1. How can you say it’s not balanced?! Has there been a repeat World Series winner?! Clearly any team can win it all. Not just the team with the highest payroll. The real question for the padres, is why are the making trades or Hader, or Tanner Scott, giving up minor league talent or picks, then not resigning those guys?? AJ gives away those young guys or picks, and now you’re left with no minor league talent, and no major league talent because you’ve let them walk! He gave up a lot of talent for a two month Tanner Scott rental. At least Hader was another year after getting him, but he walked away also. AJ Preller is horrible at his job! How many head coaches has he gone through, and how many minor leaguers has he given away? He should be fired!

   And as others have already stated here, players are willing to defer AND at times take less money to sign w/ Dodgers because they're just a BETTER all around organization to play for. This didn't happen overnight. Friedman and Co have built a strong culture in LA. THAT is why they are kicking ass in the open market. PERIOD.

4. Ohtani’s contract is $465M. Not $700M. They put the money in escrow and have to show they have the money saved and protected and can pay for the players. And they have to show the money with 4% more due to interest every year due to inflation, 4 times a year. So it’s basically like they pay the Ohtani $465M (over the regular AAV), pay MLB the luxury tax on it, but Ohtani “loans” it back to them at 4% interest per year for 30 years. It’s not a loophole. It’s logical and just brilliant money managements.

13. If there was a salary floor, then those mooching teams who take in luxury tax money and don't ever spend would be drummed out and replaced with actual spenders… then there wouldn't be so many free agents available for the Dodgers to buy.

    Ok, maybe all teams couldn't buy an Ohtani… but every team could've bought a Scott or Hye-seong Kim or even a Snell. But they don't. SO MANY TEAMS have spent less than $10m this season and then expect fans to come out to the ballpark and spend their hardearned money at $100/seat to see the same old not-good-enough, sub-.500 teams? No way.

    Yes, it is. Do you really think the owners of the other 29 teams do not have the financial acumen to grow an investment so that they have enough to meet future obligations? Or, the very least, to hire someone to do that for them?

16. Until we see what happens in the field, all of this is premature. Last year the Dodgers had to have a bullpen game in EVERY series. They have multiple pitchers that are coming off serious injuries or who haven't proven they can throw enough innings to mane it in the majors. They have an amazing team on paper, but you can't possibly be accused of being TOO GOOD before a single pitch has been thrown.

17. The year before Ohtani became eligible for trade the Dodgers spent nothing during the off season. The Dodgers secretly had a plan. They needed to make sure they had enough $$$ to offer Ohtani the following year. Padres, that same year, went hog wild with their spending which did get them into the post season. The point is, Dodgers ownership do their job very well, much better than most teams. Then lucky Dodgers, Ohtani wanted to defer all but $2M/yr so that the Dodgers could continue to build a stronger team. A lot of cheap MLB owners out there, but Dodgers just keep investing.

20. Hey go ahead and cap the salary. Dodgers wont have to pay as much and players will still want to play for them. Other teams should hire investor groups to consult on trades like these. Blue Jays just deferred for santander.
