  1. Expect to see Solano re-signed. Hope Profar comes back but we can find a replacement if he leaves. Suarez could bring in a decent player depending on who we deal with. The trade idea with the Cubs is intriguing.

  2. But that's AJ Prellers MO, he has always played for the NOW. That's why practically every season he trades away most of the top prospects in the farm system. Many teams have one or two long-term $300 million players, but the Padres are buried with too many of them along with other multi-year contracts which restrict them from making other moves that could help the team when they needed the help most. Their current contract situation is what has forced the Padres to trade or talk of trading guys like Dylan Cease. A team that is going for it all, doesn't trade a guy like Cease when the team is already short on starting pitching. Because they are determined though to trim the payroll he must go, to install other players at vacant positions on the roster who make next to nearly nothing. This now is the result of going all out year after year instead of developing and building a roster through the farm system, some trades and a FEW free agents. Signing a couple free agents to 3 maybe 4 your contracts is one thing, but the length of contracts on too many current Padres has put this team in a bad position both for now and in the future.

  3. Would be sad to see any player leave from last year's team but the team has to improve and Preller is trying to reload each year, not rebuild. It's been a lot of years since the Padres haven't at least come close to making the playoffs

  4. Would prefer not to see Cease go but here's a trade idea:
BOS gets: Cease, Cronenworth, De Vries, Kash Mayfield
    SD: Abreu, Casas, Mayer

Boston benefits: They had the worst 2B production in MLB last year and Cronenworth would be a significant upgrade and it's not the best contract but nothing terrible. Casas could be the odd man out of Devers is moved to 1B and Boston signs Bregman(they need a big right handed bat). They also get their ace in Cease and probably have the money to extend him. De Vries is a high upside top prospect that replaces the MLB ready Mayer and arguably could even become better than Mayer. Mayfield is a long term pitching prospect who was a 2024 first round pick.

SD benefits: Shaving off 25 million in Cease and Cronenworth. They get 3 quality young players with years of team control. They won't need to feel bad about losing De Vries as Mayer is basically MLB ready and could end up being their SS of the future. Casas is more of a traditional power hitting 1B they've been looking for and Abreu replaces Profar in LF and won a gold glove last year in RF for Boston.

If they can't get a trade like that done maybe Cease and 1-2 other players/prospects to get Kjerstad and Mayo from BAL, then I'd bite the bullet of contract year and keep Cease.

Ideally SD keeps Cease even if they get Sasaki, but it seems it's probably not possible.

Another option could be to trade Bogaerts and a higher level prospect or two to try and dump 25 million. Perhaps a Bogaerts, De Vries and Kash Mayfield trade to get Mayer in return. Then they keep Cease and extend Arraez on a slightly backloaded contract.

  5. If SD can make one sizable FA signing, perhaps converting Jeff Hoffman into a starter could work. 3yr/28-30mil. They've done a great job with Lugo and King and I'm sure King could give some wisdom to Hoffman. Hoffman could potentially end up being 85-90% as good as King.

Worst case, they could put him back to the 'pen and they could trade Suarez to get a solid player back and get this optionality with Hoffman.

  6. They do not have the money to sign Profar. Profar is getting 12M+. They need to cut roughly 30M in payroll if Kevin Acee is right and there is no way to get him. This means they need to trade Cease and Arraez for younger more controllable players. This doesn't fit the win now window but will be necessary if that is their true budget. Preller has really messed up by trading 12 of the top 15 prospects they had last year because they now have no future plan other than 2 teenagers.

  7. With the Padres showing that they are doing absolutely nothing to improve the club this off season, what makes them think Roki would be interested in signing with them?

  8. you are delusional if you think the Padres are signing a big free agent…they are gonna be shedding payroll….Padres are going back to the shit team we all know

  9. I just love the tough at bats of Profar and Arreaz and I feel like that style of hitting is contagious. It makes pitchers throw more pitches and i really just feel like it makes the whole lineup better. I want em both.
