[Slusser] Posey reached out Crawford to make sure Verlander wearing 35 is OK. Crawford said yes.

  1. Follow up tweet:

Verlander would still like to speak to Crawford himself to make sure he’s cool with it. He hopes fans are also OK with it.

  2. Personally Crawford has been my favorite Giant since he came up so this hurts to read. Craw is the SS of the Giants and always will be based on what he did for the club at that position.

  3. I hope the conversation ended with

Posey: “We’ll retire the number in your honor on opening day the season after Verlander leaves”

  4. This highlights one of my biggest issues with Farhan’s tenure. He lacked bedside manner and did a poor job of treating players like people.

When it seemed that Correa was going to be the Giants’ short stop for a decade-plus, there was apparently zero communication between the front office and Crawford. It’s a business and moving the team’s short stop of 11 seasons to another position makes sense, but you’d think there would at least be a text to Crawford saying “hey, we are getting a Star free agent and will probably need to move you around. We appreciate all you’ve done for the Giants, but we think this will help us win more games.”

Now Crawford isn’t even in the team anymore and Posey is touching base because the Giants signed a future Hall of Famer who wears the same number. I doubt Farhan thought twice about giving Matt Cain’s #18 away (to Connor Joe of all people) in 2019. Night and day.

That doesn’t mean Posey will make the right roster moves or hire the right personnel to improve the minor league pipeline. But at least he’ll be a POBO that players enjoy working with.

  5. I don’t want anyone else to wear it, but if Crawford says yes that’s good enough for me.

  6. I am not OK with this, all respect to Justin but 35 needs to be retired.

(but if it happens i’ll be ok 🙂

  7. It’s classy, but Brandon Crawford is not the type of player whose number should be retired anyway.

  8. This honestly kinda sucks but I get it. Not sure they’d really think about retiring his number but it’s really hard to imagine anyone else wearing it

  9. Verlander can wear whatever he wants, he’s a future HOFer. 35 is not a retired number.

  10. Andrew McCutchen wore #22, Peavy wore #22. It’s not retired unless it’s retired.

It’s great that Posey and Verlander are checking with Crawford to see how he feels about it, but ultimately Craw was never going to be the last to wear it.

  11. Not ok with it, oh well. Team going to start out well, then fade away into August, so it won’t matter what number he wears because he’ll be leaving in September.

  12. Bonds had always been my favorite player, but Posey surpassed him for me when he became PBO. Dude didn’t play in 2020 for his family. Retired early for his family. And continues to impress as just a class dude despite being in an industry full of egos and a holes.
