Braves fan here. I'm praying for the Cease trade. 1. Cease is from Atlanta. There has yet to be an Atlanta born MLB player who hasn't played for their hometown team, and not want to remain playing for their hometown team. Alex Anthopoulos had already locked up 2 in Olson, and Harris. The trade package will be expensive but very worth it because of the potential for a lock down deal to remain in ATL. A fair enough package deal without involving a 3rd team would go as follows:
Hurston Waldrep
Ian Anderson (MLB roster ready)
Blake Burkhalter
Diego Benitez or Nacho Alvarez
Maybe 1 more low A position player
As a Padres fan: that trade is no good. Dylan Cease is Cy Young caliber he should cost more than that.
This commentary absolutely hinges upon the “evaluation” of players by the Wizard of Oz. The man behind Castillo’s $9.7 million “evaluation” treats Castillo’s contract as a negative. It’s not. Castillo is not a salary dump. And getting Mountcastle in compensation for a frontline starter is a fucking joke.
Now why exactly are the Marlins helping the Braves get Cease? They have tons of 2B type prospects now and the other guy isn't good and 29 so that doesn't help them either. Can't see why the would trade Sanchez for that return and to help a division rival.😂
The Seattle deal doesn’t make sense. Ryan mountcastle plays first and we have Luke Raley. We need 2nd and 3rd base. It doesn’t make any sense and does not work.
M's fan here, I like the idea of getting Mountcastle, but the Mariners need an arm to replace Castillo or more infield help to plug another hole. Ownership is seriously, criminally cheap up here. Mayo or Basallo is obviously too much, but how about McDermott instead of Fabian & comp pick?
Not to mention we have a first base prospect who just made an mlb debut last season?? Seattle needs Castillo which is why I don’t think the O’s and M’s make a deal. The cubs on the other hand makes more sense
This is a light offer for Castillo… Why would they want an outfielder in Jud Fabian, who can't even barely cover the mendoza line in AA or AAA? That's a hard pass. None of that would make the team better. They would be undervaluing Castillo with this offer.
He's routinely a 4 WAR player and pitchers don't fall off a cliff like hitters… So let's say he's worth 3 WAR x 4 seasons. That's 12 WAR @ $9M/WAR ($7M/WAR = role player; $8M/WAR = regular; $9M/WAR = All-Star; $10M/WAR = HOF trajectory; $11M/WAR = HOF lock). $9M x 12 WAR = $108M + the $5M option which is worth $10M as it guarantees health and success if he gets the 4th year from either his total IP in 2027 (180+) or rebounding from an elbow injury.
Now you're at $118M, then figure that he's still got elite stuff, great durability, good clubhouse presence, and has proven to be successful in extreme hitting environments like Cincinnati, which means 3 WAR is the floor. The "it/x" factors are worth another $5M, so he's at $123M in value with a payroll commitment of $97.45M, so we'll cal it $25.5M in surplus value… Especially when you consider in free agency, they'd be paying $28M/year, guarantee the 4th season, and carry three years of potential decline at the same value.
I'd take it to the bank that Castillo provides more value in 4 years on the remainder of this contract, than Max Fried (a similar aged pitcher that is fairly comparable as seen in the link below). So what would it take to get the Mariners to move "La Piedra" to the Orioles… SP Luis Castillo and SS Colt Emerson to the Orioles for 3B Jordan Westburg, SP Kyle Bradish, 1B Ryan O'Hearn, and SP Tyler Wells. The Mariners take on $13M (O'Hearn = $8M; Bradish & Wells = $2.1M each; Westburg = $800K) in salary, making it a savings of $11.15M in payroll to Seattle.
O'Hearns has proven he can hit in Seattle, Westburg gives the Mariners a long-term solution at 3B, rendering Colt Emerson expendable, also Miller and Westburg would be much more inclined to sign extensions in my mind. Bradish and Wells return from TJ surgery in 2025 and act as midseason additions, while the younger guys or a band-aid starter can cover the 5th inning until the 2nd half. With the extra $11.15M in 2025 and $19.15M in 2026, the Mariners will have $30-35M to add players to the roster. Wells could also be a swing starter who works out of the bullpen.

The best fit for the Mariners would be a Luis Castillo and Tyler Locklear for Luis Garcia Jr. deal with the Nationals. The Mariners add another young controllable 2B/3B, while saving probably $20M/year. The Nationals can move Tena to his more natural position of middle infield (in this case 2B), and Tyler Locklear gives the Nationals a long-term answer at 1B, who could cover 3B if necessary. It's simple and solves two problems for the Mariners, salary ($20M more to spend), and a 2B who could hit, field, and run the bases.
Jimmy when you going realize braves not doing a damn thang?
That luzardo trade is bad for the cubs especially for a injured pitcher
The braves should go after castillo
The braves needs to keep elder
Cease be a perfect fit for the cubs
LUZARDO BE A PERFECT FIT FOR THE DODGERS
You don’t understand positional value: 1st base is so much lower than pitchers just look at the contracts. M’s need more or should I say different. Mayo for Castillo and tai peet
Does Jim get money from BTV? Because the baseball industry laughs at that site. And thinks anybody who references it doesn't know baseball.
No way on the Castillo deal. Don't need junk pieces with low OBP
As a Mariners fan, I would hard pass on this deal. They constantly bring in guys that are north of thirty, they’re in the drivers seat. Pitching is a hot commodity and they need offense, don’t settle!
This trade Never going to happen the Braves always looking for a advantage a cheaper advantage every year.FREDDY GONE,,FRIED GONE,,WHO NEXT? ACUNA or OZZIR,HEY guys do what BEST for you and your Family .There NO MORE Loyalty to a team,LOYALTY TO MONEY its a business man GET YOURS,because the team owners want theirs.
I wanna hear from Baltimore fans, are you pulling the trigger on this trade for Castillo?
Cubs marlins talks are dead now and there’s no way the cubs would have even given Owen caissie. Also that trade was 2 top 100 prospects not one, triantos is top 100.
