  1. Here’s a little early morning Mo love for anyone interested. There are currently 18 defensemen with more points than Mo this season. Out of those 18, Mo (91 blocks/97 hits) has 16 more blocked shots than the highest of those (John Carlson 75 blocks) and he has a whopping 37 more hits than the next guy (Neal Pionk 60 hits). Mo is having a great season we all know this here, but he’s doing so much more defensively than his offensive contemporaries.

  2. The Lions really surprised me last night. After watching their defense get burned by the 49ers last game, I figured a very talented Vikings team would have lit ’em up. That was a helluva job by Aaron Glenn.

  3. The newest Winged Wheel pod episode is truly unhinged with optimism. You love to see it. Just when we thought that the season was done for, they pull us back in.

  7. Idk about anyone else, but I care so much more about beating the Sens than any of the other wins they’ve gotten on this streak lol. For the remainder of this year, I’m all about process and efforts over result… except for tomorrow haha.

I don’t want to make excuses tor the previous version of this team, but even the pathetic West coast trip isn’t looking as bad these days with the Ducks and Sharks stealing wins over more and more good teams. Todd is getting more out of a lot of guys, Holl and Gus were never going to be great but they were serviceable defenseman at worst before they came here. Sure it’s a new coach bump but it’s a fresh start for them and if we can just get decent play from the bottom 4 we look way less flawed roster wise than I was accepting 10 days ago.

    Great sports weekend, even going back to work can’t get me down today. Go Wings, Go Lions, Go USA, Sparty On!

I’m glad the Wings and Pistons are playing well right now, because it’s deflating for the Colts to bring back a GM who hasn’t won shit in 8 years and a coach who hasn’t done anything to build a winning culture in 2 years while our young franchise QB who can’t stay on the field or complete half of his passes needs veterans to tell him to work harder to improve when he doesn’t want to do those things. Long gone are the days of Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, and Bill Polian.

    But really, kinda hoping Shai keeps improving. He’s often on the third pair in GR.

  17. Augustine didn’t have the greatest game last night, but I’m glad they pulled it off and won the gold. As for Canada – c’mon guys. Get your shit together! You need to be in there! The tournament always loses something when they get knocked early, since no other country cares as much as they do.

    Meanwhile, I found that the Canadian part of my dual citizenship kicked in last night and caused me to only think about hockey. After I finished watching the game I had an “Oh crap” moment, as I remembered that the Lions were also playing. 😛

  18. I was thinking about this last night – someone asked why the owners and league would be against deferment. On paper you’d think they would be in favor of it because it allows owners to hang on to their money longer.

    One issue is escrow. Players have 10-20 percent of their pay withheld in escrow because of the way league revenue is calculated and split 50/50 between the NHLPA and the owners. They can’t know what league revenue will be in advance, so they estimate it on the high side. The escrow is set up so the owners can receive refunds for overpayment, and anything remaining is then released to the players.

    However, the more I thought about it I believe the real issue is CBA negotiations. If many players elect salary deferment, then owners will lose leverage. The CBA expires Sep 15th, 2026. Owners want players in a position to need their salary, so they can lock them out or threaten to do so and pressure the NHLPA to broker a deal. This is why I am certain deferred contracts will be banned.

  23. Friedman said on his podcast that some of the Veterans took offense to Lalonde’s statement about the future. They felt mentioning the future was bright with rookies was a slight on them.

    There’s no way Lalonde meant it that way, and it’s kind of weirdly egotistical to think it was, but if it’s motivating them now, then sure, use it.

  25. If the Wings beat the Sens tomorrow night, they will pull even with the Sens in the standings (though they have a game in hand) and this sub will go crazy.

  28. Not sure why this came up in my feed, but did anyone else see a thread on the Blackhawks sub basically complaining that the league ignores Bedard? I was baffled as I have seen more of the kid in 1.5 years than I care to in a lifetime including giving a WC game to a garbage team. I don’t want to find so I don’t get more recommendations, haven’t been on their sub ever except maybe for last year’s Cheli/Kane game just to check in. I just had to vent to someone it was so odd.

  30. I vividly remember hearing my dad drop the F-bomb for the first time. I was in 5th grade. Dad was on the couch watching the Lions and Jon Kitna just threw an interception. “We need someone who can throw the fucking ball”

    Last night I witnessed the Detroit Lions go 15-2 and clinch the #1 seed.

  33. Tomorrow night I think I’m going to make the effort into trying to watch most of the game… All I’m hoping is that they don’t turtle against Ottawa like they usually do. Hopefully it will be different this time around. I have way more faith in McLellan.

  35. Yzerman (and to the same extent, the pro scouting team) caught a lot of criticism this season for putting together this roster. Understandably so, it looked like the players that were brought in to fill certain roles were falling very short of their marks.

    Turn the page to today, and while we are still very much in the honeymoon phase with a new coach, it looks like these players are suddenly doing what they were brought in to do.

  37. Watching the OT goal for USA, I think it actually benefited Stiga for him to not catch that puck cleanly. The puck going off his stick gave him the opportunity to go wide, readjusting the angle of Finland’s goalie and giving Stiga the chance to get him moving east to west to open up the five hole. What a goal (and pass).

  39. I love Nate Danielson but man we were 1 pick away from Ryan Leonard being available (I think they just liked ND and possibly would have picked him anyway but this is still haunting me).

    It irritates me greatly that Washington picked ahead of us on the last day of the season due to a tiebreaker and then one year later got into the playoffs ahead of us due to a tiebreaker.
