Bernie Miklasz Show: The Cards’ Winter Of Discontent
In this video, I talk about three things that have been at the center of our collective thinking:
(1) The strange, strange offseason for the Cardinals. Senifeld was billed as a “show about nothing.” Well, this is an offseason about nothing here in St. Louis.
(2) The do-nothing Cardinals, with John Mozeliak unable — so far — to complete his top offseason priority: trading Nolan Arenado.
(3) And then there’s Arenado, who may have to settle back in St. Louis after being rejected by multiple teams who took a pass on trading for him … and after he rejected the Astros, who wanted to trade for him. Could Arenado make the best of an awkward situation if he plays for the 2025 Cardinals?
I think he can, and I explain why in this video.
Only 35 days remain until the Cardinals report to spring training in Jupiter.
Thank you for watching!

Bernie you are on fire with your sarcastic quips. I love them! You provide me with reasons to laugh when I don’t see any reason for hope in terms of Mozeliak’s performance in the offseason. This is why I can’t wait to see that putz move on. Thanks DeWitt for keeping Mo around and keeping the Cardinals fan base in a negative frame of mind. Thank you Bernie for providing comedy relief. 😅
The Mozaliak cardinals middle. It’s a staple and it’s perfect.
We’re still competing for that 84 win season. We can’t trade any part of our , per mo, “strong”rotation away.
Cardinals should rename the team, they have all but given up on certainty by adding true production. They can be the STL Pies in the Sky
love putting up with ya bern!
If Arenado is around for the start of the season, he should channel his inner Stephen Stills and Love the One You’re With. It could only help him change the perception that he will be moody and withdrawn because he didn’t get what he wanted.
Amazing how far Billionaire DeWitt and Mo have allowed the Cards to fall! 😢
You are a great writer, Bernie. And impeccable timing, too! You painted that picture and I was just starting to 'believe'.. and then you lost it and chuckled.. its SOO damn cold here in reality, too.
Thanks Bernie
arenado remains a great player. gorman not. strike outs will again kill us. fix that problem.
I honestly was looking for more roster turn over by now.
HOOPTY! haha
Good analysis, Bernie. I have to think that the guy is a fighter and will come out swinging if he stays in St Louis. If he doesn’t, he’s not the man I pictured him to be.
i do think arenado has some gas left in the tank, he plays to win, has that fire in him, still very good with the glove, teams have to have players like that, one of my favorite cardinal players, but,, when i watch him hit a ground ball and jog down the first line and get thrown out by a mile, see him sitting on the bench during a game not talking with the other players, i do not see him pat the others guy on the back and encourage them, he has been a great player, not sure how good of a team mate he is. i wish him nothing but the best but the cardinals come first, not arenado. both sides need to do the right thing
Bern, this is the last time, stop apologizing and let it rip. Heres the problem, the deals the have to get done require someone who must possess a certain amount of finesse, do i need to state anything further? No , thats something my old man would say to me when i was acting like a bumbling fool, " hey dip". ", try using a little finesse " the tank is empty of that particular resource.
Yes! One of the reasons we love baseball is that anything can happen. And the best players find ways to adjust and reinvent themselves, to steel their resolve, to remain indispensable to their teams, to become a legend in their sport. Also, did Mo ever promise to anyone that this will be a full tank-and-rebuild? Did he vow to cut every contract with mature players he possibly can? I think they do want to sell tickets in 2025. We don't know what the front office is planning or what they will, or can, do. Might as well entertain some optimistic scenarios as well as the doomsday ones. What's the risk? Prolonging the refresh, reset, renew, revitalization, whatever? Don't we kind of already know that real change won't begin until Bloom alone holds the reins?
Arenado stays barring a miracle. He can get back to old form. Every player has a bad year. But, he needs protection. Contreras is the only guy that can protect Arenado who has proven himself where no one other than Contreras has. He gets traded at the deadline, again, barring a miracle that a real team gets interested. The Cardinals depending on young talent only will never be successful. It's impossible to develop a whole lineup plus a rotation to be contenders. Chaim Bloom or not.
During the offseason press conference, MO said some things that made me think he was gonna go out with a bang.
Sure seems like nothing will happen on the trade front.
One more year of same old crap. Only hope is that we’re far enough out at the deadline, and Fedde, Helsley, Nado, etc… are healthy and are traded to improve the prospect pool.
My cynical side is thinking, that if we’re 5-8 games back in the last Wild card spot, MO won’t trade anyone, we will miss the playoffs, and guys will walk. Nado will continue his on field decline, and his bad attitude persists and he will be even more un-tradable than he is now.
Hope I’m wrong. Go Blues!!
I would love to hear your thoughts on if you believe the cardinals front office is gaslighting the fans to thinking this is a 1 year reset? It feels like a long term rebuild
What has Mozeliak done to this team to truly improve it for the last 3-5 years?? Over pay mediocre free agents? Signing guys most teams only have a mild interest in? The fact mozeliaks got three guys who are going to arbitration is a clear sign they’re in a compete state of disarray. This team seems to be in the twilight zone and have been for Several years. Mozeliak is mediocre at best. He inherited a team with a first class farm system and what has he got now? Hes practically destroyed This once proud organization. Remember ever year for the last 3-4 Years Mozeliak promised he was going to improve this team and every year he signed guys like Brandon Crawford and carpenter. This team will never be relevant until mozeliak is long gone. Anyone who thought Mozeliak was going to do anything is still drinking the koolaid
It’s been a terribly quiet offseason with basically nothing happening. I also really am perturbed by the FO not meeting Donovan or Pallante’s salary offers. I hope both do better in arbitration than what the team has offered. Lastly, the FO would never admit it but I think they are very afraid that ticket sales are going to plummet this season. Last year, there were lots of no shows but a lot of the empty seats were still paid for; I don’t see this happening this year + the team is probably looking at a big decline in TV revenue. The Cardinals have a lot of issues on their plate. I’m a 69 year old lifelong fan but I am not optimistic for this season.
