[Schefter] Colts are hiring former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo as their defensive coordinator, per sources.

  1. Does anyone know what scheme they run? We are a 4-3 base but I haven’t watched much of the bengals

  2. Him and Allen were my top choices. Ppl forget he was a HC candidate not that long ago and shut down Mahomes in the AFCCG. He had a down year and was the scapegoat. Also excited to see the position coaches he brings with him

  3. Soooo…. The team that would have made the playoffs if it weren’t for its defense. fired it’s coordinator and we pick him up.

  4. Hiring the leader of the Bengal’s defense seems truly moronic. With that said, I know nothing about the Bengal defensive personnel and could be proven wrong. This still seems awful though

  5. Could he be great, sure. But man all I wanted was a DC who blitzed once in a blue moon. Another year coming of letting rookie QB’s have career days and not throw a ball passed the sticks, sigh

  6. Good luck! There’s a reason he wasn’t picked as a head coach after the Bengals made the Super Bowl and a reason he was cut from the Bengals:
    2019: 32nd in defense

    2020: 22nd in defense

    2021: 12th in defense

    2022: 16th in defense

    2023: 31st in defense

    2024: 25th in defense

  7. Many other exciting options out there like Dennis Allen and they make the most mid hire they could. Perfectly sums up this current regime.

  8. I mean please prove me wrong Lou, but I feel like this org consistently makes questionable choices while we sit here and cope and convince ourselves it will all work out and we just need to trust Irsay and Ballard, but it just hasnt worked for a long time. Again I hope he proves me wrong and I know the bengals had no talent defensively, so here goes nothing

  9. The Colts and Bengals were the only teams that had losing records when they scored 33+ points but yeah let’s hire the Bengals DC. I know the Bengals defense was good in the past but here’s a news flash those good Bengals defenses were way more talented than the Colts defense he inherits. Bargain bin Ballard strikes again. Can’t wait for Ballard to be fired, Richardson to be cut, and this nightmare of pathetic mediocre Colts teams to end.

Edit: just want to add the Colts and Bengals were the only teams to lose any games scoring 33+, the rest of the league was undefeated in those games. For the shoe or some shit.

  10. Not what I expected but a solid hire IMO.

Minus this last season, his defenses were good while not having great talent defensively

  11. The difference in this defense and Bradley’s will be indistinguishable. We’ll rank in the high teens AT BEST during his tenure. Probably 22nd-32nd. Weird hire.

  12. Notes from Hicks article:

He got his first DC job in 2019 with the Bengals (2019-2024). He inherited one of the worst defenses in the league and managed to slowly turn them around to the point were his squad helped the Bengals go to the Super Bowl in 2021. The Bengals only lost by 3. In 2022, they were the 7th best defense in points allowed.

Since 2023, the defense began a downward spiral. It’s important to note however that their defense got gutted by management and lost the following big name players: Jessie Bates III, Chidobe Awuzie, and D.J. Reader.

Hicks calls him chameleon due to his flexibility with schemes. He tried to adapt to an offense’s strengths instead of of just sticking with his base scheme no matter what.

He’s not particularly aggressive but he does a lot of pre-snap adjustments to cause confusion with the offense. He also prefers a single high safety.

He’s similar to Bradley in the overall scheme but is a lot more flexible. He tends to work with what is has and adjusts accordingly instead of sticking with the scheme no matter what. Our players won’t have a hard time adjusting to this defense but they’ll have to get used to his pre-snap adjustments. He likes to play to his players strengths and adjusts to try and counter the opposing offense’s strengths.

Since he prefers a single high safety, I feel like it’s more likely now that we draft Malaki Starks unless we grab someone from free agency..

  13. It’s funny you guys all want Allen, and are mad because the saints defense was terrible. NOLA was pretty fucking rough too lmao. These guys are on the market because something didn’t go right. Not going to be the guy and say Lou is gonna change everything but we will see. If we suck, we suck. I personally just don’t want to malign every single thing we do now because we didn’t get what we want. Now let’s go Lou!

  14. He was once one of the hottest head coaching candidates

And he will fit right in going to Indy, a team with little defensive talent, from Cincy. A team with very little defensive talent outside of one player.
