[Nightengale] Christian Walker has agreed to a 3-year, $60 million contract with the Houston Astros.

  1. I have some major concerns about Bergman’s huge drop off in walk rate this year. Not sure he will age gracefully and he’s going to be super expensive.

I think Pete is our best option at this point but we should keep waiting him out because no one really seems to want him so we might be able to get him pretty cheap late in the offseason.

  2. This is way less than people expected for Walker, myself included. Looks now like Pete may take a haircut for refusing that extension.

  3. Pete for 6/$120M? I’m probably buying that if I’m the Mets, and I doubt Pete is getting better than that. I would love to see him back but only at the right cost, and I think I’d be pretty happy with that deal. Going to be a couple mediocre years in the back end probably, but pretty modest AAV and he probably earns that contract over the term.

  4. Wow that’s a bargain. I’m shocked Walker was so cheap. Market for 1b is not very strong. Hopefully we can get Pete back on a very reasonable deal.

  5. I have a feeling that, between this signing and vlads extension talks, Mets will blink first for Pete. Or at the very least, I think those two things will speed up the 1B signings. I don’t think anyone wants to get caught holding the bag, so to speak.

  6. Good, reasonable deal for the Astros. Very bad day for Pete Alonso and Scott Boras when that’s how the market is valuing the mid-30’s years of a “good but not great” 1B.

It’s cold out there Pete, come home.

  7. That could be a steal of a deal, could easily see Walker kill it in that ballpark.

As for how this affects us with Pete, it’s both good and bad. Good because this probably puts Pete’s value at around seven years for ~$23 million per year which I think is very fair. But bad because now a 1B is off the board and teams may now push to go after him, especially a team like the Yankees which would be awful.

Just like last offseason and during this past season, I’m still fine with going as high as $25 million per for Pete on a six or seven year deal just to take care of a homegrown player and fan favorite, but that would be the absolute most.

  8. This move tells me that either:

    1) The Mets will cave on something like 5/$130M for Pete, with year 5 being a performance -based option with an opt out after year 1 or 2.

    —OR—

    2) They’re gonna get a 3B, and move Vientos to 1B.

    —OR—

    3) They get a 3B, move make Vientos DH and are planning to get Vlad for 1B in ’26.

    Pick your poison, Mets fans.

  9. Gimme Pete for 5 yrs at the same AAV. Teams are rightfully cautious about 1B in their mid-30s and I expect Stearns to be right there with them

  10. The Pete contract just got better in favor of Pete. They’re arguably the only decent FAs available. Unless we want to settle for a 1 WAR guy, we either overpay for Pete or risk Vientos at first.

Personally, unless we can get a similar 3/60 deal, I’d be fine with 4/100 for Pete, then I think we should nab Goldy on a 1 year deal, let Vientos split time between 3B, 1B, and DH, then reevaluate both Baty at 3B and Vientos at 1B next offseason and determine what’s best at that point.

Very good chance Baty could be the better play at 3rd than Vientos and I’d like to know this year whether or not Vientos could stick at first long term. BUT, I also understand the need for another big bat in the lineup moving forward and there’s also a chance Goldy and Baty just don’t improve the team very much over having Alonso’s power threat in the lineup.

I’m guessing we pay whatever have to for Pete now. I want Vlady but I have a better feeling he stays in Toronto.

  11. Walker, reportedly, was asking for a 3 Year $75M deal at a $25M AAV. He took a deal with $15M less guaranteed, at a $20M AAV

Walker will be entering his age 34 season, and just won his third consecutive Gold Glove Award and had three straight seasons of hitting 25 or more home runs.

Pete will be entering his age 30 season; he’s not as good of a defender as Walker, but has hit 34 or more home runs in every year of his career, except for the shortened 2020 season. Though some of Pete’s offensive peripherals are down, him re-signing with the Mets, would give the team an elite four in the lineup of Lindor, Soto, Vientos, & Alonso.

My prediction at the beginning of the offseason was 5 Years $125M for Pete; however, I now feel 5 Years $115M, would be a reasonable offer to Pete, due to Walker’s deal. Either way, this signing has filled me with great optimism that Pete will inevitably return to the Mets.

  12. Your move, Pete.

Walker sunk your battleship and teams are making contingency plans to put themselves in position to make a run at Junior this time next year. Get while the getting’s good.

  13. This should be excellent news for us.

This contract tells us that the market is not valuing the first base position, especially when you have to give up a draft pick.

This should put us in an excellent position to get Pete for 5 years 125 mil or something like that.
