If they’re giving him the 6+ year deal he reportedly has been demanding, then it sucks more for the Red Sox than it does us. Signing a 32 year old with declining stats to that kind of a deal to play a position he’s never played before is a big yikes.
Edit: Meant to type 31 year old (which he’ll be when the season starts)
Thank god
Hector Gomez is quoting Carlos Baerga?
If he signs with another team for less than 5 years I’m gonna be pissed. More than 5 years is not necessarily a great move in my useless opinion so if he signs elsewhere in that range I can live with not giving him that many years.
Sign your own players or trade for good players with control and then re-sign them. High end FA is for teams right at the edge of competing.
I do find it funny how split people are when it comes to wanting to sign him
I doubt it. SI is garbage, Gomez sucks, and Baerga has no real sources afaik.
That’s fine. I wanted *random AAAA utility player* anyways.
“He’s a bad signing” says a team with two impact bats, one injury prone, clinging to an unrepeatable and historic playoff run.
You didn’t have to sign Bregman. But deal prospects. Do something. This team is going to start Baez at short, they’ve given up on Torkelson, their second baseman has stones for hands, and you’ve offered Skubal a “non-competitive offer.”
What’s the plan? Run it back? Do you know how huge of a statistical anomaly last season’s finish was? This team could win less than 75 games easily as constructed. But oh wait! Your jeans are tight because Maxx Clark might be here in the fall of 2026.
It’s time to do something about Chris Illitch’s comfortable place in our sports scene.
At this point I almost hope he signs a long term deal with the Sox so this subreddit will finally be free from the bandwagon fans who quit paying attention when we traded Prince Fielder and became diehards sometime around last September.
Saw this yesterday as well, but I don’t know if I believe it. Nobody other outlets are reporting this, and Baerga seems to get a lot of things wrong. I guess we will find out soon!
At this point I’m fine if we don’t sign him because I don’t want to be stuck with a dude who can’t hit for 30 million in a couple of seasons. We need a third base plan. Jung isn’t it. McKinstry/ibanez combo sounds depressing and I think Vierling is best suited for the outfield. Wish we would’ve got in on a Paredes deal before Houston
Good I’m glad this is over let them pay him for 6 years and have their own Javy
I love playing small market money ball when we are a major market, Thanks to Scott and Chris for ruining this franchise
I don’t see any issue with Vierling being the main guy at third base. He is totally adequate there, 2+ WAR player, worthy of an everyday starter role. And looks like Perez is capable of being a 2+ WAR player in RF, and Carpenter is the main DH. If they’d have signed Bregman, that would have presumably moved Vierling to RF as the regular, and then Perez to the bench – not sure he even has a regular roster spot on the team at that point if they want to keep Malloy, I don’t see how you can have both of them on the bench when you’ve already got McKinstry.
Regardless, I think the Tigers are building towards Harris’s team and the front office sees 2025 as another season of growth for all the prospects and second year guys, bringing us closer and closer to opening a true window of contention. I don’t think they really care about the 2025 outcome, I think they know they would be a long-shot to win a WS with this team and they don’t want to make any moves now that are unnecessary or block players. I agree with Harris’s strategy. It’s easy to be impatient with him, especially after their late season success, but I think patience is necessary. Avila did so much damage, and Baez contract is a crusher.
I think we did well in avoiding a bad long-term FA contract on Bregman, Santander and especially Alonso. By the time the big prospects are ready in 2026, we wouldn’t want to have a guy in severe decline on a bad contact for several more years to come.
The spending I’d like to see is an extension deal with Skubal. He’s the guy you invest the big money into. They must pay him whatever it takes to get a deal done, there is no one who can replace his production.
Sox fan — this is fake news. Sox are not close at all. Probably further away than the Tigers
Trade for Arenado, or signing Ha-Seong Kim, Alonso, or Profar seem to be our most likely moves now?
Could be. Sounds like Boras trying to get the Tigers and anyone else to get moving.
After Santander signed with the Jays, it smells like Boras is trying to leak crap to SI to stoke the dying flame of a market.
Tigers suck. Illitch blows. Dont waste your time with this franchise. Last year was a fluke.
If we do well with the “youth”, no one will care about this off-season 6 months from now. But if we take a step back next year – Detroit will have lost its patience with Prince Illitch
