pay a starter of Marcus stroman/montas caliber 18-20 million a year”.

  5. Is 51 million a year really an overpay? Dodgers are playing Snell and Conforto 48.3 combined…

It might be an overpay in 12 years but maybe a hamburger will cost $50 then

  6. 51M gets you two Luis Severinos and a mid reliever. I’d take the 9 prime years of Juan Soto over that any day

  7. Did the Mets overpay? Of course they did. Personally, I think 15 years is too long for a contract. It’s very likely the end of the contract will not be good.

But, if the Mets win the World Series or two, then it’s worth it.

  8. I started to understand that when the Red Sox signed Cedanne Rafaela to an 8 year extension out of nowhere.

  9. How much do teams tend to earn-back when they sign a superstar like Soto to a long-term deal? I get the sense that when people call it an “overpay” they are usually thinking in terms of the performance they get from the player on the field, but what do they make back from stuff like merchandising, increased attendance / viewers, licensing, etc.?

  10. The Yankees coping today has been hilarious, if he chose the Yankees they would be gloating like crazy

  11. AKA, the Yankees didn’t sign him for its bad for baseball.

Don’t get me, it’s a crazy stupid contract but would we read these articles if he resigned with the Yankees?

  12. The Yankees screwed themselves not signing Harper or machado or seager and put themselves in this position

But they’re basically boned now because they cheaped out until Soto

  13. It’s comical how many Yankees fans are suddenly concerned about defense. Have yall seen your team?

  14. I’m seeing a lot of people say that the contract will look fine in 10 years because AAVs will continue to rise, but I’m just not sure about that. MLB has a big problem when it comes to RSNs, since local broadcasting rights are one of the main ways that many teams in this league make money and the market for them is presently a complete disaster.

If RSNs continue to collapse, teams won’t get money from them when current deals expire, which will immediately decrease how much money teams can spend on players. It’s probably the biggest financial problem that the game is facing right now, and few teams have a stable broadcasting situation now. Teams like the Rangers are already decreasing their spending because of what’s going on with Bally.

In 10 years it will probably be worse. People online often say that streaming games online for $10/month would be a great idea, but it wouldn’t be profitable.

  15. All I know is that this contract confirmed that ohtani was a steal for the dodgers. And I can’t believe it.

  16. I don’t think you have to be a Yankees fan to think this contract is nuts, I think a lot of teams are better off without this contract because one player doesn’t win you a world series. Contracts this long will always be off putting to me personally and that’s without them being the largest contract ever to boot.
