Will we see more Sebastian Cossa?

Sebastian Cossa was the storyline on Monday night, winning his NHL debut in the shootout after coming in to relieve Ville Husso. But with two days off following the thrilling comeback win, is it a guarantee we see him again on Thursday? If he does play, and he plays well, how much more runway does he get? Also Joe Veleno is getting scratched more and more, is he being pushed out of the lineup? #LGRW

  1. I would rather see prospects develop like Cossa in the nhl and get a high draft pick than keep these dumb vets and get a 10th pick for some guy we won’t see for 4 years because of the other guys we drafted

  2. Last year after game 28 the Wings were 15-9-4=34 points GF 106- GA 92. This year 11-13-4= 26 points GF 73 GA 88. Besides the wins and losses look at the difference in the GF. That would be the biggest eye opener. Give Cossa the next start.

  3. I really don't understand why they aren't waiving or trading Kane, who has been on strike for the majority of the season, and who only gets more on strike the further it goes. He has just shown Lalonde and Yzerman he will intentionally miss a shootout attempt that could have won the game directly. What more does he have to do? Free him. They lied to him in negotiations, he's more than merely checked out but is deliberately refusing to win games, cut him loose. It makes no sense for him or for the Wings for him to keep being on this team, in this situation, playing for this coach. The contract goes a long way towards paying him nearer what his actual value was last season. Pay him what he earned and call it even.

  4. Once it's clear this year that the playoffs aren't going to happen, I hope Yzerman trades 2 goalies and brings up Cossa & as many young players as possible. Sure contracts/number of games is important, but look where these guys are in the NHL….

  5. How many goals can Cossa score? The Wings have no offense. If you put Cossa in net, what will he accomplish except start his NHL career with a losing team. The Wings are going to be a lottery team.

  6. No, if anything, you gotta let Husso go. He has been the most in inconsistent and needs to go. Stevie Y has overpaid a slew of these guys who have underperformed, and Husso is one of them. Stevie Y has also messed up by getting rid of Walman. Walman wasn't an extremely expensive contract compared with his performance with the Wings, but Husso's contract does sting because his contract is so much more than his worth. The ultimate goal, and it won't be easy to keep them both because it's projected they'll both be good when they're in the NHL longterm, is to have Cossa and Augustine in net for the Wings. But the Wings need to grow a defense corps which knows not only to defend but to score points consistently as well. However, until they get a serious head coach, the Wings can't be taken seriously in this league. I don't know what this management sees in Newsy Lalonde as a head coach, but he probably needs at least a few more years either in the minors or even lesser league levels to be taken seriously as a head coach. Newsy's predecessor, in my opinion, was a better pick for head coaching than Newsy. At best, Newsy could be an assistant coach but he certainly doesn't fit the role of a head coach, not in the NHL of all places.

  7. Wings just had how many 1 goal games? Completed a come back? There is still lots of life and lots of time left. Cossa could be that change that is needed to push em over the top. Remember hockey is full of funny bounces. We win those 1 goal games and the conversation is much different. Need to go on a run of 5 a few times and we right back in it. Let Cossa start 50 ffs. STUD

  8. As far as Joe Veleno goes, i think he won his arbitrary case with the Wings and isn't worth 1/2 of his contract. Veleno, as I've said many times already, shouldn't probably be playing in the NHL. There are far better forwards than Veleno who play on the 4th line of an NHL team. Veleno's stats are horrendous, and if he thinks his speed on the ice justifies getting paid more than $2 mil a year, he's outta his mind. Last time i checked, you gotta be able to stick handle the puck to play in the NHL, not to chase it 200 feet back and forth from the Ozone to the D-zone like Veleno does. And Veleno isn't the only one on this Wings roster who goes back and forth 200 feet with no results literally in each game he plays. There are others who do the same, wasting precious game time and barely contributing to scoring or defending for that matter.

  9. Husso is what, 0 and 7 this season? Who cares if he "plays well" at times when he can't win games at the end of the day. Cossa should at least get a shot, let him start the next game after that preformance.

