Thank goodness. He may not pan out but you can’t give up 5 years of control of a rookie of the year who showed ace level stuff for a one year rental, even if he is really effin good
Trading Gil, RotY, by every measure an emerging all star level ace, with five years of team control, would have been a DISASTER. Tucker is an absolute stud and superstar, but a rental. One year of Tucker isn’t worth five years of pre-free agency control of Gil.
Cashman is a fucking moron
Yankees better have a plan to push Lombard Jr’s ass through the system and ready for 2026, cause nut-hugging prospects is always a Cashman fetish (unless of course it means emptying the system for trash like Joey Gallo).
I bristle at this normally, but at least Gil has already showed something in the big league level.
But never forgot the amount of triggers we didn’t pull because of Andujar, Florial and Frazier.
Prospects are great, they can be anything, like even top 5 players.
But Gil and a prospect was too much for a rental.
Trading Gil for a one year rental who most likely is gonna walk after the season next year is crazy. Sorry it is
Astros were NOT trading a player like Tucker to an AL rival unless we give them a lopsided haul that makes it a terrible trade for a 1-year rental.
The boot licking is insane, not trading a mid level starter for one of the best players in baseball when the teams window is closing is absolutely ridiculous
I hope they have a really good backup plan in the works. Because Judge and Stanton aren’t enough to get us to the Promised Land.
So now I gotta act like I wasn’t ready to drive Gil to Houston. Bet. God Bless Me
Who’s left to help better the team’s lineup? I like the rotation and the bullpen definitely looks nice but the starting 9 looks way different without Soto and Gleyber.
Lombard is years away and is potentially blocked by Volpe, and this team only has a few years left of Judge and Cole’s prime.
Astros weren’t trading with us. Cashman on fire this winter not pulling the trigger on ridiculous shit moves.
Gonna need 4 aces to win all these 2-0 games.
Now that the deal is done, the Cubs definitely need to move Bellinger, so hopefully that deal gets easier.
I would have done it for Tucker
Honestly its fine; we will get Tucker next offseason; lets hope him playing in the windy city will bring his numbers down and the price tag
Gil’s most likely outcome going forward is probably a league average to slightly above average pitcher due to his control problems
You absolutely move that for Tucker
That’s a wrap, folks
Including playoffs (2 GS, 8 IP, 6 ER) Gil had a 4.88 ERA in his last 20 starts. I think the right call was to go for it now while the window is open.
Tucker moves the needle. Tucker is That Guy. He’s a guy you just do not have the opportunity to obtain often. He’s legit worth #1 starter value head to head.
I understand why they’d be reluctant to move *both* Lombard and Gil and it tells you the price for us is much higher than it was for the Cubs. The Yankees tax was real. But Tucker moves the needle. He’s a real needle mover on a team that lacks them. You gotta play big to get the big prizes and feels like they balked after the Soto situation.
Yanks hug prospects and have often traded the wrong prospects who’ve delivered elsewhere and kept ones that haven’t delivered here and that’s why we’re in the spot we’re in now.
You include Gil because at best he is your fourth starter for the next several seasons. Signing Fried to that crazy contract all but condemned him to that role. What’s more valuable during the next few years, the end of both your captain’s and ace pitcher’s prime – a fourth starter or an elite everyday bat and glove?
I don’t know about this one chief. Luis Gil better have a season for the ages in 2025
we should have made that trade
Losing out an all star level hitter when you desperately need hitting seems like a glaring mistake to me. Especially when we literally just signed like the 2 best pitchers in the game. Priorities are out of whack
Dumb
I’m not trading Gil for Tucker for the simple fact he’s rental. Dude could leave and then we gave away AL rookie of the year for nothing. Soto just happened and i’d prefer for that to not be a thing again.
Gil as a #1?
Sigh come on.
I totally get it, but Cashman had better hope he keeps pitching like a future No. 1 lol
If he’s not resigning then that’s the right call.
Cashman was gun shy because of what happened with Soto. The Yankees were the perfect team for him, hitting in front of Judge, putting up career numbers, in the perfect ballpark to amplify what he’s great at and disguise what he’s bad at, with his own cheering section in RF that loved him, and a trip to the WS, and it wasn’t enough to keep him.
The same exact thing could happen with Tucker. Maybe we can wait a year and grab him when he’s a FA.
The only way not doing this is defensible is if Gil actually improves off what he did last year and pitches like an ace. Because with the state of this lineup he’s gonna need to pitch like an ace.
It’s very possible we’ve seen Luis Gil best season. Yankees could have almost redeemed themselves after losing Soto by replacing hit bat in the lineup with Tucker. Missed opportunity which I would say Cashman will regret, but he wont;’t. because their is zero accountability. He has his job for life. Regardless of results.
This is gonna backfire isn’t it
Andujar + Frazier
Why do I feel like this all but guarantees Gil will be the next Devi Garcia
A number 1 doesn’t walk 4 players per game. I hope he’s going to fix that
I really dont get why the Yanks are trying to hang on to these prospects..outside of Gil & Spencer Jones I say trade the rest now…we only have a short window now to possibly win with Judge..why doesn’t Cash & Hank just go all in right now while we have the best chance of winning a WS. Who gives a fuck about Lombard & what he could be 3 or 4 years down the road when we have to win now
Do you think the Yankees could have gotten Tucker if they ate Presley’s 14 mil without giving up Gil?
We are going to have at least two pitchers with a 2.9 ERA and 7-15 records.
Dreaming on young pitcher to be the next #1 has gotta be baseballs biggest fools gold. And every gm falls for it.
Gil will be washed in like four years. But we can sign Tucker as a FA next year if we really want him.
If you really look at what the Cubs gave up, I really don’t blame Cashman for not making the deal. Paredes is a league average third baseman that was never going to hit in Wrigley, Cam Smith is an ok prospect and Wesneski is someone they hope their pitching team can turn around. It was obvious from the start the price the Yankees were gonna have to pay was not the price everyone else was gonna have to pay.
I’m fine with not moving Gil if Tucker wasn’t open to an extension. He’s a double TJ arm and he’s not as young as you think (26 I think) so I’m all for seeing what we can get. But for one year of Tucker with no extension in place I’m ok with not making that deal
Told you homers that the Astros would never trade with the Yankees
Although I am happy Gil didn’t go for a rental after losing King last year, Gil is most likely going to regress this year after pitching significantly more innings than he ever has. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go down for some time.

Called it. Common sense, folks.
