REACTION: Cubs and Kyle Tucker Can’t Agree on Contract

The Cubs and Kyle Tucker could not agree on contract terms and will head to an arbitration hearing. How bad is this for the Cubs’ organization? Will this lead to a bad relationship with Tucker before he ever puts on a Cubs’ uniform?

  1. Very well said Kyle. Regardless of the situation, it’s obvious how frustrated cub fans are becoming with this organization. It’s hard to trust the Cubs to do the right thing anymore.

  2. I’ve done a lot of reading the past 24 hours on the arbitration system. What I discovered was the numbers are based more on comparable players from past than it is totally based on current value. That’s why Boras always uses his absurd comps of past contracts, no matter how poorly they worked out. So, he doesn’t care that Strasburg was a complete washout. The only thing important to Boras is that a certain player had a profile similar to Strasburg, thus he deserves Strasburg money. He uses Prince Fielder as a comp to Alonso, even though Fielder was done 3 years into his 9-year deal. The whole idea that the market is set based on comps without regard to how bad a contract turned out is downright stupid. But that’s how the figures are set in arbitration. All I know is I don’t think baseball will be played in 2027 because this next CBA is going to be difficult to negotiate. I hope I’m wrong.

  3. Man, look, I believe my CUBS traded Belly cause they didn't wanna pay him 20mil, so they traded for Tucker's 16mil Houston was paying him? I'll be surprised if they EXTEND Tucker! They probably trade him at the deadline or let him walk in free agency?! Yet, what's even f'up they sacrificed 3 good players for their apparent cheap market team tactics?! They should have just traded Belly?!

  4. Fire Jed now. This was all over 2M when they just freed up all that money from Bellinger and they won’t pay Tucker? If they won’t pay 17M now they won’t spend 40M for his offseason. Not that he wouldn’t want to sign, that they won’t pay him enough to keep him. Look at Vlad Jr. now.

  5. I'm seriously ready to find a new team. I'm so sick of this greedy POS worthless ownership. At what point as a fan do you quit supporting the owners of a team that clearly here to take advantage of you as a fan? They clearly are not interested in doing anything for the franchise and fans, only their pocketbooks….

  6. Another way to look at this is we do have limited funds and they're going to start low with Tucker. After a year and hopefully a good productive season perhaps Ricketts then will come up with the money. A week ago Tucker was predicted to get a 8 year contract for $340 million or 41 million a year. That's more than Aaron Judge is making through 2031. Ricketts doesn't want to pay that much so he's lowering expectations and showing the Cubs are not going to give him whatever he asks for. When extension talks come, they'll probably offer 4 years at 35 mil … and despite lowering expectations here, they won't retain him. Let's hope the Cubs go deep in the playoffs this year and maybe there's a shared positive vibe and an agreement for an extension can be reached. This move says they know this is only one year–impress us, show this team wins with you on it and (maybe) we'll give you what you want for an extension.

  7. Yo, tell the DODGERS that's this is just a business. They wanna win every year! They bypass all that BS and say okay you want this, we want you, so let's do it! Maybe I should start rooting for them!

  8. It doesn't matter if it's "business"…It's bad business to act so cheap. You end up with a losing product on the field, and ultimately you make less money with fewer people watching the game, subscribing to Marquee, missing out on post season revenue.

  9. Yeah, it’s a business and these players make a fortune. I’m not crying because Tucker may be a bit put off. None of them are actually worth what they get, nor do they have any “loyalty” other than to the highest bidder. Those days are long gone for most. Just big business being conducted by big boys. Get over it.

  10. Kyle Tucker is no superstar player. I never even heard of him before the trade. You knew they were never gonna give him a 300+ million deal. He's probably gone after 1 season. Time to play the young guys.

  11. Hoyer should resign. Look at all of his wasted salary money- Smyly, Neris, Hosmer, Mancini, Barnhart, Boxberger, Fulmer, Wisdom, the list goes on…….
If this is at the directive of Ricketts, shame on him.

  12. You are right. The team is sending a bad message. It's a bad look. The team should have offered even 17M. Now the arbitration process, never pleasant, is the only thing Tucker thinks about. Penny pinching as you say. A 300 million or more player is being squeezed for 2 million. He's gone. He's a Yankee or Met.
