[Nightengale] The Los Angeles Dodgers, who already have folks screaming about their payroll, have reached a tentative agreement with free-agent closer Kirby Yates, pending a physical. The deal comes on the heels of signing Tanner Scott to a 4-year, $72 million contract.

Another target off the board for the Cubbies. Who next to the Dodgers
Finally the Dodgers get an elusive free agent signing. Great to see the health of the game and the competitive balance. Salary cap and floor, NOW!
When do we start a riot?
Just a thought. But maybe waiting out the market for three months is a strategy teams should stop doing. If you want someone, go sign them. The longer you sit on your hands, the more of a chance that the dodgers will just swoop in. This is ridiculous and I’m so irritated with the dodgers. But FFS, other teams can sign players too. It’s almost February.
How many roster spots do the Dodgers get to have?
Look, I’m not defending Ricketts, but this level of spend is ridiculous. Dodgers currently have contracts totaling over half of Toms entire net worth and their payroll this season alone will be 20% of Toms total net worth.
Obviously Tom needs to spend more but at this point nobody can come close to spending on the same levels as the dodgers
Next they’ll announce that they’ve signed exclusive image rights to Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams, who will now attend dodgers games in person.
Fuck Tom
Salary cap or the sport is finished as any type of a serious competitive situation
Ricketts needs to sell the team. Who in their right mind believes the blatant lie that they “are just trying to break even”? Just saying that displays the exact wrong attitude — even if $ must be a consideration — and it should be disqualifying for an owner. It is insulting and disrespectful to the fan base.
Yeah but Jed said the real X factor for the Dodgers is how well they scout, draft and trade. Using their financial advantage that is entirely legal is simply a lesser factor in their success. Given that Ohtani, Freeman, Betts, Yamamoto, Snell, Scott, Yates, Hernandez, Edman and Glasnow would all be playing somewhere else if they didn’t get paid, shockingly Jed might be full of shit.
whatever. i hope this ushers in a huge strike next CBA and we get a Hard salary cap and floor. If it means no baseball for a year or 2 so be it. The owners and players lose money (fuck em all they’re all greedy), and we don’t have to sit here wasting our time pretending the outcome matters since it doesn’t.
This is so cringe. Fuck the Dodgers.
More for Manfreds Magnificences, fuck the dodgers ( all day)
The combination of Dodgers signing everyone under the sun and Cubs cheapness is starting to suck the excitement out of me for next season. Like what is the point anymore.
I still like going to the open air bar to watch a couple games every year, but there is no use getting emotional about the Cubs anymore. Even Jed realizes he is up against a war machine with no chance of competing.
Would be kinda lame to be a dodgers fan at this point. The entirety of the season is literally pointless. You just go into the season assuming they win it all *as they should* and anything short of a World Series is a MASSIVE disappointment
Is the plan here just to buy all the players so they can skip the games?
The Dodgers are the Harlem Globetrotters and the rest of the league are the Washington Generals. MLB has become a shit show whose outcome has already been decided.
If I’m an owner of any of the 29 other baseball teams, why would I even attempt to sign any players at this point? It seems like a lost cause. This just feels like an alternate reality where we are getting punked.
The MLBPA will never agree to a hard salary cap, but that’s the only thing that will fix this mess.
Dodgers are literally ruining baseball.
Everyone was screaming when the Mets did this a few years ago and they didn’t even make the playoffs. Anything can happen in a short series. Their needs to be a hard floor versus a cap. So many small league owners don’t care and just pocket the luxury tax.
Just fucking comedic at this point.
My tin foil hat theory about the dodgers: They don’t actually plan to pay any of these guys. The ownership group will ride out the next few years for this championship window then sell the team to the Saudis. They probably already have some sort of deal done under the table. It’s not their money it’s blood money they already have permission to start spending.
The Dodgers are able to game the current system with all the deferrals accompanying these deals. Their ownership group Guggenheim Baseball Management has billions of dollars in cash that they are able to put into escrow accounts for the deferrals. The loophole for deferrals needs to be closed along with a salary floor. Ohtani’s does not count as $70 million a year against the CBT because of all the deferred money. Most MLB owners do not have the amount of liquidity in cash that the Dodgers do. Players are taking less money now to form a super team. FTD and their entire fanbase
When MLB realizes no one is watching baseball anymore except Dodger fans they’ll step in… maybe.