  10. I have slipped up saying Hossa when talking about Husso and Cossa so many times…
Unless trades happen, there's no way for Cossa to play his way onto the team. The cap matters, and it's for the owners' benefit, not the team or the fans.

  11. Reminder: Husso is 0-6, almost 0-7 if it wasn’t for the ROOKIE GOALIE stepping in to save the game. Give Cossa the start. Even if the game’s a loss, a goalie with no NHL experience playing like shit is a lot more justifiable than the highest paid goalie on our team playing like shit

  12. I don’t trust that our coach will make any decision that makes his team better in the long term. It’ll be status quo until he’s out of here. I would love to see Cossa start next game.

  13. Will Cossa stay if he olays well. Simple answer, No. No chance in hell, he will be sent down as soon as a goalie gets healthy. Id like to see Cossa stay but thats not how this organization does things.

  14. What is Veleno's role on the team? He isn't young anymore, he isn't a shut down forward, he isn't a big bruising forward, he has no role on the team. Flog him at the deadline.

  15. I mean Stevie has drafted 2 centers out of his 5 top ten picks. Clearly Veleno is not part of our plan, they're seemingly growing him to most likely sell. Not time yet tho, he's worth it to keep the depth

  16. Start Husso if he's ready and try to move him to a Goalie starved team. If Talbot or Lyon are going to be back by Friday, send Cossa back to GR with the confidence boost knowing he belongs and knows what he has to work on. If he gets lit up against Philly that could fester.. if he does well, then we're in a position we can't move Husso with good enough value in return, so we are in a bad asset position. If Husso has a bounce back game against Philly, we may be able to get him off the books without retaining salary clearing a better path to bring Cossa back up when Lyon or Talbot are injured. Husso's performance put a sizeable dent in his trade value, other GMs see the same thing we do.

  17. The team rallied to give Cossa his first win, tell them to do the same thing for Husso tomorrow. He deserves a win, and they all know it. They'll play hard.

I think Veleno is a great case for how Lalonde's coaching has suppressed this team's potential. I don't think Joe Veleno is that good. But I don't think he's this bad. For a player of his skill level, all it would take is a bad style of team play to make him invisible and irrelevant. You guys should talk about this more, because I think it was clear in the last game. Seider saw that game was getting out of hand and unchained himself. He went for big hits, and didn't hesitate with the puck on his stick. Lalonde is squashing this team's ceiling without really raising the floor.

  18. Make all three goalies available and see what flies. Just play Cossa and let's find out if he is ready. Trade Veleno and get what you can get for him in either draft picks or an NHL ready player. If the Wings fall out of contention, then bring up as many young players as possible. Ray

  19. On the bubble with this one. If Cossa plays well, he might become a great asset for the Wings when the "rebuild" is done, if ever. If he gets stuck behind our horrific defense and is placed in a position to have to make saves he shouldn't have to, or worse, pucks continue to hit the net because of the Wings usual breakdowns 2nd and 3rd period, will Cossa be the Judas Goat? The new blame catcher for a crappy coach? Cossa is good, but if you're rung out like a dirty dish rag game after game, then you destroy Cossa's confidence and ruin a good goaltender forever.
The Wings need change. A new head coach. "You can't solve a problem with the same mind that created it…"
    Al Einstein

  20. Cossa was raised in Fort McMurray , Alberta ,a rough, tough oil town basically in the wilderness. My guess is that he can handle anything that is thrown at him and come back strong.
Give the kid a chance. The Wings at this point have nothing to lose.
    Start Cossa.

  21. My prediction for Joe veleno is he ends this season around 19 points and everyone is disappointed, next year with his last year on the contract he gets a new career high in points at 35 on the season and people question giving him a new contract and it will be a big conversation with do we bring him back or make room for the young guys just for him to be resigned and have a down year again as the cycle continues

  22. Guys, Cossa needs more time, he will belly flop in the NHL, good lord quit using his last game coming in for Husso as if he is a GOD in between the pipes.
