Simon Nemec says it’s too early for him to request a trade but maybe if the “situation continues “

  1. Hey would be a good to include the entire context of this quote.

He was asked about Jiricek and how he asked for a trade from Columbus. This quote was not given unprompted. It was in response to a very specific question.

What happened with him in Columbus is not at all comparable to how the Devils are developing and working with Nemo.

  2. This is a tough one for me. If the Devils thought he was good enough right row, he’d be playing. The Devils don’t want him here to sit and that’s understandable. However, the Devils can’t him keep in the minors forever. Maybe someone like Seigs gets dealt in the offseason and Nemec slides into his spot.

  3. Yea, this is the problem with being too stacked at a specific position. Right now we have 5 prime RHDs in the organization between Brett, Kovy, Dougie, Casey, Nemec. Brett is going to be here for a while, so it comes down to whether we feel comfortable moving Kovy/Dougie for Casey/Nemec, or if we’re going to trade one of our prospects off somewhere else.

Really the way Nemec fits in the lineup next year is if he replaces Kovy, which might seem like an easy decision until you factor in how amazingly good Kovy has been for our defense. Personally I would want to keep Kovy but if the org commits to doing that, we might need to consider moving Nemec in a trade

  4. considering what this team has in casey. and dougies contract ends right about the same time when quinns is up, looking to trade nemec for offensive fire power isn’t the worst idea. it’s not like this team couldn’t use it as of late…

  5. Kovacevic really threw a monkey wrench into Fitz’s master plan on defense. His spot is supposed to Nemec’s but how do you not keep him at this point with how good he’s been? And you’re not going to deal at the trade deadline because we’re going to be buyers. Hopefully he prices himself out of resigning, so we can bring in Nemec next season.

And then on top of that, Dillion and Pesce are on multi-year deals, but I also can’t see keeping Casey in the AHL much longer either.

  6. It’s a combination of Kovy playing way better than anyone thought, and having no injuries to the D this year

  7. He was directly asked about a trade, he did not bring this up. He has a perfectly healthy attitude about this situation, it must be tough. He’s in the NHL just about anywhere else.

  8. Nemec had a spot going into this season and he lost it to Kovacevic. That’s on him.

I get it, I don’t want to live in Utica either, but if you wanna crack the roster you gotta earn that ice time.

  9. Just seeing this after responding to a comment in the daily thread about Nemec and I said I have the feeling he becomes trade bait…lol

Not that I want that to happen, just what I feel like will happen

  10. Devils fandom, swinging from “We have no talent. This is a problem.” Now “We have too much talent. This is a problem.” Having a kid this young with some NHL seasoning will help the franchise on the ice or in a trade. All good! And has to suck to think you’re going to be an NHL starter, slump a bit at the wrong time, and gave Kovy fill that spot. Not fun!

  11. I like Hamilton, but smartest move is to do whatever it takes to move him this off season, re sign kovacevic if he’ll stay for a reasonable number like sieg, and then bring up Nemec next season and use Casey as first call up or trade bait. Or maybe it’s smarter to bring up Casey as a dougie replacement and trade Nemec. That’s a really difficult call to make. But either way Hamilton should be moved to try to bring in a new offensive weapon. It’s unfortunate because dougie is one of my favourite devils, but the way forward is more and more obvious every day.

  12. To me this is simple. You 100% do not trade him. I know he isn’t asking for a trade. Kovy has done a very good job this year. You keep Nemec around this year in case anyone gets hurt or depth in the playoffs. Kovy will walk and get more money and boom. You have your fill in. In 2-3 years from now our anchors will hopefully be Luke and Nemec. You don’t trade (unless you get blown away with an offer) this type of player because you have solid third round pairing guys now.

  13. I get it.

There is a logjam in front of him and not playing NHL games might cost him millions when it comes to his second contract and forward. I still think keeping him should be a priority, but when you’re a contending team, it’s not easy to make space for the youth.

