2025 ZiPS Projections: Milwaukee Brewers

  1. I think the key takeaway is the Brewers are solidly above average all throughout the roster. 7 of the 9 position player positions are above average, 4 of the 5 rotation spots (although I think the Woodruff projection is optimistic), and the bullpen projects top 5 in the league.

This is a team built on depth, has a minor league system built on depth, and I think even without making any major moves in free agency since Lorenzo Cain, the Brewers look like they’re going to be solidly competitive for the foreseeable future (insert bites of the apple quip).

  2. Problem is we are paper thin behind this projected lineup so as soon as people go down (especially in the infield and rotation) it’s a bunch of replacement level guys in our starting lineup.

One decent corner IF signing and that really would sure things up but I know that will never happen with this ownership.

  3. I think Yelich and Mitchell will easily beat that WAR projection if they stay healthy but that’s a big if for both of them. Chourio is too young for me to make bold claims about but I think he should pretty easily be more valuable than those projections as well. Pretty stacked outfield to have Perkins and Frelick as your backups. Maybe they actually will try the Frelick at 3rd experiment if everyone is healthy but unless he’s fringe gold glove there too that doesn’t really fix the infield issues.

With reports that Woodruff is feeling great and the addition of Cortes this might be a great starting staff and even though Williams was traded the bullpen was excellent most of the season without him.

I feel like if there was any window to take a shot and make an impactful FA signing or trade it would be now and for an infielder but it is what it is. The 18 + eventually 4 million going to Hoskins really weighs down the flexibility for a small payroll team. Really gotta hope he bounces back next season can’t have that much money going to a league average hitting bad defender that can’t run at 1B/DH.

  4. Everything looks great and we have a lot of depth this year at all positions, but 3B is certainly something right now

  5. Woodruff’s projection is super optimistic. ZiPS doesn’t model the kind of injury a player has, which in Woodruff’s case has historically been really hard for pitchers to come back from and regain their stuff. The Brewers are paying a not insignificant amount of money to see if he can, though, so they must think it’s a possibility.

  6. I’m pretty confident that Hoskins will at least come back to leah average. That would be a win.
