Should The Pirates Trade For Luis Robert Jr.? Another Outfielder?

#pittsburghpirates #piratesoffseason #mlbfreeagency

It’s the start of the new year and the Pittsburgh Pirates still haven’t done much to address their offense. By the looks of it, it doesn’t look as if it’s going to be addressed through free agency (at least not in a big way), so let’s take a look at some names we haven’t discussed much this offseason the Pirates could look to trade for.

  1. It truly sucks being a Pirate fan they won't spend money and they can't develop any hitting, I wish I could just start cheering for another team but being a hometown fan it's hard to let go

  2. The issue with making a big trade is that I don’t trust cherington to do it. Guaranteed, Robert jr would turn into a pumpkin (or at the very least, repeat his 2024 season) and our prospects would turn out to be all stars. This season is already a punt bc of the situation cherington has put us in. Even if we wanted to get a free agent, why would they sign here given our history of losing + how we treated rowdy at the end of the season? It sucks that skenes will be gone in three seasons (if that) after this one, but there is nothing that Cherington can do rn that will undo years of mismanagement

  3. Saying Robert or Santander are the only ones that guarantee a playoff is naive. Either could not work out and a player you don't expect could contribute. But saying you have to go one way or all hope is lost is naive.

  4. I don’t love the idea of Verdugo, but he would be an improvement over the negative 1.8 war the Pirates fielded last year. Per baseball reference here is his war since cracking regular playing time 2019 3.0; 2020 (remember only about a third of a regular season) 2.1; 2021 2.3; 2022 1.1; 2023 2.6; 2024 .8. He is only 28 and was good enough in his worst year to get 559 ABs for the best team in the AL. So I think he is a little better than the 1 war player you suggested. He actually has averaged being a 2.4 war player per 162 games. By comparison the only Pirates hitters above 2.4 last year were Cruz at 2.5 and Reynolds at 3.6. The harsh reality is that Verdugo would be one of our best players. On Robert, he did have 38 homers in 2023 and 14 last year. As a point of reference Rowdy Tellez had 35 two years before we got him and 13 the year before.

  5. They need another bopper… When Skenes pitches he needs at least 2 runs for a probable win… They got him shit last year so they need a HR hitter…