  14. I feel like we should totally bring up Nemec and Casey and use them in some sort of hybrid Forward/Defense role. I can’t imagine them having worse offensive stats than MacDermid/Lazar/Bastian/Tatar.

  15. Kovacevic will likely get moved at the deadline you gotta think. There’s no reason not to have Nemec or Casey up. Kovacevic has been great, but he’s not worth losing a huge prospect/talent. Unless we end up moving Nemec or Casey to get some offense. We desperately need help in the bottom 6 at the very least

  16. I dont blame him for being upset he had a very solid rookie year, a rough 9 games in a new system and got demoted with no chance to come back. I get it its rough as a young kid. I really have high hopes for Nemo and think he will be an incredible 2 way d man and would love to see that happen in NJ.

  17. This seems like something that could possibly get lost in translation and piss Fitz off imo. I would love to keep Nemo long term, and with the emergence of Seamus, I think Dougie may become expendable sooner than later. Ideally, we don’t trade either of these young guns, as they could be instrumental in our long term success.

That being said, I think Nemo’s preseason injury playing for Slovakia may have had a bigger impact than most realize. I wonder how much of the issue with his play may relate to nagging injuries or the mental toll the injury played a part.

I am glad to see Nemo getting back to playing good hockey, and hope to see him back up with the Devils soon!

  18. If the Devils move Nemec, I would be looking at a Mason McTavish type of player. Not necessarily McTavish himself, but a center around that age who has high upside but needs sheltered minutes.

If Fitz is looking for a vet, maybe Zacha type (vet under 30) and a 2nd-rounder.

Obviously all this depends on signing Kovacevic.

  19. He is 20 years old and didn’t play well enough in camp to earn a spot.

This is ridiculous for this to be any kind of story or even a question to him in the first place. “We own his fucking rights.”

NHL GMs do not look at team construction in 1 year increments. Our team management is looking multiple years out with all the moves they do, and construction a ton of different scenarios about how things may go or not to a) ensure we ice the best team we can, while b) staying under the cap, and considering c) who is in our organization and who may or may not be available at any given time.

Take a look at our team 2 years ago. Then 4 or 5 years ago. NHL rosters have a surprising amount of turnover minus some core pieces. We as fans often project teams out regarding free agents and trades, but then half the team looks entirely different 2 years out from what we were thinking.

Just look at our defense alone and how much it has changed. And if Dougie doesn’t start getting back to form, his 9m contract is going to be an easy target to clear up a shit ton of space well before I would have expected.

I understand that in context, this was a response to a specific question, and fair enough – Nemec can answer how he likes.

However, this is such a fucking non-story that I can’t even right now.

Edit: PS- Nemo is going to be an incredible defenseman and while I won’t rule out that we trade him at any point depending on cap and team construction, the likelihood that we hold onto a future stud that is team controlled for another 6 years is VERY high unless some “1-4-1” type shit comes along.

  20. Devils fans, I know it’s not happening but the Blues really need a solid RHD prospect. Not sure if Jiricek will pan out or not but I really think Nemec can be a first or second pairing guy. What would it take to get him to the Blues?

  21. It pains me to say, especially after getting his jersey this season, but Dougie has been slow and a defensive liability. Nemec or Casey I see as better options.

  22. Having an abundance of wealth on the blue line is such a wonderful problem to have. Simon will have his time in the sun, won’t be long. For now, I’ll remain thankful for our depth

  23. If it comes down to Nemec and kovacevic next year as good as kovy has been we need to think about the future. Kovy imo is not gonna be the difference between this team making a deep playoff run and not. I could totally be wrong (and would love to be if we win the cup this year lol) but it’s hard to justify when Nemec ceiling is just wayyyyy higher.

  24. If you look at trade deadlines in past seasons teams haven’t had to give up very much for bottom 6 vets to fill out a roster for a playoff run. I can’t see Nemec moving at the deadline unless it’s for someone significant to slot into the top 6 with the intention of dropping palat down to the bottom 6
