Kill me now I beg you. Would genuinely prefer palacios, or hell even bet on a suwinski rebound, over this move
Finished 46th out of 49 out of OFs with enough plate appearances to qualify…..sounds about right.
I’m pretty whelmed by Verdugo but he should be a league average hitter with good OF defense. What he did in 2023 (2.6 bWAR, 100 OPS+) is about what I’d expect out of him as a best case scenario, which isn’t bad but isn’t anything special.
I’d actually be more excited about signing Verdugo if it would be like a 3 year, $30 million deal. But we know it will be a 1 year deal and he’ll be traded at the deadline.
Little bro wants Alex Verdugo but we don’t got Alex Verdugo money. AAAA Player it is then
A sub 1.0 WAR player with moderate name recognition in early decline with a history of playing disinterested, shitty baseball?
My God, that’s Ben Cherrington’s music!
Dude had a career worst BABIP last year, so he may be a decent buy low candidate. His lack of hustle on the base paths does scare me though. Bad role model for the young players on this squad. His spray chart does look good for PNC Park, however. His lack of strikeouts and solid OF arm at least are something this team needs. Maybe a good fit for LF so Reynolds can play RF
Suwinski has more upside to be sure, but watching him K half the time is painful.
Hard pass please. Not interested in him and he doesn’t add much to the team. Unfortunately he looks exactly like the type of player we LOVE you sign. 75 wins here we come!!
If Verdugo duplicates his 2024 0.8 bWAR in 2025, it would be a massive improvement over the combination of Suwinsky & BDLC.
It would still suck when compared to what the Cubs, Reds and Brewers have been doing, but at least it is an improvement.
Remember all that payroll that they were stashing away during the rebuild. It was for guys like this to put us over the top
This team hates Palacios and they aren’t betting on a Suwinski rebound so they choose to go after Verdugo?
Idk man I’d rather take my chances with our current guys but what do I know
Anyone but Whiffwinski again
I’m sorry for being so repetitive, but they are 100% counting on getting contributions from some of the young guys already on the roster finally panning out like Davis, or getting contributions from Rodriguez, Nick Gonzales taking his next step, a rebound from Suwinski, etc. and any bat the add will be performative and a token addition. They aren’t going to say it out loud, but that’s exactly what they are going to do.
😂
id be fine with this.. on par with what we’ve been doing forever and at least its something. id love to just go all out for alonso though, would seriously give us a shot at the playoffs. but we already have horwitz and alonso will always just be a pipe dream. i like taylor ward too, liked him at the deadline last year, doesnt seem like he’d take much
I’m okay with this, simply because it’s an improvement over what they’ve had the last few seasons.
There’s also this:
>he’s reached a career-high 13 home runs in three different seasons, including 2024 — but rarely strikes out (career 15.1%). **He’s tied for fifth in the majors in doubles dating back to 2020**.
He doesn’t have the HR power, but doubles can plate a lot of runs, too, over the course of a season.
Ah joy…
Would honestly rather them throw shit at the wall until it maybe sticks. I.E Suwinski, Davis, Palacios, Yorke.
Give me Luis Robert or bust.
Yup. He’s fallen thru the floor. Go get ‘em Pirates!
If the pirates were super aggressive and got Verdugo in November and fed us a line about “we love his bat to ball skills and are convinced we can get some more power out of him” i would’ve eaten it up. I’d be intrigued about Verdugo.
But now that it’s mid January it’s soooo fucking obvious thay they’re just trying to buy 1.7 WAR for 1.1 war prices. “Yay.” Like there’s no story to be told here about “we were aggressive and identified changes we want to make to this guy yada yada”. Thats out the window. Because it’s January. And “aggressive” went out the window months ago.
If alex verdugo was signed as some sort of 4th OF type and was like the 4th best hitter the pirates brought in this winter, id probably be kinda happy about this rumor. But. Hes gonna be the “big outfielder addition” and theyre gonna depend on him. That’s the problem.
