Tre Jones is definitely a litmus test which determines if people watching know how to judge NBA players. Elite screen navigation, defense, low turnovers, no bad shots, always the right decisions. Elite role player in the national basketball association of ours.

Elite screen navigation is crazy, I’ve never seen a player dying on screens as much as him
Yes but he can’t guard bigger SGs and defense sags off him at 3
Yeah he’s basically a slightly worse version of Tyus. A spot starter but elite reserve.
I wish we could find more minutes for Tre. As much as I appreciate Chris Paul’s influence on winning and winning culture this year, I wouldn’t mind at all if the two PGs for next year are Castle and Jones.
Meanwhile using that same website, Devin is a -15 on his net rating. The team’s defensive rating is in the mid 120s when he’s on the floor.
EDIT: I’m getting downvoted for stating facts? I wasn’t even complaining, I was just saying what that website says when he’s on the floor.
There has been some criticism of him lately but I don’t understand why. Not only has he been good but he’s coming back from injury playing inconsistent minutes and is still good. Going back to last year the team has been very good with him. I’m very happy to have him back because I think he takes pressure off Castle to create which, by the numbers, has made a huge difference.
This kind of post is a litmus test to see if people understand the game a base level or need stats to tell them what’s happening. Sports analytics have many flaws. We dont know the context of what coaches are asking the players to do, we dont know when teams are missing certain glue guys or if some guys are limited with minor injuries. Back 2 back, long road trips. Tough matchup the night before, cake walk the night before, etc. Much easier in BBall with less players to assign stats but until we know the actual game plans, play calls, and in game adjusting from coaching its just something to consider and use as a tool like stats have always been used. Eye test is always king.
At the end of the day you have to put the ball in the basket or be threat to do it. This current team is not good enough to cover for guy that lets be 100% honest here is scared to take shots. A guard with no 3pt threat is a problem in 2024.
He is a solid defender in the right situations and has a great attitude. I like him, but he doesnt get many minutes on most NBA rosters. For a rebuilding team, sure he can run the point no doubt.
I think “elite” as a descriptor in any category is questionable. Tre is definitely a “steady” or safe player. He can help keep things afloat for a second unit. He’s not particularly aggressive though and has holes on both ends – he just is good at avoiding situations in which they’re exploited.
All to say he fits well as a 2nd or even 3rd string PG on a good team (Cory Joseph comes to mind as a comparison).
